slackernJust curious if anyone know what transfer speeds would be achievable on a Pentium 3 500Mhz with 448mb ram and with 2 3com cards using the 3c905 modules when it's acting as a router and firewall? Would it be able to handle maybe an 80% throughput on a 100mbit connection?04:09
=== xjdriver69 [n=aaron@pool-71-186-11-46.chi01.dsl-w.verizon.net] has joined #ubuntu-server
PanzerMKZthat should be possible04:37
slackernI guess i'll see how well it works, to much work rearranging everything here at home to try the throughput and i can only get around 50mbits downstream from my isp at home at it handled that atleast04:39
PanzerMKZdarn04:40
PanzerMKZthat is nice04:40
PanzerMKZover here the speeds are no where near that04:40
slackernYeah it's quite nice buts it's capped for upstream to around 180k/sec and 55 mbit i only get during late nights, daytime it's around 25-35 but thats good enough, it's darn cheap here through the local cable supplier04:42
PanzerMKZouch04:42
PanzerMKZon the upstream04:42
PanzerMKZover here we get 256k or above04:42
slackernoh i ment 180kilobyte/sec not kilobit04:43
PanzerMKZok04:43
PanzerMKZthat is a world of difference04:43
slackernbut still it's not too exciting :)04:43
PanzerMKZonly 50KB max here04:43
PanzerMKZno it ain't but it is nicer then us04:43
kgoetzwow you must suffer... i hae 64k symetric mostof the time here04:43
PanzerMKZbut that is at work04:44
PanzerMKZat home I am on dial up04:44

slackernNot sure if it will route anything at all yet since the 100/100 connection has 2 IP's so it might just be standing there as a little simple server for hosting a few webpages and a shell04:46
PanzerMKZwow04:47
PanzerMKZthen that should work ok04:47
PanzerMKZof course I got a freebie dual p304:48

senseiI hope you can help, it might be me being lame, or it might be pure magic.. We've got two ubuntu servers which every odd 10 minutes loses connectivity. Can't SSH in, can't ping, nothing.. If I go to the servers, ping an external address, then it works and I can SSH in again for another ten or so minutes.. There's no networkmanager, avahi or anything that could automagically reconfigure anything running. I suspected the e100 driver after reading some 09:27
senseiThere's an ARP entry in the router for both machines as they boot up, then if I clear the ARP, they don't get a new one09:27
senseiBut if I go in and ping something, it gets one09:27
senseiand I can connect back in09:27
sorenDo they have a firewall installed?09:28
senseiNops, not yet09:28
senseiThere are other devices in the switch that works, and I tried plugging them into those sockets to rule out the switch09:28
sorenYour post comment was cut short.. The last bit I got was: "e100 driver after reading some"09:29
sorenYour09:29
sorengah..09:29
sorenYour *first* comment was...09:29
senseisome negative comments on it on mailing lists, so I put a realtek basedcard in there, but got the same result09:29
sorenAh, ok.09:29
sorenThat's interesting.09:30
senseidmesg doesn't show any "lost link" or something like that either, LEDs on the NIC glows and blinks, but there's just nothing going through them09:30
senseiIndeed :) If it wasn't for the deadline, I'd be thrilled09:30
sorenNo, it smells like it just doesn't respond to arp requests at all.09:31
senseiIndeed09:31
sorenIs this a reasonably fresh install?09:33
sorenOr have you done a lot of tweaking of it?09:33
senseiAs of 6pm yesterday09:33
sorenThat's pretty fresh :)09:34
senseiNo tweaking yet, this happened straight after install as well, so I apt-got all the updates available, but it keeps doing it09:34
senseiIndeed :)09:34
sorenYou could try looking at a tcpdump to see if it ever actually receives any arp requests.09:34
sorenOh, hang on.09:36
senseiThat's a good idea. I was also thinking about putting a laptop up on the same IP, to see if that one dies as well09:36
sorenIs it at all possible that there might be another machine on the network with the same ip?09:36
sorenNamely one that doesn't respond to ping or ssh or anything?09:37

senseiConsiderably more who-has than replies, but to be honest, I'm not overly sure what's normal when it comes to ARP10:17
senseiAh, 'reply' is when something is asking the machine and who-has is an outgoing query, so that'd be normal then10:18
sorenWell, yes.10:19

wolfeySIokey one problem06:16
wolfeySIi want to keep my old database06:16

wolfeySI/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed06:16

wolfeySIso to what this user must have access?06:17
ivoksfor upgrades of mysql06:17

wolfeySIor what06:18
ivokssoren: um... where are logs? :)06:18

wolfeySIthx guys.. new server works so much better than old06:43
wolfeySIand all data and most of config safely copied06:43
wolfeySI:)06:43
mralphabetwolfeySI: You seem to have things working again, what was the change that made it work for you?  You seem to have went from Start: FAIL to asking about db's so I am just curious . . .06:44

lafumahey, does anyone use ISPconfig ?06:46
wolfeySIi tried to install it... realized it's pointless06:47
lafumawhy is that ?06:47
lafumaeasier to do everything just manually ?06:48
wolfeySIwell main reason was, that compile failed06:48
wolfeySInow i know i should do apt-get install build-essential06:48
wolfeySIbut then i didnt06:48
lafumaokay06:49

wolfeySIand imap06:51
lafumayeah, nowadays mail clients have spam filters built in ;)06:51
lafumanice06:51
lafumathats exactly what i need06:52
wolfeySIdunno how updated it is06:52
ivokswolfeySI: that's not what we said06:52
wolfeySIbut... it worked for me (with some trial and error)06:52
ivoksi've said you shouldn't touch my.cnf06:52
wolfeySIivoks: you said i'm impolite to you06:52
wolfeySI:)06:52
lafuma2006 end06:52
ivoksand put your config in conf.d/06:52

wolfeySIivoks: i'll do that in a year when disk dies06:53
wolfeySI:06:53
wolfeySI:)06:53
ivoksjust don't come here again when upgrade of mysql overwrites default my.cnf06:53
ivoks:)06:53
wolfeySIivoks: but is it just my impression06:53
wolfeySIor gentoo is actually easier to configure than ubuntu?06:53
wolfeySIcause gentoo doesnt try to be smart in debian-way06:54
ivoksi'ts hard when you force logicA on logicB06:54
ivoksthat's why there are so many windowse users, while linux is much better06:54
wolfeySIit seems problem with binary distributions... if you dont do it their way, they are angry06:54
ivoksif you understand debian logic, you will find benefits of it06:54
wolfeySIthat's why i left fedora world forever and switched to gentoo for my home pc06:55
ivokstell me, what happens when you upgrade mysql on gentoo?06:55
ivoksand there are some changes in my.cnf06:55
ivoksyou get two files06:55
wolfeySIit asks me what to do06:55
ivoksand you should manually pick new things from new my,cnf06:55
ivokson ubuntu, if you put you my.cnf in conf.d, no one asks you anything, and everything works06:56
wolfeySIoh now i remember where i was mosty angry at ubuntu06:56
wolfeySIubuntu by default blocks cups web interface, cause i should do it from gnome?!06:57
wolfeySIi had to find out to which group user must be added06:57
wolfeySIso i could use web interface06:57
ivoksthat's not true?06:57
wolfeySIit is06:57
wolfeySIat least for admin part06:57
ivoksi'm in ubuntu printing team :)06:57
wolfeySIby default you cant log in as cups admin06:57
ScottKwolfeySI: That's probably just a side effect of Ubuntu changing CUPS to not run as Root.  That IMO was a very good decision from a security perspective.06:57
ivoksas on any distribution, users in lpadmin group have all the rights06:58
wolfeySIivoks: root doesnt06:58
wolfeySIthat troubled me06:58
wolfeySIoh and one another06:58
wolfeySIif i'm in Xwin... and i in console 'su root'06:58
ivoksroot also06:58
wolfeySIroot cant use my desktop for programs06:58
wolfeySIsome security thing06:58
wolfeySIso i cant do sudo kate06:59
wolfeySIi must do kde-su kate06:59
ivoksthat's on all distros :D06:59
lafumais there something similar to ISPconfig, that can handle my apache and postfix ?06:59
lafumaover web06:59
ivokswhat's wrong with ispconfig?06:59
lafumai'm just too damn dumb to use it07:00
lafumai couldnt get email accounts working07:00
ivoks:)07:00
wolfeySIivoks: nope07:00
lafumaalso it indicated me that none of the services worked "offline" although they were running07:00
wolfeySIin gentoo i can be in Xorg as user and when i run something as root, it appears on Xorg07:00
wolfeySIbecause i have no security manager for Xorg?! ;)07:00
lafumai would gladly use it, if you have time to answer to some of my questions07:00
ivokswolfeySI: then gentoo has security problems07:00
ScottKlafuma: For getting Postfix and Email working, my recommendation is to buy a copy of "The Book of Postfix" and work from that.07:00
wolfeySIivoks: well gentoo is not automatic... you do what you want07:01
ivokslafuma: ispconfig on ubuntu is 5 minutes work07:01
ivokslafuma: i have it and it works great... i even have uptime of 200 days with it07:01
lafumaheh07:01
lafumai got it working07:01
lafumaofcourse07:01
lafumabut it has some errors07:01
lafumaand i have no clue why07:01
lafumabrb07:02
wolfeySIivoks: one stupid question07:04
wolfeySIdo you know how to add a custom service at boot? let's say more user level, after most is loaded07:04
wolfeySIi remember having it in /etc/rc2.d07:04
wolfeySIas S99MyService07:04
wolfeySIis that ok?07:04
ivoksyou should create init script in /etc/init.d/07:05
ivoksand then use update-rc.d07:05
ivoksor you can do it like you did07:05
wolfeySIyeh but there was some command07:05
wolfeySIto add it07:05
ivoksto add it where?07:05
ivoksrunlevel?07:05
wolfeySIto init scripts07:05
wolfeySIyes07:05
ivoksas i said, create a script in /etc/init.d/mambojambo07:06
ivoksupdate-rc.d mambojambo defaults07:06
wolfeySIbut then i must do some scripting for start restart stop07:06
ivokswell, of course07:06
wolfeySIi want it simple07:07
wolfeySIjust that it loads07:07
wolfeySIrc.local would do too07:07
ivoksor rc.local, yes07:07
wolfeySIi have some lovely java programs written for us07:08
wolfeySIso boss can add product images for web shop from java.. click... it is sent to server and thumbnails are created by imagemagick07:09
wolfeySIi'm more java expert than linux admin07:09
wolfeySIbut.. what can i do07:09

ivoksyou should buy support for linux then :D07:10
ivoksand since you live very near me, i would be happy to sell it some support contracts :D07:11

ivoksdistribution's apache is something else07:21
ivoksyou will host web sites with apache from distribution07:21
lafumaokay07:22
ivoksapache in ispconfig is only for administration of ispconfig, webmail, and stuff like that07:22
lafumagot it07:23
