Ahmuckwhat version of server do i need for a "list of server types" such as ltsp, dns, dhcp, etc. to install?03:03
somerville32Ahmuck, say again? :S03:09
Ahmucksomewhere i booted a ubuntu-server disc, and at some point was presented with a menu to install and it had dhcp, dns, etc. on the menu03:13
* somerville32 nods.03:13
Ahmucki've been combing my ubuntu-server, alternate, etc. to find that menu03:13
Ahmuckbut i can't find it on any install, i must be missing a step03:14
mralphabetAhmuck: you are looking for task select03:18
Ahmuckmralphabet: nope, i'm looking for a install menu for which type of server to install, dhcp, dns, ltsp, etc.03:19
Ahmuckas dedicated servers03:19
mralphabetAhmuck: see my previous comment03:20
mralphabetAhmuck: sudo tasksel list03:20
Ahmuckhrm, guess i'm lost03:20
mralphabetAhmuck: sudo tasksel install mail-server03:20
mralphabetetc03:20
Ahmuckwhen my current vm install is complete, i'll boot another and look again03:21
Ahmuckah, once the server is installed?03:21
mralphabetthat "usually" pops up during the actual install from a server install disk03:21
Ahmuckor command line install03:21
mralphabetbut you can force the issue from command line once you have the base server installed03:22
Ahmuckah, i'll bet i saw it on JeOS install.  i'll have to check.  iirc, ubuntu server won't run under vbox because of some PAE thingy03:22
mralphabetalso, 7.04 only has a couple tasks, 7.10 has several more03:22
Ahmuckya, that's what i'm after, that's why i noticed it.  7.10 had lots.  so your saying this should pop up on it's own?03:23
mralphabetthat is quite possible, the jeos installer has even more options I believe03:23
mralphabeton the standard server install cd, it should, i believe03:23
mralphabetI haven't actually gone through a 7.10 install ;(03:24
Ahmuckya, hrm, i'm not getting it for some reason03:24
mralphabetit did on 7.06 when i did that install03:24
mralphabetbut as I said, once you get something running, just do 'sudo tasksel list' and you can choose options from there03:25
nealmcbI don't remember tasksel being part of a jeos install, but it is part of a server install03:26
mralphabetnealmcb: ahh, sorry for my misunderstanding ;(03:27
nealmcbbut I forget when it comes or if it depends on something else03:27
Ahmucknealmcb: really, for some reason it is not starting for me and i dont' understand why03:28
Ahmuckah, i think i know.  rather than reboot, esc, then a tasklist is presented03:29
Ahmuckhrm, i'll see in about 10 min03:29
Ahmuckah, nm, there is is03:33
Ahmuckat the end03:33
Ahmuckubuntu ume, or mobile and embeded is a small footprint?03:45
Ahmucklinux-ubuntu-modules.x.x.xx.-server is a server module?03:48
Ahmuckin ubuntu-server if i select lvm the first time, and then have to do a re-install (testing) and attempt to do lvm the second time i get an error.  this bug is repeatable.  it forces me to select "entire disk" rather than "entire disk with LVM" on the second round04:00
Ahmucktasksel is not part of JeOS install04:17
Ahmuckif i backup my aptoncd, i can set it as a priority for downloads for apt?04:26
mralphabetAhmuck: I believe so, you can edit the sources.list04:27
Ahmuckk, i think i've tried that before, but i'll try again04:27
Ahmucki usually just create an iso and mount it in the vbox04:28
Ahmuckbleh, aptoncd works if you can restore aptoncd ... searching for another method04:40
Ahmuckah, apt-cdrom add05:01
Ahmuckk, what do you do if you want to setup 10 servers the same?  keep downloading from ubuntu servers using aptitude?05:32
mralphabetpreseeding06:03
macdAhmuck, I just know howto bootstrap a system, but Im sure google would turn up a doc or two, think livecd+gparted+debootstrap06:57
macdAhmuck, or I could throw something together, it might be a good thing for the wiki anywho06:57
macdbut that might take a few days06:57
Ahmuckwhat is a bootstrap, just bare debain?06:58
macdpretty much, kernel+binutils06:59
macdI use it to make a virtual machine host, then also build guests off the same method06:59
macdthen you can have a base template for all your vm's06:59
macdthats prolly further than you need07:00
macdoops07:02
macdAhmuck, not sure if you said anything elsae07:04
Ahmuckwell, i was thinking about bootstraping some old pcs if i thought it would make a difference, however after fighting with xserver-xorg install and trying to install just the video driver and input driver i needed, i don't think it's going to work without a lot of work.  i was looking for an install that would reduce the number of processes going on and free memory07:04
macdits an option to only get a base system07:04
macdI'd like to see something similar as a tasksel on install07:05
* macd makes a note on that07:05
Ahmucksomething similark, oh, right, a base install.  i think jeos was an attempt at that.  i hope they pursue it further07:19
Ahmuckactually, i just semi-abort the server install, and so it does not install a particular server07:20
steelwolfHi i have only 2 files listed on http://203.116.63.66/dl/ but when i did ls -l there's other 2 tar files but its not showing up.is it permission problem?i have it all chmod 77707:20
Ahmuckthe files are .something?07:22
Ahmuckls -al07:22
Ahmuckor ls -a07:23
krautmoin07:29
steelwolfno07:54
steelwolfwithout .something07:54
Ahmuckwhere is the domain name set for ubuntu server?  hostname is set in /etc/hostname, but domainname is set in ?08:05
Kamping_Kaiserahmuck needs more patience09:35

pete2hello14:56
pete2can someone help with m1005 MFP printer/scanner/copier. i cant get scanner to work. printer works flawlesly but xsane refuses to detect scanner, any help on this ?14:58
dantalizingcan someone tell me what the issue is with supporting webmin?17:27
leonel!webmin17:40
ubotuwebmin is no longer supported in Debian and Ubuntu. It is not compatible with the way that Ubuntu packages handle configuration files, and is likely to cause unexpected issues with your system17:40
dantalizinggeneric... webmin has downloadable debs which they claim they test ... i only saw 1 bug related to webmin ...that was for bacula17:45

geniiHello, If I have 2 identical drives with identical uuid and contents if I use the uuid for grub and fstab will it write to both?19:33
genii(both drives)19:33
* genii sips a coffee19:34
geniiMaybe I'll experiment on a couple usb sticks19:42
sorengenii: No.19:43
sorengenii: If you have two drives with identical uuid, you're bound to get unexpected results.19:43
geniisoren: So it's a first-found wins thing19:43
geniieg sda =uuid match so sda gets used?19:44
sorenI'd actually rather guess last-found wins.19:44
geniiHmm19:44
sorenGiven a UUID we won't iterate through block devices looking for it.19:45
sorenWhen a block device appears, its uuid is detected and a symlink is created in /dev/disk/by-uuid19:45
geniiah by udev, yes19:45
sorenRight.19:47
soren...but seriously...19:47
sorenTwo block devices with the same uuid => trouble.19:47
geniisoren: The idea occurred to me because once by accident I put 2 identical hd both set as master on the old ribbons (without cs twist in them) and the computer wrote to both19:48
sorenerk..19:49
