smithwHello everyone. Today I upgraded two different computers from kubuntu feisty to kubuntu gutsy and they both resulted in problems, so I'm quite sad on kubuntu right now. The computer I'm trying to fix now had its wifi stop working after the upgrade. before the upgrade, I did a few hacks to make it work in the first place (http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/47765/ ). Now, iwpriv complains the "set" command is not recognized and it doesn't connect00:04
smithw correctly. Trying "iwpriv ra0" reveals the interface now supports the "param" command, but when I tried to make the substitutions, it changes errors and say the operation is not permitted. I tried iwconfig and was also unsuccessful. Any ideas on how can I make this network connect?00:04

marx2kOk, so moving onto Amarok, then...00:26
NickPrestamarx2k, which streams won't Amarok play?00:26
marx2keven when I select the shoutcast streams in its' default Streaming Media list, it says 'Could not connect to host http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/newxml.phtml"00:26
marx2kit will not play shoutcast streams00:26
marx2kfurthermore, if I am playing an mp3, and click on the 'artist' tab, it tells me "Artist information could not be retrieved because the server was not reachable."00:27
marx2kso Amarok alone is having net connectivity issues but I am not sure why that would be00:28
NickPrestamarx2k, try to locate the .pls file. Amarok doesn't have the raw XML file, apparently. Use XMMS if you must use that URI. As for the Artist thing, no idea. Works fine on my end00:28
marx2kWhere is default config for amarok stored?00:29
NickPrestamarx2k, ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc00:30
NickPrestaand I meant Amarok doesn't _like_ the raw XML file, apparently.00:30
marx2kI used to be able to just throw it in there00:30
marx2klet me try removing Amarok config and see if that works00:30
NickPrestaI doubt that would help but I suppose it is worth a shot..00:31
marx2knope..didnt work00:32
marx2kthough the lyrics download works just fine00:32
marx2kwhen I try to install new scripts into Amarok, it also tells me: Could not connect to host http://amarok.kde.org/knewstuff/amarokscripts-providers.xml.00:34

rysiek|plardchoille: no worries, I won't come back crying, I am able to fix my system myself if I b0rk something ;)01:49
ardchoillerysiek|pl: lol, the trick is to not b0rk it :)01:49

rysiek|plardchoille: yeah, that's just what I said in the first place ;)01:51
ardchoillerysiek|pl: Ah, right01:51
MinatakuI believe the "vga" boot option is dependent on the kernel using the vesafb driver01:51
rysiek|plany news if/when are they going to open-source launchpad?01:52
MinatakuIt may not function if the kernel has autoprobed the card and is using a specific driver01:52
MinatakuI have this exact issue with Piyoko01:52
MinatakuIf the kernel detects the card and tries to use tridentfb, I get completely unusable video01:52
MinatakuI fixed this by compiling in nothing but vesafb, but I believe there's a way to force the driver for prebuilt kernels with multiple modules01:53
rysiek|plMinataku: I *think* there is a way by using kopts01:53
ardchoilleMinataku: Yes, iirc, it was a problem with the video driver and kernel01:53

* rysiek|pl splashes ardchoille with some whater01:54

rysiek|plthat must have been a pretty hard slap01:54
ardchoilleWell, I had nvidia drivers working in Feisty and vga=791 working in menu.lst, it junst doesn't work in gutsy01:54
MinatakuYeah, I just use vesafb because tridentfb fails on my machine01:55
rysiek|plardchoille: samey-samey here01:55
MinatakuVESA is the first fallback, if the specific driver fails, the VESA driver will usually work, provided the card supports VESA, which pretty much all PC video adapters do01:56
MinatakuVESA is still quite capable, however, in the event that it fails as well, the last fallback is VGA01:57
MinatakuWhich has capabilities reaching just far enough to provide one with video and nothing more01:57
MinatakuIf THAT fails, there's always the serial port... maybe.01:58

skyi'm new to kubuntu03:18
skyrunning into problems already03:18
skywas wondering if someone could give me some tips.03:19
skyafter installing 7.10, i see that adept manager found some upgradable components, so I went ahead and try to upgrade them03:19
ardchoillesky: We'll need to know what you need heolp with03:19
skyafter it successfully downloads all the selected components, it starts installing them, but there were some errors03:19
skyand then there was a pop up from adept mgr saying that there was an error installing or downloading the updates, the only button to click was "OK"03:20
skyso I wanted to give it another try, because it obviously did not finish installing every update.03:21
skybut then when I go through the same "fetch updates" it found 0 upgradable.03:21
skynow I'm worried that the DB indicates everything is updated when in fact that's not the case.03:21
skybut i'm sure the designers are not so stupid to mark the DB to indicate the upgrade was successful before the actual update.  So I was wondering, how do I find out what the error was and how do I continue to upgrade?03:22
sky(in fact the same happened when i tried to upgrade another machine from 7.0? to 7.1... so I don't know what packages are successfully upgraded and which are not)03:23
mikesssafer from #terminal03:24
ardchoillesky: I would open a terminal and type: sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade03:24

mox69shin: you might run into a problem when uninstalling xubuntu that it will unstill a bunch of necessary libraries06:05
acee1235vlc won't play dvd's any idea06:05
shinikaruswitched to kubuntu by installing kubuntu-desktop06:05
loaxxman vlc06:05
shinikaruthen i decided to try xubuntu by installing xubuntu-desktop06:05
shinikaruand now everything os broken :(06:05
loaxxin it it shows the vlc options to choose dvd region and codec06:05
mox69shin: hehe smooth :)06:06
mox69not sure how to fix that, besides unstalling all of that and a fresh reinstall06:06
shinikaruwhich sucks because I spent about two full days configuring kde.06:06
intelikeyshinikaru dereferanced symbolic links are normally caused by either a backup/restore that dereferances them or a copy process that doesn't preserve links.06:06

KevinAlaskaAnyone know if ubuntu can setup an x-window based or GUI type 'dumb terminal' that can do things like email and web based applications?06:09
intelikeyKevinAlaska why gui based if it's a dumb terminal ?06:10
intelikeyand yes it can.   i just don't see a use for such.06:10
KevinAlaskawell I know the traditional use for 'dumb terminal' would be text based,  I just have a need of putting something like that in my kitchen if its possible.06:11

KevinAlaskaintelikey - I am just in need of a GUI type of dumb terminal in my kitchen if it is possible... only room for a monitor etc just no place for a case... :(  besides sounds like a fun project to learn if there is a possible way.06:15

loaxxgui type of dumb terminal06:19
loaxxwhats ur definition of terminal?06:19
KevinAlaskayeah... I plan to have a server setup for the home but I could get use out of it hopefully in a way to maybe setup a X window type dumb terminal if possible.06:20
acee1235is there  no basic guide for ubuntu on setting up vlc?06:20
loaxxterminal != console06:20
KevinAlaskawell dumb terminals are usually text based that have min of keyboard and a monitor ... am I correct? :(06:20
loaxxterminal = a place to type commands, like a cli06:21
loaxxconsole = computer to be used06:21
KevinAlaskaoh.. that are hooked up over a network to a server06:21
loaxxyou want a command line prompt in your kitchen?06:21
KevinAlaskano sorry.. looking to setup somethign to check email and surf hopefully.. :/06:21
loaxxyea ok06:21
loaxxthats easy06:21
KevinAlaskareally?! :)06:22
loaxxyou can add a user, that only has access to the browser, the email program06:22
loaxxyou can make it so, that user, when logged in, has the browser automatically load06:22
loaxxand cannot be cloased06:22
loaxxand any other programs you want you can give them06:22
KevinAlaskabut no place for a CPU case.. where I can place it.06:22
loaxxor just give it  few desktop links06:22
loaxxone of those perhaps being a cooking recipe program06:23
KevinAlaskalol. yep. :)06:23
loaxxtheres somethign called microATX06:23
loaxxand you can put it in a cabinet06:23
KevinAlaskaMB right06:23
loaxxyea mobo06:23
loaxxthey just small and use less power06:23
loaxxget a weak processor06:23
loaxxget like 1 gig of ram06:23
KevinAlaskaI know.. also shuttles etc.. I know.  Just wanting to keep down cost and space in cabnets are hard to find in the kitchen06:24
KevinAlaska:) its mostly a space issue really. =/06:24
loaxxyou can hook the monitor and keyboard up with super long cables to a kvm switch06:24
loaxxso its just the monitor mounted and keyboard somewhere06:24
loaxxa mouse06:24
loaxxwith a on screen keyboard06:24
KevinAlaskaahh.. true.06:24
loaxxvga/kvm switches are dirt cheap and plug and play06:25
KevinAlaskaI have seen KVM cables at least 25 feet.. thinking 50 feet.06:25
loaxxorrrrrr you can use a touch screen06:25
crazy_buskonqueror displays everything as a list view.  I set it as icon view but it just goes back when I close the window.  How do I make it stay?06:25
KevinAlaskathought about that... we use those at work for our clients06:26
loaxxyea i used em at work too.06:26
KevinAlaskaelo touch screens.. heavy little things06:26
loaxxyou ever mount a monitor06:26
loaxxwith a metal arm?06:26
KevinAlaskano but to a wall flush mount yes06:27
KevinAlaskatv with a swing arm in my parents old house06:27
loaxxsame principle but you have an arm to extend it out with06:27
loaxxmounts in the same spots06:28
XceIIwhy not a cordless keyboard and a lcd monitor06:28
XceIIJust a thought06:28
KevinAlaskaI have a small older LCD to use...06:28
loaxxim sure one could imagine so many pros and cons to having the keyboard in the kitchen or not06:29
loaxxand t depends on the size of your kitchn06:29
KevinAlaskacordless is a good idea... I could perchance run a vga extension long enough maybe06:29
loaxxand your kitchen habits06:29
KevinAlaskanot that big.. bigger then some I think but not much06:29
loaxxin my house, that shit would get coverd in booze and god knows what else in no time06:29
KevinAlaskaso plastic coat them. :)06:29
XceIInever seen a drunk kee bord06:29
XceIImaybe just a cordless mouse then06:30
KevinAlaskanot sure.. seen drunks do lots of dumb things in my time though. :)06:30

emilsedghlorddarkpat_: i think most people are gutsy, and hardy will not have kde4 as defafult16:20
lorddarkpat_WHY??????? I want KDE4(crying)16:21

lorddarkpat_deuryte:Just go to K-menu>System Settings>Advanced>Restricted Drivers16:23
deuryteif i go look and see if they are in. and it says i dont need them.  what do i do then??16:24
deurytei think i accessed that , to see if there was any there, it said i didnt need them16:25
lorddarkpat_deuryte:That probably means that either the modem is already installed, or Kubuntu hasn't recognised it yet16:25
lorddarkpat_deuryte:Ok, go to K-Menu>Internet>KPPP and see if u can connect16:25

smcintyreriot: Ah ok :)16:59
smcintyreriot: Shuld be possible. I think16:59
smcintyrearekm: What did you do?17:01
arekmsmcintyre: upgraded all packages one by one before gutsy. When gutsy was released then adept started showing new button like "upgrade to new distro version"17:02
arekmsmcintyre: and that upgrade to new version fails because it says that there is no newer packages17:02
smcintyrearekm: That's a bug. Sorry for the scare :)17:02

arekmsmcintyre: how to workaround?17:03
