ubotuLaunchpad bug 111555 in gstreamer "totem/gstreamer cannot play midi files" [Undecided,Confirmed]11:01
markvandenborrethere's an upstream source package for gstreamer-plugins-bad that includes midi support11:02
markvandenborresince before gutsy now11:02
markvandenborresoftware midi playback support in gstreamer is perfectly possible, it's just not packaged11:03
markvandenborreshould I file a new bug about that?11:04
markvandenborrethe information is already present in #111555, it's just hidden very deep11:04
markvandenborrein the comments11:04
DarkMageZmarkvandenborre, ask slomo about it.11:04

markvandenborresorry for taking your time11:20

markvandenborrethe bug speaks of totem, but gstreamer-plugins0.10-bad should really be fixed first11:21

pochumarkvandenborre: as long as you have assigned it to the right package..11:26
markvandenborrepochu, so I should just edit subject and text of the existing one?11:27
pochuYes.11:28
markvandenborreit feels a bit awkward that this is even possible11:28

markvandenborreah, k11:29
pochuAnd the changes will be recorded in the activity11:29
pochumarkvandenborre: someone said the support is in -base? Is that true? if so, it should be assigned to -base and not to -bad.11:30
markvandenborrepochu, I saw it was in -bad11:31

slomomarkvandenborre: needs someone to package timidity or wildmidi, then i'll include the midi plugin in gst-plugins-bad13:02
persiaslomo: What needs to be done to timidity?  I'd be happy to take a look.13:02
slomopersia: well, it needs to be packaged so we have headers, a shared library, etc... everything that the gstreamer plugin needs13:03
persiaslomo: Essentially, split the library out into libtimidity then?13:04
* persia doesn't know much about gstreamer, but has previously played with timidity code13:04
slomopersia: probably, i don't know anything about timidity13:05
slomopersia: maybe take a look yourself in the gst-plugins-bad sources :)13:05
persiaheh.13:05
markvandenborreslomo, timidity is packaged right?13:05
persiaI'll take a look at gst-plugins-bad, and see if I can figure out what's needed (although maybe not tonight) :)13:05
markvandenborreah, sorry13:06
persiamarkvandenborre: Yes, packaged, but no, not in a way that provides a separate library.13:06
markvandenborreyeah, sorry, just answered too quickly, read slomo's first comment13:06
markvandenborrein any case, you can't expect a non-geek musician to use ubuntu without out of the box midi support, so this should probably be priority high13:07
persiamarkvandenborre: If you want to play with the code, please don't wait on me.  I'm interested in solving the midi-doesn't-work-by-default issue, but am currently mostly chasing bug #16372713:07
ubotuLaunchpad bug 163727 in timidity "soundfont does not seem to get automatically installed" [Low,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/16372713:07
markvandenborrepersia, that's obviously more high priority13:08
markvandenborrestrange13:08
persiaEven with a working timidity plugin in gst-plugins-bad, I'm not convinced that freepats is sufficiently high quality to be worth it.13:09
markvandenborrecan't remember having had that prop13:09
markvandenborrepersia, that's part of a chicken and egg problem13:09
markvandenborreit will attract more attention to midi quality13:09
