[04:41] I'm looking to build a PXE boot server that can boot .iso's. Is this possible or will I just be wasting my time? [13:21] moin [13:32] guys, is webmin an integral/essential part of the lamp installation? It failed to load from sourceforge, and now when i look at webmin homepage, it says its a unix program, but under downloads has a debian package. ubuntu is debian, right? should i download this one? [13:33] i was following the instructions on this page: http://www.firehazrd.com/ubuntu/how-to-setup-lamp-on-ubuntu-710 , and as far as i know everything else loaded properly ... [13:41] webmin is just an easy webinterface to manage your stuff but its certainly not essential [13:41] i advise even against it since in the past it tended to break systems ... :| [13:42] and security has never been very good with that, but ofcourse you need to have a bit of command line knowledge then to configure your stuff [13:57] Gh0sty: what other program would fullfill the mission that you might recommend? i just managed to download webmin with gdebi, and then i was going to install magento, which is a fairly new ecommerce app that looks pretty good to me, but i'm a newbie, so anything shiney always looks good to me :) [13:59] have a look at ispconfig (but i have the impression the site is down for the moment, must be a Y2k8 problem ...) [14:06] hmmmmm.... i wonder if you would consider helping me download the proper file for magento install? this is the page: http://www.magentocommerce.com/download and i'm not sure which package to select. [14:08] tar.bz2 will do [14:08] probably its only webinterface so does not really matter [14:08] only different types of compression [14:10] so the bz2 is the one at the bottom of the ddropdown list; how do i unpack it once downloaded? [14:11] wait, there's two bz2 files; you mean the larger one that appears last on the drop down? [14:11] mikubuntu_: tar xvzf filename.tar.bz2 /destination-directory [14:15] ok, well i started to download to the desktop. can you spell out the command i have to use? i assume i have to sudo right? [14:17] if you will extracting to /var/www then you must use sudo, yes. if you extracting to Desktop, home dir etc then you don't have to use sudo [14:18] hmmm, so still i don't know what to do with the file [14:19] when i right click on the file on the desktop, it asks if i want to open with arcvhive mgr or another? [14:20] also '[extract here]' appears on right click [14:25] mikubuntu_: you must extract it and then move that extracted directory to /var/www. in /var/www are located web server files. since magentocom. is web application, it's must be located in that folder so the apache/php can serve it... [14:29] h00s: i extracted it on the desktop and now there's a folder icon there below the bz2 file that says 'magento' 10 items... is that the one you want me to move? can you tell me how? [14:31] yes, that's the directory you have to move. to move it, type this in terminal: sudo mv ~/Desktop/magento /var/www [14:31] what's the BEST way to get the files where they need to go? should i have not extracted to desktop? should i trash that, and open the tar with anotther app? [14:31] ok, lemme try [14:34] should there have been any output in terminal? do i need to check it? din't see any output ... [14:36] i forgot how to cli check for file location [14:36] if there's no output, it's ok. there shouldn't be magento directory on desktop anymore.. [14:36] ok, you [14:37] youre right, it's gone! [14:37] does that make me a developomer now? [14:39] :D [14:39] so, how do i make the whole thing launchable now? it doesn't appear in menu yet... do i just have to launch magento, or do i have to start the whole LAMP every time i work on it? [14:39] all the way :) [14:40] i should call the bank and see if any money is pouring in yet [14:40] it's not application like other applications on your desktop. it's a web app so you have to "run" it from browser (http://localhost/magento). yes, you must have running apache+php and mysql to able to work on it. [14:41] ummmm.... so how to launch all of them if they don't appear on menu? [14:41] also, you must configure magento (connection to your mysql database etc.). since it is magento specific, i can't help it with that [14:42] look up :) "run" it from browser (http://localhost/magento) [14:43] ya, i'm gonna start studying all their forums more, but they din't have but five ppl in #magento .... [14:44] h00s: so when i 'launch' http://localhost/magento will it automagically start the LAMP features it requires, i.e., apache, mysql, php, etc...? [14:46] mikubuntu_: noup, it's starts automatically with server/computer if they are installed [14:46] guess not, i tried and it said 'magento not on this server' [14:47] so i have to configure magento to those components, but how do i do that if i can't launch it? [14:48] you're prolly busy, i guess i should stop torturing you with this drivel ... [14:51] yeah, sry i respond slow, working on something here. there's too much questions and it's quite difficult to answer it on irc. i suggest you search http://help.ubuntu.com, advanced topis, installing servers etc. [15:01] thanks for all your help. was just studying the magento wiki, and i guess i'll go back to #magento and see if anybody showed up there yet. [15:02] oh, yeah, and i gotta call the bank. [16:05] how do i tell what version of packages i have installed? Like apache, php, etc? === dantaliz1ng is now known as dantalizing [16:20] J_5: apt-cache policy apache2 [16:21] Happy New Year, All!! [16:25] nealmcb: thanks! and happy new year to you as well [16:25] :-) [16:28] if i apt-get remove a package, does that remove everything? including log files? [16:32] J_5: you need to also purge it to remove configuration files. I'm not sure about log files [16:34] how do i purge it? [16:55] J_5: see "man apt-get" [16:56] nealmcb: ok thanks [21:52] bonsoir === Ubuntu-fr790 is now known as Buntix [21:57] quelqu'un ici ? :p
