sbalneavEvening all01:07
LaserJockhi sbalneav01:18
sbalneavHey LaserJock!01:26
JoeErrorHello all, I'd like to shoot a quick question at y'all. I'm taking over a small computer lab at the local Y and I'm pretty set on edubuntu. I'm wondering what the best way to remotely administer the entire lab would be? I'm proficient enough to do it all with bash, and what I was ideally hoping for was some way to use bash to make changes to ALL the computers in the lab as simultaneously as possible. Of course I'm not opposed to user02:13
BurgundaviaJoeError: if you are using ltsp, a chnage on the server will affect all the computers02:19
JoeErrorltsp... I'm not familiar with that...02:22
JoeErrorI'll look into that02:22
JoeErrorbeautiful that's exactly what I want02:22
JoeErrorthanks02:22
Artemkanybody already made OO as local application?04:07
sbalneavArtemka: N04:16
sbalneavArtemka: No04:16
JoeErroranyone know a way to basically put a "new user" button on the gdm login screen?04:17
sbalneavyou mean to add a user?04:20
JoeErroryeah04:20
JoeErrorbut I don't want to do it for every user04:21
JoeErrorI want the users to be able to do that04:21
JoeErrorI'm under the impression I might actually just not have seen the option to do that04:21
sbalneavNo, there's no way to do that.  Adding users is a priviledged operation.  Besides, you probably DON'T want random people creating their own accounts.04:21
sbalneavYou'd very quickly have a box with 1000's of accounts on it :)04:22
JoeErrorwell it's for a computer lab at the y04:23
JoeErrorusing old computers04:23
JoeErroras thin clients04:23
JoeErrorand I kinda do want them to do that04:24
JoeErrorI can't sit there and add all the users04:24
sbalneavWhy not?  The Y's probably got membership cards and a user database of some sort I'd expect, why not simply grab04:25
JoeErrorbecause I seriously doubt they'd let me04:25
sbalneavan export of that, and create a script to do a bulk add, or some such/04:25
sbalneavThey're probably ALSO not going to want random people off the street being able to walk in and create accounts on the Y's computer systems, either :)04:26
JoeErrorwell you can't go into the Y as a random person anymore04:26
JoeErrorthey have to identify themselves as members as soon as they walk in the door04:26
Burgundaviaa better solution is to create a kiosk account04:27
Burgundaviasbalneav: did you ever finish that pam_rmhomedir?04:27
sbalneavcode was posted, and it worked.04:27
sbalneavNo one ever did anything with it.04:27
sbalneavguest accounts would be the better way to go.04:28
Burgundaviaif you want to run an uncrippled guest account, you basically need to create and remove home dirs as you go04:29

charlie_stating thatit has been done15:33
sbalneavShouldn't really matter HOW many cores your server has.  If Linux supports it, then it should work15:33

pygithat's a person :D16:48
airjumpahhhh OK16:48
pygipersonally, I think OLPC works best with it's own OS :)16:49
airjumpOK16:49
airjumpBut i think the asus eee pc is a good alternative for Europe people16:51
pygiwell, send me one, and I'll test it for you :)16:52
airjumpIn my environment, there are a lot of the young people they want to have simple PC16:52
airjumpi talk today with the asus hotline in germany16:52

LaserJockhighvoltage: they're selling Eee's here. I'm a bit surprised. They're all sold out of course, but I'm sure they'll get more17:45
highvoltageLaserJock: yes, seems like it's a big hit17:47
LaserJockyeah17:47
highvoltageLaserJock: I love the idea of solid state storafe. hard disks are so clunky, noisy and use a lot of energy17:48
highvoltagefast "seek" times would also be nice.17:48
LaserJockI'm worried about speed and that they will wear out quicker17:48
LaserJocka hard drive is pretty easy to replace17:49
LaserJockhighvoltage: have you had a chance to do anything with the edubuntu.org theme17:52
LaserJockI've been so busy with school, etc. I haven't been able to do anything17:53
highvoltageLaserJock: same here, and will be for the next two weeks still. after that, I'll be pretty much free for a month (I can't wait)17:55
highvoltageLaserJock: I like what Vincint did with the http://www.xubuntu.org site, he gave the old theme a bit of a facelift, while they get the new theme done17:56
highvoltageLaserJock: I'm going to steal some of his ideas, he said it's fine17:56
juliuxhey LaserJock herman_17:58
juliuxhey LaserJock highvoltage17:58
LaserJockhighvoltage: cool, the Xubuntu site looks pretty decent. Better than it used to17:58
LaserJockhighvoltage: what do you think about making the background white? so it's basically red and white17:59
highvoltagehey juliux17:59
highvoltageLaserJock: you mean so that the yellow part is white, from the current edubuntu theme?18:00
LaserJockhighvoltage: yep18:09
LaserJockhighvoltage: do you have the current theme somewhere?18:10
x_orI am trying to install ubuntu in Brazil.  I downloaded the CD after about ten hours and it looks like it is corrupted.  It does boot into the liveCD mode, and I am actually typing using Ubuntu.  However, the installer will not work, it complains of a disk error.  Does anyone know if I can run the installer manually, perhaps downloading the installer packages via the network connection?18:12
pygihighvoltage: so you'll get one to me as well? :D18:46

TailsfanHello, Is the server CD the same thing as teh Alt. Installer22:10
BurgundaviaTailsfan: the same installer, but you get different things22:11
TailsfanOK Thanks22:11
Tailsfanbecause I'm trying to finish my Ubuntu Collection and I wanted to know If I got teh right image or not22:11
TailsfanI now have all the Desktop/Live and Alt. Installer CDs for Gutsy for teh Official Ubuntu Family22:13
Burgundaviabasically, there are two installers22:14
Tailsfanbut I wanted to install the GUI version22:14
Burgundaviathe alternate one is based on the debian-installer and the live one is called Ubiquity, although it uses a lot of logic and code from d-i22:14
Burgundaviawhat you install with those installs depends on what cd you get22:14
Burgundaviathe desktop alternate and the desktop live will install the same system, at least for Ubuntu22:14
Burgundaviafor edubuntu I don't actually know, as I have never actually installed Edubunt822:15
Tailsfanbut I needed the alt. to 1. complete my collection and 2. for whenevr I install it on Virtualization Software22:16
TailsfanI wanted to become a Computer Teacher someday myself anyway22:17
Burgundaviateaching is a lot harder than it seems22:19
TailsfanWhy, are you a teacher?22:19
BurgundaviaI have taught computer stuff, yes22:20
BurgundaviaI have done a lot of things in my life22:20
Burgundavianone of them very well22:20
theunixgeekHello. I'm following the osdev Bare Bones tutorial for writing a simple kernel. http://www.osdev.org/wiki/Bare_bones I'm a complete noob at this, so please don't assume I know all the terminology you guys do. I'd like to be able to boot the kernel shown in the tutorial in either Bochs or QEMU. How would I go about this?22:21
Burgundaviatheunixgeek: this is also not the correct place to ask22:21
BurgundaviaI suggest you try to osdev mailing list or forums22:21
theunixgeekBurgundavia: sorry :(22:22
Tailsfanwell, if anything I teach my family on how to use certain functions on a OC22:25
TailsfanPC*22:26
TailsfanI'm the computer nerd of my family22:26
Burgundaviafamily is a great target for adoption22:26
Burgundaviamy brother was my first target22:26
TailsfanIf anything, I'm installing Edubuntu now so I can help people on the go22:26
pmvalenteplease, someone could helpme, I've install edubuntu server and used a thin cliente and evething works good, but my proble is how to put disk space limits to the users?22:40
Burgundaviapmvalente: quotas22:41
pmvalenteyes I think so.22:41
pmvalente please, someone could help me, I've install edubuntu server and used a thin client and evething works good, but my problem is how to put disk space limits to the users? "quotas"22:48

davubunt1Hello23:35
Burgundaviahello23:35
davubunt1I have some questions about edubuntu23:36
pygishoot23:36
davubunt1I am in Nicaragua and I have a friend who would like to find out more about edubuntu because he is a very welthy philanthopist and he runs a group for kids23:37
davubunt1He has about 2400 kids who he feeds 4 nights per week23:37
davubunt1and he runss after school programs etc.23:37
davubunt1I have used ubuntu for a while but I'm no techie23:37
davubunt1He has about 15 machines set up with pirated windows at the moment23:38
davubunt1which he tries to educate kids on23:38
davubunt1He has all the usual problems with Windows23:38
davubunt1slow, viruses... you know the ones23:38
davubunt1He is willing to get thinstations in23:38
davubunt1Can you give me some useful links as to what sort of set up he should look at23:39
davubunt1I went to the download page but I'm not sure what to give him23:39
davubunt1Oh it is probably better if the info is available in Spanish too as his current sysadmin doesn't speak english23:40
pygiohm :-/23:41
pyginot  a fun situation23:41
pygiI dont think edubuntu handbook is translated to spanish23:41
davubunt1It's fun for the potential23:41
davubunt1Hmm23:41
davubunt1He can probably get it translated23:41
davubunt1He is that sort of guy23:41
davubunt1If you can just give me links I will give them to him23:43
davubunt1Maybe I can find a local LUG who can help out23:43
davubunt1I know Free Software Magazine ran an article about thinstations in an educational environment but it is a bit old now23:44
Burgundaviapygi: given we have such a huge spanish community, it shouldn't be hard23:45
davubunt1Well as I said if it's not in Spanish I would not be surprised if he can get some of his volunteers to translate it and I will let him know he should upload it.23:45
davubunt1He is raising a new generation of kids here in Nicaragua23:45
davubunt1I can search the net but I thought you guys might be able to offer me the best links off the bat.23:47
davubunt1And this is a very worthy cause23:47
davubunt1I know if I search I will find Ubuntu oriented articles primarily23:47
pygiwell, Burgundavia, you instruct davubunt1 then :)23:48
davubunt1I would have gone to the Spanish community first but I don't speak spanish very well.23:50
davubunt1:)23:50
davubunt1I just need some links to get the sys admin started and I need to know what CD to start her off with.23:50
davubunt1Okay...?23:54
davubunt1I guess I'll try elsewhere... thanks anyway23:54
davubunt1.join #ubuntu23:57
