Soliddoes xubuntu work with 32mo ram? With an alternate installer of course...?12:54
PumpernickelThe minimum amount I've seen is usually 64MB.12:58
SolidWin98 works fine with 32mo, i thought that would be the same with xfce...?01:03
pleia2Solid: you might want to try something line fluxbox instead01:05
pleia2s/line/like01:05
pleia2in theory xfce could run on 32M, but it'd be pretty awful, even on my super slimmed down laptop w/ 128M of ram the lowest I've been able to get on-bootup to get with xfce is 36M of ram usage - and that's without thunar or cups running in the background01:06
pleia2or much at all running in the background, I shut down a lot of services to get that low01:07
pleia2no gdm, no xscreensaver, no hald01:07
Solidokay, i'll try01:08

vasilijedoes anyone know the difference in stability and performance between 6.06 and 6.10, should I expect more stable xfce if I upgrade to 6.10 for example? I've had it crash on me last time I installed01:46
TheSheepvasilije: both dapper and edgy use a beta version of xfce, feisty is the first one with a stable version, as far as I remember02:20
=== BWMerlin [n=BW~Merli@58.174.115.72] has left #xubuntu ["Leaving"]
vasilijehmmm... thanxs... what bugs me now is feisty's support for my pcimcia wireless lan card. When I boot the feisty ubuntu cd it has problems connecting on my access point, with dapper I don't have that problem. But it does find the name of the wireless network. Could this be because I'm low on RAM and the ubuntu feisty live cd uses too much of it?02:30

hyper_chkstr: hardware is independent from the GUI08:13
hyper_chkstr: the underlaying system that runs the hardware is the same whether you run xfce, kde, gnome, enlightment, .....08:14
kstrok08:14
kstrso the drivers are the same also08:14
hyper_chkstr: yes, they are08:15
kstroh my, seems that the only option is to run it in wine... too bad08:16
hyper_chkstr: why? it's better than running it in a virtual computer like vmware ;)08:17
kstryeah but it would be better just to be able to use it normally in linux08:19
hyper_chkstr: what's normal about linux? ;)08:21

zorglu_q. i look for the ubuntu distro which use the smallest amount of ram. i bet on xubuntu. it comes in 2 versions alternate and desktop, which one should i choose ?08:24
hyper_chzorglu_: well, xubuntu isn't the smallest one on ram ;)08:27
zorglu_how much ram do i need to run it ?08:27
hyper_chzorglu_: 64mb for the alternate install08:27
hyper_chzorglu_: 128mb for the desktop cd08:27
kstri use xubuntu wioth 160 mb ram08:27
zorglu_hyper_ch: i plan to run it under virtualbox on a box with only 512mbyte08:27
zorglu_ok good enought for me :)08:28
hyper_chzorglu_: well, the desktop cd will afterwards also run on 64mb - just for running it and installtion it requires 128mb08:28
hyper_chzorglu_: I'd go for the alternate install cd, it is less troublesome for installation08:29
zorglu_hyper_ch: what do you mean by 'afterward' ? after what ?08:29
hyper_chzorglu_: after installation ;)08:29
zorglu_ah ok :)08:29
hyper_chzorglu_: but 64mb is slow08:29
hyper_chzorglu_: you could of course use an alternate desktop08:30
hyper_chzorglu_: that would improve speed quite a bit08:30
zorglu_well i think that's gonna be good engouth08:30
hyper_chzorglu_: :)08:30
zorglu_i just want to do some ssh on it08:30
hyper_chzorglu_: what do you need a gui then for?08:31
zorglu_just in case i got some stuff to do in it08:31
zorglu_i dont want to go 'offstream' if i hit an issue08:32
zorglu_most doc are about gui, so gui is the easiest to handle08:32
hyper_chzorglu_: most docs aren't about the gui :)08:33
hyper_chzorglu_: the man pages are really excellent08:33

zorglu_ok ok sorry, i dont want to argue about it :)08:35
zorglu_forget i said that08:35
TheSheepobviously you never read any08:35
zorglu_ok more imporant cdimage.ubuntu.com just stopped the cd transfert in the middle :)08:35
hyper_chzorglu_: if you just want to ssh into it, I really wonder why you want a gui08:35
hyper_chzorglu_: resume it08:35

zorglu_hyper_ch: yep md5sum in progress08:37
zorglu_and md5 matches! :)08:38
hyper_chzorglu_: now burn it not quicker than 4x08:39

hyper_chzorglu_: depends what you want to do ;)08:41
zorglu_aka how large should be the 'partition'08:41
zorglu_hyper_ch: minimal stuff to play with08:42
hyper_chzorglu_: 4b should be fine then I think08:42
hyper_chzorglu_: 4gb08:42
zorglu_4gb is the small ? :)08:42
zorglu_wow :)08:42
hyper_chzorglu_: maybe less...08:42

zorglu_ok i will try with 4gbyte. ubuntu installer doesnt allows to choose the install componants, correct ?08:43
hyper_chzorglu_: nope, it doesn't08:43
TheSheephyper_ch: on xubuntu.org/get08:43
hyper_chTheSheep: why doesn't ubotu know about it?08:43
hyper_chzorglu_: and you need a swap partition08:43
zorglu_To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk. <- from http://xubuntu.org/get08:43
TheSheephyper_ch: because ubotu is global, for all *buntu channels08:43
hyper_chTheSheep: well, it could add a factoid for each distro08:44
zorglu_it is possible to put stuff for your special channel tho08:44
hyper_chzorglu_: it's 1.5 GB at least08:44
zorglu_it it explained in ubotu docs08:44
TheSheepzorglu_: then do it08:44

larryForgive me if this is heresy, but is there a way to get Java on Xubuntu 7.04?09:09
hyper_chlarry: sure, just install it09:10
rswolffhow to I edit my $PATH variable and persist it in multiple shells09:10
larryOkay, dumb question. Do you know where I can find a faq about it?09:10
hyper_chlarry: hmmm, have you opened add/remove programs?09:11
larryyes, but when I did a search for java, nothing came up09:11
hyper_chlarry: I guess you have to enable the other repositories09:11
hyper_chlarry: multiverse I think might be it09:11
larryi'll try that. Thanks.09:12
larryBye09:12
hyper_chrswolff: if you alter the $PATH variable on a running system, shouldn't it then always be the new one, no matter what shell?09:12
ricihyper_ch: $PATH is an environment variable.09:13
riciit's not a system configuration09:13
rswolffhyper_ch: I used the export command to add a new directory to my path statement, but when I close the terminal, and re-open it, my edits are gone09:13
hyper_chrici: I know... but sure you can alter it on the system09:13
hajhouseTheSheep: i think my problem with nonworking utf8 in xfce4-terminal is due to Xserver misconfiguration. the program works properly when run on the machine with the breakage over ssh -X displaying on the other machine.09:14
ricino, you can't. you can edit the shell startup command to set it09:14
hyper_chrswolff: no clue... never played with that09:14
rswolffrici: any thoughts?09:14
riciwell, that was my thought :)09:14
rswolffrici: how can I add a directory to my path variable so that it stays09:15
ricisee .bashrc for example09:15
riciin your home directory09:15
rswolffrici: can I just put the export statement in .bashrc?09:15
riciyes, .bashrc is executed whenever bash starts a shell09:15
rswolffrici: what is .bash_profile?09:16
riciit's the actual file which is run.09:16
ricithe first thing it does is execute .bashrc09:16
ricithe bash startup sequence is a little complex.09:16
riciman bash for details, but you'll get an awful lot of them09:17
rswolffI have a generic install of xubuntu 7, and I don't see a .bash_profile09:17
rswolffrici: I had to create one manually09:17
ricidid you have a .bashrc?09:17
ricithe files which are put by default into a newly-created user directory are in /etc/skel09:18
rswolffrici: I did have a .bashrc09:19
ricithe startup details are in man bash: /INVOCATION to find the section where they're all described09:19
ricibasically, .bash_profile is used for login shells and .bashrc is used for interactive non-login shells.09:20
ricithat's confusing, and generally .bash_profile does the stuff that should only be done at login, and then calls .bashrc09:21
riciso you'd usually have both, but i don't have a pristine install any more so i can't tell you what to expect.09:21
ricithere are also system-wide files in /etc09:21
zorglu_just put it in .profile :)09:22
ricithat works, too.09:23
