ari_stressmorning all :D01:06
FW_SquatchNew guy here.  I was wondering everyone's thoughts on what are the advantages of using edubuntu instead of plain old ubuntu?01:14
kgoetzdepends on the target audicence, and what you want to use it for01:15
FW_SquatchI teach 8th grade computer classes.  I was wondering how I could sell Linux to my Tech Dept01:15
FW_SquatchMy class teaches basic productivity stuff like MS OFfice suite and some photo editing01:15
kgoetzi'd go with ubuntu, based on my 6.06 experiance with edubuntu, but not tried any recent version (dont know if its less 'primary' feeling)01:16
kgoetzbrb 2 min01:16
Dante123Hi All!  Where is a good place to discuss educational software ideas with programmers?01:20
Dante123Opensource of course!01:21
FW_SquatchWish I could help.  I have no idea.01:21
* kgoetz isnt sure01:21
* ari_stress is not a programmer 01:22
ari_stressFW_Squatch: have u tried ltsp with plain ubuntu?01:23
HedgeMageDante123:  I can knock some ideas about with you if you'd like -- there is unfortunately not a general forum I'm aware from for edu software01:23
kgoetzDante123: are you ater someone to develope something, or just to kick idaas around?01:23
ari_stresshello ogra, u there?01:23
FW_Squatchno, I have not.  I've only run ubuntu at home for my normal desktop.  I haven't gotten a chance to do anything with it at work yet.01:23
kgoetz'dead easy' springs to mind (at least it was 18 moths ago !)01:24
ari_stresswell, i have tried it and generally it's ok. but, i'm having trouble setting up student control panel with ldap01:24
ari_stressusing local users works wonderfully though01:25
ari_stressi'm trying edubuntu now. they say it has student-control-panel pre-installed01:25
Dante123Hi guys...I have an idea that I developed with a friend using Hypercard on mac....I am a teacher and still use some of the worksheets and activities I made on the original program with my students....however...I'd like to see the idea updated to run on linux....or perhaps be web-based...so teachers, students, and parents could use it01:28
kgoetzwhat is hypercard?01:28
Dante123An old program that ran on the older Macintoshes....01:28
kgoetzthat does what? :|01:28
ari_stressDante123: some kind of memory training?01:28
Dante123Its for spelling instructions....uses word families....and activities to help students learn and remember proper english spelling.....could be applied to other languages too though.01:28
Dante123Spelling instruction i mean01:29
ari_stressDante123: i think i remember similar program in linux01:29
ari_stresskvoctrain, something like that, from KDE01:29
Dante123Well, I have some sample activity pages in pdf format to give a better idea?01:31
ari_stressi'd love to see that :)01:31
Dante123see if this link works (I was getting some bulgarian educational types to help work on it...but they haven't done much- still in school themselves...here is the link:  http://spellinator.edudev.org/attachment/ticket/2/spellinator.pdf01:32
ari_stressok01:32
Dante123ari_stress are you there?01:47
Dante123Did you see the file?01:47
Dante123Here is the main activity I'd like to see programmed first:  Create a box where the user can enter 15 words that are then used to create a series of "boxes" using squares and rectangles to represent the words. i.e. cat would be two squares and one rectangle01:47
ari_stressDante123: yes, sorry i went to another room. just got back01:53
Dante123no prob02:00
ari_stressstill downloading02:02
ari_stressthe internet in my country is soooooo slow02:03
ari_stresshas anyone tried thin client manager with ldap?02:08
kgoetzari_stress: where are you located?02:08
ari_stresssouth east asia, indonesia02:09
kgoetzah right02:11
kgoetzafk. lunch02:11
* kgoetz waves from .au02:11
ari_stresshello neighbor :D02:12
Dante123ari_stress the bulgarian site that file is on is SLOW too....so it isn't just your country02:38
ari_stressDante123: i've just finished downloading it02:39
ari_stresslooks good02:40
ari_stresshow do we use it?02:40
ari_stressyou said it's for kids of how old?02:40
Dante123well....the teacher selects words....that have a pattern or rule they follow....then the program creates activities with the words.  The word boxes activity is very visual and helps students see the shape of the word and help visual memory.  The program produced strictly printed pages....I'd like to see it be online app with drag and drop etc. to match words with their shape etc.02:42
Dante123but I would like to see printable pages as part of it too....so that students or parents can print a hard copy for later practice.02:43
ari_stressyes i notice the shape of the boxes :D nice hints.02:45
ari_stressthe drag and drop can be achieved using flash apps02:45
ari_stressbut the printing version... i'm not so sure, might need another apps02:45
ari_stressor the flash programmer can create a menu to print it02:46
Dante123yes,  believe me if you had a website where the teacher could choose 10-20 words and the students would then complete this activity online or teacher prints a copy....traffic would start coming to your site....help with google ad dollars02:48
ari_stresshow about using moodle?02:49
ari_stressit's a very good online learning tool02:49
ari_stresswww.moodle.org02:50
Dante123I use moodle with my students...but I don't know how this would fit in.  I think this needs to be flash based or something...02:50
Dante123Start with online app version (printable can wait)....teacher enters say 15 words that fit a pattern and the program makes the word boxes activity, the missing letters, alphabetic order, syllables etc.02:51
Dante123student then go on and complete the activities the teacher gave them....maybe the program records a score......I guess moodle could do some of that...but I'm not sure how.02:51
ari_stressDante123: after some thoughts..02:54
ari_stressi think we can ask a programmer to make a dynamic flash program02:54
ari_stressso that teacher can define what words to use02:54
ari_stressthen the program will generate the layout/problems02:54
ari_stresswhat do u think?02:54
Dante123that sounds about right.02:55
Dante123I have many word lists that have examples of word families....already typed and used in the prototype program.....a screen could come up and the teacher scrolls through the list looking for words that fit patterns etc.02:56
ari_stressyes02:57
ari_stresswe can put those words into the database, and then we can use them for the lesson02:57
Dante123yes02:57
ace_suaresDante123: interesting idea02:59
ace_suaresyou could create an account on launchpad.net02:59
ace_suaresand start a blueprint02:59
ace_suaresdescribe your idea02:59
ace_suaresmaybe some people will chime in02:59
ace_suaresin any case you can point some people to the spec03:00
ari_stressthat's a good idea03:02
ace_suaresari_stress: you can install thin-client-manager in ubuntu03:03
Dante123is launchpad net...free...open source place03:03
Dante123it is the ubuntu idea place right?03:03
ace_suaresDante123: just have a look and then ask that question again ?03:03
ace_suaresari_stress: student-control-panel is now thin-client-manager03:04
ace_suaresbut you still start it with 'student-control-panel'03:04
ace_suaresapt-get install thin-client-manager-gnome03:05
ace_suaresbut works in kde too.03:05
ari_stressace_suares: yes i have installed it03:06
ari_stressit works ok with local user (/etc/passwd), but with ldap users, it cannot see them03:06
ace_suaresso working with ldap is the prolem03:06
ari_stressi havent found the workaround03:06
ace_suaresproblem03:06
ari_stressyes03:06
ace_suaresmaybe there is no support for htat03:06
ace_suareslook at the code :-003:06
Dante123do I just select register a blueprint and start putting my idea up that way?03:06
ari_stressthe worst case scenario i guess03:06
ace_suaresDante123: first make an account and then yes, register a bluprint03:07
ace_suaresfirst read a coupe of blueprints please03:07
ace_suaresmind that you're not making an 'ubuntu' bueprint03:07
ace_suaresyou're just using launchpad to make your own blueprint03:07
ace_suaresthat might one day get into ubuntu03:07
ace_suareswho know03:07
ace_suareswho knows :-)03:07
ace_suaresari_stress: you can mail ogra too03:08
ace_suaresjust go to his launchpad page and find the email address03:09
ace_suareshe's not been here for a couple of days I think he is in spain or something03:09
ari_stressi have emailed the ltsp-discuss list. havent tried directly to ogra though03:09
ari_stressoh03:09
ari_stressok :D03:09
ari_stressnice to hear that he's on holiday03:09
ace_suaresand on the ltsp channel, you can sk the bot :_)03:09
ace_suaresjust use !seen user like: !seen ogra03:09
ace_suarestry it :-)03:10
ace_suaresari_stress: probably not on holiday, something with guadarelinux or something03:10
ace_suareslarge, very large spanish distro03:10
ari_stressi see03:10
ari_stressso much about linux i haven't heard of03:10
ari_stressneed to learn a lot03:11
ace_suaresari_stress: ane keep on learning forever since it's going so fast no one can keep up :-)03:11
ace_suaresDante123: waht are the long and short boxes to mean ?03:13
ace_suaresDante123: you should make your pdf smaller, just put the images in the GIMP or some other photeditor and convert them to greyscale03:13
ace_suaresand then scale them to 800 pixels wide (leave the height to be calculated automagically)03:14
ace_suaresand then make gif's of it or png or jpg.03:14
ace_suaresWill eb not more then 40 k per page !!!!!03:14
Dante123okay...will use the gimp....03:39
Dante123the letters like l k t are the rectangles...and letters like s a c e are squares...and p y g are rectangles that go below the squares...visual activity03:40
Dante123so the word cat would be two squares and a rectangle going above the squares.03:41
Dante123gotta go to be now...take care03:42
Dante123got to go to bed I mean...nite03:43

jthomasHas anyone experience with installing and using KDE (kde-base) on Edubuntu?  Does it work well?  Any suggestions or tips?  Any reason not to do so?14:56
RichEdjthomas: what are you trying to acheive ? use KDE apps on Edubuntu, or Edubuntu apps on KDE15:12
jthomasI want to achive a KDE Desktop15:14
RichEdjthomas: then as far as I know, you can start with a Kubuntu install, and then install the edubuntu applications package ... let me check that quickly15:15
jthomasI also read about the edubuntu-desktop-kde package15:16
jthomasI am sure your approach would work, or this meta-package if available.15:16
jthomasbut I want to avoid a lot of the Kubuntu packages and installing Edubuntu seems to be the best way to get education apps and games, and then kde-base to get the basic KDE on top...15:17
RichEdogra: you around ?15:19
RichEdjthomas: the best people to give advice on this would be: ogra (edubuntu) or Riddell (kubuntu) ... neither seem to be around at the moment15:24
RichEdperhaps send a post to edubuntu-devel and edubuntu-users ?15:24
jthomasWell... I have to go out of the office for a while, so we'll just see if anyone pipes up in the next few hours.  Otherwise, I'll just try it out!15:26
jthomasthere is an 'edubuntu-desktop-kde' package15:27
jthomasthanks!15:27
Riddelledubuntu-desktop-kde would be the best way to get a KDE desktop with edu apps15:28
RichEdthanks Riddell :)15:30
