schlumpf-hi how do i kill a zombie prozess which does not show up under top10:44
predaeusschlumpf-, does it show up with "ps -e"?10:47
schlumpf-yes10:47
schlumpf-i used the pit to kill with signal 7 but nothing happend10:48
schlumpf-i thought 7 is the nuklear bomb under the kill signals....10:49
schlumpf-what could i try next i realy dont want to reboot10:50
predaeus15 is SIGTERM, 9 is SIGKILL (which you are refering to)10:52
predaeusyou should always try 15 first10:52
predaeusonly use 9 if it is absolutely necessary10:52
schlumpf-well 15 dident work10:52
predaeussee "man kill"10:52
schlumpf-thx 9 worked10:53
predaeusschlumpf-, the thing is 15 allows some programs to finish important tasks like writing something to disk, 9 just kills them, might get configs messed up or something like that10:54
predaeusthat's why you should always try 15 first and not be lazy :-D10:54

tuxcrafterpredaeus: using the xfce gnome support is costing me 10MB only to be able to use openoffice gtk widgets :-S12:29
tuxcrafterpredaeus: also the gtk widgets of firefox thunderbird and openwriter are buggy, they put the icons to close to the left black menu line of the new gusty theme, do you see it to12:31

dazjorzHi14:06
dazjorzI just closed my laptop lid and when I reopened it, all I had was a black screen with a white cursor14:06
dazjorzI tried getting control back, by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, 'CRT/LCD' button, and SSHing in,  but it didn't help; I had to reboot14:06
dazjorzSomebody in #xfce thought it was a hibernation problem - how do I turn hibernation off ?14:07
sukaehello14:07
[chr0n0s]hello, i tried some commands with xfwm4 --replace (and some options) and now at login xfwm4 won't start14:08
[chr0n0s]so one way to fix this is put xfwm4 --replace in the startup files, or is there a better way14:08
dazjorzAh the bug is already reported, https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/13825614:09
sukaeis there a codec that allows mkv to play in gxine14:11
sukaeI have more than the usual amount of gstreamer video codecs and I've even tried vlc14:12
LeChacalhello i am new to xubuntu but been using ubuntu for a few years and i know how to edit the main menu under ubuntu but how do i do it under xubuntu14:16
TheSheepLeChacal: settings->menu editor14:22
LeChacalyes i saw that but how does it work i dont see anything that is in my menu in this window14:25
TheSheepLeChacal: you should see the logout and help etc.14:26
TheSheepLeChacal: all the programs are included by the system, using that 'include' item, but you can add your own additional items14:27
LeChacalTheSheep: ok so wait this might be my problem then, because under ubuntu there are other programs that are installed  but arent listed and you go to settings->Preferences->main menu and you can add and remove anything from the main menu, so then you are telling me that eveything that is load is in the menu and that i can slim down my menu14:29
LeChacalTheSheep: sorry that should read "I can't slim down my menu"14:31
TheSheepLeChacal: every application you install can come with a .desktop file, that contains a description of its menu entry. These .desktop files are collected together and the menu is utomatically generated from them, so that your menu is always up to date.14:31
TheSheepLeChacal: what do you want to do?14:31
[chr0n0s]can anyone help me with this, the xfwm4 won't start by default, i have to use xfwm4 --replace to start it.. any ideas how to fix this ?14:33
LeChacalTheSheep: i was trying to add some things to menu that i saw in the Appfinder to menu for example i like using the root terminal for something and so i was trying to add that14:33
[chr0n0s]oh... i'll try something14:34
TheSheepLeChacal: you can add items easily14:34
LeChacalTheSheep: but how do i do that is what i am trying to figure out14:35
TheSheepLeChacal: with that menu editor. click the 'add item' button14:35
TheSheepLeChacal: 'add entry', sorry14:35
LeChacalTheSheep:ok thank you that worked, you were saying something about .desktop file, so you can also use that to edit the menu then or is that where the file that the menu editor loads in14:39
TheSheepLeChacal: the .desktop files are in /usr/share/applications/, one per menu entry14:41
TheSheepLeChacal: you can make local copis and edit them in ~/.local/share/applications/14:42
LeChacalok thank you that helps alot14:43
TheSheepLeChacal: this is a standard: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/desktop-entry-spec14:43

TheSheepxt600e: gutsy seems faster than feisty, because it uses a faster gtk theme by default15:19

sleepynatext600e: if you run it in ubuntu, with GNOME as your window manager, it will update to that :)15:22

TheSheepwbadger: dhcp assigns ips to cimputers, but how it does it, depends on its configurtion (on the dhcp server), it may assign the same ip every time15:45
ir4d0mill still give it a try if some1 can direct me on how to do it?15:45
TheSheepir4d0m: I don't know any other anonymizers than tor, but it shouldn't be that hard to install, maybe look on the forums for howto?15:45

garuhhhthesheep: ok thanks! i'll try that out as soon as i get home. am on a winxp now17:48
nikolamgaruhhh: Install Open Arena game and see if it works! :)17:48
garuhhhhmmm... mine is a quite old pc... it won't be good at any advanced game.. :(17:49
garuhhhmy video card is a RIVA TNT2 M64 32mb card, but windowsXP and even ubuntu uses the SIs 300/600... driver..17:50
garuhhhwith the sis driver, windows reports only 16mb videocard memory, but mine is a 32mb.17:53
garuhhhbut after installing the driver provided by the vcard, it shows 32mb. (that's in windowsxp)17:53
garuhhhso i guess making sure that the correct drivers are installed in my xubuntu, i'll get better performance.17:54

tuxcrafterTheSheep: it seems openoffice.org-gtk requires gnome dependencies (LauchGnome=true) to be functional, do we see this as a bug?18:29
TheSheeptuxcrafter: what does it require in particular? I think I'm using it and I have the gnome services disabled...18:31

tuxcrafterand i could not pinpoint the exact dependency18:32

Adriaan_Hey, I heard there are some bad mirrors out there, so can anyone tell me where they got their Alternate 7.10 from?20:00
nikolamwhere are you from20:00
Adriaan_leuven, belgium, europe20:00
nikolami managed to download from france just nicely from Serbia20:01
nikolamSo france is safe bet i think, even when there is huge traffic20:01
Adriaan_free.fr univ-nantes.fr?20:01
nikolamfree.fr i think.. somethink20:02
tuxcrafterhttp://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OpenOffice#Setup20:02
tuxcrafterfound that20:02
tuxcrafterexport OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome20:02
tuxcraftertrying know20:02
Adriaan_it'd be nice if anyone could affirm that the torrent also works20:02
nikolamAdriaan_: Why it wouldnt work?20:02
Adriaan_nikolam: I already had corrupted ISO that turned out to be broken when burned, and someone told me that some mirrors aren 'broken'20:03
nikolamNo. Just download could be broken20:03
nikolamyou can always Repair downloaded .iso with some bit torrent program.20:04
nikolamI repaired 4Gig debian Iso with torrent.20:04

nikolamtuxcrafter: nice :,)20:05
tuxcrafterup to the next issue20:05
nikolamso what/where it needs to fix not to happen again?20:06
rastalgood night20:06
nikolamAdriaan_: Also media could be false. You can always chack .iso integrity with md5sum20:06
nikolamAdriaan_: It is also Ok to first check .iso with md5sum, then while burning CD with K3B check that it is tested upon burning.20:14
Adriaan_nikolam: it is just very weird that all the 7.10isos are corrupted except 1 kubuntu-torrent20:15
nikolamHow do you think corupted?20:15
nikolamis md5sum Ok?20:16
nikolamYou can always check md5sum from main site and re-check .iso you downloaded from other country20:16
Adriaan_nikolam: yes you're right there20:17
nikolamI got .torrent and checked from mininova.org and checked all .iso`s i downloaded from france. Not 200 people seeding could be wrong..20:17
Adriaan_I'm downloading iso (non-torrent) from a french server now20:18
nikolamAdriaan_: Just check md5sum`s and repair those iso`s that fail with torrent.20:18

tuxcrafterTheSheep: do you remember my comments about gnome-pty-helper and vte921:10
TheSheepno21:13
Mark76I found some instructions for editing the xfce menu, but they don't seem to work21:15
Mark76http://xubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/07/12/manually-edit-the-xfce-menu/21:15
Mark76I copied the menu xml file but the ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml does nothing21:17
TheSheepMark76: just edit the .desktop files21:17
TheSheepMark76: xfce 4.6 will have a brand new and functional menu editor21:18
tuxcrafterTheSheep: when xfce4-terminal is opened it will use libvte9 and libvte9 will create an extra process called gnome-pty-helper21:18
tuxcrafterxterm does not do this. I was hoping we can somehow change libvte9 so it will not have to use gnome-pty-helper and making xubuntu a bit lighter21:18
Mark76When is xfce4.6 due?21:18
Mark76Evening Sheep and Tux21:19
tuxcrafterthere is no date planed i believe i always here that it will gome out whan its ready21:19

TheSheepMark76: that's how much memory gnome-pty-helper takes on my system21:21
Mark76Is that good?21:21
TheSheeptuxcrafter: remove init21:22
TheSheeptuxcrafter: this process doesn't really do anything once your terminal is opened21:23
tuxcrafterTheSheep: what will removing init do21:23
TheSheeptuxcrafter: kernel panic21:24
tuxcrafterprecise :-p21:24
TheSheeptuxcrafter: init is the root of all processes in linux21:24
