alexvd_ | Hi running into an issue with my serial ports and the change channel script. After several crashes the port begins to timeout when the script is called. It also happens if i manually call it from the command line. The script is enabled and the ports are not busy. It works fine for a while then starts timing out. If I touch the port or use for instance dtvcontrol from another laptop it works fine. Then it will work | 18:46 |
alexvd_ | s one time in myth and then lockup. Anyone have any clues before I reinstall? | 18:46 |
savageone1 | howdie folks | 18:49 |
savageone1 | mythtv to linuxmce convert, now converting back to mythtv via mythbuntu | 18:49 |
alexvd_ | hey savageone1 | 18:49 |
savageone1 | my question: I'm reading about the upgrade process... Is it as easy as it looks? My beef has always been updating to a new version has been ridiculous w/ knoppmyth and the like | 18:50 |
alexvd_ | savageone1: thats why i moved to ubuntumyth too | 18:50 |
savageone1 | also, it looks as though I could install a full gnome environment, but will that effect my upgrades... It says on the site "The upgrade procedure will only upgrade Mythbuntu packages if you don't have a gnome or kde desktop installed." | 18:50 |
savageone1 | alex: I mean, linuxmce is amazing, but it's just not there yet | 18:50 |
alexvd_ | savageone its very easy to install mythbuntu | 18:51 |
savageone1 | and the community is ridiculous, bunch of people arguing in the channel etc. hard to get help, hard to pitch ideas | 18:51 |
savageone1 | alex: I've installed it before, but just to check it out never used it a lot | 18:51 |
alexvd_ | and the upgrade is just like if you upgrade ubuntu just enable the repos | 18:51 |
savageone1 | I'm not so worry about ease, I am savvy, it's just I don't want a to be fucking w/ it all the time know what I mean? | 18:51 |
alexvd_ | yeah well sorry but myth is myth | 18:51 |
alexvd_ | no matter what distribution | 18:52 |
savageone1 | true true | 18:52 |
alexvd_ | good thing about mythbuntu is its based on debian which is the same for knoppmyth and linuxmce | 18:52 |
savageone1 | if I were to do the mythtv updates via apt-get, does that break the system | 18:52 |
alexvd_ | so that made the commands and logs | 18:52 |
alexvd_ | no | 18:52 |
savageone1 | since it appears there's some additional stuff mythbuntu did to make things easy | 18:52 |
alexvd_ | knoppmyth it would | 18:52 |
alexvd_ | yes | 18:52 |
savageone1 | yup, knoppmyth is a pig ;) | 18:52 |
savageone1 | i used it for a year | 18:52 |
savageone1 | it's easy as pie, but it's friggin knoppix so what do you want haha | 18:53 |
alexvd_ | So here is the skinny. Mythbuntu still has some warts | 18:53 |
alexvd_ | knoppmyth probably a little more mature | 18:53 |
savageone1 | tell me about them | 18:53 |
savageone1 | I'm not above beta testing hehe | 18:53 |
savageone1 | does mythbuntu have the newest mythtv running | 18:53 |
savageone1 | what I'm looking for is ubuntu and mythtv, I'm a ubuntu man | 18:53 |
alexvd_ | ok so if you run pchdtv cards they have a bug that when you do the install you cant do channel scan until next reboot. its like the backend is not started | 18:54 |
savageone1 | so if this is just that minus the full process of instlaling ubuntu and then mythtv, I'm game | 18:54 |
alexvd_ | yep | 18:54 |
savageone1 | that's not so bad | 18:54 |
savageone1 | what else | 18:54 |
savageone1 | gimme the worst ;) | 18:54 |
alexvd_ | no static ip at first | 18:54 |
alexvd_ | need reboot | 18:54 |
savageone1 | can it act as my router too easily? | 18:54 |
savageone1 | that I didn't mind aboutlinuxmce | 18:54 |
savageone1 | makes pxe stuff easier | 18:54 |
alexvd_ | hmm that I dont do. I run cisco routers standalone | 18:55 |
savageone1 | coool | 18:55 |
alexvd_ | little worried about the fact the box goes down i lose my network | 18:55 |
savageone1 | I generally use an ipcop box | 18:55 |
savageone1 | every time? | 18:55 |
savageone1 | sure it's not an adapter issue? | 18:55 |
alexvd_ | cool just have to many issues with myth and i end up reinstalling | 18:55 |
alexvd_ | no I have strange issue with serial ports and the external change scripts | 18:56 |
alexvd_ | it seems to get borked after a while and I cant figure out how to fix | 18:56 |
alexvd_ | it just starts to timeout | 18:56 |
savageone1 | wow it looks like I can just do a brandy new ubuntu install and then do mythbuntu through the package manager | 18:57 |
savageone1 | mythtv still has voip support right? | 18:57 |
alexvd_ | yes | 18:57 |
alexvd_ | although i just use it to register to asterisk | 18:57 |
alexvd_ | probably want to just do ubuntu then load the packages | 18:57 |
savageone1 | I'll be doing a broadvoice account from home | 18:57 |
savageone1 | I have asterisk in my business though ;) | 18:58 |
savageone1 | trixbox and elastix are my friends hehe | 18:58 |
alexvd_ | mythbuntu works better if you want to just pop the disc in and do install | 18:58 |
savageone1 | I'll do the ubuntu first way definitely | 18:58 |
alexvd_ | it has some good stuff in it for the remote | 18:58 |
savageone1 | I might do that then | 18:58 |
alexvd_ | u dont need to do with mythbuntu | 18:58 |
alexvd_ | just load the disc | 18:58 |
savageone1 | I've always had issues w/ my remote | 18:58 |
alexvd_ | installs the whole shebang | 18:58 |
savageone1 | either way I end up w/ essentially the same product right | 18:58 |
alexvd_ | except for some of the newest themes like blootube | 18:59 |
alexvd_ | yes | 18:59 |
savageone1 | my thing is, I want to have full access to my gnome | 18:59 |
alexvd_ | you can install mythbuntu and then install the desktop | 18:59 |
savageone1 | you ever make your own themes? | 18:59 |
alexvd_ | I wish. I can barely keep my boxes stable. Too much mucking around | 18:59 |
savageone1 | what's that gnome version they got w/ all the crazy screen changing effects? | 18:59 |
savageone1 | I wanted to check that out | 18:59 |
alexvd_ | latest ubuntu works out of box with compiz | 18:59 |
alexvd_ | just enable desktop effects | 18:59 |
savageone1 | is compiz installed? | 19:00 |
alexvd_ | and install the control manager | 19:00 |
alexvd_ | yes | 19:00 |
alexvd_ | yes compiz installed | 19:00 |
savageone1 | if I do the mythbuntu method it is? | 19:00 |
alexvd_ | just enable desktop effects | 19:00 |
savageone1 | nice | 19:00 |
alexvd_ | hmmm I dont know about mythbuntu | 19:00 |
savageone1 | but I'm sure I can get it w/ the package manager | 19:00 |
alexvd_ | yes | 19:00 |
alexvd_ | mythbuntu is basically 7.10 gutsy | 19:00 |
savageone1 | so far it seems if I don't want to have to do my remote manually, I should do the mythbuntu instead of manual install | 19:00 |
alexvd_ | so its probably thier | 19:01 |
alexvd_ | yes well it also has a control panel thats nice. | 19:01 |
alexvd_ | the tv out setup is really sweet | 19:01 |
alexvd_ | it enables vnc and nfs all nicely | 19:01 |
savageone1 | that's what I'm doing then | 19:01 |
alexvd_ | so it make life much easier | 19:01 |
savageone1 | less work = good | 19:01 |
alexvd_ | it really does | 19:01 |
savageone1 | what's your involvement w/ the project? | 19:02 |
alexvd_ | it also has some scripts for mysql database | 19:02 |
alexvd_ | i am just a user | 19:02 |
alexvd_ | trying to fix my setup | 19:02 |
savageone1 | I hear ya | 19:02 |
alexvd_ | i run knoppmyth for 3 years | 19:02 |
alexvd_ | however i got tired of the upgrade path and i run ubuntu on my desktops | 19:02 |
alexvd_ | so it seemed the better way to go | 19:03 |
alexvd_ | so are you good with mounting drives and nfs etc | 19:03 |
savageone1 | a little | 19:04 |
savageone1 | ;) | 19:04 |
savageone1 | it's nice to have the gui for that, honestly | 19:04 |
savageone1 | hehe | 19:04 |
savageone1 | I can do: man mount | 19:04 |
savageone1 | ;) | 19:04 |
alexvd_ | ok | 19:04 |
alexvd_ | I will figure it out or just reinstall | 19:04 |
savageone1 | you got your data seperate I assume | 19:04 |
savageone1 | my beef w/ mythtv before,a nd with linuxmce now, is it isn't as geared towards "collectors" as aI'd like | 19:05 |
savageone1 | I mean, I've got a HUGE movie collection, a lot of different formats | 19:05 |
savageone1 | and I want to keep collecting | 19:05 |
alexvd_ | yeah that is the plan. I dont want to keep losing all my data and recordings everytime this stupid friggin probles with the serial ports | 19:05 |
savageone1 | I also want to be able to pop in a dvd, and rip it to the core w/ or w/o compression on a per case basis | 19:05 |
alexvd_ | well i have only couple terabytes | 19:05 |
savageone1 | same here hehe | 19:05 |
alexvd_ | you can do that pretty easy in knoppmyth or any mythtv | 19:06 |
savageone1 | linuxmce you damned near had to reboot to see data | 19:06 |
savageone1 | yup | 19:06 |
savageone1 | my knopmmyth box is still up haha | 19:06 |
savageone1 | it's my backup when the girl starts bitching | 19:06 |
alexvd_ | linuxmce looks intriquing but i cant see all that stuff working | 19:06 |
alexvd_ | yeah tell me about it girl start bitching my wife hates mythtv | 19:06 |
alexvd_ | i have to fix it today or she is going to kill me | 19:07 |
alexvd_ | ok hey good luck going to take my daughter to the park. Good luck. | 19:07 |
savageone1 | how would you change the mythbuntu loading screen graphics | 19:35 |
savageone1 | I want to put my name in there hehe | 19:35 |
Daviey | loading screen? | 19:41 |
Daviey | the usplash boot? | 19:41 |
savageone1 | yes | 19:46 |
savageone1 | I believe | 19:46 |
savageone1 | when yo9u turn it on, after the bios tests etc, when it's loading mythbuntu | 19:46 |
savageone1 | w/ the load bar | 19:47 |
Daviey | aayes thats usplash.. check out the source and replace the pics .. google will help | 20:03 |
Daviey | http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=usplash&btnG | 20:04 |
rinaldi_ | on mythtv on mythbuntu why am i not able to see videos in the library section? do the files have to be in a certain folder/ certain file type. also if i want to access the files from my laptop should i just run the frontend from the laptop and configure to connect to the backend on my pc? thanks | 20:10 |
Daviey | if you like, or use vlc et | 20:10 |
Daviey | etc | 20:10 |
Daviey | and yes, video's have to be in a certain location, and the default setup requires a 'scan' | 20:10 |
rinaldi_ | daviey: when i scan a small box falshes blue and then goes off. im not sure it has even scanned. i also changed the video store location to where my videos are and scanned but still no luck | 20:12 |
Daviey | permissions? | 20:12 |
rinaldi_ | well i pu the location as being /home/videos/. so i dunno, not sure about permission | 20:13 |
Daviey | I think the solution is for you to keep trying different things :) | 20:13 |
rinaldi_ | yeh il keep at it! thanks | 20:14 |
