Cornell-wI had a machine running knoppmyth and the /myth directory was a two disk lvm.  I'm installing mythbuntu in the / partition.  I've installed it and left off with the beginning of the myth-setup.  During the install, it failed to get the nvidia driver.  So I'll need to get the driver myself, and I still don't know what I'll need to do about the lvm vg.  Should I continue the setup; or cancel out now,  get the driver, check on or set up01:08

DaveMorrisCornell-w: Did you want to keep your recording from knoppmyth?01:50
Cornell-wHopefully, DaveMorris.  They are mostly expendable, TV shows, but it would be nice to keep them.01:58
DaveMorrisdid you keep the records from the mysql database?01:58
Cornell-wI did a mysqldump all databases and scp'd the result to another machine01:58
DaveMorristhat makes it easier then :)01:59
Cornell-wQuite ;-)01:59
DaveMorrisI'm not sure if it'll work, but I'd be tempted to import that database dump into mysql01:59
DaveMorrisno harm in trying01:59
Cornell-wIf I can "hookup" the existing vg without losing/recreating it.  I've been trying to figure that part out for about two weeks (as long as my knoppmyth's been dead)01:59
DaveMorrisyou can hook up the vg I've done it before, (not with mythtv though)02:00
=== dpraedan [n=dprae@pool-96-233-76-43.bstnma.fios.verizon.net] has left #ubuntu-mythtv []
Cornell-wYup, no harm in trying, worst case, delete'm all and start fresh... but... knoppmyth uses /myth for the recordings, apparently mythbuntu uses /var/lib/myth, will it be necessary to change data in the database?02:01
Cornell-wPlease, Please, Please, DaveMorris, tell me how, or point me to a good page, I've been looking for weeks :-(02:01
DaveMorrisnah02:01
DaveMorrissorry, that was meant to be nah, just symlink from /myth to /var/lib/myth02:03
Cornell-wI've googled, asked in #ubuntu, #lvm, a local lug, nada...  almost nada, one guy said no problem, it'll be recognized.  (is suspicious, that's too easy ;-) )02:03
Cornell-wOf course... don't change the data, change the directory... hard link or soft?02:03
DaveMorrishttp://gentoo-wiki.com/Recovering_RAID_and_LVM (skip the bit about raid)02:03
=== Cornell-w is not a total linux newbie, but nowhere near expert
DaveMorrisremember you need to install the lvm2 package though02:04
DaveMorrisbtw you won't damage the data on the disks as your not writing for them with those commands02:05
Cornell-wvgscan; vgchange?  That's it?02:05
Cornell-wYup, install nvidia-glx and lvm2 and openssh02:06
DaveMorrisby the look of things (I recoverd my lvm back when I was on gentoo, hence why I've pointed you to that one)02:06
Cornell-wI don't suppose you'll be on tomorrow evening (it's now 0809 where I'm at) that's the next time I'll be able to spend much time on this.02:07
Cornell-wYou've been very helpful, and I don't want to lose you ;-)02:07
DaveMorrisI'm in the UK02:07
DaveMorrisbut I'm here quite often, or poke superm1 he is states side02:07
Cornell-wSo it's...1300 there?02:07
DaveMorrisyeah02:08
DaveMorrisI'm busy tomorrow evening, but I'm normally logged on whilst I'm at work02:08
Cornell-wOh, and I've installed with the livecd and am just beginning the setup.  Shall I punch out, do the apt-gets, vgscan, vgchange, and then restart the setup (myth-setup command? ) ?  What do you think?02:09
DaveMorrisyeah, I'd punch out02:09
DaveMorrisit can always be launched again easily02:09
Cornell-wCool, thanks02:10
Cornell-wThe launch command is myth-setup?02:11
=== Cornell-w is wondering how much different mythbuntu is from knoppmyth ;-)

DaveMorriscornell: you mean the login window?10:41
cornellWell, there's two... after ending the myth, there was one, narrow and tall, and I picked the option to restart.  THen I got the blue screen and yellow flower, and it had an option to restart also, I hit the restart, screen goes black, then back to blue with flower.10:42

OutlierI have a question about basic setup - is it wise to use RAID or should I stick to LVM ?10:53
superm1well depends on what you are looking for out of the box?10:53
superm1and what type of raid setup you'd have10:53
OutlierProbably RAID 5, spread over 6 disks, with the OS in a 7th disk.  Some of the disks are IDE, others SATA.10:54
superm1that being the case, RAID would work much better for you10:54
superm1LVM if a disk is to die that's the end of the group10:54
superm1whereas you will have your parity here and be able to pull a disk out safely10:55
OutlierAh - I had a (mistaken) impression that with LVM, if a disk dies, you just lose capacity and whatever was stored on that disk.10:55
superm1well if there is a way to recover the rest of the group, i'd love to know :).  I've got some stuff lost on an LVM group from last year10:56
superm1that i haven't formatted the rest of the disks yet10:56
OutlierWell, like I said, I had that impression but am probably wrong there.  I hear LVM is very hard to deal with when it goes wrong.  My experience with software raid via mdadm is that it's pretty friendly.10:58
superm1well also do realize that with mythtv 0.21 later this year, there are storage groups10:59
superm1so you dont need to do raid or lvm to spread recordings across disks10:59
DaveMorriswhich will be nice :)11:00
OutlierWell - I'll be honest, I'm going for a Linux MCE setup here - so the version of mythtv may be older than that.11:00
DaveMorristhe other option is to use a raid card which displays all the disks as one drive11:01
OutlierTrue, but that's not attractive in my case - some of the drives are SATA, some PATA so software RAID seems like a good idea.11:01
OutlierAll in all, I think RAID sounds best - just have to re-do the whole thing to add storage later.11:03
DaveMorrisone word of advice though, don't stick you host OS on the raid11:03
DaveMorrissince mythtv eats disks due to writing and removing large files all the time11:04
OutlierThanks11:05
DaveMorrisI've got my OS on an old 10GB drive11:05
DaveMorrisand a 500GB sata for my storage11:05
