ojwb | Hi - I'm putting together a computer from spare parts for my neighbour's ~6 year old kid, and edubuntu seems a good choice for the OS. Looking at the wiki, I can find suggested hardware requirements for thin clients and servers for LTSP, but not for a standalone machine - any idea what it will run on? | 12:41 |
ojwb | or is it just the same as ubuntu for that case? does it use gnome for the desktop? | 12:42 |
RichEd | ojwb: same as ubuntu ... and yes GNOME | 12:46 |
RichEd | but it also has kde apps | 12:46 |
ojwb | sure, I was meaning "rather than being based on xubuntu" really | 12:49 |
RichEd | yep ... edbuntu is more or less ubuntu with an edubuntu-desktop package on top ... additional education applications, younger/simpler look & feel | 12:50 |
steph_ | bonjour à tous | 16:08 |
steph_ | le channel est français ou anglais | 16:08 |
ogra | english, even though i think some here would understand french | 16:09 |
steph_ | ok. First of all, I'm a newbie to edubuntu. | 16:10 |
steph_ | hep you won another soldier :) | 16:10 |
steph_ | i put a wallpaper in /usr/share/backgroud | 16:10 |
steph_ | i would like al; my users to see it | 16:11 |
steph_ | here is what i don't understand: | 16:11 |
steph_ | when i'm logon as a user, i see images in /usr/share/background | 16:12 |
steph_ | but not the one i added ? | 16:12 |
steph_ | if you can help me to understand how an admin can setup edubuntu for all users | 16:13 |
steph_ | (I have 5 childrem...kind of a admin lol) | 16:14 |
steph_ | childrens | 16:14 |
stgraber | I'm not sure how gnome works on that point, but there is certainly some kind of .xml file storing the list of available wallpapers | 16:14 |
steph_ | in the /home/user ? | 16:15 |
steph_ | so i had to find that file, and mv to all other users ? | 16:16 |
ogra | have a look at /usr/share/gconf/defaults/20-edubuntu | 16:16 |
steph_ | what if users have personnal settings? | 16:16 |
steph_ | ok | 16:16 |
ogra | create your own file in that dir with a higher number | 16:16 |
ogra | and set the background like in the ubuntu file but with your own image | 16:16 |
ogra | the higher number will make the settings you put in that file overrule all others | 16:17 |
ogra | dont change the edubuntu file, that gets overwritten on updates | 16:17 |
steph_ | another question (maybe stupid). Why /usr/share/gconf/defaults/20-edubuntu has a symbolic link. Would it be easier to have only one file. Is it common in *nix systems ? | 16:22 |
Petaris | Hi all | 16:23 |
Petaris | I am trying to debug a thin client issue but it seems to be ignoring my SCREEN_02=shell in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf | 16:26 |
Petaris | any ideas | 16:26 |
ogra | paste your lts.conf to a pastebin | 16:28 |
Petaris | its just two lines | 16:28 |
Petaris | the version and the SCREEN_02=shell | 16:28 |
Petaris | sec | 16:29 |
Petaris_Aki | ogra: http://phpfi.com/281449 | 16:30 |
ogra | looks fine | 16:30 |
Petaris | *three lines | 16:30 |
ogra | you can drop the version var btw | 16:30 |
Petaris | ok | 16:30 |
Petaris | didn't know if it was required or not | 16:31 |
ogra | its just a placeholder for the default file ... getltscfg would moan if it fineds the file empty | 16:31 |
Petaris | ahh | 16:31 |
Petaris | so why am I not getting a shell on tty2? | 16:32 |
ogra | what happens exactly when you boot | 16:32 |
ogra | you get a normal X login ? or is it stuck at the first console ? | 16:32 |
Petaris | it grabs the DHCP, the image, gives me the Ubuntu boot screen then goes to a black screen | 16:33 |
Petaris | x doesn't start | 16:33 |
Petaris | thats what I am trying to diagnose | 16:33 |
ogra | and alt-f2 doesnt get you to a terminal ? | 16:33 |
Petaris | I need the shell to see what the graphics chipset is | 16:33 |
Petaris | nope | 16:33 |
Petaris | just a blank screen | 16:33 |
Petaris | tty1 has the login on it | 16:33 |
Petaris | but thats disabled right? | 16:34 |
ogra | thats gutsy ? | 16:34 |
Petaris | yeah | 16:34 |
Petaris | 7.10 | 16:34 |
ogra | you can enable it with: sudo /opt/ltsp/i386 passwd && sudo ltsp-update-image | 16:34 |
ogra | that enables the root login | 16:34 |
Petaris | ok | 16:35 |
stgraber | ogra: s/sudo/sudo chroot/ ? | 16:35 |
ogra | oh, right | 16:35 |
Petaris | still I wonder why I am not getting the shell | 16:35 |
ogra | thanks for pointing | 16:35 |
* ogra is in a meeting alongside | 16:35 | |
Petaris | ok, thanks for the instructions ogra | 16:37 |
Petaris | where in proc should I look to find the video chipset? | 16:45 |
johnny | i had a problem where if the desktop failed to come up properly | 16:53 |
johnny | like the autolgin bug, i couldn't move over to the the screen 2 | 16:54 |
Petaris | hrm | 16:55 |
Petaris | maybe similar | 16:57 |
Petaris | but I can't tell for sure | 16:57 |
bddebian | Heya | 17:19 |

Petaris | Does anyone know if there is LTSP client support for the AMD Geode LX800 chipset | 17:59 |
Petaris | ? | 17:59 |
Petaris | Specifically graphics support | 18:00 |
Goosemoose | wow, too quiet in here todya! | 18:08 |
Goosemoose | today | 18:08 |
Petaris | yeah | 18:10 |
Petaris | Goosemoose: I don't suppose you know if there is support for AMD Geode LX800 Graphics chipsets? | 18:10 |
Petaris | I thought I saw something in the handbook but now I can't find it | 18:13 |
Petaris | ahh, it was on ltsp.org's site | 18:17 |
Petaris | ahh | 18:19 |
Goosemoose | unfortunately no | 18:19 |
Petaris | maybe the nsc driver is what I need | 18:19 |
Petaris | apparently nsc only supports the older GX1 and GX2 chipsets | 18:29 |
Petaris | :( | 18:29 |
Goosemoose | anyone using preseed with edubuntu? | 19:28 |
Goosemoose | anyone using preseed with edubuntu? | 20:34 |
das-t | sorry, not yet | 20:37 |
Goosemoose | ok, having problems with the pressed file | 20:44 |
das-t | i read so, but unfortunately i do not have a solution too. tried preseeding once with sarge, but did not succeed at that time. hat too little time to look into it. | 20:45 |
das-t | ok, good night everybody | 21:54 |
lns | das-t, night?? it's 2:00pm here in cali. ;) | 22:02 |

lns | joebob777as7, not too bad anymore. ;) | 22:15 |
Goosemoose | anyone see something wrong with this line: tasksel tasksel/first multiselect ubuntu-minimal,ubuntu-standard,ubuntu-desktop | 22:53 |
