blkorpheusnautilus breaks on flash drive access00:11
crimsunhow so?00:11
crimsunCOLUMNS=150 dpkg -l nautilus|awk '/^ii/ {print $3}'00:14
crimsun1:2.21.6-0ubuntu100:14
crimsunthat version works fine here00:14
blkorpheuscrimsun! you pop up everywhere00:14
blkorpheusanyway00:14
blkorpheusI just accessed my flash drive, and the desktop is black since I closed the flash folder window00:15
crimsuncompiz enabled?00:15
crimsundri enabled?00:15
crimsun(for the latter, /or binary-only restricted driver)00:15
blkorpheuscompiz00:16
blkorpheusnvidia, never use dri00:16
crimsuncan you reproduce it on a fresh boot using the 'nv' X.Org driver?00:16
blkorpheusI shudder to even think of trying00:18
crimsunwell, you need to.00:18
crimsunrule out the graphics driver00:18
blkorpheusthere have been recent updates to nautilus, even as I type this00:20
blkorpheusrecent updates, have broken thinggs that have worked fine00:21
blkorpheusnautilus, mythtvfrontend00:21
blkorpheusxorg00:21
blkorpheusI've been filing bugs all week00:21
crimsunthat's why I provided the version of nautilus I'm using00:22
blkorpheusbug #18510800:24
cdm10Hardy still can't be properly updated from a fresh install of Alpha 3.00:24
ubotuLaunchpad bug 185108 in mythtv "/usr/bin/mythfrontend.real: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libmyth-0.20.2.so.0: undefined symbol: stat64" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/18510800:24
Spenser309Hi00:24
blkorpheusthis was a gutsy install upgraded to alpha2 then updated from there00:25
Spenser309I'm currently trying to install xen in Hardy.  But dependencies seem to be foobared.  Specifically ubuntu-xen-desktop relies on a package called linux-xen which is unsatisfiable00:25
cdm10oh, it works now.00:25
* cdm10 shuts up00:25
blkorpheus1:2.21.6-0ubuntu100:26
blkorpheusmy nautilus version00:26
crimsunblkorpheus: and it's reproducible on a fresh boot using "nv" instead of "nvidia"?00:27
blkorpheusits this machine, so I have not rebooted00:27
blkorpheusor killed x00:28
Spenser309Anyone tried to install xen in Hardy?00:30
blkorpheuscrimsun, after this latest update the issue is not there00:30
crimsunblkorpheus: right, much as I thought.00:31
blkorpheusThe size of the flash drive on the desktop now reports 4g instead of the true 3.7G before00:31
Spenser309So, Xen anyone?00:34
RAOFblkorpheus: Sure the units haven't changed?00:35
blkorpheusI've learned silence is an acknowledgment in the negative00:35
Spenser309lol, yeap00:35
RAOFblkorpheus: 4GiB ~= 3.7GB, from memory.00:35
blkorpheusRAOF, the units increased?00:35
Spenser309ohh well I'll have to just figure it out.00:35
blkorpheusI think not00:36
blkorpheusits always been a 4g stick00:36
blkorpheusthe true size was reported before and by other distros00:36
RAOFblkorpheus: Yeah, but what does the "G" mean.  We've been transitioning from G = Gigabyte = 2^20 bytes to Gi = Gibibyte = 10^9(?) bytes.00:36
blkorpheusI think it is just a genric name forthe volume00:37
blkorpheusGB00:37
blkorpheusthe total capasity is 3,7GB00:37
blkorpheusnautilus would crash after viewing the properties of the drive then closing00:38
RAOFWheee!  Crashhappy nautilus.00:39
blkorpheusits stable now00:39
blkorpheusjust wish I could get my mythfrontend working again00:40
blkorpheusits still recording00:40
blkorpheussoI can just use any viewer to watch the recordings00:40
blkorpheusbut for live tv, I can forget it00:40
Spenser309i had a permissions problem in nautilus one time that would cause my entire system to have its permissions changed root:root00:40
blkorpheuslookslike the detailed view bug in nautiulsis gone00:42
blkorpheuswhere the length of text determined the width of the column00:42
blkorpheusone had to resize the column each time a visit to the folder was required00:43
RyanPriorMy update manager says that I have "broken packages". How do I fix them?00:44
RAOFBy not using Hardy, generally.00:45
RAOFThis is entirely expected as package versions change, new packages are added, etc.00:45
RyanPriorRAOF: so, I can reboot my computer and not risk especial stability due to "broken" packages?00:45
RAOFIndeed.00:45
RAOFAs long as you haven't *removed* anything critical.00:46
RyanPriorIt says that I can find which packages are broken using the "broken filter", but I've never used a broken filter before and don't know how.00:46
RAOFIt's in Synaptic somewhere.00:47
Spenser309in the bottom right corner of synaptic select custom filters00:47
RAOFBasically it's likely to be fixed by updates.00:47
Spenser309broken is the first one00:47
Spenser309im sorry bottom left00:47
RyanPriorHmm, now it says 0 broken in Synaptic.00:47
Spenser309What are you trying to do/00:47
Spenser309?00:47
RyanPriorJust investigating a dialog I got while upgrading, telling me that I have broken packages and that I can find them if I look.00:48
RyanPriorHardy certainly is error-prone, but I like filing bug reports, so it's all good. :-)00:48
Spenser309hmm. Doesn't it tell you to run a command? maybe sudo apt-get install -f00:49
Spenser309that should automagically fix it00:49
RyanPriorNope, didn't tell me to run a command.00:51
wastrelhrm01:17
wastrelmy laptop sound stuff isn't set up properly01:18
SeveredCrossDoes anyone else have an issue with X ignoring xorg.conf?01:19
SeveredCrossI want SHMConfig for Synaptics, and I have it in xorg.conf, but X totally ignores it.01:19
SeveredCrossI like the self-configuring 1.4 server, but that's a terrible regression.01:20
SeveredCrossLaunchpad has some related bugs but no workarounds.01:20
RAOFSeveredCross: X isn't ignoring *my* xorg.conf.01:22
SeveredCrossWeird.01:22
RAOFSeveredCross: Want to compare? :)01:22
SeveredCrossSure. Pastebin?01:22
SeveredCrosshttp://pastebin.ca/86927901:23
wastrelwhat's SHMConfig?01:23
RAOFhttp://cooperteam.net/xorg.conf :P01:23
scizzo-wastrel: google it...01:23
SeveredCrossSHMConfig enables a shared memory area for the Synaptics driver, so that userland applications can change touchpad preferences.01:23
scizzo-wastrel: its a synaptics config for X01:23
scizzo-wastrel: to use touchpad....01:23
SeveredCrossI think I'm missing ServerLayout.01:24
RAOFSeveredCross: Aaah.  It's probably ignoring your synaptics section because you don't reference it anywhere.01:24
wastreli have synaptics01:24
SeveredCrossHeh. Great minds think alike.01:24
RAOFAnd it might be using your mouse section for its input needs.01:24
wastrelbut i don't really need to configure it, the  defaults are fine01:24
RAOFYou can either try adding a ServerLayout, or remove your mouse section.01:25
SeveredCrossI just despise Tap to Click.01:25
RAOFAnd I like it :).01:25
* RAOF adds syndaemon control interface for gsynaptics to his TODO.01:26
scizzo-http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=168581&page=301:26
SeveredCrossOkay, the changes have been made, now it's time for an X restart.01:28
SeveredCrossMuch better. :)01:30
wastrelah tap to click01:30
wastreli added an option to turn that off once01:30
wastrelnow i have a thinkpad with the touchpoint thing so i don't use the touchpad normally except for scrolling01:30
SeveredCrossGSynaptics works fine for me. :) QSynaptics also works, but is not as nicely integrated.01:31
SeveredCrossWith syndaemon, it's perfect.01:31
RAOFIt shouldn't be too hard to add a little checkbox to gsynaptics with "disable touchpad while typing" and a delay thingy.01:31
SeveredCrossAlso, <3 radeonhd.01:32
SeveredCrossMaybe there's no 3D acceleration yet, but damn it's nice to be free from the clutches of fglrx.01:32
wastrelah that's the new radeon driver?01:32
SeveredCrossYup.01:32
SeveredCrossWorks great, except for a few minor things that aren't really visible.01:33
wastrelyeah i'm looking forward to that, my work computer has a radeon card01:33
SeveredCrossFor some insane reason it adds a lot of noise across the VT's, but they know that happens and are working on a fix, and there's no 3D acceleration which kinda sucks (I was looking forward to Compiz with a free driver) but that'll get worked out in time.01:33
cdm10Where'd the option to enable NTP go in the clock settings?01:50
cdm10Oh, it's in System>Admin>Time and Date. Why does the context menu of the clock applet no longer go to that?01:52
HellMindHow can I do to include a new jack version in Hardy release?01:53

ubotuSorry, I don't know anything about jackd - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi01:59
RAOFHellMind: In increasing order of effort and likelyhood of action: (1) file a "needs upgrade" bug against jack on launchpad.  (2) Find out whether Debian has a newer jack, and add that info to the needs-upgrade bug. (3a) if there is a newer debian version, work out whether the new debian version builds on Hardy, and ask for a sync (read the wiki!). (3b) Update the Debian package with the new jack version.02:00
RAOFHellMind: In any case, it's getting progressively more unlikely that jack will be updated - we're approaching feature freeze, so new upstream versions are soon going to require a very good reason to be accepted.02:01
cdm10Where should I report a problem with the time-admin program?02:01
cdm10I'm not sure what package it's in.02:01
HellMindRAOF Where is the wiki, and does it explain how to add a "needs upgrade" bug?02:07
RAOF!contribute02:08
ubotuTo contribute and help out with Ubuntu, see http://www.ubuntu.com/community/participate02:08
RAOFHellMind: But you really want to be looking at wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU02:09

BlackDiamondsisn't jack being replaced by pulseaudio ?02:21
BlackDiamondsalso I posted an email on the devel mailing list, how long should I wait before bugging for a reply ?02:21
BlackDiamondsit's a simple thing and I would like it to be done before the feature freeze02:21
DanaGJack and Pulseaudio actually have different purposes.02:22
DanaGOh yeah, I hate the new CFS scheduler.02:22
DanaGIt makes my Nice +19 and SCHED_IDLEPRIO folding@home processes take up half of my CPU time.02:22
DanaGIt's essentially IGNORING nice levels and IDLEPRIO.02:22
DanaGApparently, it's "by design".02:22
RyanPriorI'm having trouble with my ATI graphics card. I have fglrx installed, but the module is not being loaded and there is no entry for it in my xorg.conf02:23
BlackDiamondscan anyone answer my question about the mailing list ?02:23
DanaGIt almost seems like nice levels have been inverted....02:25
RAOFBlackDiamonds: That depends.  You posted to devel-discuss, yes?  THere'll be a bit of a ait for moderation (I think), then just wait, basically.02:25
DanaGmy nice -19 "cat /dev/null process is getting fr02:25
RAOFBlackDiamonds: What was the email?02:25
RyanPriorI think xorg is configuring my graphics card settings wrong. How do I fix a problem like that?02:26
RyanPriorMy xorg.conf is here: http://pastebin.ubuntu-nl.org/53108/02:26
BlackDiamondsRAOF I posted to devel02:28
BlackDiamondsnot devel-discuss02:28
RAOFAny particular reason?  devel-discuss is probably the more appropriate list.02:29
DanaGArgh, how is it that a +19 idle process is getting more priority than compiz, which is zero nice?02:29
BlackDiamondsoh shoot02:29
DanaGThat seems broken to me.02:29
BlackDiamondssome one told me the other day to post on devel02:29
RAOFOh?02:29
RAOFThey may have been right.02:29
RAOFHas your email cleared moderation?02:29
BlackDiamondsI think so02:30
BlackDiamondsit's in the archive02:30
RAOFRight.  So which one is it?02:30
BlackDiamondsSubject: Package linux-wlan-ng should be installed by default02:31
RAOFAh, that one.02:31
BlackDiamondsit would be really nice to see this fixed before the next alpha02:31
BlackDiamondsit's not very hard to do anyways, a simple change in the livecd builing and such02:32

DanaGUsed to be titled better.02:32
BlackDiamondsDanaG, isn't this an upstream bug ?02:32
DanaGIt's also in Ubuntu.02:32
RAOFBlackDiamonds: Ah, right.  That seems to make sense.  Maybe you can ask in #ubuntu-devel after another day or so.02:33
DanaGhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/17771302:33
ubotuLaunchpad bug 177713 in boinc "CFS in 2.6.24 kernel needs cpu_share adjustment for "niced" processes" [Medium,Confirmed]02:33
DanaGOddly, it says "is not in ubuntu".02:33
DanaGWhat's up with that?02:33
BlackDiamondsthank you RAOF02:33
BlackDiamondsI will pipe up in there in a day or so02:33
DanaGRunning folding@home even niced to +19 and idle priority is somehow still chopping my framerate in compiz-fusion in half.02:35
DanaGIt's also inducing a moderately irritating key lag.02:35
RyanPriorDanaG: Obviously that means you should't run folding@home. :-)02:37
DanaGNo, it means the 2.6.24 kernel's new scheduler is a regression.02:38

ZambeziIs there inbuilt encryption during installation in HH like Etch? (Asked it once, but got disconnected).15:18
alteregoliomy computer should be politically correct15:18
ccooke(Especially when there are actual *good* *technical* reasons not to use it already)15:18
ccookeZambezi: I don't believe it's an option on the installer, currently15:19
bardyrZambezi, there should be in the alternative cd15:19
ccookeah, nice15:19
bardyrdidnt it get added in gutsy?15:19
Zambezibardyr ccooke: Is it on GG too or just HH?15:19
kripkenHmm, wikipedia says the trial was on break until last week. So it should be running right now unless it was delayed.15:20
ZambeziI have FF right now.15:20
ccookeZambezi: Check the alternate install CD - I haven't used it myself.15:20
bardyrZambezi, i believe it was added into the gutsy alternative cd15:20

bardyrgeser, there is16:48
JoeLinux@bardyr: Thanks, it's downloading right now.16:49
JoeLinuxThe Tracker site doesn't seem to have any working links for ISO download.16:49

Oli``Does pulseaudio lag for anybody? If I change the volume in an application, or pause it, etc, it takes half a second or so to respond17:12
=== x-spec-t is now known as Spec
=== Am|NickTaken is now known as Amaranth
kripkenOli``: in what apps does this occur?17:39
Oli``kripken: It seems to effect all streams.17:40
kripkenOli``: Then no, it works fine over here. Pause/restart in totem is instantaneous (VLC lags on some media... but it always did, no idea why)17:40
Oli``My bad. Totem works fine. I think it's perhaps effecting ALSA applications that are running into an ALSA sink in PA17:42
Oli``Amarok (for example) is one such app. Xine, another.17:43
kripkenThat might be. I don't have Amarok here to test. But Totem and xmms are fine17:44
mrtimdogI've a very hot laptop! Does one of powernowd, powersaved adjust the fan speed as well as the cpu freq scaling, or is there another deamon/kernel mod involved?18:36
mrtimdogWhat's the best way of stopping apt installing recommended pkgs when installing a package? I've set the aptitude option to not do it, but it still does.19:09
silentmrtimdog, fan speed is an acpi function, and installing recommended packages is a good idea, as dependencies come into play19:14
silentmrtimdog, it's not as if the recommended packages really take up all that much space19:15
mrtimdogThanks, silent. So the temp control (via ACPI) is not controlled by software?19:17
silentmrtimdog, it can be, by editing config files, but I have to go for nwo19:17
mrtimdogI know recommended pkgs are a good idea, but I've 4G for my OS (exluding /home) and it's nearly full. Anyone else any ideas on how to configure apt not to install recommended packages?19:19
bardyrmrtimdog, software sources and uncheck recommended19:25
mrtimdogHi bardyr: No, that's for enabling/disabling the repo for recommended updates.19:26
bardyroh, yea :/19:27
mrtimdogJust found the solution. Had to remove the config file /etc/apt/apt.cond.d/01ubuntu installed by apt which contains the config for these specific options :)19:27
mrtimdogThanks for looking though :)19:28

nubbeWill Hardy be a good choice to switch to amd64 from 32-bit for a regular desktop user, web (flash and such stuff)?19:36
bardyryea19:38
bardyrnubbe, all the flash thingies and other needed 32bit apps are installed so its almost no hassle19:39
nubbeThere has been problems with oo.org, some printers-drivers also, in the past19:41
nubbebut I will probably give it a go this time, (again)  :)19:41

bardyris there a way i can get amarok to use pulseaudio?23:19
bardyrand/or gstreamer?23:19
RAOFUuuuum.23:33
RAOFbardyr: So, pulseaudio.  I *believe* there's a pulseaudio xine plugin.  Using amarok's xine engine should allow you to choose that.  Maybe.23:34
RAOFbardyr: And I think Amarok has a gstreamer backend, you'd just need to select it in amarok's preferences.23:34
BlackDiamondsRAOF I'm a little confused about audio in ubuntu23:43
BlackDiamondswhat does gstreamer, xine, pulseaudio and jack do ?23:43
RAOFWell.23:43
BlackDiamondswait, I mixed that up23:44
BlackDiamondsgstreamer, xine and pulseaudio and jack are two different things23:44
RAOFGStreamer & Xine are audio/video pipeline systems.  You feed in some a/v stuff (in whatever format) and they spit out a/v stuff in a different form.23:44
RAOFYeah.23:44
BlackDiamondspulseaudio and jack are audio daemons right ?23:45
BlackDiamondsthey sit on top of alsa ?23:46
RAOFYes.23:46
RAOFAnd, in the case of Pulse, below alsa as well :)23:46
BlackDiamondswoha wut23:46
RAOFSo, pulseaudio and jack are (partially) about the problem "how do I make this raw audio stream come out my speakers?"23:47
RAOF...in such a way that I can mix various streams together, have accurate timings (for lip-synching, for example), etc.23:47
BlackDiamondsah23:48
RAOFPulseaudio is more than that; it also solves "I want to be able to associate this sound sample with $ERROR_CONDITION, and be able to say "play $ERROR_CONDITION""23:48
BlackDiamondswhen I was experimenting with gentoo and slackware, I had to use some crazy alsa stuff with voodo magic to get aMSN to give me a chime while I was playing music in Amarok23:49
RAOFThe "perfect pulse setup" includes using a pulseaudio alsa plugin.  So programs that use alsa go Program -> ALSA (default hw) -> pulse -> ALSA (actual sound hw)23:50
articpenguin3800do i report kubuntu bugs to kde.net or launchpad23:54
RAOFLaunchpad.23:54
articpenguin3800does upstream mean kde.org23:55
RAOFYou may also want to file them at kde.org as well, once it has been determined that it's not a bug specific to kubuntu.23:55
RAOFYes, "upstream" means "kde.org".  At least for the KDE packages :)23:55
BlackDiamondsarticpenguin3800 I think you can file at both and then link the bugs using launchpad ?23:58
BlackDiamondsalso RAOF, is it possible with pulseaudio to do what vista does with audio ?23:58
BlackDiamondswhich is control each apps audio ?23:58
RAOFBlackDiamonds: For me to respond to that I'd need to know what vista does with audio :)23:58
BlackDiamondslike you can mute MSN, and IE but keep your music player up23:58
BlackDiamondsapp specific audio control23:59
RAOFYes.23:59
RAOFYou want the padevchooser (and associated) package(s).23:59
