pwnguinok07:10
pwnguinwhat pacakge is diplayif in?07:10
crimsunDisplayIf is an optional directive for update-notifier hooks.07:11
crimsunI pasted the change I made in 1.0.14-1ubuntu5.07:11
pwnguinah07:11
crimsunif you don't want to ever see that message, then just get rid of ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf07:11
crimsuni.e., manually do stuff with ~/.asoundrc and never create ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf07:12
pwnguini never created it personally07:12
crimsunthat will short-circuit the DisplayIf invocation, and you'll never see the popup.07:12
pwnguini assume it was generated by alsa07:12
crimsunon07:12
crimsunno07:12
pwnguinor part of the default user profile07:12
crimsunno07:12
crimsunwe do not, per Policy, _ever_ touch user-specific configs in the install/update process.07:13

crimsunit can be created via asoundconf set-default-card07:13
pwnguinwhich ive done in the past as instructed07:14
crimsunso if you used a standard Ubuntu tool, then you'll see standard Ubuntu prompts/notification popups07:14
pwnguini did07:14
crimsunthere's a very specific reason that prompt/notification popup is shown07:15
crimsunbetween alsa-lib versions, mixer element strings are modified07:15
crimsunthe ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf that's created via asoundconf(1) has those element strings07:15
crimsunif you attempt to use an older ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf with a newer libasound2, you'll receive seemingly cryptic error messages.07:16
crimsunhence, we display a popup to tell you to refresh the element strings07:16
=== defcon [n=defcon@71-36-164-154.phnx.qwest.net] has joined #ubuntu+1
crimsunI began work yesterday during the Fourth fireworks to sanitise the coupling somewhat, but it's still tied very strongly to the version of libasound2 installed on your current system.07:17
pwnguinso even if i switch to a .asound, this is something id still have to deal with07:17
crimsunThere's no way to completely decouple it; that's just the way ALSA works.07:17
crimsun"switch to a .asound"?07:18
pwnguin.asoundrc07:18
crimsunyou already have both ~/.asoundrc and ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf07:18
crimsunif you don't want to ever see the message again, just erase the latter.07:18
crimsunon a fresh install of Ubuntu, you'll never see that popup.07:18
crimsunthe only time you'll see that popup is if you've executed [a tool that executes]  asoundconf set-default-card07:19
pwnguininteresting07:20
crimsunif you only have one sound card, just rm ~/.asoundrc*07:20
crimsunnote carefully the placement of that asterisk - no whitespace!07:20
pwnguinheh07:21
crimsundon't want you blowing away ~07:21
pwnguinive just never really had to think about alsa in the past07:21
crimsunthen don't think about it.07:21
crimsunJust rm ~/.asoundrc* and go about your merry audio way.07:21
pwnguintoo late07:22
pwnguinnow im curious about what it does ;)07:22
crimsunman asoundconf07:22
pwnguinthe asoundrc.asoundconf is pretty detailed, and all my .asoundrc does is include it07:23
crimsunyes, that's precisely what it's supposed to do.07:25
pwnguini have to wonder though, whether .asoundrc.asoundconf contains any settings i might want over whatever alsa defaults to07:29
pwnguinsome day i must read whatever made crimsum an alsa genius and determine why headphone jack sense fails to turn off the front speakers07:33
pwnguinaha07:34
pwnguinit is doable07:34
pwnguinat least, its possible to get headphones playing without front speakers07:35
pwnguinjack sense, not quite yet07:35
crimsunby default, set-default-card will copy the ^defaults.* from precisely what ALSA defaults to07:38
crimsun(/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf as mentioned in asoundconf's man page)07:38
pwnguinok07:38
pwnguinis it?07:39

pimp31415even with that modes my nvidia fx 6200 card is not letting me have resolutions higher than 1600x120001:32
pimp31415any ideas? using some dell crt which ive had up to that 1856 before i think to the other the 1920 but not fully sure on that might be my other monitor.....01:33
pimp31415also when i lose network connection the network manager resets kinda so i have to manually say HEY WIRED NETWORK - LOOK AT IT!01:34
varkapimp31415: did you put the values for horizsync and vertrefresh of your monitor into xorg.conf?01:35
cypherdelicPriceChild, of course, and I also realise the huge effort on working on that official Compiz-Fusion Gutsy integration01:38
PiciIIRC, Trevino's repo does daily builds against git, so hes a bit more 'updated' than the official repos are, albiet at a risk to stability.01:40

pimp31415ok solved my problem02:05
pimp31415!paste02:05
ubotupastebin is a service to post large texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the #ubuntu channel topic)02:05
pimp31415http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/28622/02:06
pimp31415ive got a crt monitor - so basically all it took was instead of going to medium settings i went to advanced when doing the dpkg-reconfigure xserver xorg02:07
pimp314151. it gave a wider range for the horizsynch and suggested 43-60 for vert which i changed to 43-70 // horiz i accepted default on advanced which gave me 28-9602:07
pimp31415i [obviously]  dont understand horiz and vert refreshes very well - never really looked into it..02:08
pimp31415but i saw a hint dated back from hoary about ignoring refreshes etc and this worked02:09
axxoyou take your monitor manual, open it, find the values, put them in the configuration02:09
pimp31415heh axxo first its a gifted monitor from my dad via his work retired it02:09
pimp31415and secondly i didnt wanna bother my roomate by turning on the light to look for serials02:10
axxothats really helpfull and relevant02:10
pimp31415i have a suspicion its a change in the latest round of nvidia drivers - perhaps they pay a little more attn or less in nix? the windows ones do allow me these refresh rates - and i will double check when its daytime02:10
