holaDioxin: root?00:00
Taggnostris there a way to set konqueror as default?00:00
nosrednaekim!dolphin00:00
ubotuDolphin, or more properly D3lphin, is the new default file manager for Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. If you would like to make Konqueror your default file manager again, go to Konqueror - Settings menu - Configure Konqueror - File Associations and change the association for inode/directory and inode/system_directory to Konqueror at the top rather than Dolphin.00:00
DioxinHola: I'm afraid I'm out of my depth there00:00
Dioxinhola: is the drive mounted?00:01
drcodebtw: how can I switch languge by keyboard?00:01
holaDioxin: i have a host with kub 7.10 with all drive mounted and i have a virtual machine (clinet) with no mount device00:02
SlimeyPete!nfs00:02
ubotunfs is the network file system. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo for information on installing and configuring NFS.00:02
DioxinHola:I would guess either.. you dont have permission to access them... or enviroment isnt set correctly... best ask someone else tho00:03
holaDioxin: on client they are not mounted because i dont know how to do it.....nfs?00:05
phoenixzHi there, Im trying to automount a win2k3 share in kubuntu in the fstab using a credentials file for security but when I try to mount the dir, the mount command hangs.. Any idea what might be the cause? dmesg is not saying anything, the command is simply stalled00:09
dappermuisphoenixz: a mount command usually stall when its having problems reading the partition00:10
dappermuisthats been my experience00:10
ubuntuwhat do i have to tybe in console for adjusting the Xserver nu_*like it is at the basic installing}00:11
=== ubuntu is now known as muhkuh
phoenixzdappermuis, well.. it mounted without problems 5 mins ago when I was _not_ using the credentials file.00:11
nosrednaekimthen why are you using the credentials file?00:12
muhkuhwhat do i have to tybe in console for adjusting the Xserver nu_*like it is at the basic installing}00:12
muhkuhit should check the hole system new00:13
dappermuisphoenixz: like nosrednaekimsaid, there's your problem00:13
dappermuismuhkuh: i know what you're talking about, but i just can't remember the command00:13
* dappermuis thinks00:13
lizhey all, when I try signing it to administrator mode it says "conversation with su failed" What's that??? Can anyone help???00:13
muhkuhholz sh...00:13
muhkuh``00:13
nosrednaekimliz: in kde4?00:14
dappermuismuhkuh: try dpkg-reconfigure xserver00:14
muhkuhi did00:14
phoenixznosrednaekim, the machine is used by multiple users, its for security, I dont want passwords flying around00:14
dappermuismuhkuh: try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org00:14
muhkuhit doesn|t work00:14
lizyes in kde4 nosrenaekim00:14
nosrednaekimphoenixz: right00:14
phoenixzdappermuis, I think my problem is there as well, but.. how can I fix it?00:14
nosrednaekimliz: you need to run any admin apps from a konsole with "kdesudo appname" due to kde4's kdesu not using sudo00:14
muhkuhit is because that missunderstood mz grapic card .....00:15
phoenixznosrednaekim, dappermuis, its only a credentials file.. just another place where the user+pass are located..00:15
dappermuisphoenixz: ya i know - i've never worked with a credentials file though, so i wouldn't know where to start looking00:15
muhkuhhow can i let the szstem check the grapic card00:15
lizso it would be kdesudo networksettings?00:16
dappermuismuhkuh: try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org00:16
muhkuhi did that does not work00:16
dappermuismuhkuh: what does it say?00:17
muhkuhi even installed the x new00:17
muhkuhsomething like fatal error00:18
lizcan some sort of upgrade fix that?.... I used it a few minutes ago fine then when I tried again is when that error showed00:18
dappermuisliz: i used to get that error a long time ago...i found that either just waiting, or restarting usually fixed it00:18
muhkuhit worked till i did reconfigure00:19
muhkuhi did that cause i wanted to plaz a game whic wasn|t working00:19
lizI was thinking of restarting :) I sure do hope time will fix it dappermuis00:19
muhkuhlinux really isn|t supposed to run games00:20
dappermuisliz: it should do...especially if it was working before00:20
g2g591muhkuh: there are a few decent games for linux, Tremulous and warzone2100 being two00:20
lizI have another question... in konsole how do you type a new line under the one u just typed??00:21
muhkuhzeah zeah and if i trz to run it i will sonn sit at installing the hole thing new00:21
dappermuisliz: what you mean? like enter 2 commands?00:21
SlimeyPeteliz: you don't. You just hit enter and then put in a new line. Or do you mean in vi?00:21
muhkuhlike i have to if i don|t get it back00:21
lizoh ok thx slimeypete00:22
tininHi, is kde4 avaliable for ppc?00:22
lizI dont know if u can type 2 commands... I'm new at this00:23
SlimeyPeteliz: you'll get the hang of it with practice :)00:23
muhkuhi will only lose 60GB^^00:23
Dioxinif you need to type two commands try using /00:23
Dioxin; even00:23
dappermuisliz: if you want you can type two commands on one line if you seperate them with a ;00:23
muhkuhme dummz just made a single root partition.....00:24
Dioxinbut you can also use | if you want the commands to operate on the same inputs00:24
lizoh cool, thx dappermuis, I wrote that down :)00:24
limachey, how can I copy from a cd using k3b having only one cd-drive00:24
limac?00:24
drcodein kubuntu how can I switche between two lang?00:24
drcodeI have en and heb00:24
dappermuisliz: sure, np00:24
limaccopy cd00:24
dappermuislimac: check the option to "create image only" first00:24
dappermuislimac: then burn the cd image afterwards00:25
limacdappermuis: allrihgt, thank you very much :)00:25
limacdappermuis: wher is that option?00:25
limacwhere00:25
lizthx much everyone, you'll probably see me again..... and again.... and again... :)00:26
imekHey, anyone know where I can find the settings for multimedia keyboards in KDE? I want to change the volume control to control PCM, and reduce the step size.00:26
limacdappermuis: nm, I found it! thanks btw00:26

dappermuisbye liz00:26
muhkuhif i would deinstall the hole xserver and get it new would it check mz szstem or will it have the same config as now_00:27
Dioxinif i wanted to harass peeps on irc about bash scripts where is the best place to go? :P00:28
to0omhi all00:28
Dioxinhello00:28
to0omi've got a problem: i have an external usb device which i'd like to mount to /home at boot time00:29
to0omso i specified it in my fstab as follows: "/dev/sdb1 /home           ext3    auto,hotplug,defaults        0       0"00:29
to0omah, without hotplug: "/dev/sdb1 /home           ext3    auto,defaults        0       0"00:29
muhkuhhow ca i COMPLETLY remove  the Xserver00:30
to0omso why isn't the device mounted automatically at boot time?00:30
to0omthe option "auto" should normally do the trick, but it doesn't00:30
to0omthe device doesn't mount00:30
Dr_willistry a 'sudo mount -a'  see if mounts then00:31
Dr_willisor gives an error message00:31
val0does anyone know of any other utils except acetone and poweriso to open .daa files?00:31
to0omDr_willis: it does when i do sudo mount -a, but i'd like it to mount automatically00:31
Dioxincant you place sudo mount -a into the start up script?00:32
Dr_willisthat is mounting it autopmatically.  when the system boots up - it basicially does a 'sudo mount -a'00:32
muhkuhhow ca i COMPLETLY remove  the Xserver ?00:32
to0omDr_willis: mounting it by hand after boot works fine00:32
Dr_willisIf you are saying its NOT mounting at boot up that is..  Theres somthing.. odd going on.00:32
to0omDioxin: that's what ubuntu does automatically, all devices are mounted which are in the fstab00:32
tekteenmuhkuh: sudo apt-get xserver-xorg.conf00:33
to0ombut usb devices obviously don't work00:33
Dr_willisexample minimal fstab entry -->  /dev/hdd1 /Public ext3 defaults 0 000:33
tekteenmuhkuh: oops00:33
Dr_willismounts automatically. if its USB - THEN thats a whole nother issue.00:33
tekteensudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg.conf00:33
muhkuhi have to remove it first00:33
muhkuhaaah00:33
tekteenmuhkuh: why00:33
muhkuh^^00:33
to0omDr_willis: any suggestions?00:33
Dr_willisits possible its not seeing the usb device when the mounting stuff is ran.00:33
tekteenIt is only good for servers not to have x00:34
Dr_willisput the mount command in rc.local perhaps00:34
muhkuhcause i don|t get a GUI cause it figured out the wrong grapic card00:34
tekteenmuhkuh: ok00:34
tekteendo not run that command00:34
muhkuhwhz00:34
to0omDr_willis: when is rc.local executed?00:34
tekteensudo apt-get --purge xserver-xorg.conf would do it BUT...00:34
tekteenthere is a command to reconfig xorg00:35
tekteenas if it were just being installed00:35
muhkuhbut i ran the reconfig00:35
muhkuhand that is what it chrashed00:35
tekteensudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.conf00:35
tekteenok00:35
tekteensudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg.conf00:36
to0omDr_willis: i'll try that with rc.local00:36

ubotuTo install Flash see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/Flash - Flash 9 is now available in dapper-backports and edgy-backports - See also !Restricted and !Gnash01:29
ubotuThe Flash plugin installation is currently broken. This is due to Adobe changing the tar file that the package downloads. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=636397 if you need to fix this immediately, but it's recommended to wait for an official fix.01:29

jhend60so the module menu should fix this but i cant see it03:12
jhend60yes that is true03:12
BluesKajVeovis, at this point kde4 seems to be quite hardware dependent, the resulting ease or use or probs stem from your particular setup from what i've been seeing and hearing.03:12
VeovisBluesKaj: actually i'm on a 6 year old dell latitude and while i don't have to much eye-candy, it runs great03:13

VeovisBluesKaj: well that was kinda the point.  it is far from complete (it has almost no customizability, which is what i hate about Gnome) but it's making good progress and i like what i'm seeing so far03:15
BluesKajVeovis, very mac-ish03:16
VeovisBluesKaj: what makes you say that? because of the widgets?03:16

Yesterday I was told to try to install the basic version (mini cd) and I did but I get the same error report "Input/Output error reading dev/hdb" when I was to format the hard disk.  I've checked my hard drive with different programs and I can't find any problem with it. ChousukeI suppose.14:45
gladieri still dont know the difference between a symbolic and a hard link - but its similar to the windows shortcut... mount is used to make a volume accessable14:45
Chousukegladier: a hard link is an alternative name for a file.14:45
Chousukegladier: a symbolic link is just a "this file is actually here" pointer14:46

=== guest is now known as Eco1

_Angelus_is there a way on kubuntu to get things updated? not only for security issues , but when new versions of programs are available.17:26
ForgeAusyeah well beryl got reabsorbed into compiz in compiz-fusion17:27
ForgeAus(before that it was a fork of compiz anyhow)17:27
DioxinForgeAus I think beryl had some slightly different features17:27
ForgeAusAdept should do that for you Angelus, theres an update notification icon for the system tray that runs on startup17:27
ArwenDioxin, beryl was compiz with more plugins17:28
Dioxinit has this cool feature where when you get the cube and rotate that the windows on your desktop were stacked in 3d17:28
ForgeAusyes the desktop cube was part of beryl17:28
ForgeAusI assume it too has been absorbed back into compiz17:28
Dioxincube is in compiz but not the stacking part17:28
ForgeAusstacking?17:29
Dioxinok imagine looking at thecube17:29
ForgeAusis it compatible with KDE's tray yet?17:29
Dioxinnow imagine that on the right hand face you cant see are 3 windows17:29
Dioxinthis stacking thing made it so you'd see 3 extra panes of glass coming out of the cube on the right side17:30
Dioxinwhere each bit of glass was a window17:30
ForgeAushehe oddly I always had my virtual screens set to 6 just enough for each face of a cube, how convenient is that? :)17:30
Dioxinthought it was 4 to make it work17:30
Dioxincos you cant use the top and bottom17:31
ForgeAuspossibly...17:31
Dioxinunless they updated it since I last looked17:31

ubotuThe X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: http://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixVideoResolutionHowto23:06
phoenixzsub[t]rnl, okay, but that was not the point.. :) What if it would have been my mom?  I can not even imagine here checking the xorg.conf23:06
phoenixzxerxes1358, metacity.. I think thats gnome, is it not?23:06
xerxes1358Yes it is23:06
xerxes1358my title bars look huge23:07
phoenixzxerxes1358, youre using KDE now.. you don't need metacity..23:07
xerxes1358maybe it is not relevant since I will install KDE 4 anyways23:07
xerxes1358I am using gnome23:07
xerxes1358phoenixz: the live cd uses gnome23:07
phoenixzxerxes1358, I would wait with the KDE4 thing for a minute... or a month :23:07
phoenixzxerxes1358, ah, okay.. well, first thing to decide is.. you want gnome or kde23:07
xerxes1358kde 523:08
xerxes1358:D23:08
xerxes1358kde 423:08
phoenixzxerxes1358, I'd recommend KDE if you're a bit an advanced user.. if youre a noob, maybe gnome is better23:08
xerxes1358lets go gnome23:08
xerxes1358no no23:08
xerxes1358KDE is fine23:08
xerxes1358argg23:08

phoenixzxerxes1358, and KDE4 is released but far from stable.. its nice to play with but don't use it as your production system just yet23:08

phoenixzxerxes1358, sure, why not? you got linux, you got choice if you want.. :P23:11

Odd-rationaleIf that doesn't work, then you might have uninstalled something.23:18
impietyumm23:18
impietypowerpleb: you have to install gnome, not just ubuntu-desktop23:18
jelAyabara: OK, first of all, make sure your keyboard's normal keys are all doing what they should -- apostophe keys and hash keys and money symbols all type the right thing, etc.  make sure kmilo is installed.  Go to the system settings, and you'll find options for configuring the keys.  You should be able to just choose functions, and press the keys you want them to be attached to.  It's been a while since I looked at kmilo, so I can't remember exactly.23:19

I think I'll do that instead.... what do you think?23:20
