Dante123Hi all....anyone here know much about library automation and open source library management systems?04:40
johnnyif edubuntu had existed when this box was setup, we'd be using it04:40
ari_stressDante123: let me thing about it for a minute. my brain isn't dual core yet :)04:40
johnnyi'm having an issue due to two configuration oddities04:41
johnnyone.. in that i'm using both ppc and i386 clients on an amd64 server04:41
Dante123okay....I've seen Koho website...but wondering what else is available and maybe some ubuntu support or install files available04:41
johnnyand the 2nd in that i'm using dnsmasq  for dhcp/caching dns/tftp04:41
ari_stressDante123: here's some good url: http://library.rider.edu/scholarly/ecorrado/il2004/ossfeatures.html http://eprints.rclis.org/8074/04:42

ari_stressjohnny: oh two different clients?04:45
ari_stressthen you need special steps04:45
johnnyyes, i'm sure of i t04:45
Dante123ok thanks04:45

johnnywell i'm ignoring ppc for now04:46

johnnyonce i  get i386 working04:46
johnnyit's looking in /scripts/nfs-premount but i see nothing in   there04:48

ari_stressoh ok04:50
ari_stressbut i suspect the i386 isnt working, because the server is 64?04:50
johnnydoubtful04:53
johnnyother people have done it04:54
johnnyyou just need to have a client built04:54

ari_stresssbalneav: yes, i'm fajar on the list :D05:08
sbalneavk, why do dynamic, and complicate things?  Why not just statically define all your ltsp hosts in dns?05:08
ari_stresssbalneav: that's exactly i'm thinking. but since he's the one has the money, i as consultant can just do my best to provide it05:09
=== Dante123 [n=dante123@206.132.57.172] has left #edubuntu []
ari_stressbut, i take it as a challenge. i always believe in foss, and i'm sure it can mimic the feature of MS W2k feature05:11
ari_stressit's just me that dont know the sytax/conf correctly yet05:11
sbalneavI'm sure you can too, but WHY? What does DYNAMICALLY assigning a hostname give you, over simply pre-defining them?05:11
ari_stresssbalneav: you are right, it's over kill feature for ltsp, and dont have any real benefit. but...05:12
ari_stresshe wants it for the rest of the network too05:12
johnny  the erroring i'm geting is tht it's trying to run /scripts/nfs-premount  and says nfsmount: need a path05:13
ari_stresssome of the network dont use ltsp, that's why he wants the dynamic thing05:13
johnnysbalneav, any ideas?05:13
sbalneavjohnny: Ah, so it's YOU who's having the booting problem.05:13
johnnyit's loading the kernel05:13

johnnyit's already booting the kernel05:15

johnnywhere is the nfsmount root defined?05:16
sbalneavin the dhcpd.conf file05:16
sbalneavit's passed as an option from dhcp05:16
sbalneavdnsmasq doesn't handle that option.05:17
sbalneavso, the client has no idea where it's root drive is.05:17
ari_stresssbalneav: i'm an employee of a linux consultant. my boss who is get the big money, i'm just my monthly salary05:17

sbalneavWhere have you "heard" this?05:21
sbalneavThe only way it would work is if you hacked up the initramfs, and hardcoded a bunch of values.05:21
johnnyhttp://www.quixotic.org.uk/Articles/LTSP.shtml05:21
johnnyaha..had that one, but in another dnsmasq config file05:22
sbalneavThat looks like he's doing it for the older ltsp 4.205:22
sbalneavAny reason why you want to use dnsmasq over the standard dhcpd?05:24
johnnycuz dnsmasq is an awesome package and i was already familiar with it.. run it on every network05:25
sbalneavAh, so just personal preference.05:26
sbalneavWell, your options are: hack dnsmasq to supply the option you need (root-path) or, hack the initramfs to hardcode the root path.05:27
johnnyits showing up now05:27
johnnyit says rootpath : 192.168.1.5:/otp/ltsp/i386 now :)05:27
sbalneavWell, according to the manpage on it I saw, it didn't support that option.  Maybe newer ones do.05:28
johnnyit's still not booting, but at least that isn't empty05:28
johnnyyeah.. it read that too05:28
johnnyi*05:28
johnnybut newer versions fixed that05:28
sbalneavditch the 192...., and just have /optl/ltsp/i38605:28

sbalneavSomeone should tell them to update the manpage on the dnsmasq site then :)05:29

Dante123Hi all.....I am a teacher and I am looking at setting up Koha library management software on a PIII 800mhz computer......should I be running edubuntu on that or go with the ubuntu already installed?  Koha uses mysql.....I have done lots of ubuntu desktop installs....no server installs....Edubuntu is a server edition correct?11:43
LaserJockhi RichEd11:45
RichEdhi LaserJock11:45
LaserJockDante123: actually Edubuntu is a desktop install with some server stuff added to it11:45
RichEdDante123: edubuntu is an either or11:45
LaserJockDante123: well, I guess I should clarify. It uses the alternate-disk like installer11:46
LaserJockbut it installs a full desktop11:46
RichEdit has a bunch of educational software and edu games that install by default onto the desktop ... so it is a good idea to try it out in the library11:46
LaserJockDante123: it already has Ubuntu installed on it?11:47
Dante123will it have server stuff with it too....in case I want to setup another computer to use the search features of Koha11:47
Dante123Yes, I had ubuntu on it before....just to try and show the kids something other than WINDOZE11:47
LaserJockyes, you can install LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PhP/Python) with the Edubuntu Classroom Server CD11:48
LaserJockyou can also do it all from your existing Ubuntu installation11:48
LaserJockan easy way to get the server stuff from an Edubuntu/Ubuntu install is to use tasksel in a terminal11:49
LaserJockyou just run tasksel and then select what tasks you want to install, like LAMP Server and Edubuntu desktop11:49
LaserJockand it'll install all the needed packages11:50
LaserJockDante123: and  if you want educational apps in 7.04 you can get the Edubuntu Classroom Server Addon CD, burn it, and pop it in11:51
LaserJockogra: is that ( -devel ) regarding the Desktop CD?11:51
ograyup11:52
Dante123well....if I can run taskel from terminal and add LAMP...then that would be great......and I'd leave ubuntu 7.04 on there11:52
ograseems its done11:52
ogra(as i promised you) :)11:52
Dante123if i choose edubuntu desktop.....and lamp......the configuration of everything else will remain the same right?11:53
=== johnny [n=urr@66.93.119.120] has joined #edubuntu
Dante123okay i am running tasksel....so what should I add.....besides LAMP and Edubuntu Desktop?11:55
LaserJockthat's it11:57
LaserJockunless you want to run an LTSP server11:58
LaserJockthen you could also do Edubuntu server11:58
LaserJockogra: so does it automatically look at the contents of the LiveCD or do we have to manually adjust it?11:59
Dante123do I deselect the ubuntu desktop if I am adding the edubuntu one and I already have ubuntu?  Also what about DNS server....I don't think I need that now or yet11:59
ograLaserJock, it automatically builds an intersection for -desktop vs -live12:00
ograand installs the result12:00
LaserJockogra: sweet12:00
ograyeah12:00
ogracolin made a mathematical formula out of it when we discussed it very impressing12:01
LaserJockheh12:02
LaserJockI guess that's why we pay him the big bucks12:02
