nicolahIs there a way to set the default action when I press the power button as Hibernate instead of Shutdown ? thanks00:17
nicolahThunar can't umount devices, it says they're busy even If they'r not. any idea ?00:22
PatosI just installed Xubuntu 7.10 on my iBook G4 ... the problem is that I can't boot after this, I can boot into the livecd without a problem (using live-nosplash-powerpc) as an alternative00:27
Patosbut when I try to boot the installed Xubuntu the screen just goes blank00:27
PatosWhat can I do?00:27
zoredachenicolah: it probably means the device is still busy.00:33
Patoshmm I think I fixed it00:33
zoredacheyou can use the lsof command to find out what is actually is going on.  so soemthing like sudo lsof | grep /media/MyBook00:34
nicolahok, thanks00:34
Patosjay, I got it to work :)00:35
nicolahzoredache: do you know if I can change the default power button action ? I'd like to set it to "hibernate" instead of "shutdown"00:36
PatosI guess I'll celebrate with more boose00:36
adamonline46I'm installing 7.10 with the alternate install CD on a Pentium 2 466 w/ 128MB RAM.  It seems to be hanging at 85% 'selecting and installing' packages.  Should I shut 'er down and try again?00:41
zoredachenicolah: nope00:44
nicolahthanks00:44
zoredacheadamonline46: did you try a md5 scan on your cd?  if it gets that far a failed cd, or a bad optical drive tends to be the most frequent problem00:45
adamonline46zoredache: I did the CD's 'check for defect' option, it came out okay.  I just ask because it seemed to take forever to get past Downloading and Installing the Kernel, and it's doing the same thing on the above-mentioned step...  Except for the progressing past it part 8)  I restarted it... Hopefully it works this time... Do you have any idea about how long the isntall should take on such a machine?  I think it was over an hour to ge00:47
adamonline46zoredache: Thanks for the hint about the optical drive, it if stops again, I'll swap it out...00:48

jackal_Howdy, I had a quick question. In xubuntu, when you right click on the desktop, you get a nifty little menu that treats the desktop like it would any other folder. How do I add this feature to a fresh install of xfce4?06:23
netlarlinuxHow to you adjust the balance in Xubuntu?06:27
adamonline46netlarlinux: I had to put a cinderblock on the back of my desk...06:36
netlarlinuxha ha06:38
netlarlinuxI mean the volume balance between speakers06:38
netlarlinuxbut very funny adamonline06:38
adamonline46netlarlinux: Sorry, I was looking for the answer while I let you stew on that 8)  The closest thing I could find was Applications->settings->Mixer Settings06:39
adamonline46netlarlinux: Unfortunately, I don't have a balance control there.  Probably because I'm using a 10-year-old computer; I don't even know if it has a sound card...06:40
netlarlinuxI do not see a balance control there either, my machine is 10 years old too06:41
netlarlinuxis that it?06:41

Bonzodogscothealer: what do you mean by 'printing fromt eh mousepad'21:32
Bonzodog*from the21:32
scothealeram here21:34
scothealergo ahead...21:34
Bonzodogread above21:34
scothealeri have documents that are in "mouse pad"21:34

Bonzodogyes21:35
scothealerthat seems to be the equal of wrod pad or notepad from windows...21:35
scothealerbrb...IM incoming...21:35
Bonzodoghave you got the printer setup in xubuntu21:35
Bonzodogyes, mousepad is an notepad kind of thing21:35
Bonzodogif the printer is setup, then just clicking the print option in the file menu should work21:36
scothealerhave tried that to no avail...21:37
Bonzodogis the printer setup properly?21:37
scothealeryes printer is set up in xubuntu designated as default21:37

scothealeronline interaction can be a bit weird...21:39
Bonzodogwhen you hit print, it should open the dialog21:39
scothealerit does not do that...21:39
scothealerwiat let me try it now have recently added "packages"  brb21:40
Bonzodogcheck that everything looks ok in the dialog. make sure it is looking at the printer and not something like a ghostscript PDF output21:40
scothealerclient-error-bad-request21:41
scothealerok will do brb21:41
scothealernow it says select where to print?21:42
Bonzodogyour printer should be listed there21:43
scothealerit is21:43
Bonzodogso select that21:43
scothealeroh wait a second...21:43
Bonzodogclick ok, and it should work21:43
scothealerthere is not a printer listed on THAT message...21:44
scothealerlet me copy and paste that and see what happens...brb...21:44

scothealergot it21:47
Bonzodogscothealer: by all means21:47
scothealerok have been using this version and overall am happy with it...21:47
scothealernoticed an annoying sound that exsisted when I plyed music in windows now gone...21:48
scothealervery happy with that!21:48
Bonzodogprobably the sound driver21:48
scothealeri have always been VERY leary of IRC etc in windows due to horror stories abut breaches ...21:48
scothealerdoes linus do away with that sort of thing?21:49
BonzodogI have been using IRC for 11 years now21:49
scothealerany problems?21:49
Bonzodognone that I have seen, but it's not unheard of for people to try to access your computer using the IP address given out by your machine when you log in21:50
BonzodogI run without ssh access21:50
Bonzodogand my firewall closed up21:50
scothealerok..21:50
Bonzodogso I reckon I am safe21:50
scothealerwas basically told linux not need firewall due to architecture21:50
Bonzodognot just that, but I got cloaked21:50
scothealeri have tested my system at www.grc.com21:51
Bonzodogno, linux needs firewalls -- any computer with broadband access to the net does21:51
nanonymenot really21:51
Bonzodogit doesn't need virus software, or spam software21:51
nanonymea properly designed linux desktop distro doesn't need a firewall21:51
scothealerusing shields-up and i seem to always get a perfect stealth rating21:51
scothealerhmmm..21:51
scothealerdo i have the option of getting a firewall in the area21:52
nanonymesince it has no daemons listening to requests coming from the internet21:52
nikolamshields-up? What is that?21:52
Bonzodogshields-up is a website that looks for open ports on your machine, and does a ping test21:52
scothealerapplications>system>update manager ?21:52
Bonzodogthen tells you if it finds anything21:52
graabeinhi, i want to connect to a printer that is hooked up to a windows xp machine in my network21:52
nikolamoh thanks21:53
nanonymeBonzodog, note: it checks for open/closed/violates network spesifications(firewalled)21:53
Bonzodogyes, pretty much21:53
graabeinshould i choose windows printer via samba for this?21:53
Bonzodoggraabein: yes, i would think so21:54
scothealerbrb...21:54
graabeinBonzodog, is samba installed by default on xubuntu 7.10? do i need to do anything on the xp machine except share the printer on the network?21:54
scothealerback...21:54
nanonymesince DROP is something no spesification-compliant firewall should ever do. it should REJECT :)21:55
scothealeroh there is my other question...21:55
scothealerI have websites and want to edit them...21:55
scothealerkeep getting message that I need to use some sort of "notepad" like interface mousepad is what i think it is called in linux21:56
scothealerso far have been unable to set that straight...any takers on that question?21:56
Bonzodoggraabein: I don't actually run xubuntu anymore, but I don't think so. It should be in the repos however21:57
scothealeroh shoot...21:57
graabeinBonzodog, ok i'll look for it21:58
scothealeri have been thinking I should just save what I have here and switch to "regular" ubuntu21:58
* Bonzodog runs Zenwalk linux, the slack based xfce distro21:58
