ochosihi everyone, quick question: where-else shall i look for (debian automagic) startmenu entries apart from /usr/share/applications?08:18
squirrelpimpif i hold alt and push the mousewheel down, the current window goes into background. if i do that again on the then visible underlying window, the window from the background come to the front.11:16
squirrelpimpthat way i get a toggle feature... however it should cycle throug the other windows on my screen before11:16
squirrelpimpis that a bug or am i misinterpreting a feature here?11:17
tunaSo, i managed to screw up pretty bad. Now, the list of everything that is supposed to start when a session starts is empty. how do I fix this?13:02
tunaRight now, when I login to x, xfce4-session starts xfwm starts, but that's it. i got a cursor and a background13:03
tunawhen i try to start anything else from serial console, like DISPLAY=:0 xfce4-panel, all I get is a segfault. So I suppose they need some support process that isn't there13:05
livingdaylighthELLO13:42
tuna-fishthis is really quite weird.13:45
tuna-fishinstalling ubuntu-desktop got xfce4 working again13:46
livingdaylightis xubuntu an african word too?13:46
tuna-fishI don't think so13:47
livingdaylightwhy does xfce have a mouse for an icon?13:47
livingdaylightit could be called Ratatouille now, no?13:48
tichhi.  i am currently using ubuntu (gnome) but i am dissatisfied with how it manages the desktop (especially with twinview).  i loved how xfce deals with twinview but i when i last used it i could draw a box on the desktop to highlight and move multiple icons.  is it possible yet?13:55
tichso i realize the question sounds a little bit trivial.  it is so trivial that no one really documents anything about it (that i could find through googling) my only other option would to download an iso, burn it and run the livecd to find the answer. so i would really appreciate it if someone could tell me.14:02
tich...?14:08
livingdaylighttich, i am quite happy with how gnome is progressing14:12
tichi like gnome.14:19
tichbut i xfce gives more options for the second screen.  when i fullscreen a movie with gnome (and twinview) it spreads across both monitors but, when last i tried, with xfce it would use only one of the monitors.14:21
tichbut...14:22
tichi like gnome.14:22
tichi didn't mean to diss it.  i just want to know if it is possible to move multiple icons at once on the xfce desktop.14:23
tichlivingdaylight: is it possible?14:25
livingdaylighttich, don't know sir14:26
tichlivingdaylight: do you use xubuntu?14:28
livingdaylightnope...14:29
tichthat's hilarious.14:29
livingdaylighti don't think anyone in here uses xubuntu, :p14:36

TheSheepsomerville32: in what sense?20:19
somerville32TheSheep, So it boots into Xfce4 instead of Gnome.20:20
TheSheepsomerville32: just select it on the login screen20:20
TheSheepsomerville32: it will ask whether to save that change20:20
somerville32I want to do this from the command line20:20

ActySoftsdoes anyone have any ideas how to switch from ubuntu to xubuntu without formatting everything??20:49
TheSheepActySofts: install the xubuntu-desktop package, then select 'xfce4' at your login screen20:50
ActySoftseg I could install xubuntu-desktop and uninstall ubuntu-desktop, but lots of stuff will remain20:50
TheSheepActySofts: just remove the things you don't need20:50
TheSheepActySofts: besides, they only take some extra disk space, they don't make your computer slower20:51
ActySoftshowever, do I need to do it from a console environment or I can do it from the gui & restart?20:52
TheSheepActySofts: you can install xubuntu-desktop from gui, log out, log in into xfce and uninstall the gnome things you don't want20:53
ActySoftsok thanks20:53

whyking_There is a debian package I want to use in my ubuntu, is there a clean way to do this?22:13
somerville32What debian package?22:14
whyking_python-qt422:14
whyking_I know that there is a ubuntu package22:15
whyking_but I need the latest version22:15
whyking_ubuntu is 4.3.0, debian is 4.3.122:15
somerville32Why do you need the latest?22:16
TheSheepwhyking_: should install, unless it uses soem weird dependencies22:16
somerville32I don't recommend you install it22:16
somerville32You'll lose all ubuntu changes22:16
somerville32Ask for it to be merged/synced22:17
somerville32Infact, bug me about it later and I'll look into it for you. Can you hold off until then?22:17
whyking_TheSheep, so I shoudlN#t be worried about being attacked by a raptor when I do it?22:17
whyking_somerville32, what would you look into?22:17
somerville32whyking_, No, just worry about breaking your system.22:17
whyking_somerville32, yeah, tahts my concern22:17
somerville32whyking_, I'll either do the merge/sync myself.22:17
somerville32Oh wait. You're not using Hardy, I bet. lol22:18

Super_BQany other PCI ATA-133 card users here? Would like to know how well Xubuntu supports ATA133 on old PII boxes22:27
gerrofollowing the cd method here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=318789 for updating bios however the floppy size image is too small, what do I do?22:34
psi_newbieIs it common to experience many disruptions in the package downloads for upgrading to 7.10?22:46
psi_newbieI have performed it on 2 computers, and have had to make ~10 attempts each to get all the packages since transfer ~frequently stops.  Is that a server/traffic issue or me??22:46
gerropsi_newbie: I noticed on my friends system his sometimes drops to 5 bps so I have to restart downloads, think its a dsl issue22:47
gerropsi_newbie: can you access your modem? usually on 192.168.1.100 might be some setting you can fix on there if not try checking sysctl.conf for some network parameter options maybe something is wrong with window sizing22:48
gerropsi_newbie: either way fixing window sizing to more accurately depict your network might yield nice performance boost22:52
gerropsi_newbie: try running wireshark while your updating to and pastebin the logs from it22:53
gerropsi_newbie: any thoughts?...22:57
psi_newbieI am using dsl, and wouldn't be surprised if that was the issue.  wireshark? -- I was looking it up22:58
psi_newbiemy gkrellm eth0 monitor shows nothing during the downtime, and my local router traffic lights stop blinking, but I wasn't sure if that was a lack of response or connection22:59
psi_newbieI'll try wireshark since it sound like a personal issue.  I presume my experience isn't common to upgraders in general then.23:02
psi_newbiethanks23:02
gerrogkrellm?23:04
psi_newbiegkrellm - small desktop system monitor including panels for lan, wlan connections23:07
gerroohh ok were a lot of plugins for it and didn't really know what it did23:08
psi_newbieI'm off to another attempt to get the remaining packages to upgrade this machine.  Hope it doesn't take too many more attemtps.  Thanks for the advice.  Xubuntu itself has kept this old laptop functioning well!23:11
gerroah shame he left23:12
gerrohe could just copy his apt cache over nfs be lot faster23:12
