zetheroowonderful15:13
Ximalwell slart : it rocks .. thanks guys for the chkrootkit and rkhunter .. they're nice15:48
CreationistAlienX_: I installed the official drivers, remember?  nvidia-xconfig now just makes use of those instead... then I can't start X at all.15:48
TheRepackerCreationist: right, becareful, the system tries to install the 100.14.19 driver, it has a know regressive bug on 6XXX and 7XXX cards15:49
Ximalany antivirus progs anyone knows about ?15:49
AlienX_Ximal: read what people responded to you earlier...15:50
tech0007can i encrypt my hard drive even though i did an upgrade not a clean install?15:50
CreationistAlienX_: Alright, well I install nvidia-glx and ran nvidia-xconfig.  Gonna restart X and see how it goes.15:50
Ximalanyone have sophos ? antivirus page ? url ?15:50
AlienX_Ximal: i've used sophos but I don't run AV on any of my linux boxes15:50
CreationistOkay, that killed my X server too.15:51
AlienX_Creationist: is there a specific error that the xserver is throwing out?15:51
Ximalwhy not alienx_15:51
CreationistYeah, hang on... lemme check real quick.15:52
TheRepackerCreationist: it is probably saying glx was not loaded15:52
AlienX_Ximal: no reason to. I periodically check for rootkits but beyond that, I've never had any reason to run an AV app15:52
Ximaland why don't you do /msg nickserv ghost alienx password15:52
Ximaloh.. I'm just doing it because I don't wanna take the chance ..15:52
AlienX_Ximal: because alienx is my box at home15:52
SlartI'm having some trouble starting gnome on my newly upgraded ubuntu box.. seems the failsafe xorg.conf doesn't work with my nvidia 8800.. known problem? workarounds?15:52
CreationistTheRepacker: Yeah, I remember it was something like that.15:53
tech0007 can i encrypt my hard drive even though i did an upgrade not a clean install?15:53
AlienX_Ximal: you're likely not to get any kind of virus unless you're being incredibly careless15:53
Ximalaye alien ..15:53
XimalI'm just trying to be safe..15:53
Ximalbut you are right..15:53
TheRepackerCreationist: I had to re-install the kernels15:53
Ximali guess the clamshell one on add remove is ok15:53
AlienX_Slart: you can run the nvidia-glx-new package IIRC15:54
pro_!upgrade15:54
ubotuFor upgrading, see the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes - Please join #ubuntu+1 for questions about upgrading to Gutsy, and use #ubuntu for "normal" support only15:54
CreationistTheRepacker: Well, I just reinstalled Kubuntu.  I'd hate to have to do it again... although I have ALWAYS had issues with video drivers in Linux.15:54
SlartAlienX_ : same result.. x doesn't start..  just blinks a few times15:54
AlienX_Creationist: i can't see why you'd need to reinstall15:55
AlienX_Slart: what error are you getting?15:55
SlartAlienX_, and the xorg log seems to indicate that x tries to use the xorg.conf.failsafe configuration file15:55
TheRepackerCreationist: me too!, I had a heck of a time getting this to work, I can not remeber everything I did15:55
SlartAlienX_, hang on.. I'll check again..15:55
TheRepackerand I'm in gnome15:56
CreationistAlienX_: Reason to reinstall: I'm dumb and can't fix this on my own :)15:56
AlienX_Slart: i can't  figure out why it'd try to use failsafe unless you're booting into failsafe15:56
CreationistI don't suppose someone would want to ssh into me and fix it for me, would they?15:56
mcquaidhello, I installed rc1 for a friend who already had xp installed using the desktop cd.  His entire drive was ntfs which I resized with the installer and proceeded to install ubuntu15:56
SlartAlienX_, nope.. booting just the same as always.. I'll check grub so nothing has changed there15:57
AlienX_Creationist: i think there might be an nvidia channel on here....i know there is a nvidia linux forum that might be able to help as well. You may want to check the ubuntu forum first though15:57
mcquaidand everything went fine, but when I booted ubuntu for the first time and I needed to check something in gparted, I was surprised to see that gparted by default did not have any ntfs support besides detect15:57
SlartAlienX_, the error is "(EE) No devices detected" and before that "(WW) VESA: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:5:0:0) found"15:58
mcquaidi noticed this as he wanted to do some further partitioning on another drive and wanted me to make it half ntfs/ext3 but gparted reported detect only15:58
mcquaidi installed ntfs-progs and then gparted reported i could do anything regarding ntfs15:58
AlienX_Slart: which driver is xorg trying to use? in your xorg.conf15:58
mcquaidso my question is, how was it able to resize his existing ntfs partition with the live cd?15:59
CreationistOkay, since I'm stuck with a CLI, is there an alternative to using vi? lol15:59
mcquaidor does the live cd have ntfs-progs on it?15:59
SlartAlienX_, my xorg.conf is using the nvidia driver (nvidia), but the xorg.conf.failsafe is using some vesa stuff15:59
Ximalmcquaid : live cd  has gparted a partitioning tool15:59
Creationist...something useable for an old DOS junkie like me?15:59
mcquaid...15:59
mcquaiddid you read what I said Ximal?15:59
Ximalmcquaid : ntfs partitions can be viewed by gparted ..16:00
AlienX_Slart: out of curiosity, what would happen if you renamed the the failsafe config and copied your current xorg.conf to xorg.conf.failsafe16:00
mcquaidof course the live cd has gparted.  My point was once i first booted and installed gparted, the only support for ntfs was view16:00
nosrednaekimCreationist: nano16:00
Slartehh.. ok.. grub had changed.., I was using an old kernel.. I guess gutsy changed some things16:00
TheRepackerfailsafe was a good idea.....but......16:00
centyxTheRepacker: thanks16:00
mcquaidbut yet I resized his existing ntfs with the live cd to make room for the install16:00
AlienX_mcquaid: write support  for NTFS is hit and miss at best16:00
Ximalhmm unsure ... it is like a realtime fdisk program the best way i can put it to you if u r used to windows16:00
Ximal:)16:00
centyxTheRepacker: i tried in gnome, same thing. disabled effects, disabled xgl, etc. it's locking up during other activities as well.16:01
TheRepackercentyx: working?16:01
nosrednaekimmcquaid: are you dual booting vista?16:01
Ximalmcquaid gimme a moment16:01
centyxTheRepacker: nah, still locking up16:01
SlartAlienX_, hmm.. I'll give it a try..16:01
Ximali'll have something for you16:01
mcquaidhmm... write support is just fine with ntfs-3g AlienX16:01
mcquaidbut i'm not talking about read/write ntfs, I'm talking about resizing an existing partition with the live cd, which seemed to go fine16:01
AlienX_Slart: if worst comes to worst, you could try reverting to your previous kernel (unless this was a fresh install)16:01
TheRepackercentyx: try the OO forums16:02
centyxTheRepacker: will do16:02
Ximalmcquaid : www.mrbass.org and http://mrbass.org/ubcd/ are my best ways of showing you programs you can use for partitioning16:02
mcquaidi was just surprised that once booted, gparted only had ntfs detect support.  So I was kind of scratching my head thinking well how did I just resize then?16:02
billybongoany idea where my gnome Applications menu has got to - what generates that?16:02
Ximalthe ultimate boot cd is a great resource and supports ntfs on some of it's things.. the ubcd is a sortof linux live boot disk that contains hardware programs in text only16:02
mcquaidwell, i'm not really asking that but thanks, gparted is just fine once all the extras are all installed16:03
mcquaidnosrednaekim, i was going to install ubuntu rc for another friend today who does have vista16:03
philip_the day before release and we're still getting updates? interesting16:03
Ximalwell..16:04
SlartAlienX_, booting from the correct kernel didn't help.. I'm trying the renaming thing16:04
mcquaidit's always gone fine with xp, are there any hiccups I should be aware of when trying to dual boot vista/ubuntu on the same drive?16:04
Ximalevery moment counts philip_16:04
nosrednaekimmcquaid: not sure how well gutsy resizes vista partitions... you may want to do it from within vista.16:04
Ximalhmm yeah16:04
AlienX_Slart: alright. I'm not convinced that'll work but it's worth a shot16:04
philip_Ximal, feisty RC turned out to be the final release...no updates for like a week16:04
SlartAlienX_, hey.. here's another error gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X Error - Restarting :016:04
mcquaidhmm, well i did it with gutsy live cd and everything 'seemed' to go fine16:04
Ximalmcquaid : download a torrent of fossi partition magic ..16:04
Ximaland install it to vista if u don't have a partition program to use16:05
Ximalfossi's old partition program used to work well for me on xp .. should on vista16:05
AlienX_Ximal: gparted should work fine16:05
mcquaidthx for the suggestion, it's always good to know of other part tools16:05
nosrednaekimmcquaid: ah..ok..good then16:05
AlienX_Slart: hmm16:05
Ximalalienx_ not if he uses vista to do the partitioning16:05
mcquaidbut again, I resized with gutsy live cd and it just through me off that it didtn't actually have resize support in gparted once installed16:05
Ximalbut like i said mcquaid http://mrbass.org/ubcd/ has a boot cd that will overide all you need to do for your partitioning tools16:06
mcquaidi was like 'well, how the heck did i just do it during install?!'16:06
AlienX_Ximal: oh, i don't know anything about vista16:06
mcquaidthat's all i was asking16:06
Ximalit's ok bro16:06
* AlienX_ hasn't used windows on a desktop in over 5 years16:06
aguitelhow start compiz in gutsy?16:06
AlienX_aguitel: go to run and type "compiz --replace"16:07
philip_Alt F2, compiz --replace16:07
mcquaidAlienX, how does one switch back to gnome's window manager if they choose to?16:07
aguiteleverytime you need to doing this?16:07
mcquaidcompiz really needs a gui config to fall back to kwin/gnome window manager if need be16:07
nosrednaekimmcquaid: "metacity --replace"16:08
mcquaidah16:08
philip_aguitel, add it to your "sessions" in Preferences16:08
mcquaidthx16:08
mc44aguitel: no you can set it up in System -> Preferences -> Apperance16:08
nosrednaekimmcquaid: or for kwin..."kwin --replace"16:08
mc44philip_: much easier to use the proper gui :)16:08
Ximalalienx_ : I use virtual machine to run windows for all my dvd ripping needs etc and for programs that aren't in a stable release right now in linux :) though I find that wine works well for most of my gaming needs ;)16:08
philip_mc44, ah didn't know that existed, learned something new :)16:08
AlienX_Ximal: i use xp in a vm but I only really use it for running virtual center or oding AD stuff16:09
AlienX_s/oding/doing16:09
Ximalalienx_ furthermore i keep a windows partition just to keep things bootable for chat purposes etc for support through this channel here on irc in case i have an issue as i don't have a livecd with irc16:09
Ximalad stuff ?16:09
Ximalcoding ?16:09
mcquaidanyone here successfully dualbooted vista/ubuntu?  I don't expect any issues, but I know jack about vista and thought there might be some weird boot sector crap or something16:09
AlienX_Ximal: active directory16:09
Ximaloh ok alien16:09
Ximalmcquaid : you can set it to be in the bootlist for ubuntu ..16:09
Ximaljust like any other linux distro worth it's salt16:10
mcquaidgoing to install it today for a friend who currently has vista and would like to avoid any hiccups16:10
nosrednaekimmcquaid: I THINK all the issues are sorted out with gutsy...16:10
Ximalit uses a grubb loader i believe16:10

DMLouMy Feisty multihead config/xorg.conf (separate desktops on each display) doesn't seem to work on Gutsy unless I use a hack to use Feisty's xserver.  I had read that Gutsy uses xrandr now, but is it possible to have such a setup with xrandr?19:10
TheRepackerBluesKaj: the mirror for gusty are closed waiting for sync19:10
BluesKajI was curious since our friend responsible for canonical resides in the UK :)19:11

SlartHello, I'm running 64-bit ubuntu gutsy gibbon on an AMD64x2 6GHz with a Nvidia 8800 GTX.. I've just upgraded and glxgears feels awfully slow.. I know glxgears isn't a benchmark and all that but I get about 5000 FPS and I kind of recall getting at least 3 times that with the old ubuntu edgy.. anything in particular to check?19:25
TheRepackerI have them because everyone was throwing them out to get LCDs19:26
Lars_Gok since people don't want to know gutsy exists until tomorrow....19:26
DMLouTheRepacker: Cool. Unfortunately, I'm stuck using a mobility radeon 7500.  I'm trying to get dual head working between my laptop and my external LCD19:26

DMLouat least w/ regards to my multihead setup19:27
Lars_GAny idea where the config for the default mounting or not mounting (which has changed) to non mount by default in 7.10 lies? in kde?19:27
TheRepackerDMLou: sorry, but getting the nvidia set up was headache enough19:27
newsense07BluesKaj: i cant believe someone threw out this p42.6Ghz Ht im on now19:27
Lars_GI basically want to re-set it to automount removable media19:27
ian1Nautilus in Gutsy is using my home directory as my desktop.  might be related to the fact that the first time I booted I didn't have the Desktop folder available, but now it is-- any ideas how to fix that?19:27
DMLouTheRepacker: I hear ya...  Ironically, I got everything working just fine if I used ATI's proprietary drivers.  Unfortunately, they don't work with suspend/hibernate/etc.19:28
TheRepackerDMLou: that is also a problem with some nvidia cards and certian drivers19:28
BluesKajnewsense07:  threw out a p4 2.6ghz ? wow ,must be an extreme gamer gone mad :)19:29
DMLouTheRepacker: yeah, I think I heard about that too.  Actually, this is my work machine, so I don't care about fancy whiz bang 3d effects.  I just want an efficient coding setup. :)19:29

Gek_BluesKaj, i don't know... aptitude search gstream extra plugins doesn't have that19:32
DMLousoul9|9: under both Feisty and my old NVidia-based desktop (running Fedora, though), getting dual screen working wasn't hard19:32
soul9|9yeah?19:32
soul9|9well I've been trying to get it working here for about as long as I've had this stupid laptop and i haven't been able to19:32
DMLouWell, I had to hack up my xorg for Feisty... but under Fedora, their screens control panel just worked19:33
soul9|9first off: the internal screen is 1440x90019:33
Gek_BluesKaj, "Couldn't find package "Gstreamer-extraplugins"19:33
DMLousoul9|9: what kind of hardware are you running?19:33
BluesKajGek_: check synaptic or adept19:33
soul9|9and the external screen is 1024x76819:33
DMLouas in what graphics card, etc.19:33
soul9|9and the stupid fucking X guys (sorry) didn't think anyone would want a dual-screen setup with different resolution/layout19:34
soul9|9intel video card19:34
Seeker`soul9|9: watch your langugae please19:34
PriceChildsoul9|9, saying sorry doesn't excuse you whatsoever.19:34
soul9|9okay, so i don't know who's fault is19:35
Gek_What am I looking for in synaptic?  I'm in multimedia... but don't se anything related to gstreamer19:35
DMLousoul9|9: what kind of setup do you want?  One big ass spanning desktop, or multiple separate desktops?19:35
soul9|9yes19:35
soul9|9I don't care19:35
DMLouI came across this page while trying to get my ati card to work.  It's written by the intel driver folks, so it may help you if you haven't seen it yet: http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html19:35
soul9|9but a "big-desktop" setup would be the ideal19:35
DMLou"big-desktop" seems to be the more popular.  Multi-desktop (like mine) seems to be going the way of the dodo :(19:36
BluesKajGek_: in the search bar type 'gstreamer'19:36

soul9|9yeah, I want to be able to drag windows from one to another19:37
Lars_GAny idea where the config for the default mounting or not mounting (which has changed) to non mount by default in 7.10 lies? in kde? I want to set 7.10 to automount19:37
DMLousoul9|9: then hopefully that page will work.  it seems geared towards that setup19:37
Gek_Which search bar?  The Deskbar Applet?19:37
soul9|9yes, that page doesn't help me at all19:37
soul9|9that is why I said intel sucks19:37
soul9|9I don't know if it's an intel limitation or an X one, but19:38
=== dennda is now known as ChristopherDente
DMLouI would assume it's probably an X one or an X bug, since everything I've heard indicated that Intel's got some of the best X drivers out there19:38
soul9|9getting this setup to work with two different type of monitors (1440x900+1024x768) is too much to ask19:39
Gek_fuck19:39
Seeker`Gek_: watch your langugae please19:40
DMLousoul9|9: take a peek at this one.  It's for thinkpads, but they do cover intel cards on it: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.219:40
DMLouI wish I could help more, but I don't have an intel card to muck around with19:40
DMLouhell, I need help with my ati card :)19:40
soul9|9oh, and with intel dri is limited to 2048, so i guess the guy who designed the thing thought people inly needed max 1024horizontal pixels, no more per monitor19:40
=== ChristopherDente is now known as dennda
BluesKajGek_:  in synaptic choose "All" then click on the the little magnifying glass icon 'searcj' and type in "gstreamer"19:40

=== dennda is now known as ChristopherDente
soul9|9that is, and they know about it19:41

Gek_I don't see anything listed as anything "extra" for gstreamer19:41
mon^rchlol I can't join #ubuntu+219:41
soul9|9what I don't know is that it should work even without dri, but I get a display with huge black lines on top and bottom19:41

lee986321The program 'update-manager' is currently not installed. I found this in the kubuntu when I wanted to check to see if it could be one, any ideas on why it wasleft out?19:43
soul9|9I guess it is hard to imagine how it should work with this setup19:43
soul9|9but I mean, it isn't that hard to clip off the bottom of the screen in this case19:44

lee986321so kunbuntu isn't genome?20:31
Pete_^Arenlor: are you looking for "/usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh" ?20:31
Ben_Csgnomefreak: here's my sshd_config file:   http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/40963/20:31
gnomefreaknibsa1242b: most likely it came from sourceforge repo. but you can tell by using apt-cache madison packagename20:32
Ben_Csgnomefreak: don't know what key i had. never played with one20:32
gnomefreakBen_Cs: why is it not in ~/.ssh20:32
bur[n]erBen_Cs: any other machines on your network that you can use to test?  can they ssh in via 10.0.0.whatever20:32
ArenlorPete_^ yes that's where it is, thanks, and gnomefreak that's what they need to run in the terminal to get libdvdcss220:32
Crozarlee986321: with a normal UbuntU is Gnome right with Xscript , but  you can get KDE to work as read  only , but with Kubuntu you will get wide range of  functionality that makes write also that means with gnome i can configure hardware and go to deep inside but as for me in ubuntu when switching sessions to kde i cant do this , with Kubuntu You can thats the only diffrence it gives it for the newbies20:32
bur[n]erBen_Cs: maybe gnomefreak is on to something and it's yoru client that is hosed, not the server side20:32
Ben_Csbur[n]er: tried from winxp with putty. same result20:32
nibsa1242bgnomefreak: ok... I thought the sourceforge repo was disabled (commented out)20:32
Crozarlee986321: i think what i do is do allthe needs and wants first in Gnome then switch to KDE and smile :)20:32
gnomefreakArenlor: not anymore it stopped working on feisty afaik20:33
Crozargnomefreak: wat is better dock app , Kiba-Dock or KxDock20:33
Arenlorgnomefreak that's how I installed it both on feisty and on gutsy20:33
bur[n]erCrozar: awn20:33
gnomefreakCrozar: whatever one you like best is the better one20:33
Crozargnomefreak: off course people wants the stabled and faster and the best :D even for slow rams like me :(...20:34
Ben_Csbur[n]er: with putty it opens the console and it's stuck20:34
gnomefreakArenlor: that script was failing thats why its no longer on the wikis and they point to seveas repo or mediubuntu repos20:34
Crozargnomefreak: i just want to know who gives more support and thinking of future :P  whos seriouse like OpenOffice20:35
gnomefreakCrozar: what? OO.o has nothing to do with dock apps20:35
Arenlorgnomefreak I installed it yesterday, version 1.2.5-120:35
Crozargnomefreak: im on 256 ram is it worth it>20:36
Crozargnomefreak: my pc is on 1gig :)20:36
gnomefreakArenlor: an old version as well :)20:36
Crozarimonlaptop20:36
gnomefreakCrozar: 256 ram most runs fine on it20:36
Arenlorgnomefreak well it works and that's what I was shooting for lol20:36
Crozarso kiba dock it is?20:36
Ben_Cswell thanks. never mind20:36
Crozargnomefreak: sudo apt-get kiba-dock ?20:36

Crozarthats a Pc  gnomefreak and my ram of this laptop was theyr since year 2000 lo20:37

gnomefreakpc == personal computer it can be a laptop or a desktop20:38
bardyrkiba-dock works fine??20:38
Crozargnomefreak: tell me a dock app i can get from repo or just tell me something i can find which gives me steps to install20:38
bardyrjust compiled the svn version today and it works20:38
gnomefreaknibsa1242b: if it doesnt give a repo than you got it from somewhere else20:38
CrozarMAC?20:38
gnomefreakbardyr: did they fix it?20:38
Estethi'm preparing for the gutsy upgrade. Shound i uninstall ntfs-3g and compiz fusion, since they'll be in gutsy?20:38
bardyrpc20:38
gnomefreakCrozar: kxdock20:38
nibsa1242bgnomefreak: ok... is it safe to remove -15 & -16 from my system?20:38
bardyrgnomefreak, donno, first time using it never found any bugs20:39
gnomefreaknibsa1242b: since they dont exist i would say yes20:39
nibsa1242bgnomefreak: thanks for all your help20:39
Crozari was thinking of buying gnomefreak but im waiting to hear news from bootcamp if it can work around ubuntu and do multi boot then its worth it to get a slick looking laptop who has the hardware capabilities for ubuntu windows and mac :D20:39
gnomefreakbardyr: i spent 6 months trying to work out bugs in it20:39
Crozargnomefreak: to install kxdock is  sudo apt-get install kxdock ?20:39
gareth_I'm having a problem in Gutsy where my wireless adapter/connection stops working if I don't use it for a few minutes. It needs a reboot to recover. What should I be looking at?20:40
=== MTecknology_ is now known as MTecknology
gnomefreakCrozar: if you are not here for support reason please join #ubuntu-offtopic since everything that you are saying makes little to no sense or has nothing to do with docvk apps20:40
gnomefreakCrozar: use synaptic20:40
Crozartankx20:40
lee986321eh tis maybe off topic but, Ijust seen the weather report and there calling for tornados in eastern OR? and some other areas?20:40
gnomefreakCrozar: its kxdocker iirc20:40
gnomefreaklee986321: #ubuntu-offtopic20:41
andaxgareth_, just put a little script in the crontab that will send out packets every minute or so.20:41
nibsa1242bgnomefreak: I have a slight suspicion that the -15 & -16 are some how tied into kqemu, as I have kqemu-modules-2.6.20-15 * -16 but no package for -14.20:41
gareth_andax: I'd rather find and file a bug than work around it. Currently I'm leaving xchat open and that keeps the connection alive but there's an underlying issue to solve.20:41
lee986321grr I hate this browser nevr mind that was an oops20:42
gnomefreaknibsa1242b: that might be (so once again you didnt get those kernel from gutsy install)20:42
robinsonhaving an issue with alsa in Gutsy on my compaq v5204nr. The master volume channel does nothing. I have filed a bug report, but wonder if there is a workaround20:42
andaxgareth_, of course you should check the driver's source and see what's happening if you can and create a patch. I though you just need a quick fix.20:42
nibsa1242bgnomefreak: yep, I see that. Again, thanks for your help.20:42
robinsoni need a way to map my laptop volume control buttons to the pcm channel instead of the master channel. any ideas?20:43
mcquaidis there anywhere that shows how many pkgs went through a revision since the rc?20:43
mcquaidi was going to upgrade via an alternate cd and save time downloading, but if a lot of it changed I might as well wait20:43
gareth_andax: sure, no worries! One thing I was wondering was is there a command line to bring up and down the wireless connection? The icon on the top bar becomes frozen when this problem hits.20:43
LaibschAnybody using apt-proxy around here?  I am seeing much slower speeds than a direct connection when it really should be faster.  My downstream is about 6MBit, 100MBit LAN.  Download rarely exceeds one 1Mbit where a direct connection fetches at full 6 MBit.  Any ideas?20:44
gareth_I'm used to "/sbin/ifup eth0", this whole Gnome thing is pretty alien to me <g>20:44
Estethgareth_: I think "sudo ifconfig ra0 up" will bring up a network connection, where ra0 is the connection20:45
Crozargnomefreak: ~!!!!  i did sudo aptitude ..... and then i get this The following packages are unused and will be REMOVED:20:45
Crozar  libntfs-3g5 libportaudio2 linux-headers-2.6.22-1220:45
Crozar  linux-headers-2.6.22-12-generic20:45
andaxgareth_, ifup and ifdown should bring up/down the device. or you can try /etc/init.d/networking stop / start maybe20:45
Crozargnomefreak:  i did install  kxdocker20:45
gnomefreakCrozar: i didnt tell you to use aptitude20:45
Crozarbut it says goign to remove stuff :/20:45
Crozardo i press No?20:45
mcquaidyes i use /etc/init.d/networking ...20:45
bardyrrobinson, right click on the gnome mixer and select preferences20:45
gnomefreakCrozar: and that is expected results when using aptitude20:45
Crozarmaybe i need those files20:45
Estethshould i uninstall ntfs3g and compiz before upgrading to gutsy?20:45
gnomefreakCrozar: i suggest you stick with what you know20:45
Crozari dont understand what aptitude is :(20:45
gnomefreakor the suggested synaptic20:46
Crozargnomefreak: i thought its a faster way rather then going to synaptic and search20:46
gnomefreakCrozar: than dont use it20:46
gnomefreakno20:46
gareth_andax:  i think it's a device problem rather than in the whole networking subsystem. I need to dig into that control on the top bar to see what it's doing and why it's freezing up.20:46
nibsa1242bLaibsch: I'm not using it, but I've been thinking about using it do you like it?20:46
gnomefreakCrozar: use apt-get than20:46
Crozar:D20:46
andaxEsteth, if you have installed them from packages you will have no problem upgrading.  If you have compiled from source i suggest to uninstall them.20:46
robinsonbardyr: using Kubuntu, sorry. I have the graphical mixer workign right, just need to remap the volume buttons20:46
gnomefreakCrozar: aptitude can be destructive if you fail to know wha tyou are doing.20:46
Crozarcouldnt find package !20:47
gnomefreakCrozar: read docs and play with it before using it20:47
Crozarwhy destructive ?20:47
robinsoni think they are set using xmodmap's XF86AudioRaiseVolume, which affects the master channel20:47
gnomefreakCrozar: synaptic can find package20:47
robinsonI need to find out how to change this so the PCM channel is affected20:47
Estethandax: they're installed from packages, allthough CF comes from a ppa.20:47
Laibschnibsa1242b: It is nice and saves bandwidth.  But if it slows me down that much I'll dump apt-proxy.  Up until now I had 1 Mbit downstream so I hardly noticed it.  Now I have 6 MBit and I want the speed.20:47
gnomefreakCrozar: notice it removes packages automaticly20:47
Crozardamnit cant i become a pro in 1 day20:47

EstethSLart: Remove trackerd from sessions, i'd think20:58
gnomefreakLaser87: 8.04 will be hardy heron20:58
EstethSlart: But if you're using ext3, the indexer is practically free in terms of performance20:58
gnomefreakLaser87: if you dont need support for gutsy gibbon (7.10) than all other questions should be asked in #ubuntu-offtopic. if support for 6.06>7.04 ask in #uubntu20:59
Laser87gnomefreak: I know - but in German forums we discussed names a few weeks ago and a lot liked Horny Hibbo - just a joke20:59

Gek_Yes21:51
SlartBen_Cs: with 64-bit you'll get that small increase in power.. but you also have a lot of stuff that needs all kinds of voodoo to work.. (flash, java etc).. 32-bit is a bit more polished21:52

Arenlorxenol compiz is simple to get running, you just go to terminal and run apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager then go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects and turn it on, XGL runs by default, and if that doesn't work you can go to System > Administration > Restricted Drivers Manager and see if you may need to turn it on22:03

Arenlorkolby lol I just calculated based on the time and that 00 days left still allows for 23 hours 59 mins and 59 seconds that in the last time zone they have that long23:19
kolbyArenlor: oh...23:19
kolbyArenlor: I still hope it's on time ^^23:20
Arenlorepisodic uninstall compiz and emerald if you have it installed, disable any third party repos and then reinstall it all23:20
Arenlorkolby me too, and they have plenty of time to do it with too is the thing23:20
episodicI didn't mess with emeald23:20
episodicI'll try23:20
Flare183So I just have to upgrade using the same way you do the beta (kubuntu interface)23:20
Flare183?23:20
dorkfaceGutsy seems to not cooperate with sound.  Other than messing with the volume controls, what should be the first step in troubleshooting sound problems?23:20
Slartdorkface: it worked in feisty?23:21
dorkfaceyeah23:21
Aishikonvm got an answer.23:21
Truman1Apparently pidgin is prone to freezing too :\ .. has anyone had a similar experience with the top and bottom bars disappearing in gutsy?23:21
Slartdorkface: hmm.. and gutsy hasn't reset some kind of volume control? checked that your soundcard is listed in /proc/asound/cards ?23:21
ArenlorTruman1 yes but that was fixed with an update and I've never had pidgin freeze on me in the entire time I've been using it, which is since Feisty and now in Gutsy23:22
kevinOpidgin has been quite reliable for me as well23:22
Truman1Arenlor: Pidgin isn't my biggest problem right now .. it seems to work fine when gutsy is behaving23:22
ArenlorTruman1 are you using compiz?23:23
Truman1I think it has to do with my other problem -- when I boot, both my top applications-n-stuff bar and my bottom what's-open-n-stuff disappear23:23
dorkfaceSlart: it says the command is not found, and it isn't a directory, but "card0" is23:23
Truman1yes, but they still don't come back if I go back to plain ol' gnome23:23
ArenlorTruman1 did you have compiz before you upgraded to Gutsy?23:24
Slartdorkface: oh.. it's not a command.. it's a file.. kind of ... try "cat /proc/asound/cards"23:24
Truman1Arenlor: Yeah23:24
ArenlorTruman1 uninstall it get rid of the thirdparty repo you installed it from and reinstall it, Gutsy comes with a working version23:24
dorkfaceSlart: seems like it recognizes it23:25
Truman1Arenlor: Alright, worth a shot -- thanks23:25
dorkfaceSlart: It has a irq and a DMA address on it23:25
dorkfacebah, redundancy :\23:25
episodicuninstalling and reinstalling was a no go - still flipping pancakes23:26
Slartdorkface: hmm.. so alsa knows about the card.. no sounds at all are playing? you've checked the volume controls? no intro sound?23:26
Slartdorkface: what kind of soundcard is it?23:26
dorkfaceSlart: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)23:27
Arenlorepisodic do you have the workspace switcher applet on your panel?23:27
Slartdorkface: did you have to do anything special to get it to work under feisty?23:28
dorkfacewell, this is a dell laptop that came with fiesty23:28
Slartdorkface: preinstalled?23:28
dorkfaceSlart: probably not, I had to set the language, partitions, etc.  But I don't remember doing anything special.23:29
Truman1Arenlor: I went ahead and removed all of compiz & restarted X, but I still don't have bars23:29
ArenlorTruman1 do you have them set to auto-hide?23:30
Truman1Arenlor: Nope, and if I move my mouse around the top and bottom of the screen, they don't pop up or anything23:30
ArenlorTruman1 run a terminal and in it just type "gnome-panel" and see what happens23:31
Truman1already running23:31
Slartdorkface: tried googling for the chip model + ubuntu? see if there are any HOWTO's out there?23:31
Truman1Arenlor: erm, already running23:31
episodicYes I have the workspace switcher23:32
episodicapplet23:32
episodicis that a problem?23:32
Truman1Arenlor: Aha!  They come back if I kill it and restart them23:32
ArenlorTruman1 ok try this, restart X and then make sure to choose GNOME not any xgl script sessions23:32
Truman1alright23:32
Arenlorepisodic how many workspaces are shown23:33
episodicwhen I'm in rotate cube/actions/general/initiate/it says disabled when I click on it it says new accelerator23:33
episodicarenlor - 4 spaces23:33
Truman1Arenlor: Now when I've restarted X, they come back just fine23:33
dorkfaceSlart: Does it matter that I didn't dist-ugrade?  I wanted a clean start and used a gutsy iso of kubuntu that I burned to a cd.23:33
pwnt-how do I update my repos for sympatic & apt-get to the new ones?23:34
ArenlorTruman1 make sure not to sue an xgl script session, it warns it could make your system FUBAR if you do23:34
Slartdorkface: nah... I don't think it would have made a big difference.. the upgrade messed up my audio settings so I don't think you would have gotten away easier23:34
Arenlorpwnt- did you upgrade already?23:34
pwnt-Arenlor: upgrade to what?23:34
dorkfaceSlart: ah, ok23:35
Truman1Arenlor: I don't even know what that is so I don't think I am, unless that's some part of compiz23:35
Arenlorpwnt- gutsy23:35
pwnt-Arenlor: yeah long ago I did. the gutsy beta that is.23:35
Arenlorpwnt- then just run apt-get update23:35
Arenloror click refresh on synaptic23:36
pwnt-Arenlor: but today there was no updates for me. I think something wrong especialy that gutsy is releasing final tomorrow. I was thinking today would be a huge massive updates of everything.. but didn't happen23:36
Arenlorpwnt- everyone is worried about that, but no, no updates at all for over a day for anyone23:36
pwnt-Arenlor: does apt-get update comes first? or apt-get upgrade?23:36
Dr_willisa Huge update the day befor - is a scary idea23:36
Arenlorapt-get update comes first and they suggest instead of upgrade you use dist-upgrade23:36
pwnt-Arenlor: why tho?23:37
K_DallasHi guys! I was going to install ubuntu last week but was told wait untill tomorrow as the gusty final release will be released. Has the schedule changed or I can expect to be able to dowload it tomorrow, thanks23:37
Arenlorepisodic when you log in do you use an xlg script for your session or do you use GNOME?23:37
pwnt-Arenlor: so its "sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get upgrade" Like that?23:37
episodicgdm23:37
Arenloryes pwnt-23:37
slackernsudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade23:37
riotkittieK_Dallas: it will be released sometime on the 18th23:37
K_Dallasriotkittie, excellent, thank you23:37
ArenlorK_Dallas it'll be up within 36 and a half hours23:38
K_DallasArenlor, good. i am going to install it on the weekened anyways but i could start downloading before that, hopefully23:38
Arenlorepisodic on the workspace switcher applet you said it had 4 workspaces right?23:39
episodicyea23:39
Arenlorall 4 horizontal right?23:39
episodicyep23:39
Bauldrickwhy is openoffice starting up as ubuntu when im on kubuntu?23:39
Arenlorok try this, turn on the Desktop Wall instead and see if all 4 are used by that23:39
episodicok23:39
episodicyea the wall works perfect23:41
episodicwith and without a window going from desktop to desktop23:41
Arenlorall 4 of them?23:41
episodicyes23:41
Arenlorenable ONLY the cube now23:41
episodicok23:41
Arenlornot the rotate cube23:41
Arenlorand then use the workspace switcher to switch between all four23:42
episodicok when I enabled the cube23:42
episodicthe wall disabled23:42
Dr_willisBauldrick,  you might want to clarify that a bit. It made no sence to me.23:42
episodicnow the workspace switcher applet23:42
episodicdoes not work at all23:42
Arenlorgood23:42
Arenlorthat's what I was looking for23:42
Arenlornow enable the Rotate Cube23:42
episodicok23:43
Arenlorand then switch using the switcher for all four23:43
episodicyou mean select other desktops?23:43
Arenloryes23:43
episodicback to same ole pancake flippin23:43
BauldrickOpenoffice should start with a blue splash screen in Kubuntu? I'm getting a yellow splash screen with the Ubuntu logo - im on kubuntu gutsy very latest23:44
Arenlorok go to each desktop and open something on each one that is unique and try switching between them23:44
episodicok done23:44
Dr_willisBauldrick,  you are worried about the splash artwork? :) cant say that i ever even noticed it. I tend to install ubuntu + kubuntu desktop.  I imagine the OO pakcage maintainer just used the Ubuntu artwork.23:45
episodicsame thing23:45
administratoranyone can tell me if gutsy will have an auto program to install hardware23:45
administratorthat is drivers from the manufacturer?23:45
Dr_willisi just see a brown Openoffice splash real fast..golly that loaded fast.23:45
MurielGodoiIn my feisty I have some problem to suspend/resume when compiz is enabled. Anyone knows if that was fixed in Gusty?23:45
Bauldrickhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyGibbon/Beta/Kubuntu?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=ooo.png23:46
Bauldrickno im not worried atall23:46
Arenlorepisodic minimize all the windows, go into the cube settings and go to the transparent cube tab and turn down the Opacity When not Rotating23:46
Arenlortell me if you see a cube design there23:46
episodicdone23:47
Arenlordoes it look like a cube?23:47
episodicno cube23:47
episodicjust makes the windows solid black23:48
episodicwhen I bring the opacity back up23:48
episodicmy wallpaper comes back23:48
slackernBauldrick: maybe you need to install the package  openoffice.org-kde              - KDE Integration for OpenOffice.org23:49
Arenloryes the wallpaper goes away, that's the opacity thing, umm open a small window on each desktop then turn it down again and you should be able to see them as black shapes on a cube23:49
administratorwhy dont they release beta files for gutsy?23:50
episodicnothing that even resembles a cube23:51
episodicjust black23:51
Dr_willisThe restricted-manager tool works very well for me Under Gutsy23:52
Arenlorah ok episodic I forgot, turn on the skydome while doing thing23:52
