I have an XGL login session which starts us and seems to work, but Desktop Effects wont start (complains about texture_pixmap thing) and session startup program to start compiz manually yields no decorations...12:39

ericrostwill gutsy release under GPL v2 or 3?02:58
h3sp4wnIts not as simple as that02:59
h3sp4wn(I don't know of any programs that are GPL v3 licensed yet either)03:00
ericrostany distro has their choice for the distro specific stuff.. and more distro's means more pressure on Linux for the kernel03:00
ericrosterr.. Linus03:00
h3sp4wnby volume the distro specific stuff is irrelevant03:00
ericrosth3sp4wn: given that it released today, that's not suprising03:00
ericrostyes, but use is what validates it.. and if every distro went v3.. well all of them + OSolaris...03:01
ericrostgiven that Linus wants ZFS03:01
h3sp4wnHe doesn't03:02
ericrostbut RMS is a hypocrite (sorry v3 stuff again) given that he's on the board of Linspire... and they signed with Microsoft's patent FUD.. but no hissy fit from RMS03:03
=== linxeh [n=linx@88-96-202-38.dsl.zen.co.uk] has joined #ubuntu+1

ericrosthttp://lkml.org/lkml/2007/6/12/23203:06
h3sp4wnI have read that doesn't imply he is bothered to me really03:08
ericrostnot bothered, but a possibility of a dual license release to get ZFS if there's any GPLv3 release of it.. granted GPL2 wouldn't change anything.. just pick it up03:09
ericrostbut I don't know if you can release a package today under GPLv2 (new package)03:10
h3sp4wnIt cannot happen03:10
ericrosttoo many signatures?03:11
h3sp4wnpeople who are dead and suchlike03:12
h3sp4wnalso03:12
ericrostfolx who are dead can't really hold up a re-licensing... copyrights don't transfer to estates03:12
ericrostand the original license allows relicensing under subsequent gpl's03:13
h3sp4wnNo03:13

thepumpkini'm in ubuntu feisty03:30
thepumpkini'm testing a new software that uses gutsy libraries.03:30

ubotuFor upgrading, see the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes03:30
gnomefreakthepumpkin: if you dont know how to upgrade you really shouldnt use gutsy yet03:30
Stormx2thepumpkin: I've been using ubotu since hoary and I'm not confident enough with ubuntu to upgrade to gutsy. Go figure.03:31
Stormx2s/ubotu/ubuntu03:31
ponicgStormx2, Do you know about Wubi+Gutsy?03:32
cyphaseIs there any reason that CUPS couldn't auto configure printers when they're connected, instead of having to go through a wizard (albeit a short one).03:32
thepumpkini just need test a software.03:32
ponicgI was considering installing a wubi installation, then ubgrading from feisty to gutsy.03:32
thepumpkinthis is a test machine.03:32
ponicgIt'd be nice if Dyntics worked...03:32
thepumpkin"current dist not found in meta-release file" what that means?03:33
gnomefreakthepumpkin: more than likley the upgrade is going to fail, odd are about 70% it will fail03:33
gnomefreakthepumpkin: you cant upgrade yet safely, it means packages are not ready to be upgraded03:33
thepumpkinI understand.03:34
gnomefreakeither your libc6 is wrong glib or dbus versions are off or its a packaging issue03:34

xsachagrrr i had a kernel in /boot/ that didnt work (just left it there, it wasnt in grub list or anything)    when i just upgraded kernel thru adept then, i checked menu.lst and it had all my kernels in there with the broken one as default?08:03
DanaGIt might be a poorly-burned CD, for example.08:04
ryancrfound it in installer/debug  : failed to copy files; faulty CD/DVD or hard disk?08:04
ryancryes that looks like it might be it08:05
DanaGI usually burn installer CDs at something like 4x.08:05

DanaGOr 8x.  But not full speed.08:05
ryancri just used nautilus, not sure what speed it used ;)08:06
xsachai always burn my DVDs at max speed and never had any issues, guess im just lucky08:06
xsachayeah, i put gutsy on a dvd.. i have about 50 dvds and no cds08:06
ryancrlol well its getting to that point, where dvd are almost the same price as dvds08:06
ryancrdoh as cds*08:06
xsachai havent benchmarked but im guessing the livedvd is gonna perform much faster than livecd08:07
DanaGOdd, I try to turn on desktop-effects, and I get an admin prompt.08:07
DanaGIt should detect that nvidia is already being used!08:07
ryancrman i hate having to reburn and waste cds ;(08:09
xsachaall my dvds are rewritable and i got no cds08:09
xsachathis dvd has tribe 2, it has tribe 1 and it'll have final08:10
xsachahad08:10
ryancryeah rewritable is a good idea..i grab some tomorrow08:11
ryancrwould have saved me from having stacks and stacks of old distro discs around ;)08:12

xsachayou only need so many coasters08:12
ryancrlol so true08:12
DanaGI once got writable CDs that wouldn't erase.08:12
xsachathat sux :(08:12
DanaGOn some of them, I left them with the data side facing direct sunlight all day, and I was able to erase them -- but that didn't work for all of them.08:13
DanaGPerhaps they were just junky CDs.08:13
ryancrwell the md5sum of the iso checks out, time to reburn08:13

ryancrso far anyways ;)08:27
jriachiis it a glib issue or something?08:31

DanaGOdd, xscreensaver has a fake-bsod mode "nvidia" -- but it doesn't do anything.08:48
DanaGOkay, I don't get it if I uncheck everything else,08:51

h3sp4wnbut it is possible to do large amounts of regression testing (look at RHEL) it just costs $08:19
h3sp4wnand backport features to the stable kernel over its lifetime08:19

starzbut how much $$ gets tossed into ubuntu during development?08:20

starzhey anyone good at hacking up an install cd? i need one that goes normally to the partition manager then moves directly on to grub doing the full detect08:28
starzno installation under any conditions08:28
jussi01starz: why?08:29
starzoh08:29
starzwell the grub detect os's on all partitions on all drives is awesome on the installation cd08:29
starzbut man try update-grub and that sux08:29
starzhave to do that for each install on a quad boot system and then build menu.1st by hand sux08:29
jussi01starz: have you tried the method in !grub ?08:29
starz:P08:29
starz!grub08:30
ubotugrub is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost grub after installing windows: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows - Making GRUB floppies & other GRUB howtos: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto08:30
starzyeah08:30
starzlemme double check second linky 1sec08:30
starzim thinking of moving menu.1st to a diff name so it is forced to find stuff08:30
starzyeah i saw that08:31
starzdoesnt seem to do the trick as ive not got any floppies so meh.08:32
starzif i really could i would just get the part of the install cd that installs grub but gah08:32
starzstill need things up to the partition editor so it knows where to put things08:32
starzunless it wouldnt even look for that but it still needs hardware drivers i guess08:32
starz>_<08:32
jussi01starz: but have you gone through the "sudo grub" root (hdo,1) stuff?08:32
starzyeah dont get me wrong i can get grub working if it gets borked08:33

starzsay i boot to my feisty [edgy is my default]  and do the same same thing08:33
starzmm08:34
starzwell i had it detect the grubs and it found em all and then told it the right partition..08:34
starzused the method from the alternate install cd...08:34
starzyeah i should just move the menu.1st file and MAKE it rebuild one perhaps08:34
starzthink that might work a little better?08:34
jussi01maybe, but have a live cd handy just in case...08:35
