nealmcbouch - my laptop wouldn't shutdown - something about a read-only filesystem is all I saw, so I had to power it off.  now I get "UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; run fsck manually" - and it is noting a ton of illegal blocks and multiply-claimed blocks.  I haven't seen this sort of thing in years if ever....06:44
nealmcbjournal inodes sharing blockis with defoma font-caches - nasty stuff06:47

dencrypthow do I open ports on my server for ftp-service? I tried doing iptables but it doesn't work, any ideas?11:12
Kamping_Kaiserinstall an ftp service, by default theres nothing blocking ports11:14
dencryptyeah, that's what I thought. I run vsftpd and it is started. But when I do a nmap locally it doesn't specify the port in /etc/vsftpd.conf to be open at all and I can't connect either.11:16
Kamping_Kaiseryou cant telnet to port 20/21?11:17
dencryptnope11:19
* Kamping_Kaiser doesnt do ftp, so cant really comment on setting up a server with it11:19

nealmcbI'm trying to recover a disk by mounting it using a gutsy live cd.  I've gotten to sudo lvscan shows "inactive '/dev/ubuntu/root' [144.88 GB] inherit" and I guess I want to use dmsetup to create a device.16:24
nealmcbfdisk says /dev/sda5 30 19458 156056528 8e Linux LVM.  so do I somehow use those cylinder numbers to create a table for dmsetup create?   or is there a good howto out there?16:24

nealmcbInnatech: thanks!16:42
Innatechno prob. Hope it works!16:42
eldonz I'm trying to install ubuntu-server on a mini-pc with SiS x86 compatible processor but get "No installable kernel was found". Any way around this?17:11
nealmcbInnatech: success - the trick was sudo vgchange -a y    interesting article....17:16
Innatechnealmcb: cool.17:19
InnatechI'll have to try and remember that.17:19
bertokey, I have got a question about ubuntu server17:26
bertwhat are the system requirements for a server17:26
bert???17:26
Innatechfairly modest. What did you have in mind?17:27
bertwell, the problem is, I tried installing ubuntu server a simple LAMP + mail server inside our home network17:28
bertbut when I try to start it (it's already installed) it says that the processor isn't good enough :s17:28
Innatechcan you provide the specific error it gives?17:28
bertI don't remember it and the partitions are already deleted as I misconfigured them and they took up all the rets of the disk17:29
Innatechmm. Well, you might be able to get the system to boot with a cheat-code but without knowing the error its hard to say.17:30
bertshould I reinstall or is a laptop with a celeron processor @ 1.7Ghz just nog powerfull enough ?17:30
Innatechno, that should be fine.17:30
bertthen, I'll just reinstall17:31
bertbut it was very strange17:31
bertthe kernel refused to load :s17:31
InnatechAlthough the mobile chipset might be causing problems.17:31
bertthat's possible17:31
bertbut ATM it's the most powerfull machine I have17:31
bertow yeah, now that I'm here17:32
berthow much diskspace would a ubuntu server installation (LAMP + mailserver + FTP) take ?17:33
=== Owner is now known as nathan42100
nathan42100hey, is anyone here?18:29
infinityNope.18:32
nathan42100Im trying to install 7.10 server on a few Dell PowerEdge servers 2300-2500 series and the installation hangs at 21% libc6-udeb. Any ideas? I cant find anything on the forums as to an answer18:32
infinityIf it stalls in the same spot every time, I'd usually guess it's a bad CD.18:33
nathan42100I have two cds and a CD verification on my laptop (sadly its faster) says its fine18:33
nathan42100many other distros of Linux refuse to install as well, inlcuding the desktop version of Ubunu18:34
Innatechyou can try looking through here....not sure if it will help: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer18:36
nathan42100can't find anything18:40
Innatechthere are a few bugs filed against the installer by laptop users.18:42
danpcan you flip to another vty and see what it says?18:42
danpor does it hang?18:42
nathan42100#1, im installing it on a server, not a laptop, #2 a vty? Im a linux newb right now...18:43
danpif you can't switch vty's once it's hung you might start the installation, switch to the debug vty and wait for it to hang...see if it says anything when it does18:43
Innatechyou could also try an alternate or server install and add packages18:44
nathan42100what is a vty18:44
nathan42100I am trying the server install18:45
Innatech./bonk oh yea18:45
nathan42100what is a vty?18:45
danphttp://linux.about.com/od/linux101/l/blnewbie5_1.htm; once the installation starts you can change terminals/ttys/consoles/whatever18:46
danpon the second one you can get a shell, on 5 and/or 6 i think is debug output from the installer18:46
nathan421002nd terminal I assume18:47
nathan42100how do I get back to the installer?18:47
nathan42100#1?18:47
nathan42100and I assume it works in the installer18:47
danpyeah18:47
nathan42100ok, I think Im gunna print this18:48
nathan42100thanks18:48
nathan42100major problem for future though: 6 servers, a couple switches and hubs and about 20 computers (windowz not linux) without an internet connection because the damn school doesnt trust us18:48
nathan42100sadly, the servers actually aren't required for the course so there isn't a big push to the school tech support guys to install it for us...18:49
nathan42100is the 5th and 6th terminal the same debug output?18:50
nathan42100as far as I can tell it hangs, but then it does eventually show an error about 5 minutes later18:50
nathan42100so I can look at the debug output after the error18:50
nathan42100right danp?18:52
nathan42100danp?18:55
bertsorry, does anyone know what to do with the following kernel panic: "PANIC: CPU too old for this kernel." ???18:57
bert(it's a fresh ubuntu server installation)18:58
nathan42100I would assume that it is exactly what it says...I would get an older version of the server or a newer CPU19:01
bertwell, someone told me here that an intel celeron @ 1.7Ghz should work fine19:02
nathan42100I don't know the actual answer as I am a newb19:02
nathan42100but try with an older installaton19:02
nathan42100hang on19:03
bertokey19:03
nathan42100yeah, according to the website a celeron should work19:03
nathan42100how old is the computer?19:03
bert3 or 4 years old I think19:04
bertmaximum19:04
danpnathan42100, i think you should switch to the debug console as soon as the installation starts to see what it's doing19:05
nathan42100danp: wouldn't I still have to enter configuation things the first few steps?19:05
nathan42100oh, neverming19:05
bertokey, so you mean that dapper perhaps would work ?19:07
danpbert, it's weird you're getting that error. i have edgy server running on an oooold compaq PC with a 500MHz celeron here at home19:09
bertwell, I think it's odd too19:09
bertbut it's perhaps because I run it on a laptop19:09
bertchipset error perhaps ?19:09
danpmaybe19:09
bertbut how do I fix that ?19:09
danpsee if the desktop version boots and works. maybe it needs the generic kernel instead of server. you could probably use the alternate install if that's the case19:10
bertwell, the generic kernel works fine19:10
danpdo you get that error when you're booting it after installing?19:11
bertso you mean I have to install using the alternate CD and then just delete all the desktop packages ?19:11
danpor when you're trying to boot the installation from CD in the first place?19:11
bertthe installation CD boots fine19:11
bertbut I can't get it started after the installation19:12
danpok, you're able to boot the server install CD and do the installation...it's just the first boot that has trouble19:12
danpright, so...what you can do is, after the installation reboots, boot the CD again and go into rescue mode19:12
danpwhen you install, are you just using one big / partition/filesystem?19:13
bertyes one / partiton19:14
bert*partition19:14
bertbut I could easily splitt it19:14
bertI have plenty of space left19:15
danpthat's fine, that makes it easier for this19:15
bertokey19:15
danponce you boot into rescue mode you'll eventually get an option to start a shell19:15
bertaah, okey19:16
danppick your / partition, probably /dev/hda119:16
danpthen do: apt-get install linux-image-generic19:16
bertdo you mean booting from the kernel's rescue line ?19:16
bert*server's19:16
danpyeah, from the server installation CD19:17
bertaaah19:17
bertokey19:17
danpit might be a menu option now, too19:17
nathan42100what exactly does apt-get do?19:17
bertso I should pick rescue a broken system from the menu, right ?19:18
danpyeah19:18
danpnathan42100: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/19:19
nathan42100so its basically just a commandline simple package manager?19:21
bertwell nathan, synaptic and kpackage are just graphical front-ends to apt-get ;)19:22
nathan42100...never used linux really, maybe a total of about 20 hours a few years ago19:23
nathan42100http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=82017 <-- im not the only one...the problem has been happening for a couple of versions19:23
bertdanp, is it normal that the rescue thing takes very long to load ?19:23
danpi guess...it should take about the same amount of time as booting the installation19:26
bertwell, it is taking a lot more ATM19:26
nathan42100danp, should I try putting "cdrom_hdparm=-d1" at the boot parameters?19:27
danpi think you should19:28
nathan42100(see the thread, 2nd to last post)19:28
nathan42100ok19:28
nathan42100I can't do it know19:28
nathan42100now*19:28
nathan42100servers are at school19:28
nathan42100since it is the server CD, do I need the live and the cdrom-detect as well?19:30
nathan42100danp?19:30
nathan42100danp, interesting. This person tried 6.061 and it worked, but no other version did: http://www.vinnia.se/2007/05/08/install-ubuntu-704-on-a-dell-poweredge-2450-server/19:34
