c1|freaky[01:54:12] <c1|freaky> hi all. im having a strange problem: i rent a new server, with larger discs and better hardware. i used partimage to save and restore the old disks on the new server. the old discs were arround 150GB each. the new server has 2 750GB HDDs. my problem is this: http://main.freakyy.de/cfdisk.txt http://main.freakyy.de/df.txt as you can see, cfdisk shows me 2 750GB HDDs but df -h shows me arround 140GB partitions. which are not00:55
c1|freakyshown in cfdisk. what is wrong00:55
c1|freaky[01:54:12] <c1|freaky> anyone got any idea how i can fix that?00:55
Kamping_Kaiserdo you need to expand the partitions?00:58
c1|freakyumm, yea00:58
c1|freakyi want to use up all disc space for those partitions00:58
c1|freakyjust one swap00:59
c1|freakyKamping_Kaiser ^^01:01
c1|freakythe thing is, that there are no 150GB partitions. it seems partimage has just ... put the data on there like that. in reality, those partitions are not present the way they are shown in df -h01:02
Kamping_Kaiserodd. sorry i cant stick around, heading out ofr lunch01:03
c1|freaky:(( ok01:03

hameshow can i limit a ssh user to only read his home directory and /usr/bin12:35
Nafalloanyone has anything to say about Maxtor Atlas 15K II?13:00
sorenhames: You can't.14:21
Nafallohames: no /bin/bash? ;-)14:21
mok0ho14:22
\shjo14:22
\shmok0: I removed all swap parts from fstab...but still mkswap doesn't work because device or resource busy14:22
\shI think I'll reinstall dapper and try to fix it on edgy14:22
mok0\sh: that is the problem.14:22
mok0\sh: why dont you go to a more recent14:23
Nafallo\sh: lsof?14:23
mok0\sh: feisty?14:23
\shNafallo: nothing...no process is using /dev/sda2 or /dev/sdb214:23
\shmok0: i'm running on gutsy...14:23
soren\sh: It won't show if it's the kernel using it.14:23
mok0\sh: I'd be kinda fun to understand what's going on, though14:23
soren\sh: What's the problem exactly?14:24
\shsoren: ok...I installed dapper on a server...running two md devices and have two separate swap parts...14:24
\shsoren: md0 -> raid1 / md1 -> raid1 working perfectly.../dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 -> swap parts..were running fine on dapper14:25
\shsoren: after upgrading from dapper over edgy, feisty to gutsy I can't see any swap devices anymore...swapon -a -e gives me "invalid argument for /dev/sda2 and sdb2" mkswap /dev/sda2 or mkswap /dev/sdb2 gives me "device or resource busy"14:25
\shsoren: even when I let fstab forget about having swap parts anyways14:26
soren\sh: Noting in /proc/swaps?14:26
\shsoren: googling gives me a lot of pointers of the same problem..and https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/66637 is also about it..but I don't have a laptop but a setver14:26
ubotuLaunchpad bug 66637 in util-linux "After running mkswap, swap space is discarded, system fails to hibernate (invalid swap signature)" [High,Confirmed]14:26
soren\sh: Do you have evms installed?14:26
\shsoren: nothing in /proc/swaps14:27
\shsoren: yepp14:27
soren\sh: Do you need it?14:27
\shsoren: no it's not started anyways14:28
\shsoren: just mdadm14:28
soren\sh: If not, remove it, reboot, and you're likely to be much happier.14:28
\shsoren: some more informations? what about evms installed but not being started?14:29
soren\sh: i forget how it gets started, to be honest. I thought it ran through udev?14:29
NafalloI would think it has rules in udev running under the initramfs already.14:29
sorenetc/udev/rules.d/85-evms.rules14:30
sorenIt does use udev.14:30
soren\sh: ...so AFAIR, it creates a new block device (devmapper style) for each existing block device.14:30
Nafalloit's in universe those days ;-)14:30
mok0soren: yikes!14:31
sorenmok0: It's *very* annoying.14:31
\shfck14:31
\shthat's it14:31
\shthis is crap14:31
\shreally14:31
sorenIt is.14:31
mok0\sh: it also explains that the problem appeared after an upgrade14:32
\shevms is being installed by default on dapper server lts right?14:32
soren\sh: Yes.14:32
soren\sh: but back then, it didn't cause as much trouble as it does now.14:32
soren\sh: ...due to all the udev changes we made since then.14:32
\shsoren: so we will have problems doing dapper -lts > hardy lts dist-upgrades...14:32
soren\sh: I know :)14:32
\shoh fun14:32
\shthat cost me now 2 hours of time ...14:33
\shand all google pointers are totally crap too14:33
mok0\sh: but we all learned something :-)14:33
Nafallothat -server has related support as well, rather than -motu? ;-)14:34
mok0\sh: make a note of this problem somewhere, so it get's indexed by google14:34
\shsoren: do we have a good fix for it for the dapper -> hardy upgrade path...or just letting all server systems die and put the solution in the documentation? ,-)14:34
Nafallo\sh: blog it! ;-)14:34
* Nafallo would bet some server are using the crap14:35
\shNafallo: strato in germany is giving a ubuntu dapper lts automatic installation for their root servers...so people will using the upgrade path lts -> lts next time14:35
soren\sh: I don't remember, to be honest...14:35
* soren has a fever today, so don't expect much..14:36
Nafallo\sh: yea. so let mvo add some weird hook that in weird ways find out if evms is in use and remove it if not :-P14:36
mok0Nafallo: mvo?14:37
Nafallomok0: Michael Vogt, the maintainer of the upgrade tool :-)14:38
mok0Glad not to be in his shoes :-)14:38
\shwell, I'll blog it now ;)14:40
mok0\sh: is your server up & running?14:40
\shmok0: yepp14:43
mok0\sh: cool14:43
\shsoren: thx for the fix :)14:45
GUARDiAN-hi, i installed ubuntu-server with english language and now i have only "C", "en_US.utf8" and "POSIX" as locales. how can i install for example the "de_DE.utf8"-locale?15:28
ivoksinstall language-pack-de15:32
GUARDiAN-hm, interesting. i tried that with aptitude and it wants ~430mb dependencies. apt-get doesn't want these deps.15:33
ivokslast time i checked, packages are installed with apt-get15:34
ivoksaptitude does a lot more than apt-get15:34
sorenaptitude pulls in recommended packages, too.15:35
ivokssoren: happy new year! :)15:35
Nafalloby default...15:35
NafalloI use aptitude with sane options.15:35
sorenivoks: Likewise! :)15:36
ivokswhat's up with likewise anyway? :)15:36
sorenAsk dendrobates.15:36
ivoksi was in france for a week and i'm outdated a bit :D15:36
GUARDiAN-language-pack-de did it. thanks for your help15:42

ScottK2ivoks: Do you have much experience with using milters?16:49
ivoksScottK2: never used them :/16:54
ScottK2ivoks: OK.  Thanks.16:54
ScottK2I doubt many of us here have.16:54
ivoks:)16:54
ScottK2I'm using dkim-filter (dkim-milter) for signing DKIM and that's working well, but that's my only experience.16:55
ScottK2BTW, 4 of the (I think) 8 needed MIRs to get amavisd-new into Main are done.16:55
