BlackDiamondsthanks a lot RAOF, I'll try it on my hardy machine00:04
Spenser309Hi everyone,  I'm having this error while trying to install ubuntu-xen-desktop: ubuntu-xen-desktop:  "Depends: linux-xen  but it is not installable"00:28
Spenser309linux-xen is not a package?00:29
=== crd1b is now known as crdlb
WorkingOnWiseanyone using google calendar in the latest evolution?00:32
Spenser309WorkingOnWise:  I just tried it after you mentioned it but could not get it to work00:42
WorkingOnWiseSpenser309: how did u try it? I am not clear on how to add a google calendar.00:43
WorkingOnWiseI have read about how to do it, but it was for 2.14 and 2.2000:44
Spenser309open evo, go to the calenders tab00:44
Spenser309WorkingOnWise: right click and select add calender00:44
Spenser309WorkingOnWise:  You will have the option for a google calender]00:45
WorkingOnWiseso its the same then. did u get the private url from your account?00:45
Spenser309It doesnt appear to need it00:45
Spenser309It just asks for a username00:45
WorkingOnWisethats odd....00:46
Spenser309its not an ical import anymore00:47
Spenser309it least it appears00:47
crimsunheh, lennart just tagged PulseAudio 0.9.9.00:47
Spenser309nvm i just got it working00:48
WorkingOnWiseme too....00:48
Spenser309nvm00:48
Spenser309sorry00:48
Spenser309thought i had it00:48
WorkingOnWisewow did they clean that up!00:48
WorkingOnWiseu dont have it working?00:48
Spenser309im not sure any time i click the icon it reasks for my password00:48
WorkingOnWisedid u check "Use SSL" where u put in your user name?00:49
Spenser309i tried that the first time00:50
WorkingOnWiseI have all my gcal events in evo now...sweet00:50
Spenser309but this time it didnt work00:50
WorkingOnWisehmmm...00:50
Spenser309thats awesome man00:50
Spenser309i think it has to do with the fact that I have multiple calenders in google00:51
WorkingOnWiseit may be. i only have one. do u have multiple in the same account?00:52
Spenser309yes00:52
WorkingOnWisetry matching the name of the cal in evo to the name in gcal maybe?00:53
WorkingOnWisebtw, it is 2 way now also...00:53
Spenser309ill give it a shot00:53
WorkingOnWiseso I no longer miss Outlook! Weeeeeee00:53
Spenser309lol that caused a hard lock and crash of evolution00:54
Spenser309that def means im getting somewhere00:54
WorkingOnWiselol!!00:55
siriusnovaGuys anyone here know anything about /srv vs /var/www for serving files via a httpd?00:56
siriusnovawhat's more "standard" and "appropriate"00:56
Spenser309 /var00:56
Spenser309truth is i dont think there is a standard00:56
siriusnovaSpenser - but doesn't /var contain other kinds of data as well00:56
Spenser309but most people use /var00:56
siriusnovalike tmp00:56
Spenser309yes00:57
siriusnovaso why use var00:57
siriusnovainstead of /srv ?00:57
Spenser309ok thats fine00:57
WorkingOnWiseSpenser309: I just tried to make a new cal in the gcal web interface, and twice it errored with "Oops, we couldn't save changes, please try again in a few minutes" so there may be an issue at google causing your troubles.00:57
siriusnovalol i dunno im just asking00:57
siriusnova:X00:57
Spenser309lol00:57
Spenser309i know i just think that the question is more a matter of personal taste00:57
WorkingOnWiseIsnt there a Linux Standards Base (LSB) for those types of issues?00:58
siriusnovai dunno it just feels wrong to put everything in /var/www when /srv would be more appropriate for serving files00:58
siriusnovaconsidering how there is /var/log and /var/tmp etc..00:58
siriusnova /var should be for changing or "variable files" no?00:58
Spenser309 well you can just put the cgi portion in /var and the static content in /srv00:59
phoulAnyone else notice nautilus is broken >.>00:59
RAOFYou mean, Places->Network, for example?00:59
phoulI mean everything in general00:59
phoul:)00:59
phoulNautilus isnt coming up for me, No icons on the desktop. If i try to copy an icon from the menu it tries to put it in "/", The actual file manager wont come up at all01:00
phoullol01:00
siriusnovaim reading the File System Standards and it says /srv for all served data01:00
siriusnovanothing about /var/www01:00
siriusnovaso why does my httpd use /var/www by defaut01:01
siriusnova:X01:01
WorkingOnWiseI thing /var/www is a "standard" by Apache maybe?01:01
burnercause everyone uses /var/www01:01
siriusnovaweird01:01
WorkingOnWiseand it works....01:01
siriusnovai guess so01:02
siriusnova:S01:02
WorkingOnWisething...what a dork am I...think.....01:02
burneri'm all for change if it makes sense :)01:02
siriusnovawell i think it does make sense01:02
Spenser309burner: look at gobolinux01:02
burnerf the fedora and suse people if they complain that ubuntu is weird01:02
siriusnovai mean /var contains stuff like logs01:02
siriusnovaand /var/tmp01:02
WorkingOnWiseubuntu is wierd....01:02
siriusnovadoes it make sense to put your html files in the same dir?01:02
phoulYeah ubuntu really is weired lol01:03
siriusnovaor instead use /srv :S01:03
siriusnovawhich makes sense as your system is "serving" files01:03
Spenser309nah ubuntu is debian with a cool name01:03
phoulDamn nautilus lol01:03
phoulIm sure it will be fixed soon enough though01:03
* phoul shrugs01:03
WorkingOnWiseSpenser309: I have many ppl tell me its wierd. they see my windows go up in flames as I close them....01:04
Spenser309WorkingOnWise:  lol well thats not default01:04
phoulit should be01:04
phoul>.>01:04
Spenser309I wish i could get compiz working again on my dualhead01:05
phoulI wish nautilus would stop being a biznitch01:05

Spenser309phoul: did you run a sudo killall nautilus01:05
phoulIm going to bet though, An update will fix it today or tomorrow01:05
WorkingOnWiseI wish I didn't have to install the Nvidia drivers every time i rebooted!01:05
phoulSpenser309, yeah, donno how much good it did lol01:06
Spenser309try starting nautilus in a term see what happens01:06
phoulafter a killall it works, But if you try to move a file with it it freezes up again01:06
Spenser309phoul: do you think you should file a bug?01:07
phoulLike that01:07
phoullol01:07
Spenser309lol01:07
phoulI think i will just... not mess with it, Nautilus isnt a big deal to me seeing as i manage my files via gnome-terminal anyways01:08
phoulit will come back when ever they fix it01:08
phoullol01:08
Spenser309lol01:08
phoulIm sure its gotta be up there in priority01:08
phoulright next to the crab hats01:09
phoulThis might be a good time to try out kde4 though...01:09
siriusnovaI think Ubuntu should follow the standards and move /var/www to /srv01:09
phoulmeh01:09
siriusnovait makes much more sense01:09
siriusnovainstead of just blindly following debian01:09

Spenser309you will like there directory structure01:12
siriusnovagobolinux uses its own fs standards i know01:12
siriusnovasay im compiling my own apps where should i install them to. /usr/bin ?01:25
siriusnovai mean what should be install root /usr ?01:25
blkorpheussiriusnova, you might want to catch up on some basic linux reading01:32
blkorpheusthis is not the place01:32
siriusnovawell i would except each distro has its own prefix01:33
siriusnovasome do it in /usr, others do it in /opt01:33
siriusnova:S01:33
siriusnovai was just wondering what was appropriate for Ubuntu01:33
siriusnovasome do it in /usr/local01:33
blkorpheusthis is not the channel regardless01:37
siriusnovaok my apologies01:38
blkorpheusdon't mention it01:38

DanaG(And I must've accidentally bumped caps.)02:36
RAOFHeh.02:37
RAOFAnything particularly shiny in it?02:37
Spenser309I'm having a some trouble.  Both virtualbox-ose and ubuntu-xen-desktop cannot be installed in due to a lack of virtualbox-ose-modules and linux-xen packages.02:40
Spenser309How can I fix this?02:40
RAOFTried kvm? :)02:40
Spenser309What front end can I use to control it?02:40
Spenser309virt-manager doesnt have the options i need02:41
RAOFOh.  _Frontend_.  Ah...02:41
Spenser309I need to be able to have two nics.02:41
RAOFOh.  Well, kvm does support that, but you'll need to check out man qemu to actually configure it.02:41
blkorpheusvirtualbox02:41
blkorpheusrunning it fine02:42
Spenser309really?02:42
RAOFblkorpheus: Except for the packaged kernel modules, apparently :)02:42
blkorpheusyou have to compile that02:42
Spenser309I'd love to build the modules but that requires the virtualbox-ose package doesn it02:42
blkorpheus/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup02:43
blkorpheusSpenser309, no02:43
blkorpheusjust install the app02:43
blkorpheusdone02:43
blkorpheusI only had to compile the module if I change kernels02:44
Spenser309the problem is that the kernel im running (2.6.24) doesnt have kernel modules prebuilt for it in hardy02:44
blkorpheusstill using the old -3-server kernel02:44
blkorpheuscourse not, no worries02:44
DanaGOh yeah, by my using a question mark, I was implying, "New version?" as a question.02:45
DanaGTherefore, I don't know what's new.02:45
RAOFDanaG: Heh.  Right.  There is a new version, not yet in Hardy.02:45
Spenser309then how do create the kernel modules?02:45
DanaGOne cooooool thing about VirtualBox: support for write-through to real hard disks.02:45
blkorpheushttp://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads02:45
blkorpheusSpenser309, you don't, and if you need to, I gave you the string above02:46
Spenser309hmm,  so in order this is what I need to do in order to install virtualbox-ose.  install virtualbox-ose-source in synaptic, run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup.  install virtualbox-ose02:47
Spenser309btw: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup doesnt work: no such file02:48
Spenser309I cant install the virtualbox-ose because of a dependancy on  virtualbox-ose-modules02:49
Spenser309which does not exist02:49
DanaG2008-01-24: PulseAudio 0.9.9 has been released. The only change from 0.9.8 is a fix for CVE-2008-0008. An upgrade is highly recommended.02:49

DanaGaah.02:49
Spenser309anyways i still have the problem02:53
Spenser309blkorpheus:  do you have an idea about how I can install the package virtualbox-ose despite the fact that its dependenvy's are not fully met?02:55
wastrelmmm fun i booted and didn't have nautilus today... i guess the package got removed in the last update?  i should read the thingy more carefully :]03:09
JSharpalso, notice about the wacom driver issue03:12
JSharpthe latest driver causes xorg to crash when enabled in the config when using the radeon open driver, but it seems to be fixed with the latest development release from the linux wacom driver project03:13
JSharppackage needs updating by someone who's packaging foo exceeds my own03:13
BlackDiamondsJSharp, does it hve a maintainer ?03:14
BlackDiamondsotherwise file a bug and bother the motu guys03:14
JSharpI'm not sure, it got updated when the xorg 7.3 update 'completely' broke it03:15
* JSharp checks03:15
JSharpBlackDiamonds, I'm a bit new to launchpad... how do I tell if a package has a maintainer?03:23
BlackDiamondslaunchpad would not contain that information I think03:23
BlackDiamondsgo to packages.ubuntu.com03:23
JSharpokay03:24
BlackDiamondsthen find your pacakge03:24
BlackDiamondsscroll down to the changelog03:24
BlackDiamondsview that and find who has been making all the changes03:24
JSharphere? http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/w/wacom-tools/wacom-tools_0.7.9.3-2ubuntu2/changelog03:25
JSharplooks like that's the source package change log03:25
jjlworkupgraded to Hardy and it broke my wireless using iwl3945, in restricted drivers manager shows enable but not available can anyone help?03:26
BlackDiamondsyeah03:26
BlackDiamondslooks like Timo Aaltonen is the maintainer03:26
RAOFjjlwork: You no longer need restricted drivers.  You *should* be able to use iwl3945, which is now in the mainline kernel, + the free firmware which is in linux-ubuntu-modules.03:27
JSharpokay, I'll drop them an e-mail. Or, what's the protocol?03:27
BlackDiamondsI would make a bug and then request them to look at it03:28
RAOFJSharp: The protocol is generally to go to www.launchpad.net and file a bug against the package :)03:28
BlackDiamondsRAOF, how does one ping another person via launchpad ?03:28
RAOFBlackDiamonds: One doesn't.  Why would you want to?03:29
BlackDiamondscan you assign them to the bug or subscribe them ?03:29
BlackDiamondshow else would they be aware of the bug ?03:29
RAOFBlackDiamonds: You *can*, but they are likely to kill you if you do :)03:29
JSharpRAOF, <G> okay03:29
JSharpheh03:29
RAOFIf they're interested in that package, they may well have set themselves as a bug contact (I've done this for a couple of packages).03:29
RAOFOtherwise, there's a whole group of non-devs (ubuntu-bugsquad) whose job it is to check out bugs, confirm that they're in a state that it's worth bringing them to the attention of a dev, and then marking appropriately.03:30
jjlworkRAOF: it auto configured the only reason I upgraded was because hardy fixed my fn buttons. What can I do to configure it properly?03:30
RAOFjjlwork: Then it might be a bug.  Upgrading to hardy to *fix* things is a bad idea at this point. :)03:31
blkorpheuslol03:32
blkorpheusso true03:32
blkorpheusonly minor breakage for me03:32
blkorpheusI want my damn weather applet back though:-P03:32
RAOFFor example, we've just broken nautilus.  By design.03:32
jjlworkRAOF: I know that, lol, but I figure if the only issue I am having is my wireless *should* be able to do something to fix it03:32
RAOFjjlwork: Yeah.  The trick is working out why.  Basically, you'd want to pastebin things like your dmesg log.03:33
RAOFOk, so it's not quite breaking nautilus by design.  But the current nautilus doesn't do everything the old nautilus did.03:34
blkorpheusI like runing develop version03:34
blkorpheuseveryday is xmas03:34
blkorpheusalwasy new updates03:35
blkorpheusthen if something breaks03:35
blkorpheusI have a new puzzle03:35
blkorpheuswheeeee03:35
jjlworkdmesg looks the same as it does in 7.10, I did notice a difference in iwconfig it lists it as wlan0_rename rather that eth103:35
RAOFYou were using iwl in 7.10?03:36
RAOFWhen it wasn't working very well, at least for me?03:36
jjlworkyes, working perfect in 7.103:36
phoulDoes anyone know how to burn a bootable iso that uses .ccd .img .sub03:38
phoulI dled a iso image and i need to burnz it for school but im not sure how to use this, THey are all for 1 image03:38
r00723r0Hey.03:39
r00723r0I'm having issues mounting my iPod.03:39
RAOFjjlwork: You probably weren't using the iwl drivers then :).  You were probably using the ipw3945 drivers from the restricted manager.03:40
jjlworkhow can I tell03:41
jjlworkis there a command I can use that tells me what I was using?03:41
RAOFNo, not really.03:41
RAOFWhat's the actual problem, again?03:42
jjlworkI am on the wirelss right now but I selected 2.6.22-14-generic when booting (I think that means I am using 7.10 now instead right?)03:42
RAOFo/` Is it wicked not to care? o/`03:42
RAOFjjlwork: No, that means you're using the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel.  Everything else will still be from Hardy.03:42
r00723r0Anyone know?03:43
jjlworkahhh, well then it works with the older kernel but not with the new one03:43
jjlworkdoes that help narrow it down?03:43
RAOFjjlwork: Not really.  Do you have linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-4-generic installed?03:44
DanaG"Unable to mount the volume 'Hitachi'.03:50
DanaGMount point /media/HFS+ does not exist.03:50
DanaGWTF?03:50
DanaGFor one, it's not the right place to mount it; for another, it should CREATE the mount point!03:51
jjlworkis there a command that I can type that tells me if I have  linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-4-generic installed?03:53
JSharpokay, I reported that bug <G> so hopefully it'll get fixed before release <G>03:54
RAOFjjlwork: "aptitude show linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-4-generic" should work.03:56
jjlworkthanks, yes it is installed (I will add that command to my repetoire:)03:58
RAOFOk.03:58
RAOFSo, again, what is the actual problem?03:58
jjlworkWhen I use the new kernel I can't get wirelss to work, it looks like it is working fine, but can't detect or join any networks03:59
RAOFie: what part of the wireless stack fails to work - wlan0_rename isn't created?  doesn't show up in network manager?04:00
jjlworkit shows in network manage and wlan0_rename is created and looks fine in dmesg04:00
RAOFOk.  It just doesn't see any networks?04:00
jjlworkit just doesn't *do* anything04:00
jjlworkyes04:00
jjlworkand I can't manually tell it to join them either04:01
RAOFOk.04:01
RAOFWell, I'd suggest just filing a bug.04:01
jjlworkthanks, did that already, I'll wait and see then :)04:02
RAOFFair enough.04:02
jjlworkany suggestions on what to put in the bug report to help the dev team make sense of what I am trying to tell them?04:04
jjlworkall I put was that it wan't working lol04:04
RAOFWell, dmesg logs are good.  The versions of everything.  *Precisely* what you've tried.04:05
jjlworkby versions of everyhting do you mean pasting the results of apt-show-versions04:06
RAOFI'm not sure what that output would be, I've never used it.04:07
RAOFWhat I meant was the version of everything vaguely related: the linux-image package, linux-ubuntu-modules, network manager, nm-applet, etc.04:07
DanaGOh yeah, to fix the wlan0_rename naming, look in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules04:09
wastrelheh wlan0_rename i kindof like it04:11
r00723r0I'm having issues mounting my iPod. Anyone know how to fix this?04:53
RAOF!doesntwork | r00723r004:56
ubotur00723r0: Doesn't work is a strong statement. Does it sit on the couch all day? Does it want more money? Is it on IRC all the time? Please be specific! Examples of what doesn't work tend to help too.04:56
r00723r0RAOF, it isn't mounting, period.04:56
RAOFWhen you...?04:56
r00723r0My iPod just has the charging thing on it.04:56
r00723r0When I do anything.04:56
RAOFSuch as?04:57
r00723r0Try to mount it, reboot, sudo everything previously mentioned.04:57
RAOFAnd by "try to mount", you presumably mean running "mount <someopts>" from a terminal?04:57
RAOFSo, things to do: post *exactly* what you try (this probably means pasting in the command line you're using).04:58
RAOFAnd what happens: since it's not getting mounted, there'll be some error messages.  What is the terminal output, and what gets added to dmesg (pastebin these).04:59

mrtimdogslytherin: I'd guess it's something to do with the nautilus work going on, they're working on it as far as I know.13:40
cavediverHi guys. I have noticed a change in Nautilus from 7.10 and that is if i type ssh://server in Hary it mounts as SFTP but in 7.10 it just browses the file system with sshfs (i think) The point is, SFTP seems much slower. Transfer of my 10GB backup takes 23 hours insted of 4 with 7.10. Anyone know if I can revert to sshfs in nauilus ?13:40
slytherinmrtimdog: hm, I will wait for few days13:40

blkorpheusfrom your comment , there is no telling what could be the issue20:15
blkorpheusyou will either need to drill down what else could be wrong20:15
blkorpheusor reinstall 7.10, and don't upgrade again until you know what you are doing20:15
blkorpheussome ppl do not have what it takes to run development software20:16
sarthorblkorpheus> there was cd drive in my laptop. but not now. its out of order now.20:16
blkorpheusagain "out of order" says nothing really20:16
blkorpheusspecifics are needed20:17
Pici!doesntwork20:17
ubotuDoesn't work is a strong statement. Does it sit on the couch all day? Does it want more money? Is it on IRC all the time? Please be specific! Examples of what doesn't work tend to help too.20:17
blkorpheusnice20:17
sarthorStrange. Its not my maternal language.20:17
blkorpheusmy bad20:20
scizzo-sarthor: to put it simple.....if you are not custome to error search or to look for problems before asking it is not a good idea to upgrade to Hardy20:20
sarthorDear, if some one dont want to help, so he can stay silent. i think its better, Can you speek pashto/urdu/punjabi, because you dont know this languge, So any style of you asking in these language will be apriciatted20:20

sarthorblkorpheus> no problem. i can understand that i am unable to explain my self, but i cam compell to do so.20:24
affluxI can't really tell what's the cause, but I think its the kernel as it's been faster with 2.6.22-1420:24
affluxbut you get used to it ;)20:24
blkorpheussarthor, you get an "A" for effort20:24

blkorpheusWHY would they put tracker in by default escapes me20:27
affluxas I said, 2.6.22-14 went fine... and I don't want to report a bug like "system is slow, i have no idea!" against ubuntu ;)20:27

Assidokay quick question20:38
N1ci meant , i want to have access too alll Hardy Heron pkgs (.DEBS) like Mesa 7.0.2 .deb20:39
Assidi know hardy is like bleeding edge and everything..20:39
DanaGGack, I had to sysrq-k Xorg because something broke my keyboard.20:39
Assidbut doesnt it feel strange that we have things breaking when we already have PREVIOUS versions that are proper20:39
DanaGIt kept spamming left-arrow, and the ctrl key didn't work.20:39
Assidwhy not use older base.. and use newer versions of the softwares20:39
blkorpheusN1c, would'nt the packages be where they always are?20:40
N1cammm , where?!20:40
N1cin my cd?!20:40

iyigungrej:  thanks, i'll check that20:46
scizzo-N1c: with all honesty it does sound like you need to read about the apt-get system and how .debs works20:46

scizzo-N1c: stop flaming about problems....read the topic20:49
N1cits aliitle kind of bug20:49
N1cscizzo i am not flaming =) , i am just telling him what he will find20:49
DrPHPpersonally i think hardy should solve the problems i had with gutsy20:49
DrPHPspecially if its LTS20:50
Trewasfirefox3 is in hardy, but obviously not the default browser20:50
DrPHPcompiz for example.. issues with that20:50
N1cDrPHP , you wont be happy with it , but i hope Alpha 4 will do it20:50
N1cDrPHP do you have X3100?20:50
blkorpheusFF3 works for me without issue20:51
DrPHPnah .. dell d600 with mobility firegl 900020:51
scizzo-N1c: actually you are......since you are pointing at certain problems also knowing that hardy is a development release state.....please stop pointing at the most obvious problems...it is a development release and if you are not comfortable with the apt-get system, error searching, debugging and .deb handling then you should not run it....20:51
DrPHPerr.. someone should look into that brightness jumps20:52
N1cscizzo thats why i am building my programs from source =)20:52
N1cI never trust any apt-get install nor emerge or any other programs for installing programs in any OS20:52
N1cOut of the topic20:53
N1cWhere i can find the .DEBS for Hardy? ;-)20:53
