perrakoLike, I just tried to load www.ubuntuforums.org and it loaded en.google.com00:00
bobfarleyDr_willis you hit a dvd+- boot problem with old dvd drives00:00
Minatakubobfarley: I've had plenty of working OSes fail to boot on some machines00:00
dgaso then it's eyecandy(gnome&compiz-fusion) vs. solid desktop environment (kde)00:00
perrakoand I can load the firefox extension pages but it won't let me install any of them (clicking the install does nothing)00:00
MinatakuOooh, cool, another episode of How It's Made00:00
perrakovideos won't load from any site.... it's so bizarre00:00
Dr_willisbobfarley,  these were all decemntly new machines..  I wonder if the one it did boot on was the old machine.. i forget which one it was now. :)00:00
Minatakudga: Don't forget that both GNOME and Compiz are poorly written, lousy and ugly00:00
bobfarleyand gOS image now fits on a cdr00:00
bobfarleyhttp://www.thinkgos.com/00:01
Dr_willisbobfarley,  i was on a cd when i tried it.00:01

dgaMinataku ugly? compiz looks so cool00:01
MinatakuIt looks like frickin' OSX00:01
MinatakugOS, that is00:01

Dr_willisubuntu,  oddly enough ive seen others in here asking that.. and i never have seen/herard how/Why thats even possible.00:13

Dr_willisubuntu,  this is with all web sites? how about their ip address? can you ping google.com ?00:13

Dr_willisso  ' ping google.com '    and  'ping  72.14.207.99 ' both work ubuntu ?00:14
ardchoilleGrav3Mind: http://ardchoille42.googlepages.com/00:14
ardchoilleGrav3Mind: In that tutorial install "kwin-baghira" and start at step 2, since you don't need to compile baghira.00:14
Grav3Mindhmmmm00:15
Grav3Mindguys i have another question00:15
ardchoilleGrav3Mind: sudo apt-get install kwin-baghira, then contiue with the tutorial, no need to compile baghira00:15
MinatakuThat would be KDE's idiocy00:15
Grav3Mindhow hard would it be to install ubuntu00:15

Grav3Mindwith kubuntu00:15
ubuntupinged with the url and with the ip just fine00:15
ardchoilleGrav3Mind: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop00:15
MinatakuKDE requires KDE apps to connect to the internet through it's stupid network manager00:15
Grav3Mindfrom konsole?00:16
Dr_willisGrav3Mind,  you can easially have 2+ desktops on the same machine.. no need to 'install' 2 whole os's00:16
Grav3Mindand that works?00:16
MinatakuIf it's useless network manager doesn't see the network, neither does any crappy KDE application00:16
ardchoilleGrav3Mind: yes, that will get you the ubuntu desktop00:16
Grav3Mindcause i want gnome00:16
MinatakuYou know, because useless abstraction layers are all the rage00:16
Dr_willisthen the login screen has a menu to pick what desktop.  No haxoring needed like in windows - to change desktps here00:16

ardchoilleyes, ubuntu-desktop is the gnome desktop00:16
Dr_willisGrav3Mind,  then install 'ubuntu-desktop' set it to use GDM when it asks if you want to use gdm.00:16

brad12345hmm, yah and i have an ati card... you think that tool would work maybe?01:27
Dr_willisTarin,  what are you tryign to do exactly?01:27
Dr_willis!info samba-doc01:27
ubotusamba-doc: Samba documentation. In component main, is optional. Version 3.0.26a-1ubuntu2.2 (gutsy), package size 6816 kB, installed size 14752 kB01:27
Dr_willisnonewmsgs,  is in the samba-doc package.. and some other books also are in there. :)01:27
nonewmsgssweetness01:27
Tarini added an svn to my apt repo not thinking about it01:27
Tarinnow i need to delete it or comment it out01:28
Dr_willisTarin,  'sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list' and change it.01:28
Dr_willisthats the easy way01:28
BluesKajTarin, copy the file path , beginning with the first / and open the k-menu , choose run command and type kdesu kate /pathtofilename01:28
Dr_willisor like BluesKaj  says use kdesu and a graphical editor.01:28
Tarini used the konsole01:30
Tarini want to get as used to using the command line as much as possible01:30
BluesKajthen do Dr_willis' suggestion01:30
* Dr_willis gives Tarin a Gold Star01:30
Dr_willis:)01:30
BluesKajit makes no diff it's still going open kate no matter what , i see no advantage to the cli for opening and editing files, but this is an old windows dude talking :)01:32
brad12345I'm a super linux noob and i must say: linux is pretty awesome01:32
Dr_willisIf he ever has a case where X is dead.. now he knows how to use nano. :)01:33
brad12345what is the best way / program to compile source code??01:33
Dr_willisbrad12345,  with a text editor? and  a C compiler?01:33
BluesKajyeah , ok01:33
NickPrestabrad12345, we need more information to help you better01:34
nonewmsgsi like anjuta01:34
Dr_willisbrad12345,  you might watn to clarify the question a bit. :)01:34
brad12345i've been trying though the konsole with ./configure01:34
brad12345hmm01:34
Dr_willis./confogure is normally used as part of source code packages.. yes...01:34
Dr_willisit then makes a config file after checking a lot of things , for make to use.01:34
MinatakuI used to use Windows, but I do everything from the CLI01:34
brad12345okay01:34
MinatakuDr_Willis: Actually, the configure script makes the makefile itself01:35
MinatakuThe downside is that the guy who made the program has to make the configure script01:35
MinatakuIf it doesn't come with one, you have to hope it's all in place01:35
MinatakuMy luck compiling things without configure scripts is about 40%01:35
Dr_willisYep :) saw a configyure script once that required tcsh (i think) which confused the heck out of me for a bit...01:35
brad12345okay...i;ve had pretty poor goings so far.  but from what i've read it can be a tricky process01:36
Dr_willisbrad12345,  what can be tricky? gettibng  basic C stuff compiling, and written?01:36
BluesKajMinataku, I've encountered quite a few tarballs that don't come with a configure script or make or even make install scripts ...they have 'install' scripts01:37
brad12345well, for instance, downloading a tar.gz file from sourceforge and then trying to get it into a working app01:37
Dr_willisbrad12345,  rather straight forward.01:38
Dr_willisgee.. a dcc offer.. how nice of you Barbecue01:38
NickPrestaDr_willis, I was thinking the same thing. I don't need 8 copies of "mirc.ini"01:38
MinatakuHeh01:38
Dr_willisNickPresta,  i only got offered 3!01:38
Dr_willis:P01:38

NickPrestaVulcanRidr, how can we help you?03:24
VulcanRidrFirst, I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy, and I can't install any kdm themes. I also installed kbfx, but I can't install any themes.03:24
NickPrestaVulcanRidr, where are you installing the themes from? Could you install themes in Feisty?03:25
VulcanRidrYes I could, and the ones I had installed work, but I can't install new ones. I am downloading to my desktop and installing from the system settings menu. (appearance).03:26
Tarincan i stop the upgrade without breaking my feisty?/03:26
* genii sips03:26
NickPrestaVulcanRidr, are you downloading the themes from kde-look.org or something? Can I download the theme and test it on my system?03:27
GreythaneVulcanRidr - I had to install the kdetheme manager - not included in the gutsy defaults (that I could find)03:27
VulcanRidrYes I am. The kdm theme I downloaded this evening was 69034-kdmflower.tar.gz, and I untarred that and tried to install 3dkdmflower.tar.gz03:28
Greythaneyou will have to extract the gz and end up with a directory & ca .kth file which is the theme configuration03:30
NickPrestaVulcanRidr, are you talking about: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/3dKdmflower?content=69034 ?03:30
VulcanRidrGreythane: I have kdmtheme installed. A holdover from Feisty.03:30
VulcanRidrYes, that is the theme, NickPresta.03:31
NickPrestaVulcanRidr, what error do you get?03:33
VulcanRidrNo error, just the theme does not show up in the list after I click "install theme" and select the theme.03:35
NickPrestaDo you get a message box about override file warning?03:36
VulcanRidrI did...I just noticed that because it popped under the main window. Whats do I need to change?03:37
NickPrestaWell, apparently, the kdm theme manager isn't updating a file in /etc/default/kdm.d/ which controls the kdm settings, meaning that any change you make in the kdm theme manager section won't work. This (appears) to be a bug03:38
VulcanRidrAnd does that apply to kbfx? (I installed kbfx-Silk)03:39
VulcanRidrAnd it works on my Debian box.03:39
NickPrestaI don't know about your kbfx issue. That is probably something totally unrelated to the kdm theme issue.03:39
VulcanRidrOkay. Thats what I was checking, because it behaves the same way.03:40
VulcanRidrGuys, thanks for the help.03:45

vbgunz_I have a problem. storage mediums attached to the system do not show up on the desktop *unless* I mount something. so, if I mount the cdrom then unmount it, they all show up just fine... it's just a workaround05:05
Dr_willisYou can set up sudo. where a user can run commands and not need to enter the root password. Or if you want to be more secure. Youc an set where a user can run SPECIFIC commands with sudo with no password. , or if you want to be INSECURE. you chould set the 'suid' bit on the program and it will get ran as root without need for sudo. vbgunz_I have to this for all accounts. is there a universal Autostart folder that'll affect all users?05:16
Dr_willisof course   i have some machines that grub does not like their usb keyboards. :P05:16
Dr_willisvbgunz_,  not that i am aware of.05:16
vbgunz_Dr_willis: I'll ask in #kde, those guys are real helpful05:16
Dr_willisvbgunz_,  if you are going to be making new users you may want to alter the /etc/skel/ dir to have the changes in it.05:16
[GhOsT]I have got a simple question guys05:17
Dr_willis[GhOsT],  ok...05:17
vbgunz_Dr_willis: I admit I have plenty to learn in regards to linux.. I just spend too much time learning programming, etc and not my own OS :(05:18
[GhOsT]I have download 64 bit Gutsy DVD , unfortunately I am not able to run installation with graphics mode05:18
Dr_willisDosent the DVD also have the 'text mode' installer?  I thouht it did.05:18
[GhOsT]text mode installation worked fine but then it is same as installation with graphics mode , black blank screen05:19
Dr_willis[GhOsT],  and whats your video card?05:19
[GhOsT]Geforce 8600M GS05:19
Dr_willisThats weird. that  card should work fine.05:20
Dr_willisYou will need to install the proper nvidia drivers to get itworking at full speed.05:20
[GhOsT]did i download wrong edition ?05:20
[GhOsT]I have got Core2 Duo cpu05:20
dxdtI tried to install the KDE 4 on Ubuntu 7.10, but it is really messed up.  I know that it is just a RC, so it will have bugs, but is it supposed to be totally messed up and ususable, or just buggy?  Anyone here using it?  Is there something else I need to do besides what Kubuntu's site instructed?05:20
Dr_williswell theres proberly no need for you to be using the 64bit version.. and the dvd was proberly overkill as well.05:21
[GhOsT]tried to install 64 bit one , that says amd64 ?05:21
lockddxdt: I was unable to install it, something to do with package conflicts05:21
Dr_willisYou may want to download the normal 32bit live cd. and see how well it works. Of course if it also has the issue. You may have to isntall with the 32bit alternative install cd.05:21
Dr_willisOR you could just try to get this install going05:21
[GhOsT]I need 64 bit one because I have Core2 Duo 2.2 GHz with 4 GB of RAM05:21
Dr_willis[GhOsT],   i think 64bit is needed if you have MORE then 4gb of ram.05:22
Dr_willisthat cpu can handle 32bit just fine.05:22
[GhOsT]under microsoft vista 32 bit , it recognizes only 3 gb05:22
Dr_willisI may be wrong on that ram part.. but im pretty sure  its over 4gb for linux..05:22
[GhOsT]when u turn to 64 bit vista , there u get 4 gb support05:23
Dr_willisWell there may be a catch also with the video ram being part of that 4gb.05:23
Dr_willisif you insist on 64bit then i guess ya manually intall the nvida drivers and reconfigure X.05:23
Dr_willisYou proberly should install the     nvidia-glx - NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org drive    package05:23
Dr_willis'sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx '05:24
Dr_willisthen i think ya need to 'sudo nvidia-xconfig' to get the xorg.conf set up right.05:24
[GhOsT]it sounds like an issue with VEGA driver compability05:25
lockdIs there any possibility of a graphics card with a real open source driver?05:25

[GhOsT]i have a kubuntu 6.10 32 bit CD here too05:26
[GhOsT]let me try this one also05:26
[GhOsT]I will be right back05:26
lockdDr_willis: I mean reassembly is all fine and good05:26
Dr_willisive used several nvidia cards under the different releases and have had no issues.05:27
Dr_willisBut all it takes is for YOU to have an issue..and it can be a real bother. :P05:27
[GhOsT]Thank you in advance , I wanna try 32 bit one now05:27
[GhOsT]will be right back05:27
Dr_willisright back? boy ya got a fast connection to download it that fast. :P05:27
Dr_willisoh ya allready got the cd.. heh heh..05:28
lockdI thought 3gb was some sort of limit for 32 bit, not sure if it is universal05:28
[GhOsT]nope i have it already05:28

[GhOsT]brb05:28
lockdthere's also the "2012" limit for 32 bit dates, but that is a different story05:28
lockd(that one I understand)05:28
Dr_willislockd,  my gateway machine only came with 3gb. :)05:28
Dr_willisbut i was still thinking id heard it was only an issue for over 4gb.  (at least under linux) it may be 3gb for windows05:29
Dr_willishttp://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2007/11/26/32bit-vs-64bit-ubuntu-that-is-the-question/05:29
Dr_willisthat site has some comments abouyt 64bits i never thought of either..05:33
Dr_willisnot sure how accurate the claims are however. :) reduced battery life, 64bit apps needing more ram. (not sure why that would be) and again the mention of 4gb ram (not 3)05:33
Dr_willisWell after doing more research on the 4gb ram limit... i found out that.......... its very confusing.. :)05:38

hydrogen4gb of ram is an x86 limit05:57
hydrogenas for 64bit apps needing more ram.. one possible reason I can think of is that some of the base data sizes are different on a 64bit system from a 32bit, so more memory gets allocated for the same types (I think?)05:58

Running 1280x800 desktop, on a 1024x768 output.  Ok simple? set the default desktop to 1024x768 and the TV out will follow? CORRECT. until i reboot, and find out that it set my xorg.conf to a DEFAULT of 640x480 for BOTH screens! not a fun resolution to work with. Does an06:39

CrellHi all.  I'm having what I think is a repository issue.  I'm trying to install something through PECL (PHP's binary repository), but the pecl binary doesn't seem to be available.  When I aptitude search for pecl, I don't even see a package for it.  Any idea why that might be?  (Kubuntu Gutsy)06:43

declanAgent_bob: Well, I was thinking maybe it ran as a service so that I could just stop the service and not have wine running.07:37
Agent_bobwine is wine is not an emulator,  wine is an application layer that is used to support windows based application in linux.    wine is normally called something like this    "wine /media/win_c:/my\ program.exe "    when "my program.exe" exits so does wine.07:38
serruchoagent bob you are a pro on this07:39
serruchoyou know a lot07:39

Agent_bobthink of it in the same way as the shell us used for a script.    sh my_script.sh      sh runs to provide a shell for "my_script.sh" to run in.   when  my_script.sh  exits so does sh07:39
Agent_bobperl script might be an even better example    perl my_script.perl        idk.07:41

m00foois this actually a (known?) bug in kde 3.5.8 or only a gutsy problem? i can't change the settings for a (kicker) panel but the "main panel". neither right click "configure panel" let me choose another one nor "systemsettings". The only way to change it is to run kcontrol.  [first one could be a kde bug, second one is definitely a gutsy bug ;-)]10:05

Jucatopanel options in system settings have been gone since edgy or dapper10:08
Jucatoit's not a bug either. an intended behavior of system settings10:08
Jucatoanyway, the easier way to solve that (other than launching kcontrol) is to run this command: dcop kicker kicker restart10:09

geniiapparle: apt-cache search mixer     produces quite a lot of candidates :)14:52
apparleciacon: No . It takes control of the card only for system sounds like logon etc. I played three mp3 files on my pc(amarok, kaffiene, mplayer) simultaneously just for fun. And that also in case of an old box14:54
apparlegenii: i want a mixer which can be controlled by the volume keys of a multimedia keyboard14:55
ciaconI have the feeling, that the sound in KDE is managed by arts - which mixes all the sounds played in KDE and then feeds it to alsa which then again links to the card...14:55
geniiapparle: Then you don't neccesarily want a different mixer but rather to configure the keyboard14:56

NickPrestaNarissa, as far as I know, this is a bug. The kdm theme module doesn't take into consideration a file in /etc/default/kdm.d/23:30
NarissaNick: so I am to assume that any theme's I install or use will be done manually then?23:30
kub^hi, i have a logitech g5 mouse and want to use the side buttons for forward and back in firefox, any clues on where to start ? (gutsy)23:31
NickPrestaNarissa, AFAIK, the kdm module is useless right now. Any themes downloaded from kde-look.org or something similar have to be added manually by editing the file in /etc/default/kdm.d/. Let me see if I can find anything on Launchpad23:32
NarissaNick: kk 8) tyvm for the assist btw23:32
