aziegleri use kubuntu gutsy00:07
jhutchinsthere are some faulty ata chipsets out there, and a few that don't have compatible drivers.00:07
azieglermy printer is an canon pixma ip530000:07
jackI thought it was gusty for a long time :(00:07
MinatakuHm00:08
jhutchinsOften a problem like that is a matter of one chip in the chipset not being quite right.00:08
x_zeusson same computer it worked with only one hdd installed, a very old 6,4 GB one00:08
* jack is a moron00:08
MinatakuYeah, this may very well be a case00:08

jackHow do I make a new Kwallet?00:09
stdinjack watch the language00:09
Minatakux_zeuss: Is there more to the error than just that?00:09
jackD:00:09
Dr_willisI know there are some Canon printers that have NO linux support at all.00:09
jhutchinsx_zeuss: lower speeds or protocols may not stress whatever's broken.00:09
MinatakuAnd that is true, what jh said00:09
MinatakuIt's possible that the older drive isn't capable of reaching what's causing the issue00:09
jackFixed00:10
MinatakuWhich seems to be broken DMA from what I can gather off Google00:10
MinatakuIt would seem that faster drives are trying to go faster than the controller can support, the controller CLAIMS to support it, but it's actually broken00:10
x_zeussthat's the only error00:10
MinatakuYour ATA chipset is bogus00:10
x_zeusshmmm, and the sollution is another motherboard?00:11
MinatakuOr an expansion card with separate chipset00:11
MinatakuI could be wrong too, but it's likely that your chipset is lame, or the drivers can't support it00:12
theverant.j #ubuntu00:12
MinatakuPastebin your dmesg for me00:12

INIT_6Just installed kubuntu. however, i think it didn't set my root (hd0,1) correctly. If I boot into the live cd. how do i edit the correct /boot/grub/menu.lst.00:13
x_zeussi'm a little noob so you'll have to tell me where to look for it00:13
MinatakuType "dmesg > tempfile" in an xterm00:13
MinatakuThen open up tempfile in, say, Kate or somesuch00:14
MinatakuThen select all, copy, and paste it into !pastebin00:14
Minataku!pastebin00:14
ubotupastebin is a service to post large texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (be sure to give the URL of your paste - see also the #kubuntu channel topic)00:14

MinatakuDoes your Linux installation boot at all?00:14

x_zeussit doesn't boot into the gui00:15
x_zeussonly a few seconds of splash screen and than busybox with that error00:16
MinatakuHrm00:16
MinatakuIt's definitely a chipset issue00:16
MinatakuIt's either bad or unsupported00:16
x_zeussbut the opensuse 10.3 witch has same kernel doesn't have this problem00:16
MinatakuAt which point I don't think there's much that can be done00:16
MinatakuHrm00:16
MinatakuThen it's unsupported by Kubuntu00:17

x_zeussit's allready filed by others but still no sollution00:17
jhutchinsx_zeuss: Suse has access to propietary closed-source driver code.00:17
MinatakuIf it works in another distro, then it's Kubuntu at fault00:17
jhutchinsx_zeuss: Or rather, Novell does.00:17
MinatakuDoes OpenSUSE?00:18
admin_how do i get "sans" in kubuntu? I can get "Sans" in XFCE00:18
MinatakuOpenSUSE I believe is no longer directly under Novell00:18
jhutchinsMinataku: Of course, it's the same company.00:18
jhutchinsMinataku: Novell's just not paying the devs.00:18
* Minataku shrugs00:18
jhutchinsThey let people work on it for free, then they adopt the code into the closed products.00:19
MinatakuSounds like FUD to me, jhutchins00:19
MinatakuYou have conclusive proof of this?00:19
MinatakuLast I checked, the GPL didn't allow for such00:19
admin_how do i get "sans" in kubuntu? I can get "Sans" in XFCE00:20
MinatakuI know for a fact Sun does it with OpenSolaris, because the CDDL is set up for that00:20
MinatakuOf course, they also keep the contributed code open as well00:20
jhutchinsMinataku: OS-X, RHEL, there's others.00:20

sammy(not saying there aren't any reasons why) why would someone install a mozilla thunderbird extension through adept-installer/manager instead of through thunderbird's add-on manager?02:10
BluesKajreinstalling 7.10 is an option jagcorvair , albeit a rather drastic one ...of i must ask the obvious question does system settings/advanced/disk&filesystems show the dvdrom ?02:10
jagcorvairThe other drive, the one that doesn't want to work, Is a DL DVD burner. I just put in a CD and it didn't even load as it did with the CD-R drive.02:10
ardchoillesammy: Reasons #1 the package manager can auto-=update the extension so the user doesn't have to worry about it02:11
jagcorvairBluesKaj: Checking right now.....02:11
sammyardchoille: gold star. and cookie02:11
jagcorvairBluesKaj: Yes, it does02:11

jagcorvairBluesKaj: Mount: /media/cdrom1    device:  /dev/scd1     Type: Auto02:12
jagcorvairBluesKaj: Oh yeah, it's on disabled. It won't enable02:13
sammythunderbird's package manager doesn't automagically (or have the option to) check for updates, like the firefox add-on manager?02:13
sammys/package manager/extension manager/02:14
BluesKajjagcorvair, it will be disabled if there's no media in the device02:14
jagcorvairBluesKaj: The Kubuntu 7.10 CD is inside the DVD drive02:14
jagcorvairI think I'm going to start fresh02:16
BluesKajgot me puzzled unless you didn't choose a username & password when you installed02:18
BluesKajactaully I'm glad he din't see that last remark :)02:19
ardchoillesammy: Not sure, but think about this. What happens if there is a huge security hole and a security update to the extension and I don't use thunderbird for a month.. that security hole goes unpatched for a month until I run tb again? But, if I install it via the package manager, it gets updated sooner.02:19
ardchoilleIt may not be a big deal, but I dislike leaving updates go for more than 24 hours.02:20

WaltzingAlongxst: otherwise in kcontrol / file associations11:17
xstWaltzingAlong: I just did a distro upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy so isn't this a bug in the upgrade?11:19
xstWhat does Joe Average do about this problem in general? Is he forced to use kcontrol too?11:19
WaltzingAlongxst: perhaps the shortcuts should point to gimp rather than specific versions; otherwise these settings are stored under your personal settings11:20
WaltzingAlongxst: you are the first i have seen here to bring it up but i suppose modifying the file associations is the way to go11:20
WaltzingAlongxst: so previous versions should have pointed to 'gimp' rather than 'gimp-2.2'; i would not want the dist upgrade tool modifying my personal settings to fix issues with remaining references gimp-2.2 when gimp-2.4 is installed instead11:22

WaltzingAlongX314: when you get to the grub screen where you can select which system to load (you may have to press ESC to see the list) you could make changes to the entry to disable splash and quiet so you see more output16:47
X314okay.. I'll try that.. be back in 5 min or so..16:48
waylandbilland the changes don't even need to be permanent. Grub allows one time modification of the command to boot.16:49
LaSombraAnyone knows if kwin has a tendency to crash with compiz?16:56
waylandbillLaSombra: yes. alot.16:57
WaltzingAlongLaSombra: either you use compiz or you use kwinh hence kwin --replace    or compiz --replace16:57
LaSombrawaylandbill: Hmmm. Imagined that.16:57
WaltzingAlongkwin*16:57
LaSombraWaltzingAlong: Yeah, thx :/16:58
LaSombraHope this can be fixed inside Kubuntu and not upstream.16:58
WaltzingAlongLaSombra: so what do you mean? when compize --replace is launched, compize becomes the window manager, replacing any other window manager (ie kwin)16:58
X314hmm.. 7.10.. isent that Gutsy..?16:58
waylandbillLaSombra: I'm guessing that the window decorations disappear on you.16:58
WaltzingAlongLaSombra: what is there to fix?16:58
WaltzingAlongX314: yes 7.10 gutsy gibbon16:59
X314WaltzingAlong so my system has updated to gutsy, could that be why its not working..? it was 7.04 before16:59

Jucatoyou can't have kwin and compiz running at the same time17:00
Daisuke-Laptopand why oh WHY would you not want it fixed upstream?17:00
WaltzingAlongX314: sure could be something during the upgrade; had you used envy or automatix or installed the kernel modules manually for your video card17:00
Daisuke-Laptopthat's just...  wow17:00
LaSombraWaltzingAlong: KWin should be used instead of emerald for example17:01

Daisuke-Laptopcompiz is a window manager17:01
Daisuke-Laptopemerald is a window DECORATOR17:01
Daisuke-Laptopkwin cannot be used interchangably with emerald.17:01
JucatoLaSombra: you can't use kwin with compiz. compiz has window decorator that "emulates" kwin window decorations17:02
X314WaltzingAlong hmm.. I dident do anything manualy.. I barely know what I'm doing at all most of the time -.- .. but well.. any advice on what to do about it?17:03
WaltzingAlongLaSombra: but maybe you mean that there are some problems with compiz, like titlebars going missing17:03
waylandbillthat's the most likely problem.17:04
Jucatoand it's not about kwin crashing (which it can't, since it can't be running, or at least shouldn't be, while compiz is being used)17:04
WaltzingAlongX314: were you able to boot at least so you could log into the !terminal ?        did it seem the distupgrade to gutsy went well? which kernel are you running (uname -a)17:04

Jucatoit does... if you're not experiencing that, there's something wrong on your end... unfortunately...18:23
jmcnerneyDisabled? I just did a fresh Dapper Drake install, no modifications. My last build was ubuntu (not kubuntu) and I had no problems.18:24
stdinjmcnerney: either that or you've selected to filter only installed packages from the filter list at the top18:24
stdinjmcnerney: if you installed with no active network (internet) connection then the sources will be disabled by default18:24

* stdin notes there _is_ a reason kubuntu didn't ship with compiz...18:46
MinatakuWhat reason is that?18:46
stdinbecause it doesn't work :p18:46
stdincompiz doesn't like KDE apparently18:46
MinatakuWell, apparantly, for a lot of people, nothing does18:46
Tecumsehfrom what I'm seeing now is that kwin is starting at bootup, then compiz kills it and uses kde-window-decorator wich then crashes. Is there an option to not start kwin but start compiz to start with?18:46
MinatakuThe Compiz losers are probably in league with GNOME to create some kind of lockin18:47
stdinTecumseh: that's not the problem, that's what supposed to happen (and it doesn't kill kwin, it asks it to stop managing the windows and exit)18:47
MinatakuI wouldn't put it past GNOME, I mean, they have to get users somehow despite how GTK sucks18:47
Minataku:P18:48
jussio1Tecumseh: try removing the startup script if you made it18:48
MinatakuI'm joking of course18:48
trappistTecumseh: there's an env var you can export in your .bashrc to set kde's decorator to, say, emerald insead of kwin18:48
MinatakuBut I DO think that GNOME and GTK suck18:48
Tecumsehjussio1: no startup created yet18:48
trappistTecumseh: found it, export KDEWM="compiz --replace"18:48
