donspauldingI'm looking to build a PXE boot server that can boot .iso's.  Is this possible or will I just be wasting my time?04:41
krautmoin13:21
mikubuntuguys, is webmin an integral/essential part of the lamp installation?  It failed to load from sourceforge, and now when i look at webmin homepage, it says its a unix program, but under downloads has a debian package.  ubuntu is debian, right?  should i download this one?13:32
mikubuntui was following the instructions on this page: http://www.firehazrd.com/ubuntu/how-to-setup-lamp-on-ubuntu-710 , and as far as i know everything else loaded properly ...13:33
Gh0stywebmin is just an easy webinterface to manage your stuff but its certainly not essential13:41
Gh0styi advise even against it since in the past it tended to break systems ... :|13:41
Gh0styand security has never been very good with that, but ofcourse you need to have a bit of command line knowledge then to configure your stuff13:42
mikubuntuGh0sty: what other program would fullfill the mission that you might recommend?  i just managed to download webmin with gdebi, and then i was going to install magento, which is a fairly new ecommerce app that looks pretty good to me, but i'm a newbie, so anything shiney always looks good to me :)13:57
Gh0styhave a look at ispconfig (but i have the impression the site is down for the moment, must be a Y2k8 problem ...)13:59
mikubuntu_hmmmmm.... i wonder if you would consider helping me download the proper file for magento install? this is the page: http://www.magentocommerce.com/download   and i'm not sure which package to select.14:06
Gh0stytar.bz2 will do14:08
Gh0styprobably its only webinterface so does not really matter14:08
Gh0styonly different types of compression14:08
mikubuntu_so the bz2 is the one at the bottom of the ddropdown list; how do i unpack it once downloaded?14:10
mikubuntu_wait, there's two bz2 files; you mean the larger one that appears last on the drop down?14:11
h00smikubuntu_: tar xvzf filename.tar.bz2 /destination-directory14:11
mikubuntu_ok, well i started to download to the desktop.  can you spell out the command i have to use?  i assume i have to sudo right?14:15
h00sif you will extracting to /var/www then you must use sudo, yes. if you extracting to Desktop, home dir etc then you don't have to use sudo14:17
mikubuntu_hmmm, so still i don't know what to do with the file14:18
mikubuntu_when i right click on the file on the desktop, it asks if i want to open with arcvhive mgr or another?14:19
mikubuntu_also '[extract here]' appears on right click14:20
h00smikubuntu_: you must extract it and then move that extracted directory to /var/www. in /var/www are located web server files. since magentocom. is web application, it's must be located in that folder so the apache/php can serve it...14:25
mikubuntu_h00s: i extracted it on the desktop and now there's a folder icon there below the bz2 file that says 'magento' 10 items... is that the one you want me to move?  can you tell me how?14:29
h00syes, that's the directory you have to move. to move it, type this in terminal: sudo mv ~/Desktop/magento /var/www14:31
mikubuntu_what's the BEST way to get the files where they need to go?  should i have not extracted to desktop?  should i trash that, and open the tar with anotther app?14:31
mikubuntu_ok, lemme try14:31
mikubuntu_should there have been any output in terminal?  do i need to check it?  din't see any output ...14:34
mikubuntu_i forgot how to cli check for file location14:36
h00sif there's no output, it's ok. there shouldn't be magento directory on desktop anymore..14:36
mikubuntu_ok, you14:36
mikubuntu_youre right, it's gone!14:37
mikubuntu_does that make me a developomer now?14:37
h00s:D14:39
mikubuntu_so, how do i make the whole thing launchable now?  it doesn't appear in menu yet... do i just have to launch magento, or do i have to start the whole LAMP every time i work on it?14:39
h00sall the way :)14:39
mikubuntu_i should call the bank and see if any money is pouring in yet14:40
h00sit's not application like other applications on your desktop. it's a web app so you have to "run" it from browser (http://localhost/magento). yes, you must have running apache+php and mysql to able to work on it.14:40
mikubuntu_ummmm.... so how to launch all of them if they don't appear on menu?14:41
h00salso, you must configure magento (connection to your mysql database etc.). since it is magento specific, i can't help it with that14:41
h00slook up :) "run" it from browser (http://localhost/magento)14:42
mikubuntu_ya, i'm gonna start studying all their forums more, but they din't have but five ppl in #magento ....14:43
mikubuntu_h00s: so when i 'launch' http://localhost/magento will it automagically start the LAMP features it requires, i.e., apache, mysql, php, etc...?14:44
h00smikubuntu_: noup, it's starts automatically with server/computer if they are installed14:46
mikubuntu_guess not, i tried and it said 'magento not on this server'14:46
mikubuntu_so i have to configure magento to those components, but how do i do that if i can't launch it?14:47
mikubuntu_you're prolly busy, i guess i should stop torturing you with this drivel ...14:48
h00syeah, sry i respond slow, working on something here. there's too much questions and it's quite difficult to answer it on irc. i suggest you search http://help.ubuntu.com, advanced topis, installing servers etc.14:51
mikubuntu_thanks for all your help.  was just studying the magento wiki, and i guess i'll go back to #magento and see if anybody showed up there yet.15:01
mikubuntu_oh, yeah, and i gotta call the bank.15:02
