Zealot87it keeps thinking the agp graphics card is located at PCI;1;0;0 or something00:03
Dr_willisibkanat,  check the troubleshooting guide at the !nvidia page I guess.00:03
Zealot87i dont know how to tell it that it isnt00:03
Dr_willis!nvidia | ibkanat00:03

Dr_willisZealot87,   check in /etc/X11/ there may be a backuped/origibnal xorg.conf file.00:04
ibkanatthanks I have tried those will look again I guess00:04
ibkanatis it worth it to try out kde4 is it fairly stable?00:05
Dr_willisibkanat,  There is a glx module that needs to get loaded I thouhgt.. or perhaps with nvidia cards it DOSENT need tog et loaded.00:05
Dr_willisdont get to excit3ed about kde4 at this time.00:05
Dr_willisits still a work in progress00:05
Zealot87how do i move files from the commandline?00:05
ibkanatok I am using it and it looks nice00:05
Dr_willisIt was constantly crashing on me.,00:06
Zealot87how do i make the 'dir' command go slowly so i can see all the directories?00:06
Dr_willisdir command?00:07
Dr_willisHmmm00:07
ibkanatok... I guess I will wait is it Kubuntu's or is kde 4 fairly unstable??? I thought they just had a final release00:07
ibkanatls00:07
Dr_willismost people use 'ls' :) not dir.00:07
Dr_willisdir | less   for pageing the output00:07
Zealot87im used to windows command prompt00:07
Dr_willisI have ls for windows/dos :)00:07
Zealot87welll, i never learned ls then :P00:07
Zealot87i was really young when i used DOS00:08
Dr_willistime to learn the bash FUNdaMENTALs :)00:08
Zealot87which of the old xorg.conf files should i use00:08
Dr_willisZealot87,  depends on what ones you got..  and what you did to enable the dual monitors.00:08
Dr_willisls -l shows them and the date last changed.  try the earliest one00:09
Zealot87uhhh i used the xorg configure program in the new kubuntu :P00:09
Dr_willisls -l still shows the date.00:09
geniiZealot87: kxgenerator ?00:09
Dr_willisNew Kubuntu?00:09
geniiDr_willis:  :)00:10
Zealot87oooh that makes pretty lists :)00:10
Zealot87genii, it is in the system settings of kubuntu00:10
ibkanatthanks Dr_willis laters00:10
Zealot87after that didnt work though, i reverted to dpkg reconfigure but that just ruined my xorg.conf :P00:10
Zealot87ok now how would i switch the xorg.conf with an old one?00:11
geniiZealot87: it will be something like    sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf<date of one you want>  /etc/X11/xorg.conf00:12
Zealot87and that will do the replacing for me?00:13
geniiZealot87: yes00:14
Zealot87i think its working, im starting x now00:14
geniiZealot87: where I put <date of one you want> substitute accordingly00:14
Zealot87yeah i used xorg.conf.1 because 2-9 were all yesterday :P00:14
Zealot87it worked!00:15
Zealot87thanks all for help!00:15
Dr_willisAnd once again logic and though pays off! :)00:16
Dr_willisThought.00:16
Dr_willisand a little shell voodoo. (but its not)00:16
wesleyhow would you install ubuntu on 1 gb?00:16
Dr_williswesley,  depends on what you want it to do.00:17
Dr_willisa 1gb usb drive? Or you are just real real tight on hd space?00:17
biovorewesley: hmm server install and install console system then install the gui stuff peice mill.. ( if on a HD )00:17
wesleyjust daily use but what i mean is the OX Computer i dis=d see 2 on ebay00:17
wesleyit looks a nice computer that ox computer its runs fedora core 7 i did here00:19
* Dr_willis is totally lost. :)00:19
wesleyhttp://xoforall.com00:19
Dr_willis1gb i going to be tight for  a kubuntu/ubuntu isntall.. its proberly doable. but not much space for  other things00:19
wesleyyou could chose for a flash usb thing to run your os on it?00:20
Dr_willisInstalling ubuntukubuntu to a usb-flash has issues to watch out for also00:21
wesleyi know i did try it with 2 gb mini sd00:21
Dr_willisrunning kubuntu on one of the OLPC  laptops will be a bit tight.00:21
wesleyit gots 450 mhz and 256 mb ram00:22
Dr_willisyes.. and it will still be a bit tight..00:23
Dr_willisI imagine theres people doing it :)00:23
Odd-rationalewesley: I would think that you would need more than a gb. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements00:23
Dr_willisfor a 'full' linux disrto on that thing. I think DSL, or PuppyLinux may serve better.00:24
Odd-rationalewesley: And even though your flash usb might say 1 gb, it might really be less than tha.00:24
Odd-rationale*that00:24
Paddy_EIREzenwalk maybe Dr_willis00:24
wesleythat things runs fedora its seems standaard the OX computer runs linux00:24
Dr_willisits running a very very very cut down fedora00:25
Paddy_EIREmatchbox window manager00:25
Odd-rationalewesley: I agree with Dr_willis. Use dsl or (my pref) puppy linux.00:25
Dr_willisit does run linux correct.. :) linux can run on lots of things..00:25
biovorewell I have mashed debian sarge into 400MB and 128MB ram on a PI 233 MHz Machine and it worked ok.. Just don't expect much..00:25
Dr_willisthat dosent mean you can install kubntu on it and have it run we..00:25
posingaspopularofftopic guys....00:25
Daisuke_Idotoasters...  microwaves...  the occasional hamster00:25
Zealot89i just dont work with the shell enough to remember all of the commands well enough.  but most importantly because i just switched back to kubuntu after the final year in an 8 year lifespan of my windows machine finally came to an end :P00:26
wesleyyeah okay i know you need for kubuntu 2 gb but mint linux seems to run on it and fedora00:26
* genii contemplates the linux powered internet coffee appliance00:26
Dr_willisI would think a minimal hd space needed for a useable kubuntu system would be about a 1gb+00:26
wesleybut first getting one i live in dutch00:26
geniiDr_willis: With always using the wipe cache switch of apt-get I managed to install on 780Mb00:27
* Dr_willis has lost the logic of this thread. :)00:27
Dr_willisgenii,  You sicko! :000:27
geniiheehee00:27
wesleywipe cache off?00:28
Dr_williswhen you isntall packages they get cached in /var/cache/apt/SOMTHING :)00:28
Dr_willisthat cache can get a bit big at times00:28
geniiwesley: apt-get stores in /var/cache/apt/archives, there is a switch whch always wipes it after installing the app00:28
Dr_willisso in 'theory' one can install kubuntu on a 1gb filesytem.. with work.00:29
wesleyyeah okay but will everthing work on 450 mhz00:30
biovorekde will be slow and you need 384 MB ram for all the eye candy00:30
wesleyWhat the Classmate PC?00:31
geniiI remember now, made apt.conf entry of APT::Dir::Cache::pkgcache "/tmp";00:34
ainroutis linux another type of ubuntu, or is it just a "kernel"?00:34
wesleyThe Classmate pc looks intresting00:35
geniilinux itself is just the kernel, yes00:35
geniiainrout: linux itself is just the kernel, yes00:35
biovoreIf your not doing graphics.. linux can be very small00:36
geniiainrout: A distrbution of linux like ubuntu is the kernel of linux (sometimes adjusted with patches to make the applications supplied with it operate properly) with a bundled set of applications00:37
Dr_willisLinux is all about layers and legos. :) Not layers like an Onion. :)00:37
Dr_willisPuppyLinux - is a full disrto that can fit under 50mb.00:37

dorkfaceHi all.  I have a dell laptop that has volume control by buttons.  However, with kmix, the volume goes up and down 10% each time, not sensitive enough for my tastes.  Does anyone have enough experience with it to lead me in the right direction?00:38
ainroutaha, thank you00:38
wesleyits not easy getting in europa a xo laptop00:39
Dr_willisi think id rather have an Asus EEEpc. then an XO. But thats just me. :P00:40
flowersdoes anyone run compiz?00:42
wesleyThe Asus eee pc is indeed al little better but expensive00:43
Dr_willisYep. Depends on your needs.00:43
Dr_willisI cant afford either.. so im getting Neither. :P00:43

stroudI tried gutsy alpha 3 and it doesn't seem to have the restricted drivers package.  I need it for the broadcom wireless driver02:11
NickPrestastroud, gutsy (stable) is released.02:12
stroudopps I meant the next release (hardy?)02:12
NickPrestahardy, yes.02:12

maco_¿¿??02:29
maco_I want to open Konkeror from Gnome, from terminal02:30
ubuntu_anyone know how to fix grub error 5 i tried googlin it but couldnt find an answer02:30
maco_Could u help me??02:30
Dr_willisthe command 'konqueror' starts konqueror.02:32
Daisuke_IdoDr_willis: i think genii committed seppuku02:33
Daisuke_Idoand i completely understand why02:34
Dr_willisgrub error 5 -  5 : "Disk geometry error" This error is returned when a read is attempted at a linear block address beyond the end of the BIOS translated area. This generally happens if your disk is larger than the BIOS can handle (512MB for (E)IDE disks on older machines or larger than 8GB in general).02:34
Dr_willisubuntu_,  is this on a  old system?    You may need to enable the lba mode stuff.. Ive not had to mess with that in years, used to be a issue years ago with  hard drives.02:35
ubuntu_its not very old02:35
NickPrestaDaisuke_Ido, :)02:36
Dr_willishas it ever worked , what have you done recently to it? what have you tried so far....02:36
Daisuke_Idodark chocolate-covered espresso beans...  nomnomnom02:36
trac1have a question regarding system requirements02:37
nosrednaekimtrac1: ok02:38
Dr_willisHmm.. finding 2 different sites that give what error 5 means...02:38
Dr_willis5 : Partition table invalid or corrupt This error is returned if the sanity checks on the integrity of the partition table fail. This is a bad sign.02:38
ubuntu_i had kubuntu on it a while ago but i formated my hd since then i have recently installed xp then i tried installing kubuntu and that happened...well i really dono what to try02:38
NickPrestatrac1, what is your question?02:38
trac1is ubuntu going to work well on a p3, or do I need to install kubuntu?02:38
trac1new to linux alltogether02:38
nosrednaekimtrac1: both should work about the same02:38
NickPrestatrac1, I would imagine ubuntu will run slightly better (due to Gnome) than Kubuntu02:38
Dr_willisubuntu_,  if its a clean install and nothign worth saving. I would say use fdisk and delete all the partitions, leaving the hd unallocated. restart the isntaller, and let it partition the drive.02:38
trac1i started w/ a new format02:39
trac1picked up a cheap lappy to play around w/02:39
nosrednaekimtrac1: how fast is the processor?02:39
ubuntu_ok ty ill try02:39
trac193302:39
nosrednaekimp3's can range from 500 - 1ghz02:40
nosrednaekimtrac1: nice... how much ram?02:40
trac125602:40
nosrednaekimtrac1: ok, either kubuntu or ubuntu should work just fine02:40
trac1need to find some more, but it ran the graphic installer02:40
NickPrestatrac1, that should run fine if you have the "special" effects turned off. I used to run Kubuntu (5.10) on a P3, 733 laptop with 256 RAM. You should be fine, at worst :)02:40
trac1altogether not a bad experience, things work differently then windows f/s02:43
Dr_willissudo chown willis.willis /media/windows ----> no affect.02:43

biovoredepends on the app03:08
biovoresometime its not noticable.. sometimes..  forget about it..03:08
draikBluesKaj: I am looking at my settings for Thunderbird. Nothing stands out to me.03:08
NickPrestatrac1, some applications have performance increases in Wine. Some have poor performance. It depends03:08

BluesKajtrac1,not really too bad ...I run a couple windows apps in wine with no noticeable lagtime03:09
trac1is shockwave doable? or not worth the hassle?03:09
stdintrac1: you'd have to install firefox in wine (and it should work fine)03:10
BluesKajdraik,  I've tried the the about:config in thunderbird preferences (network.protocol-handler.app.http - /opt/mozilla/bin/firefox), but that fix doesn't work either03:11

Dr_WillisIt puts a kdm theme icon in the control center somewhere..22:23
LjLdrewcipher, it's *technically*, not semantically redundant, because "sudo" switches user (to root, if not instructed otherwise), and "su" *also* switches user. there *is* redundancy. there is no redundancy in "sudo -i".22:24
trafalgarDr_Willis: would you agree that it was indeed a direct install on a native block device if the output of file -s /dev/sda5 is /dev/sda5:  x86 boot sector, Microsoft Windows XP MBR, Serial 0xfe00fd; partition 1: ID=0x7, active, starthead 1, startsector 63, 125804952 sectors?22:24

Flare183!aixgl | antonio_23:29
ubotuSorry, I don't know anything about aixgl - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi23:29
Flare183!xgl | antonio_23:29
ubotuantonio_: Kubuntu is not shipping with compiz installed or enabled by default. You can still install it and have your eyecandy goodness. The instructions are at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion - further help in #compiz-fusion23:29
acemocrimsun: http://pastebin.ca/85790523:29
stdinaiglx is automatically enabled if you have a driver that supports23:30
stdin*it23:30
antonio_ubuntu did it23:30
antonio_my card is nvidia geforce FX23:30
drewcipherthomas_newbie__: (tab noted.  thanks).    To have machines communicate having those two IP addresses then you'd need to set up the subnet mask on both machines and the router to allow them to chat.  It is really the sloppy way to do it.23:30
antonio_but i dont now where are those options in kubuntu23:30
crimsunacemo: mute IEC958, and unmute Side23:30
stdinantonio_: the only difference between Kubuntu and Ubuntu is the user interface23:31
joseph`how do i get divx to work in firefox? please help23:31
antonio_yeah, but i dont  find how to activate the x server23:31
thomas_newbie__drewcipher: just because its wrong class u mean?23:31
drewcipherthomas_newbie__:   This might help:  http://www.sans.org/dosstep/cidr.php23:31
acemocrimsun: still nothing23:31
joseph`if i could just know what pkg i need23:31
stdinantonio_: like i said, aiglx is automatically enabled if you have a driver that supports it23:32
crimsunacemo: please use the speaker-test utility23:32
thomas_newbie__drewcipher: thanks for the link i'll check it out now23:32
antonio_oh, but,23:32
antonio_ok, thanks23:32
acemocrimsun: i should be hearing something when its running?23:33
antonio_but if ubuntu had it, (i never installed it ) and its supose to be the same, why i cannot run compiz23:33
drewcipherthomas_newbie__:  cool.  it is actually the best way to learn about broadcast and netmask.    So, I should take it back if I said it is wrong.   If it was your company then I'd be worried but for a home network you're having fun on go for it.23:34
BluesKajacemo, I have to state the obvious , check your audio connections: ,soundcard  output connections , headphones & speakers etc23:34
crimsunacemo: presuming artsd isn't hogging the sound device, `speaker-test -c2 -Dplughw:0`, yes.23:35
joseph`if i could just know what pkg i need23:35
joseph`how do i get divx to work in firefox? please help23:35
thomas_newbie__drewcipher: thanks drew, a big help man. However I haven't learned CIDR subnetting...don't quite understand that page23:35
=== joseph` is now known as joseph
josephi just need to know what particular codec i need to get divx to work in firefox23:36
josephone package23:36
josephsurely, one of you know23:36
acemocrimsun: running `speaker-test -c2 -Dplughw:0` i do hear some noise from the left front and right front speakers..23:38
crimsunacemo: separately, correct?23:39
acemocrimsun: separately yeah, but its like the sound u hear when u put the radio on a non-excisting channel23:39
acemocrimsun: sorry cant think of the english word for it23:39
crimsunacemo: right, it uses pink noise23:39
crimsunthat's intentional.23:39
BluesKajcrimsun, neat test :)23:40
drewcipherthomas_newbie__:  I hear ya.  You'd probably save yourself a lot of grief by starting with IP's like 192.168.12.100, 192.168.12.101, default gateway of 12.168.12.1 and a netmask of 255.255.255.0.  That would get them all talking to each other w/out tweaking the router or getting into changing the subnets.23:40
acemocrimsun: so.. i do have the plugs connected correctly then..? if i hear the "pink" noise23:41
crimsunacemo: sound does work correctly, yes.23:42
acemocrimsun: changed the command to 'speaker-test -c5 -Dplughw:0' and with rear right and center there is no sound23:43
crimsunacemo: -c6 -Dplug:surround5123:43
crimsunacemo: you could even try -c8 -Dplug:surround7123:43
Adder---When I open up my computer if theres an active internet connection I can use it without a problem. But, if I start the connection AFTER I start Kubuntu, the OS doesnt seem to auto-detect iit. What could be wrong? :S23:44
Adder---In other words my connection is detected during boot time, but not after :<23:44
acemocrimsun: -c6 -Dplug:surround51 does not gives any sound at all23:45
crimsunacemo: are the appropriate Side, Low, etc. mixer elements unmuted and set to levels greater than zero?23:46
crimsunacemo: keep in mind that you may need to try -c6 -Dplug:surround51 and -c8 -Dplug:surround71 depending on your mixer settings.23:46
BluesKajAdder---, do you mean logout and back in shuts it off ?23:46
acemocenter and rear right aint working23:47
acemoin kmix i put everything to the max23:48
ardchoilleacemo: I noticed that on two of my computers, sounds doesn't work at all if the PCM setting is above 8423:48
BluesKajacemo, don't !23:49
crimsunacemo: but is Side unmuted?23:49
acemocrimsun: Side is unmuted yes23:49
BluesKajacemo, 71% is lots23:49
Adder---BluesKaj, its something like this: if the internet cable is plugged in the computer when it boots internet will work. If I plug it only afterwards internet doesnt work, in which case I have to reboot so the connection can be detected. :T23:50
acemoBluesKaj: lowered pcm to bout half, turned up the volume button a bit and still same23:52
ardchoilleacemo: I'm hearing impaired and noticed that I can have the Master full up and the PCM at 81% and things work fine, just fyi23:53
BluesKajwhat sound source and player are you using ..cd, mp3 in amarok or .... ?23:53
xRaich[o]2xAdder---: is the computer connected to a modem or how is the setup?23:54
BluesKajardchoille, in the red overloads the speaker amplifier inputs creating distortion, turning the speaker vol ctrls up is the way to go23:54
acemoardchoille: here.. the Master is the PCM :s23:55
ardchoilleBluesKaj: Ah, ok23:55
ardchoilleacemo: Interesting23:55
Adder---xRaich[o]2x, theres a residential gateway here23:56
BluesKajwell gents, it's tvtime with wifey for a bit ...BBL23:56
xRaich[o]2xAdder---: dhcp or static ips?23:57
Adder---xRaich[o]2x,  dhcp23:57
xRaich[o]2xAdder---: try restarting the dhcp client when reconnecting the cable23:57
Adder---xRaich[o]2x, how do I do that? x_023:57
limachey23:58
xRaich[o]2xAdder---: are any dhcp processes running?23:58
acemook.. what the beef happend?23:59
