neur1anyone else trying to use xubuntu with a thinkpad?00:54
crimsunI've used an X41 pretty consistently with several Xubuntu releases00:54
neur1I have an old one and have sound issues (600E)00:55
evil_techthinking about putting it on my T4000:55
crimsunneur1: namely, "it doesn't work" or "no sound card detected"?00:55
evil_techthats a common issue with the 600e00:55
neur1lol yes00:55
evil_techxubuntu mis identifies the soundcard00:55
crimsunneur1: right, fairly easily resolved.  Use http://trilug.org/~crimsun/tp-init-snd-cs4236.sh00:56
neur1ebay special00:56
crimsunneur1: also, make sure fast/quick/easy boot is /disabled/ in bios.00:56
neur1did the bio's thing00:56
crimsunevil_tech: err, no, it doesn't misidentify it.  It's a resource clash with non-compliant hardware.00:57
crimsunpretty common back then, and sadly, even today.00:57
evil_techoh00:57
evil_techthe place i got the fix from has the problem labeled wrong00:59
neur1whoa is that a link to a file to download?01:00
crimsunneur1: yes.01:00
crimsunneur1: it's a community-written script that I modified for *buntu quite some time ago.01:01
neur1do i save or open with less (default)?01:01
tuga3dhow do i share an internet connection in xubuntu?01:01
crimsunneur1: save it.01:02

neur1open a terminal?01:03
alainUnable to contact the Xfce Trash service. anyone know something about this ?01:03
neur1crimsun, how do I execute?01:05
crimsunneur1: sudo bash tp-init-snd-cs4236.sh01:06
neur1what if I get no file or directory01:07
neur1how do I point it to the file01:07
crimsunneur1: did you download it to your desktop?01:08
neur1it's on the desktop yes01:08
crimsunneur1: then it probably needs to be `sudo bash ~/Desktop/tp-init-snd-cs4236.sh`01:08
crimsunI don't recall offhand if the Desktop entry has the same dirname01:09
neur1still no file found01:10
crimsunfind ~ -name 'tp-init-snd-cs4236.sh'01:10
crimsun(what does that command return?)01:11
neur1- /home/neuro: is a directory01:12
crimsunyou need to copy and paste verbatim what I typed above01:13
neur1including find?01:13
crimsunyes.01:13
crimsunthe entire command /exactly/ as I typed it.01:13
neur1nothing it goes to a new line01:14
crimsunok, now replace the '~' with '/'01:14
neur1permision denied01:15
crimsunneur1: for which command?01:27
neur1when i changed ~ to /01:29
neur1find / -name 'tp-init-snd-cs4236.sh'01:31
neur1should I move it to a home file?01:40
crimsunjust download it again and save it to your unprivileged user's home directory01:40
neur1so just leave it on the desktop for now?01:48
crimsunright, and then run the original command I gave you (using ~/Desktop)01:48
neur1instead of find01:49
crimsunyes01:49
neur1this? ~/desktop ~ -name 'tp-init-snd-cs4236.sh'01:54
crimsunno01:54
crimsunsudo bash ~/Desktop/tp-init-snd-cs4236.sh01:54

merovingian58if anyone has some experience with my problem, i'd appreciate some help.  my roommate is trying to install ubuntu, and I am trying to install xubuntu.  i've tried the installer and the alternate installer for version 7.10.  We both get the installers to start, and then about 3/4 of the way through the install, our laptops go to a black screen and the install stops dead.  any advice???02:02
s2weleeI am noticing that the battery monitor seems to use quite a bit of processor power.  Has anyone else noticed this?02:28

s2weleemerovingian58:  I had a similar issue and I could not ever get around it.  I ended up installing 7.04 with no issues.  I am not sure why, but it might be worth a shot.02:36
merovingian58thanks for that.  i'm going to try it!02:37
s2weleeI cannot assure you that it will work, but all of my 7.04 installs have gone much better than 7.10.  Good luck!02:39
