TexasTwistersbalneav, you assisted me last Friday with a problem nic that was not recognized on a new Dell system.  Found a resolution...04:50
TexasTwisterNeeded to install a package: linux-backports-modules_2.6.20-1604:50
TexasTwisterThanks for the help -- just wanted to follow up.04:51
TexasTwisterAnyone here with experience configuring an LTSP server in Edubuntu?04:51
sbalneavI've had a bit of experience :)04:53
sbalneavTexasTwister: What do you need help with?04:54
TexasTwisterI'm trying to configure this at home, before taking it to the school.  I have the two NICs, one ... hang on... might have found my own problem...04:54
TexasTwisterYep... think I've got it now.... Of all the dumb stuff to overlook!  At the school I was going to leave the LTSP network on the 192.168.0 network and use 192.168.1 for my external-facing network.  But I had forgotten that my home router is handing out 192.168.0 addresses -- so it was addressing conflicts.05:01
TexasTwisterWhen I am running an LTSP session as student1 (a non-privileged user) and trying to use the Thin Client manager on the server to monitor student1, I get the message "Unavailable: Install X11vnc on the client".  So...05:12
sbalneavCheck on the wiki for x11vnc05:14
sbalneavit needs some poking to get it to work.05:14
TexasTwisterAs student1, I used "su - scott" (scott is an admin user) and then "sudo apt-get install X11vnc" and got it installed.  Then I started it.  But refreshing the screen still shows unavailable.  Okay... will do...05:14
sbalneavYou'll have to install it in the chroot.05:14
TexasTwisterI tried to follow these instructions: https://wiki.edubuntu.org/InstallX11VncOnLtspClients?highlight=%28x11vnc%29#Quick ... but not only did the vnc not work, something about it allows the server's hd partitions to show up on the desktop of the LTSP session -- NOT good! :-)05:43
=== TexasTwister continues to poke around in the wiki...
boyamTexasTwister, check out the forums...folks have gotten it to work in this thread...http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=406220&highlight=edubuntu05:53
boyammof i got mine working with this thread...adding the -shared to rc.local seems to have gotten me over my hump...05:54
TexasTwisterthanks all... no joy yet, I'll come back to it later...06:23

Nuba1hi... Some of the terminals in my computer network are giving out sessions to the ltsp clients. I imagine this is because the server cd was installed to the harddisk of these computers... what can I do to disable these computers from giving out sessions to my ltsp terminals... I've disabled and uninstalled dhcp3, but something else is giving out the sessions after the dhcp server gives them their details05:49
Nuba1that is to say, this is apart from the regular ltsp server which should be the only one giving out sessions05:49
ograwell, that should also be your only dhcp server05:50
Nuba1it is05:50
ograthe dhcp server tells the clients where to boot from05:50
Nuba1well, why is it booting from the dhcp server and then giving a session on a different computer altogether05:51
ograand if you only have one running it will only point to your ltsp server05:51
ograso i assume you have another dhcp server running somewhere05:51
=== Castigador [n=Alfredo@88.Red-80-38-9.staticIP.rima-tde.net] has joined #edubuntu
ograldm is hardcoded to user the bootserver as connection server ...05:51
Nuba1well, I've check and disabled all other dhcp servers... it looks like it is starting up from the central dhcp server... I mean, I cant have 2 dhcps servers with the same address can I?05:51
ograso i see no way that it could connect to something different than the dhcp server it recieved the data from05:52
ogranot if they are not configured identically05:52
ograand even then you might get half the answer on the srequest from one and the rest from another dhcpd05:52
ograjust dont run more than one ...05:53
Nuba1ok, there is one dhcp server on a different network altogether...05:53
Nuba1but thats just a router05:53
ograbeyond that i'd disable netbooting in the BIOS of the machines you dont want to be thin clients05:53
Nuba1well, I'll have another look around05:53
Nuba1yeah, in the mba I have an option for local or network booting05:54
Nuba1I've set all the cards to local05:54
Nuba1thats correct right?05:54
ograyes05:55
=== JohanSalim [n=guest@ip84-223.cbn.net.id] has joined #edubuntu
Nuba1right, I'll have another look around... so it must be a dhcp server05:55
ograif you have set them to local, there is no physical way for them to netboot ...05:55
Nuba1well, its doing it... I know this because the computer in question will not load on my regular ltsp network due to the fglrx problem05:56
ograwell, it cant :)05:56
ographysically05:57
ogra...05:57
ograunless you have two NICs in there and disabled the wrong one05:57
Nuba1nope05:57
ograare you sure you saved the BIOS changes ?05:57
Nuba1maybe the card is not working then, I dont know... but it is definetly loading a different computer than the regular dhcp server05:57
ograwell, it cant netboot if you disabled netbooting in the BIOS05:58
Nuba1wait, this is the network card bios05:58
Nuba1not the regular bios05:58
ograthere is no technical way to work around that05:58
Nuba1in the 3com cards there is an option to hit alt+cntrl+b05:58
ografor a boot menu05:58
ograwell, look in the regula BIOS05:59
Nuba1u select there whether u want local net boot, or network net boot05:59
ogra*regular05:59
ograthere should be something about the boot order etc05:59
Nuba1yeah, thats all fine... this computer is a ltsp thin terminal... it should boot from the regular dhcp server05:59
ograwell, i'm talkin g about the ones that shouldnt05:59
ograindeed06:00
Nuba1what is happening is its getting details from another computer, but starting up with the regular dhcp server (at least according to the network settings)06:00
Nuba1my question is, in the pxe boot menu06:00
Nuba1what should it be set to, local or network06:00
ogralocal06:00
Nuba1sorry, remote06:00
ograunless you want them netbooting06:00
Nuba1this is the pxe menu, not bios...06:01
Nuba1gives me option for remote booting or local, but all via pxe06:01
ograright06:01
ogralook in the BIOS06:01
ograthere should be an option as well06:01
Nuba1so ignore the pxe then?06:01
ograno06:02
Nuba1yeah, the bios is set to MBA (being the pxe boot menu)06:02
ogradisable it in both06:02
ograright06:02
ograswitch away from that06:02
Nuba1but I want this computer to be a ltsp computer06:02
ogra*sigh*06:02
ograswitch away from that *on the computers that netboot while they shouldnt*06:02
