ToHellWithGAlol jimp02:40
ToHellWithGAthat's really cool, what processor does the PS3 use?02:40
RAOFCell.  Which is a (pretty slow) PowerPC processor + some coprocessors, essentially02:41
RAOFWhich is why the PowerPC version of Ubuntu can run on it :)02:41
jimp3.2ghz isn't too slow in my book, but maybe i'm old.02:41
RAOFjimp: Yeah, but it doesn't do much per cpu-cycle02:42
RAOF(It's entirely possible to make a 10GHz processor which performs much, much worse than a current 2.0 GHz Core 2)02:43
RAOF(one of) The reason(s) it can have such a high clockspeed is that it doesn't do a whole lot of stuff that regular CPUs do to speed up most code :)02:44
jimpThe PPU does.  The SPUs don't.02:44
jimpBut anyway, whatever, I take it nobody knows the current state of ubuntu's ps3 port.  I'll just give it a try.02:44
RAOFThe PPU (which is the PowerPC chip) still doesn't have out-of-order execution, etc.  It's much simpler than a conventional CPU.02:44
RAOFSo stuff which is explicitly written for Cell can get trememndous performance, but stuff that isn't won't be able to use much of it's power :)02:45
jimpI'm writing code explicitly for cell, so that doesn't bother me.02:46
RAOFIndeed.  It's tremendously fast if you can use it properly :)02:46

ShackJackHi Ubuntites -- I'm having difficulty getting XGL to run on Gutsy... XSession report, something like "(process:7027): Gtk-WARNING **: This process is currently running setuid or setgid." and says I must create a helper program. Could anyone offer a tip on how to start XGL on Gutsy? (can pastebin current session script if needed)03:29
RAOFThat's a warning, not the error.03:29
RAOFwiki.ubuntu.com/CompositeManager/Xgl still works.03:29

RAOFPraxx: Hm, neither of those bugs seem particularly well filed.  However, you might want to try Gutsy and see.03:55
PraxxRAOF, how does one make sure that the proper info is provided and the request is heard. There many threads filled with this issue and I wish I knew how to proceed03:56
RAOFPraxx:     *03:56
RAOFPraxx: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems is a good start.  You'll want to be running Gutsy, too (at least a LiveCD)03:57

ShackJackHi Gibbons!  I'm running GG with XGL/fglrx (woe is me!). I have XGL running but when I go to Appearance and check Desktop Effects, the decorations blink and I get a dialog simply saying "Desktop effects could not be enabled"... Starting appearance prefs from C/L indicates it might have a problem with texture_from_pixmap not being available... ANy suggestions?03:14
ShackJack(XGL/Compiz working on prior Feisty install)03:15
PiciAha!03:16
PiciHi xgl/fglrx buddy.03:16
PiciI too have the same issue, I kinda came up with a workaround.03:17
ShackJackPici: Oooh I love workarounds - lets hear it :)03:17

PiciLD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa compiz.real --ignore-desktop-hints --sm-disable --replace ccp &03:19
PiciThe compiz wrapper script doesnt appear to handle xgl too well.03:19

ShackJackPici: I cut n' pasted what you sent... It still compains about texture_from_pixmap... Friggin' fglrx!!!03:30
