nikolamlalala hello08:48
nikolamWhy *oh* why (X)ubuntu start in root shell WITHOUT asking password, every time some UUID of some partition changes outside xubuntu?08:49
nikolamGiving root shell to anyone is *serious* security risk08:49
zoredachenikolam: because noobs use the system08:53
zoredacheplus, if people have physical access to the machine your secureity is compromised anyway08:54
zoredacheit would take them what, and extra 30 seconds to boot off a usb device and become root08:54
zoredacheor livecd or whatever....  Anyway, the point is if they have physical access you are screwed...  If you 'harden' your hardware to the point where it can't be easily tampered with then take a few minutes and set a root password or disable sulogon08:55
nikolamOnly I have access to machine. Question is why oh why it AUTOMATICLY is giving root access to anyone if lowsy Partition ID is changed???08:57
nikolamThat is Bug, serious BUG08:58
zoredachebecuase for 99% of the users, that means something is seriously broke and they need to have root to fix it08:58
nikolamI dont want to even think it is intentionaly done..08:58
nikolamBut what if some maintance is done (like now) and that is network workstation in company?08:59
=== zoredache shrugs
zoredacheoh... for your workstations on a network... setup encryption on the drive08:59

zoredacheI still don't see how you think it is that big of a deal09:02
nikolamEveryone get ROOT access by default, - not a big deal??09:02
zoredachea person can bypass it anyway whatever distro you use by simply booting off a livecd09:02
nikolamYes, but not getting root access automatically if it changes UUID09:03
nikolamI will see if simply setting up root password will change things and I will test it and get back09:03
zoredachewhy would a uuid change?09:03
zoredachehow is it going to change unless they are already root?09:03
nikolamzoredache: I dont understand your reasoning.09:04
nikolamLet us say some wannabe hacker09:04
nikolamManaged somehow to change uuid09:04
nikolamI will get back after setting root password and testing09:05
zoredacheit is my opinion that if they are smart enough to do that, and they have physical access to the box, then the problem you worrired about is irrelavent09:05

AstralJavaHey guys, just a question regarding System Load Monitor applet, I see the memory section reporting "Memory: 106MB of 377MB used", but when I look at  `top' output on a console, it says "Mem:   386100k total,   377556k used,   8544k free,   19904k buffers". That just doesn't add up, so I wondered whether there's anyone here who could tell me about SLM-applet's inner secrets, and how it diggs up that number? Thanks. :)03:53
maxamillionAstralJava: well it has to do with how they look at the memory hierarchy ... i believe top breaks it up into memory that is paged and index including ram that is currently cached but i think SLM just looks at what is currently being actively used by applications03:56
AstralJavaAlright, I figured it's something like this, but wasn't sure. Thanks for the explanation, maxamillion! :)03:57
maxamillionAstralJava: anytime :)03:59
maxamillionAstralJava: another application you might want to look into is called htop ... its in the repository but isn't installed by default04:00
maxamillionAstralJava: its like top but prettier and color codes different sections of the memory usage, green is active, i believe blue is paged, and i think orange is cached04:00
=== maxamillion isn't too sure on the color coding, so don't hold him to it

AstralJavaI was gonna say "I also like that it shows the keys to work it out", but then realized it doesn't work, F10 is for Quit, but hitting it opens the File menu, which isn't very nice actually. :)04:07
AstralJavaBut oh well, I can live with that. :)04:07
maxamillionAstralJava: its written in the ncurses library and will allow you to click on the menus with the mouse if you prefer .... the reason the F keys don't all work is because of key bindings specific to the terminal emulator you are using ... i know xfce4-terminal and gnome-terminal both don't let it work all the way, but when in just a tty it works04:08
AstralJavaYes of course, silly me. :) Well like I said, I can manage, and no, didn't realize one can click on menus with mouse. I usually tend to stay away from the mouse though, but as `q' works for Quit, I'm fine as it is. :)04:11
maxamillionawesome :)04:12
maxamillionAstralJava: you will also notice that if you move the arrow keys up and down you can view through all the processes which is yet another thing i really like when compared to top04:12
AstralJavaYeah, it seems to be quite an improvement when compared to top, really. Good advice, thanks again. :)04:13
maxamillionAstralJava: anytime :)04:15

Nevermindcheers for the help DuClare, helped alot :P05:20
DuClareNevermind, glad I could actually help05:20
DuClareNevermind, I'm sure there are gui tools out there if you like05:20
DuClarebut I don't personally use any05:20
NevermindNext one for you then...05:20
DuClareI've bound my multimedia keys to change the volume so I rarely need to access the whole mixer05:21
DuClareand alsamixer is just fine when needed. ;)05:21
Nevermind:O how did you do that, cos i have a standard Dell keyboard with the FN keys, how do i get them to work05:21
Nevermind'cos that was the first thing i wanted, but i just thought, for the time being..05:21
DuClareumm first I created a xmodmap file which binds my multimedia (actually web) keys to XF86Audio*05:22
DuClarebasically keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume etc.05:22
DuClareused some tool, xev maybe? to find out the keycodes05:22
DuClarethen I use xbindkeys to actually bind XF86AudioLowerVolume to do something05:22
Nevermindcheers,05:22
DuClarein my case, I bound it to run the command "aumix -v -5"05:23
Nevermindso xev, and xbindkeys are the things i need to look for05:23
DuClarexev is most probably installed already05:23
Nevermindk05:23
Nevermindcheers,05:23
Nevermindwhere bobuts would i find it05:24
Nevermind>05:24
DuClareit opens up an "event tester" window, activate it and press some keys, it'll show the keycodes... some keys may not work out of the box tho05:24
DuClareopen up a terminal and type xev05:24
DuClare:)05:24
Nevermind:P05:24

DuClareI can't remember what to do with the keys that don't work out of the box -- but there is a way to make them work, I know...05:24
thewhiterabbithi! i've just added a harddisk to my pc. is there a graphic way to mount it? and how can i format it? thank you!05:25
DuClarethere are tools whose name start with mkfs05:25
DuClareeg. mkfs.ext305:25
DuClarewhich can be used to format... (= create a filesystem)05:25
DuClaredon't know about gui tools05:26
DuClareof course you might have to partition it first05:26
DuClarewith luck your file manager would display any partitioned / formatted volumes and let you mount them graphically. just a wild guess. :)05:27

Nevermindit doesn t recognise the FN key05:29
DuClarewhat is exactly the fn key?05:29
DuClareif it's the key that swaps between Fkeys and mediakeys... I don't think it's supposed to be recognized05:29
DuClarebut instead switch to mediakeys with it and then press the mediakeys05:30
Nevermindit's a key that when pressed with a normal key it activates a different setting to it, like Pgup is page up, but FN+pgup is volume up05:30
DuClareso hmm05:30
DuClareif you press FN+pgup, does xev display the same keycode as with only pageup, without pressing fn?05:30
Nevermindyes05:30
Nevermind:(05:31

Nevermindno sorry, it comes up as a different keycode05:33
Nevermindpgup is 99 whilst fn+pgup is 17605:33

DuClarethat's what will let you bind to fn+pgup :)05:33
Nevermindk05:33
Nevermindnow i've got the keydcode, now what do i do?05:34
DuClareagain, no clue if there are gui tools... but you can create an xmodmap file05:34
Nevermind...how?05:34
DuClareeg. in your home directory, name it anything you want, I named mine 'xmodmap.multimediakeys'05:34
Nevermindok05:34
Nevermindso how do i do this...05:35

DuClareeg. xmodmap /home/duclare/xmodmap.multimediakeys05:48
Nevermindok05:48
DuClareafter that... well, with luck, some applications might actually detect the keypresses and do whatever they should... though, that was not the case for me, and that's what I use xbindkeys for05:48
Nevermindso thats why it aint working yet :P05:48
DuClareso you might have to find out whether xbindkeys is installed on your system... (xbindkeys is a tool that binds a keypress to run a command, eg. when you press xf86audioraisevolume, it'll run a command that'll increase vol..)05:49
Nevermindso i open terminal and write xmodmap /home/alex/xmodmap.fnkeys05:49

SliceDactually,  it just said it cant find the package10:33
steve___ok open a terminal10:34
SliceDwell, hold on lemme show you what I'm looking at,  that way you can see what I was trying to do10:35
SliceDhttp://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/MsimInstall10:35
SliceDabout 3/4 way down it has the "easy"... ubuntu instructions I cant seem to work10:36
SliceDheh10:36
steve___that's compiling it from source10:37
SliceDI think for this to work pidgin has to be recompiled10:37
steve___i wouldn't bother with that10:37
steve___espically when the binary is right there10:37
SliceDI need the myspaceIM part of it though,  doesnt that need to be incorporated into the source?10:37
SliceDthat's not just instructions for getting pidgin, its to get pidgin with myspaceim support10:39
steve___do you have pidgin installed?10:40
SliceDno10:40
steve___ahh crap, i have to go10:41
steve___i'll bbin 90min10:42
SliceDthnx for the time anyway,  I'll piddle with it till i get it10:43

ochosihouston, we have a problem. i just wanted to put the nvidia module into my kernel, ran the "sudo m-a update" and then the "prepare" commands and when i wanted to enter "m-a auto-install nvidia" i forgot the nvidia and now the module-assistant keeps on putting ALL the packages he can into my kernel... is there any way of undoing this and removing all the useless modules from my kernel?12:27
ochosiactually, now he's giving me a ton of error messages about packages he couldn't insert into my kernel (some of them which are already there, like alsa for instance)12:27
