snadgelibc etc is all 686 (i think)10:04
snadgea mate of mine is coming around now with a gentoo install10:04
Tomcat_I've always read that it doesn't matter... and the small knowledge I gained from CPU architecture tells me the same... but I never saw benchmarks. I might be wrong. :)10:05
snadgeyes.. it doesnt matter.. thats why every dist switched to 686 compilation10:05
Tomcat_Well, it does matter, but not hugely. That's what I meant.10:05
snadgebut if you have a crusoe processor.. it takes an extreme performance hit10:05
Tomcat_Mh, okay.10:05
snadgewell you get gains on anything even remotely p6 based10:05
snadgehence reason for switching default optimisation10:06
Tomcat_Yeah, I guess the Crusoe is quite different, because it isn't directly based on i386 or something...10:06
snadgethats right.. highest optimisation level that works decently with it.. is 58610:06
snadgeie.. in between 486 and pentium10:06
snadgei wonder if it would be worth releasing a version of gobuntu, with 386 optimisations.. for poverty/3rd world computers10:08
snadgeit could just run icewm.. or whatever xubuntu uses10:09
Amaranthafaik we use 486 because the via is missing one of the 586 instructions10:09
snadgebut what about libc.. and kernel?10:10
Amaranthor it might be we use 586 because via is missing a 686 instruction, can't remember10:10
snadgeand X etc10:10
stdinsnadge: run "dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE" that's shows i486-linux-gnu is the default for debs10:10
Amaranthsnadge: there is libc6 and libc6-i68610:10
snadgewhich is installed by default?10:10
snadgelooks like libc6.. hmm10:11
snadgethere goes that theory then, i wonder what changed between debian 2.1 days and debian 3.. optimisation wise10:12
Amaranthsnadge: the packages are tuned for the p4 though10:12
snadgethats the problem10:12
snadgecrusoe eats it with p4 optimisations10:12
Amaranthhmm10:13
Amaranthcrusoe has very shallow pipeline?10:13

jscinozusing the binary package from nvidia.com10:15
snadgethe crusoe is a risc processor, that has an x86 translation layer thats implemented in software10:17
snadgewell it has an instruction translator thats like firmware10:17
snadgethe p4 optimisations makes the instruction translator stall10:17
ggilbertjscinoz: The nvidia thing isn't fixable10:17
ggilbertit's a buggy patch in xorg10:18
snadgethe technology was miles ahead of its time.. intel basically stole a lot of the optimisations and used them fore core2.. hence energy efficiency gains10:18
ggilbertIt should be updated reasonably soon, but until then you can either use compiz or opengl apps, but not both10:18
snadgeAmaranth: what do you mean packages are optimised for p4 when they're built with -m486?10:19
Amaranthsnadge: they're tuned for the p4 but only use 486 instructions10:19
snadgeso its not possible to undo the p4 tuning options.. without recompiling all the .deb packages?10:19
Amaranthjscinoz: what version of the driver?10:19
Amaranthsnadge: right10:19
Amaranthjscinoz: the 100.14.11 driver _sucks_10:20
snadgeok.. so without trying to sound like a troll.. is there any real reason why i shouldn't try gentoo?10:20
Amaranthit falls over if you look at it wrong10:20
Amaranthsnadge: go ahead10:20
ggilbertTo keep up to date on the issue, keep an eye on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/13032510:20
ubotuLaunchpad bug 130325 in xorg "[nvidia-glx-new]  3D GL apps crash X when using compiz (gutsy)" [Undecided,Confirmed] 10:20
Amaranthsnadge: as long as it's not windows i don't care :)10:20
snadgesince gentoo allows you to easily recompile everything with custom compile options10:20
snadgeas far as i know.. debian or ubuntu would be a much more  manual process?10:21
Amaranthsnadge: probably take you a couple weeks to compile everything on such a puny processor though :)10:21
snadgeim going to run from command line.. until its finished10:21
snadgeits just a shame transmeta are pretty much nonexistant now10:21
snadgei was thinking of buying a core2 system with intel chipset onboard because its so cheap10:22
snadgethen i can just use gutsy, and its a no brainer10:22
snadgebut i would still have this legacy platform that would then be essentially useless10:23
Amaranththey got outmaneuvered, it happens10:23
Amaranthshouldn't hold on to something that's dead10:23
snadgeapparently their legal case against intel has merit, which is quite sad10:24
snadgeintel "appropriating" that technology.. made the performance per watt gains of the crusoe architecture, irrelevant10:24
snadgewhich has forced them out of the niche market they were aiming for10:25
jscinozI cant install the 9755 driver10:25
jscinozX fails to start after installing it10:25
jscinozonly 100.14.11 works10:26
snadgei spent $1000 on a 550mhz crusoe 5/14" single board computer.. that uses 20watts of energy (total).. and now its just a novelty item :)10:27
