cheeseboyhow do i patch a kernel?04:30
Jester45are you wanting to update ?04:31
CapnJackI want to dump windows as a server os, I like the rich GUI of xubuntu, is it well suited to use as 100% remote server?04:35
Jester45yes04:35
CapnJackawesome04:36
Jester45you can install a cli only server if you want for extra speed04:36
CapnJackcli only, as in "client only"?04:36
Jester45command line only04:36
CapnJackah, so I would lose the nice "remote desktop" feel?04:37
Jester45you can remotly connect with ssh04:37
Jester45it would be text only04:37
CapnJackif I do that is there any point in using vnc to administer?04:38
Jester45linux's command line is a lot better and more powerful than window's. and it is what many gui programs use04:38
Jester45you cant, there will be no gui04:38
cheeseboyanyone?04:38
Jester45you could install it as normal with gui. then after you get used to linux (if your not allready) you can switch very simply without a reinstall04:39
Jester45cheeseboy, i asked if your just wanting to update04:39
CapnJacki see04:39
cheeseboyJester45, i want to patch to add support for xbox hardware\04:40
CapnJackwill still run all the same server apps as gui?04:40
Jester45CapnJack, what apps are you talking about04:40
CapnJackspecifically cPanel04:40
CapnJackand apache04:40
CapnJackI guess04:40
Jester45cheeseboy, so... you might want to look at modprobe04:41
Jester45CapnJack, both of those are (on linux) commandline programs04:41
cheeseboyJester45, i need to apply the patch first04:41
Jester45CapnJack, cPanel is php right? like wordpress and phpBB04:43
CapnJackI think cPanel itself is not php no04:44
CapnJackit's a webhosting control panel and supports php and mysql04:45
Jester45but what does it run as04:45
Jester45im looking into it now04:45
CapnJackI'm not really sure, I'm a linux noob.04:46
CapnJackas an apache plugin perhaps?04:46
Jester45i figured that so i added in that you might like to start on a gui then later after you not some stuff you can switch to gain some speed04:46
Jester45no it wouldnt be like that04:47
Jester45CapnJack, how do you install on windows04:47
Jester45install it*04:47
CapnJackcPanel doesn't run on Windows04:47
Jester45really04:47
CapnJackreally04:47
CapnJackthat's part of the reason I want to switch04:48
CapnJacknothing runs on Windows for very long anyway04:48
Jester45even the kernel :) people reinstall so much04:49
Pumpernickelcheeseboy: #xbox-linux on oftc.net for Ubuntu/xbox support.04:49
Jester45Pumpernickel, do you know how cPanel works? is ita program or somthing that apache runs like wordpress04:49
PumpernickelI don't use it.04:51
Jester45CapnJack, it should run on command line only if not... its not a good program04:51
Jester45CapnJack, but you could use the gui to set things up as it might be easier for a new user04:52
Jester45then later remove the gui to make the server faster and more secure04:52
CapnJackI can't run command line only programs on xubuntu?04:52
Jester45you can04:52
Jester45many programs are cli only or use it as a backend04:53
CapnJackok, then they are administered via ssh or are they accessible from a command prompt within the gui?04:53
CapnJack..or both?04:53
Jester45both04:53
Jester45linux is very flexible04:53

nikolamHey guys how do you setup and manage your firewall. I installed Firestarter and it is nice for me, beacouse it is much like ZoneAlarm I used to use on Win. (without application control) Vut do you think is it good to use only that and what firewall setup/program do you prefer?05:37
rolfeni use good ol iptables hehe05:37

=== Jester45 doesnt have a firewall
nikolamThe same as editing acces lists on firestarter, am I right? Firestarter uses iptables it is oonli GUI for iptables, right?05:38

=== shirish tried firestarter but was unable to compute how to play with it

reaVernikolam: the short answer pretty much is: any application sends commands to X05:53
reaVerX handles those requests05:53
reaVerand that's what you'll be seeing on your display05:53
reaVerand that's how your application receives events05:54
reaVerif anything in X fucks up horribly, X crashes05:54
reaVerand all the applications that were connected to X get a disconnect and usually close05:54

TaJMoXI use the web based player for last.fm - so I guess I'm suggesting something I dont use09:17
TaJMoXIt was kinda too bloaty for me09:18
maxamillionCem_UNAL: Xubuntu is a GTK based distro, amarok will pull alot of qt and kde libs and thus will comsume a substantial amount of system resources to run09:18
Cem_UNALmaxamillion: some time i think like u some time not09:19
