mattgyver83Thank you very much.07:42
WheelDwellerOK, back.   Not specifically- just pointing out that a lot of development has gone 'under the bridge' since I was last on, and that makes it a new world for me. (Here, or otherwise)07:42
WheelDwellerI just came tonight to get the lay of the land- I *hope* I'm about to get a lot more professional Linux time, soon.  I figured it was time to 'join up' as it were with the other developers.07:44

maxamillionWheelDweller: yes and no ....07:47
maxamillionWheelDweller: i used _old_ beryl for a while, then it annoyed me .. then i tried new beryl and used it for a while but then it annoyed me ...07:48

Lunis`AwayWheelDweller, I was in Feisty, and it worked pretty good. I am on Gutsy now and it DOES NOT WORK at all... or at least not very well :)07:48
maxamillionWheelDweller: but i used each daily for about a month each and it was stable enough to be tollerable07:48
WheelDweller...probably too much changing at the same time.  Oh, well, it'll get better.07:49
Lunis`Awaymattgyver83, did you get it fixed?07:49
maxamillionLunis`Away: well beryl is dead and compiz is going to re-release as 'compiz fusion' because they are merging all the code right now07:49
mattgyver83Im actually about to find out, but i think i might have07:49
mattgyver83hopefully it doesnt crash, ive been having that problem, but it could be due to that07:50
Lunis`AwayD: now i have to re get used to things again. curse it all. oh well, i'm quite good with xfce compositioning. simple, unintrusive, and still sexy07:51
mattgyver83for some reason when i search for a package, it becomes unresponsive07:51
Lunis`Awaymattgyver83, in xfce? mine does that too for a minute. will hang after i enter a password in gksu for like 3 minutes :x07:51
mattgyver83Though, earlier, i was able to search and find the package in question. The only issue was that it was telling me to install via cdrom07:51

mattgyver83Its really not as bad as i imagined.... for some reason, ubuntu itself just wouldnt work.07:59
WheelDwellerHmm.07:59
mattgyver83Im pretty new to linux, so i dont know if it had anything to do with Gnome or what.  DSL i was able to configure but its a pain in the butt to maintain.08:00
WheelDwellerI just put Dapper in my trailer; someone left a Celeron 400 out on the stoop...I stripped it, it's fanless, and right now it's the "avionics" of my trailer.  Sweet little deal.  Right now it just turns on a fan when the hardware closet gets too hot, but later it'll be fun.08:00
WheelDwellerYeah, if the DSL isn't a fixed address, it's always a pain.08:01
mattgyver83I still have it, in case xubuntu has some serious issues08:01
WheelDwellerIf you're curious, it's at http://CounterMoon.org, in the gallery- the latest pictures.  It's been a long, long project, but some fun along the way, too.08:01
mattgyver83Its just so much easier to port things from ubuntu, to xubuntu as opposed to, ubuntu (my desktop os) to dsl...08:02
mattgyver83I guess thats because they are similar aside from the window manager?08:02

mattgyver83at least here i can use programs and such that im familiar with on ubuntu08:07

WheelDwellerIt's pretty new tech...and so likely to be problematic.08:09
mattgyver83Ive been told some apps work on all, and some dont, but i dont know how to determine08:10
mattgyver83However im also running Familiar/Opie on my Palm Lifedrive and have learned that nothing works on that ....08:10
mattgyver83Which i dont even know if thats a linux distro or not, its not on any timeline ive seen08:10
WheelDwellerOn the same hardware, most (like 95%) of the apps should work the same.  But when it comes to hardware things, that's where the most changes are.08:10
WheelDwellerDoes your Palm not have a serial connection?  (I have a couple of V's here, but they're very, very tired- and wanted something newer....)08:11
mattgyver83no, its usb08:11
mattgyver83Its wifi and bluetooth capable which is awesome08:11
WheelDwellerI always thought the "V" was the future, but they backed outta that product.  Oh, well.  Yeah, that sounds great!08:11
mattgyver83Its really cool, however right now the thing that sucks is that the linux distro that is *in the works* is really slow and unstable08:12
mattgyver83and doesnt have wifi capabilities yet08:12
WheelDwellerI was using mine as a security guard. Fabulous.  I could take notes while not even looking at the screen, and the handwriting was always perfect, when it was done, 'cause it was text.  My boss probably misses it, now.08:12
mattgyver83So, i still use Palm OS more often08:12
mattgyver83I make spreadsheet trackers for my work and can use them on windows, but i want a version that i can also use on linux, making them portable and *to the minute* accurate08:13
WheelDwellerI really wish they'd have licensed the handwriting long ago; make it cheap and the whole world would be using it.08:13
mattgyver83however, with linux on the lifedrive being so slow ... its of no use08:13
WheelDwellerYeah...unless....VMWare?08:14
mattgyver83i have to use documents to go instead of Open Office, which D2G doesnt port over .xls documents as well08:14
mattgyver83Whats VMware?08:14
WheelDwellerA way to run a carefully-controlled instance of [insert Windows version here]  on top of Linux.  Makes it all nice and safe.08:14
WheelDwellerI'm assuming the Pilot needs to connect to a desktop, though...08:15
mattgyver83Well...08:15
mattgyver83Yes and no?08:15
mattgyver83If you want to sync with a lifedrive you can upload to the internet and download if need be08:15
mattgyver83however it would be much more efficiant if you could plug in and synch08:15
mattgyver83But i am assuming that VMware is for a desktop, not mobile managers/pdas/smartphones08:16
WheelDwellerThe nice thing about VMWare, other than the price, is that you can 'cage' an instance of Windows...and actually keep it from freaking out due to a virus.  It has a 'persistant disk' that you can remove all kinds of important system files, muck it up good, then "reboot" the window, and it's all back to the way it was.  Fabulous.08:17

WheelDwellerHmm.  Good question.08:17
=== jbrouhard is running it on the laptop and could use a decent gui
mattgyver83Thats also on my list of things to do....08:17
jbrouhardheh08:17
jbrouhardCurrently i'm using command line sudo iwconfig but I'd prefer a gui to keep it simple when I need to08:17
WheelDwellerI was just going to set it up, on my little box in the trailer....'hard code' the thing.08:18
mattgyver83your using iwconfig ?08:18
mattgyver83or iwlist08:18
mattgyver83?08:18
WheelDwellerWell, you could learn  Zenity, put it all in a cute little script.08:18
WheelDweller(And then under a single icon)08:18
jbrouhardiwconfig08:18
mattgyver83Okay, to connect08:18
jbrouhardi use iwlist only if i don't know the access point SSID :)08:19
mattgyver83I need something to show me available networks and signal strenght08:19
jbrouhardmattgyver83: same here08:19
jbrouhardI was able to use knetwork manager for that08:19
mattgyver83in xubuntu?08:19
jbrouhardYeah08:19
mattgyver83Okay08:19
jbrouhardi had instlled kubuntu first, then xfce-desktop08:19
WheelDwellerIf you could work out the underlying script to make that happen in bash (or whatever) you could have Zenity dress it up for you...08:20
mattgyver83I wish someone made a firefox wifi extension that works for linux08:20
mattgyver83their is one for windows08:20
mattgyver83that would be awesome08:20
jbrouhardheh08:20
jbrouhardmattgyver83: try network-manager ?08:20
mattgyver83okay08:20
mattgyver83no08:20
mattgyver83todays my first day on xubuntu08:21
mattgyver83but i will check08:21
mattgyver83anything i can find will work08:21

BrendanMmattgyver83, do you just want to add a shortcut?09:06
BrendanMor are you trying to install a new program?09:06
mattgyver83shortcut09:07
BrendanMUnfortunately the menu editor in Xubuntu doesn't work well, so your best bet is to go to /usr/share/applications and create a new *****.desktop file there. You can look at some of the existing shortcuts to see how to format it correctly.09:08
BrendanMThen just make a new one with mousepad.09:08
BrendanMand it'll appear in the menu. You might have to refresh the desktop.09:09

WankusI was checking my auth.log today and I spotted this: "Main-PC su[26519] : Successful su for jim by root", unfortunately jim has no administer privileges. What's going on?02:00
JRL01192how do you check your logs?02:01
pleia2Wankus: looks like root su-ed to jim02:01
pleia2a user with sudo could have: sudo su jim02:02
Wankus pleia2: jim has no administer privileges. Jim is completely inept with computers!02:03
pleia2Wankus: right, he didn't do the su command, someone used su to become jim02:03
pleia2s/someone/someone with sudo02:03
Wankusthe  only person who can use sudo is me, and I was asleep at that time!02:03
pleia2ah, interesting :)02:04
Wankushave i been hacked?02:04
JRL01192I read recently there was an exploit to sudo yourself in UbuntU I THINK i JUST SKIMPED BY THE TITLE02:07
JRL01192I didn't look into it02:07

JRL01192I usually go around there to learn Programing02:09
Wankusah ok,02:09
JRL01192but I am not 100% sure02:10
WankusOk, I'll check it thanks02:10
pleia2Wankus: you can also check all the cron jobs on the machine, there might be a valid reason for root becoming the jim user02:11
Wankuspleia2: How would I check that? I've checked my auth.logs and so far I haven't ever seen jim (or any other user) becoming root before.02:12
WankusThese are the lines from auth.log anyway:02:13
WankusAug  7 09:29:22 Main-PC su[26519] : Successful su for jim root02:13
WankusAug  7 09:29:22 Main-PC su[26519] : + ??? root:jim02:13
WankusAug  7 09:29:22 Main-PC su[26519] : (pam_unix) session opened for user jim (uid=0)02:14
pleia2Wankus: you can browse /etc/cron.d (and cron.daily/ , hourly, monthly, weekly)02:14
pleia2also: sudo crontab -u root -l02:14
Wankusok, I'll check that02:14
Wankuswhat does the " sudo crontab -u root -l" do?02:14
pleia2-u == user; -l == list02:15
pleia2so you list the crontab entries for user root02:15
Wankusok ta02:15
Wankus" sudo crontab -u root -l" gives "no crontab for root"02:16
pleia2Wankus: yeah, that's normal02:16
pleia2just one of the places to check :)02:16
Wankustrue, thanks02:16
WankusOk, I don't think someody hacked me over the internet because I just remembered my modem was disconnected from the internet at that time.02:18
pleia2that's good :)02:19
WankusBut I'm stil a bit worried, I've gone a bit paranoid these days02:20
JRL01192you should be with all the hacking activity going on in Russia and it's recent attacks on the web02:21

hyper_chanyone got a problem?11:03
jwishniehyper_ch: still need help getting mounted-USB drives to show up in Open/Save panels from GTK applications. Any ideas?11:04
hyper_chjwishnie: nope :)11:05
hyper_chjwishnie: try accessing it with thunar11:05
hyper_chand then open some gtk app and check if it's there then?11:05
jwishniehyper_ch: no, does not appeer11:06
jwishniehyper_ch: Thunar displays it properly (as does the desktop) but Save/Open panels do not display11:06
hyper_chwell, that's what I noticed... mine doesn't show in konqueror before I haven't it accressed first by thunar11:06
jwishniehyper_ch: right. that's because by default it isn't mounted until you open it in Thunar11:07
