EvaLuaTemaybe i'm not doing it right ...01:51
ajmitchyou have an MTA installed?01:51

Janet32766can anyone tell me why my static IP addr keeps changing (feisty)? /etc/network/interfaces lists interface as static10:39
sorenCould you throw your entire /etc/network/interfaces onto pastebin?10:40
soren!pastebin10:40
ubotupastebin is a service to post large texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the #ubuntu channel topic)10:40
Janet32766i would, but i now can't ssh in to the box that has the issue, from memory, /etc/network/interfaces is iface eth0 inet static10:45
Janet32766and works fine for several hours after an ifdown/ifup10:46
Janet32766but then changes to an IP that looks like a DHCP assigned addr10:49
Janet32766first started happening when i was running iptraf (monitor) as root, i wonder if some odd promiscus mode issue10:51

Janet32766any ideas how to resolve?11:15
Janet32766besides putting ifup/ifdown in cron every minute :))11:16
sorenJanet32766: Um..11:16
sorenJanet32766: Is this a server?11:16
Janet32766y11:16
sorenJanet32766: ...and you have network-manager installed?11:16
Janet32766i installed a fairly generic edubuntu server , didn't specifically install nm11:17
sorenAh, edubuntu.11:17
sorenUm.. No, I don't think that involves nm.11:18
sorenJanet32766: Did you perhaps install it using dhcp and then later switch it to static?11:18
soren...and not reboot(!) it inbetween?11:18
sorenYou see, ifupdown doesn't maintain much state in between invocations.11:19
Janet32766could be, not, a reboot has occurred, but my eth1 interface changed to eth2 for no reason last boot11:19
sorenAll it knows is "yes, i've configured this interface". If it's been brought up while configured as dhcp, ifup has started dhclient. If the config is changed to static and then ifdown is ran, it doesn't kill the dhclient, because it doesn't know that it started it (because it doesn't know that it was a dhcp interface when it was upped).11:20
sorenso chances are that theres a dhclient still around that might be refreshing its IP every now and again. An hours lease time on dhcp sounds sensible enough.11:21
Janet32766kill dhclient?11:22
sorenYup.11:22
sorenWell, pkill or killall, bt you get the idea.11:22
Janet32766any idea why my eth1 boots as eth2 sometimes? that may have been the start of this issue, as eth1 was static, nut now it's not in /etc/network/interfaces, eth2 is11:23
sorenIt's hard to say. Which version of Ubuntu?11:23
Janet32766fei11:23
Janet3276670411:24

ajmitch17:43 < slangasek> well, there are some behavior differences when using the cups support, last time I used it there was some raciness on startup because cups would accept connections and provide printer lists to smbd queries before it had finished loading its own list of printers10:45
ajmitch17:44 < slangasek> but that was years ago, I have no idea if that's a current issue or if there are other issues taking its place10:45
