I set it up but when i go to map the buttons it ony detects the up/down/left/right/ ok/ number buttons. i was wandering if there was any way to enable use of the fastforward/rewind or channel up/down buttons?12:51

alexvd_Hi running into an issue with my serial ports and the change channel script.  After several crashes the port begins to timeout when the script is called.  It also happens if i manually call it from the command line.  The script is enabled and the ports are not busy.  It works fine for a while then starts timing out.  If I touch the port or use for instance dtvcontrol from another laptop it works fine.  Then it will work18:46
alexvd_s one time in myth and then lockup.  Anyone have any clues before I reinstall?18:46
savageone1howdie folks18:49
savageone1mythtv to linuxmce convert, now converting back to mythtv via mythbuntu18:49
alexvd_hey savageone118:49
savageone1my question:  I'm reading about the upgrade process...  Is it as easy as it looks?  My beef has always been updating to a new version has been ridiculous w/ knoppmyth and the like18:50
alexvd_savageone1: thats why i moved to ubuntumyth too18:50
savageone1also, it looks as though I could install a full gnome environment, but will that effect my upgrades...  It says on the site "The upgrade procedure will only upgrade Mythbuntu packages if you don't have a gnome or kde desktop installed."18:50
savageone1alex:  I mean, linuxmce is amazing, but it's just not there yet18:50
alexvd_savageone its very easy to install mythbuntu18:51
savageone1and the community is ridiculous, bunch of people arguing in the channel etc.  hard to get help, hard to pitch ideas18:51
savageone1alex:  I've installed it before, but just to check it out never used it a lot18:51
alexvd_and the upgrade is just like if you upgrade ubuntu just enable the repos18:51
savageone1I'm not so worry about ease, I am savvy, it's just I don't want a to be fucking w/ it all the time know what I mean?18:51
alexvd_yeah well sorry but myth is myth18:51
alexvd_no matter what distribution18:52
savageone1true true18:52
alexvd_good thing about mythbuntu is its based on debian which is the same for knoppmyth and linuxmce18:52
savageone1if I were to do the mythtv updates via apt-get, does that break the system18:52
alexvd_so that made the commands and logs18:52
alexvd_no18:52
savageone1since it appears there's some additional stuff mythbuntu did to make things easy18:52
alexvd_knoppmyth it would18:52
alexvd_yes18:52
savageone1yup, knoppmyth is a pig ;)18:52
savageone1i used it for a year18:52
savageone1it's easy as pie, but it's friggin knoppix so what do you want haha18:53
alexvd_So here is the skinny.  Mythbuntu still has some warts18:53
alexvd_knoppmyth probably a little more mature18:53
savageone1tell me about them18:53
savageone1I'm not above beta testing hehe18:53
savageone1does mythbuntu have the newest mythtv running18:53
savageone1what I'm looking for is ubuntu and mythtv, I'm a ubuntu man18:53
alexvd_ok so if you run pchdtv cards they have a bug that when you do the install you cant do channel scan until next reboot.  its like the backend is not started18:54
savageone1so if this is just that minus the full process of instlaling ubuntu and then mythtv, I'm game18:54
alexvd_yep18:54
savageone1that's not so bad18:54
savageone1what else18:54
savageone1gimme the worst ;)18:54
alexvd_no static ip at first18:54
alexvd_need reboot18:54
savageone1can it act as my router too easily?18:54
savageone1that I didn't mind aboutlinuxmce18:54
savageone1makes pxe stuff easier18:54
alexvd_hmm that I dont do.  I run cisco routers standalone18:55
savageone1coool18:55
alexvd_little worried about the fact the box goes down i lose my network18:55
savageone1I generally use an ipcop box18:55
savageone1every time?18:55
savageone1sure it's not an adapter issue?18:55
alexvd_cool just have to many issues with myth and i end up reinstalling18:55
alexvd_no I have strange issue with serial ports and the external change scripts18:56
alexvd_it seems to get borked after a while and I cant figure out how to fix18:56
alexvd_it just starts to timeout18:56
savageone1wow it looks like I can just do a brandy new ubuntu install and then do mythbuntu through the package manager18:57
savageone1mythtv still has voip support right?18:57
alexvd_yes18:57
alexvd_although i just use it to register to asterisk18:57
alexvd_probably want to just do ubuntu then load the packages18:57
savageone1I'll be doing a broadvoice account from home18:57
savageone1I have asterisk in my business though ;)18:58
savageone1trixbox and elastix are my friends hehe18:58
alexvd_mythbuntu works better if you want to just pop the disc in and do install18:58
savageone1I'll do the ubuntu first way definitely18:58
alexvd_it has some good stuff in it for the remote18:58
savageone1I might do that then18:58
alexvd_u dont need to do with mythbuntu18:58
alexvd_just load the disc18:58
savageone1I've always had issues w/ my remote18:58
alexvd_installs the whole shebang18:58
savageone1either way I end up w/ essentially the same product right18:58
alexvd_except for some of the newest themes like blootube18:59
alexvd_yes18:59
savageone1my thing is, I want to have full access to my gnome18:59
alexvd_you can install mythbuntu and then install the desktop18:59
savageone1you ever make your own themes?18:59
alexvd_I wish.  I can barely keep my boxes stable.  Too much mucking around18:59
savageone1what's that gnome version they got w/ all the crazy screen changing effects?18:59
savageone1I wanted to check that out18:59
alexvd_latest ubuntu works out of box with compiz18:59
alexvd_just enable desktop effects18:59
savageone1is compiz installed?19:00
alexvd_and install the control manager19:00
alexvd_yes19:00
alexvd_yes compiz installed19:00
savageone1if I do the mythbuntu method it is?19:00
alexvd_just enable desktop effects19:00
savageone1nice19:00
alexvd_hmmm I dont know about mythbuntu19:00
savageone1but I'm sure I can get it w/ the package manager19:00
alexvd_yes19:00
alexvd_mythbuntu is basically 7.10 gutsy19:00
savageone1so far it seems if I don't want to have to do my remote manually, I should do the mythbuntu instead of manual install19:00
alexvd_so its probably thier19:01
alexvd_yes well it also has a control panel thats nice.19:01
alexvd_the tv out setup is really sweet19:01
alexvd_it enables vnc and nfs all nicely19:01
savageone1that's what I'm doing then19:01
alexvd_so it make life much easier19:01
savageone1less work = good19:01
alexvd_it really does19:01
savageone1what's your involvement w/ the project?19:02
alexvd_it also has some scripts for mysql database19:02
alexvd_i am just a user19:02
alexvd_trying to fix my setup19:02
savageone1I hear ya19:02
alexvd_i run knoppmyth for 3 years19:02
alexvd_however i got tired of the upgrade path and i run ubuntu on my desktops19:02
alexvd_so it seemed the better way to go19:03
alexvd_so are you good with mounting drives and nfs etc19:03
savageone1a little19:04
savageone1;)19:04
savageone1it's nice to have the gui for that, honestly19:04
savageone1hehe19:04
savageone1I can do:  man mount19:04
savageone1;)19:04
alexvd_ok19:04
alexvd_I will figure it out or just reinstall19:04
savageone1you got your data seperate I assume19:04
savageone1my beef w/ mythtv before,a nd with linuxmce now, is it isn't as geared towards "collectors" as aI'd like19:05
savageone1I mean, I've got a HUGE movie collection, a lot of different formats19:05
savageone1and I want to keep collecting19:05
alexvd_yeah that is the plan.  I dont want to keep losing all my data and recordings everytime this stupid friggin probles with the serial ports19:05
savageone1I also want to be able to pop in a dvd, and rip it to the core w/ or w/o compression on a per case basis19:05
alexvd_well i have only couple terabytes19:05
savageone1same here hehe19:05
alexvd_you can do that pretty easy in knoppmyth or any mythtv19:06
savageone1linuxmce you damned near had to reboot to see data19:06
savageone1yup19:06
savageone1my knopmmyth box is still up haha19:06
savageone1it's my backup when the girl starts bitching19:06
alexvd_linuxmce looks intriquing but i cant see all that stuff working19:06
alexvd_yeah tell me about it girl start bitching my wife hates mythtv19:06
alexvd_i have to fix it today or she is going to kill me19:07
alexvd_ok hey good luck going to take my daughter to the park.  Good luck.19:07

rinaldi_on mythtv on mythbuntu why am i not able to see videos in the library section? do the files have to be in a certain folder/ certain file type. also if i want to access the files from my laptop should i just run the frontend from the laptop and configure to connect to the backend on my pc? thanks20:10
Davieyif you like, or use vlc et20:10
Davieyetc20:10
Davieyand yes, video's have to be in a certain location, and the default setup requires a 'scan'20:10
rinaldi_daviey: when i scan a small box falshes blue and then goes off. im not sure it has even scanned. i also changed the video store location to where my videos are and scanned but still no luck20:12
Davieypermissions?20:12
rinaldi_well i pu the location as being /home/videos/. so i dunno, not sure about permission20:13
DavieyI think the solution is for you to keep trying different things :)20:13
rinaldi_yeh il keep at it! thanks20:14
