MaskedOnekdeinit tree keeps randomly opening kfmclient processes on opening url for fullcirclemagazine03:50
g2g591MaskedOne:  its the user% column for cpu usage, and you can kill proces using ksysgaurd03:51

firecrotchNeither do I, but I feel good in the fact that I know that if I wanted to, or needed to, I could05:36

ForgeAusor you simply are keeping your options open?05:37
firecrotchKeeping my options open05:38
klobsterForgeAus: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html for more information05:38
val0ForgeAus: open source allows for transperency of programming and if everybody can see the source code and modify it at will they can improve the product and make sure that it doesn't not contain unwanted code05:38
ForgeAuswell I'm an equal opportunity software enthusiast :)05:38
firecrotchLet's say I need a feature added to a web browser that no one else could ever possibly need.  Opera, I can't do that.  Firefox, I can05:38

firecrotchIn fact, I've been considering tweaking firefox to be able to have some of the functionality of Konqueror - namely filesystem manipulation and stuff like that05:39
firecrotchOf course, that's currently not within my realm of knowledge, but it soon could be.05:40
ForgeAusfirecrotch with opera I don't see why you can't get the opera people to do it for you if you ask05:40
val0firecrotch: that would actually be really handy.., i always wanted that05:40

firecrotchHahaha05:43
computerhello what's the iso burning program that comes with kubuntu everyeon05:44
computereveryone*****05:44
firecrotchAlso, val0 - I wonder how many other people would be interested in that.05:44
firecrotchcomputer: k3b'05:44
computerthanks alot =)05:44
firecrotchwithout the apostrophe, of course05:44
computerya :)05:44
val0firecrotch: i don't know, but i find it pretty annoying to have to use two or three apps when a hybrid like that could solve the issue05:46
RobotGuyI actually prefer to use separate apps for each task.05:47
firecrotchval0:  I was just thinking of a way it could be possible, as well.  I assume you've heard of IEtab, right?05:47
val0firecrotch: yes and i've used it myself, was really helpfull a few times, especially browsing m$ pages05:48
Jasmin_i installed compiz but stil i dont know what key i hav to use for see effect05:49
firecrotchval0:  Well, I figure that the code that calls the internet explorer interface could just be replaced with code to call konq instead05:50
firecrotchif I had the time to sit down, look at the source code (and learn the language) I could probably do it05:50
Jasmin_i tried some lik ctrl+alt+left key05:51
computerhmm i'm trying to create a super grub disk from kubuntu, in k3b, is this a data project trying to burn a 500kb iso image on to a cd? thanks05:51
val0firecrotch: maybe i am wrong but i think that it's little more involved than that. I think that the IEtabs is just an emulation of how Firefox interprets the code as opposed to whole deal with file handling... but i might be totally wrong05:52
computeror should i be clicking the button that says 'burn dvd iso image', but i'm trying to put stuff on cd...05:52
triple-hcioa05:54
firecrotchval0:  I'm assuming that it basically calls the IE rendering engine, and translates the firefox button controls to commands that the IE engine would understand05:54
firecrotchit basically embeds IE within FF, so to speak05:55
val0firecrotch: yeh something like that05:56
val0firecrotch: so to handle files it will need something more than that05:56
firecrotchval0:  As long as it passes the URI entered in the address bar directly to konqueror, it should work fine in handling files05:57
val0firecrotch: that's where you loose me... not enough knowledge on this end to be able to say anything either way... I just WANT stuff :D05:58
Jasmin_firecrotch: hi can u tel me about compiz i installed compiz but i dont know how do i can use05:58
val0Jasmin_: what are you trying to do with it?05:58
val0Jasmin_: did you configure it?05:58
mefisto__IE view lite is an extension that opens IE from a page displayed in firefox, and can easily be changed to open konqueror05:59
=== william is now known as N3RXS
Jasmin_val0: how to do05:59
firecrotchmefisto__:  we're looking to actually embed Konq inside of a firefox tab though, similar to IEtab06:00
ForgeAusso a Konqtab :)06:00
mefisto__firecrotch: that seems much more complicated06:00
val0Jasmin_: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/ConfiguringCompiz06:01
firecrotchmefisto__:  Yeah, it seems complicated, but it would be so useful!06:01
firecrotchNow that I think about it... isn't there a KPart for Konqueror?06:02
mefisto__firecrotch: but you would have konqueror in firefox, without the konqueror interface. Considering konqueror starts up so fast, it seems better to have a new konqueror window06:03
val0firecrotch: what i really need is some kind of a contraption that would change "focus" based on the application that i am physically looking at... just got this 28 inch monitor and it's a pain in the ass to use!!! maybe i should email Stephen Hawkings, I hear he has something like that06:07
firecrotchval0:  I bet that could actually be done pretty easily06:08
firecrotchval0:  Obviously it would require the use of a video camera of some kind06:09
val0firecrotch: glasses or some special contact lenses and off you go!06:09
val0firecrotch: I was thinking more like IR06:09
val0firecrotch: check this out: http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?wo=2006039346&IA=WO2006039346&DISPLAY=DESC06:10
mefisto__you want it to change focus just by looking?06:10
computeri just tried to rename an ".avi" file to an ".iso" file, but the icon still says that it's an ".avi" file, anyway i can make it change to ".iso"?06:10
surgymaybe a fealer gauge to go on your right eyelid so you can keep your right eye closed and actually look with your left eye, it whould feal for the high point where your puple is06:10
firecrotchval0:  Hmm, that would be a possible way to do it, but it would require you to physically move your head, which you probably don't do06:10
surgycomputer: use acetone iso06:10
val0computer: are you trying to burn a movie?06:10
val0mefisto__: yeh something htat i can scroll through apps with, without using mouse/keys06:11
mefisto__computer: mkisofs is the command you want06:11
computerno i'm trying to test out crystal xp on my old pc06:11
computero06:11
computeris there some way to do this in windows06:12
computerthe file i downloaded is on my desktop06:12
val0computer: sorry never heard of it06:13
mefisto__"mkisofs -o cd.iso movie.avi" I think is the way to do it06:13
computerso basically i downloaded 8 rar files that extracted to an ".avi" file, the instruction that came with the download says to rename t he ".avi" file to ".iso" file, but i did that, and it's not changing06:13
computeric06:13
computerhmm maybe i'll redownload it on kubuntu, would u happen to know someway to do it in windows?06:13
val0computer: to just rename the file?06:14
mefisto__computer: can you play the avi? or is it actually an iso image with an .avi extension?06:14
val0computer: where did you read those installation instructions??06:14
computerit's supposed to be an iso file i think06:14
computerval0 o and the instructions were included in the rar file, it came out once i extracted the rar files06:14
mefisto__renaming it will not change the content of the file from avi to iso06:15
computerval0 i'm thinking when the instruction said to rename it, it meant to change the avi file into an iso file06:15
computermefisto__ yeah, that's where i'm stuck kinda06:15
computercuz after the rename the icon of the file still displays three fat letters a, v, i across lol06:16
computeranyone tried acetone iso b4 like surgy suggested06:16
computeractually i'll try google a bit more too thanks everyone06:16
surgyi have its amazing06:16
computerdoes it change avi files into iso files? or is it  mostly for burning06:17
mefisto__try "mkisofs -o cd.iso movie.avi"06:17
computercool,  yeah i saw u mentioned it b4, but the file i downloaded is actually on my desktop, and the desktop is windows xp hehe06:19
surgycomputer: its mostly for compressing and decompressing files to or from iso formats06:19
computersurgy ic06:19
computero and i just googled a little bit more, i think magicISO on windows can do this, and i have that program installed, so i'll try that way first06:20
computerhopefully this'll take away all the problems =)06:20
mefisto__computer: do you have kubuntu? why not just make the iso in kubuntu?06:20
val0computer: well to convert an AVI file to ISO file you can use DeVeDe and then use K3b to burn it :D06:20
val0!devede06:20
ubotuSorry, I don't know anything about devede - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi06:20
computermefisto__ yeah i'm typing on my kubuntu laptop, but the file is actually on a windwos desktop06:21
val0LOL06:21
val0nice06:21
mefisto__you can also use k3b to make an iso, in the burn dialog tick "only create image"06:21
mefisto__computer: so you don't have access to the file?06:22
computerno not on the laptop,  yeah i just realized how badly i framed the question, srries06:22
computeri think i just got the mess straightened out on the desktop for now tho06:23
computerit seems like magicISO in windows does similar tasks06:23
mefisto__computer: or use a kubuntu livecd in the windows machine06:24
computero yeah that'd work, that makes sense too,  yeah i should of thought of that earlier06:25
computeryeah i was going thru all this to get an xp disk just in case i screw up mbr trying to remove ubuntu off desktop06:26
g2g591is there a kde based dock app like awn?06:28
mefisto__computer: if you have a win98 startup floppy, "fdisk /mbr" will fix it too06:29
computermefisto__ yeah ordered my desktop with no floppy drive har har, so sad.....06:29
=== kosy is now known as kosy__

firecrotchcomputer:  Weren't able to the last time I checked, which was last week06:31
g2g591firecrotch: omg, we have an up to date package of it06:32

Jasmin_firecrotch: i dont know but now what i hav to do06:36
val0Jasmin_: let me think :)06:37
firecrotchg2g591:  That's good.  Are you using compiz at all?  I think the problems I had were related to compiz and kooldock not working well together06:38
g2g591firecrotch: actually i am06:38
g2g591firecrotch: im not sure if  it matters, but im running hardy06:38
firecrotchg2g591:  that could be the difference... I had problems in Edgy, Feisty, and Gutsy06:39
computercurious/(related i guess): do kiba-dock only work when beryl is open? cuz whenever i set beryl to use kwin, on bootup i'd get kibadock in center, and black everywhere else, only when i close kiba-dock do everything go normal again, then i can start beryl, then kiba-dock, and everything's good06:39
firecrotchHaven't made the leap to hardy yet - had trouble installing it fresh06:39
firecrotchJasmin_:  Well, first we need to find out what kind of video card you have.  Can you paste the output of lspci to a pastebin?06:40
firecrotch!pastebin | Jasmin_06:40
ubotuJasmin_: pastebin is a service to post large texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (be sure to give the URL of your paste - see also the #kubuntu channel topic)06:40
val0firecrotch: is there an issue with ATI v/c's and compiz?06:40
firecrotchval0: The restricted driver has to be used, the default one doesn't have support for Xgl06:42

MilhousePunkRockLately I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy, and Amarok did not change the color scheme accordingly (although it did update to 1.4.8)06:55
MilhousePunkRockIs this a common problem? Google did not know it, and there is nothing on the amarok forums about it either06:55

jhend60because i just installed it and my logon font is huge! i have to force dpi 96 for it to work06:56
Zero_PointHello, I appear to be having one hell of a problem.06:57
Zero_PointI was forced to restart Kubuntu because it became unresponsive, and upon restarting, my IDE HDDs wouldn't show up in post.06:58
Zero_PointThey show up now, but now all I get is "Error Loading OS".06:58
MilhousePunkRockZero_Point: Did you do anything crazy before the unresponsiveness?06:59
firecrotchZero_Point:  Sounds like a hardware issue.  Is this 1 drive or multiple?06:59
Zero_PointI have 3 drives, 2 IDE and one SATA.06:59
Zero_PointMilhouse: I was trying to get Steam to work in Wine if that counts as crazy.06:59
firecrotchZero_Point: IDE drives on the same cable?06:59
Zero_PointYes.06:59
MilhousePunkRockZero_Point: Don't think that would damage hardware...07:00
Zero_PointThat's what I thought.07:00
Zero_PointBefore it gave me the "Error Loading OS" message GRUB managed to give me an "Error 2" message.07:00
MilhousePunkRockZero_Point: POST is before Kubuntu, if it's wrong there, it's most likely the hardware07:00
Zero_PointThat's what I'm afraid of.07:00
Zero_PointBut like I said, it sees the drives just fine now.07:01
jhend60also, whhen i but kubuntu just before the usplash screen comes it says an error about resource and bridge07:01
MilhousePunkRockZero_Point: Grub errors are meaningful, you just have to look up what it means07:01
jhend60does that mean anything07:01
firecrotchGRUB error 2 is "Selected disk doesn't exist07:01
jhend60the line appears 9 times (resource error or something)07:01
firecrotchso the BIOS was not seeing the drive at all07:01
jhend60and then it boots fine- does this make anything not work?07:01
Zero_Pointfirecrotch: It sees the drives just fine as far as I can tell.07:02
jhend60#AvatarNewReleases07:03
firecrotchZero_Point:  That's right now though.  I'm thinking faulty IDE cable07:03
Zero_PointGod-dammit. Now it doesn't boot at all.07:03
Zero_PointEven pressing down the power button won't shut it off, either.07:03
LamerMani've made a secure tcp connection over ssh, how should i close it? Is closing the ssh process that keeps that connection correct? is there some more graceful way? When i just perform kill ssh_process_id, all the ssh clients close and i need just to close one tcp over ssh coonection07:04
firecrotchHow far into the POST does it get before failing?07:04
Zero_PointYou mean now? Nowhere.07:04
Zero_PointPower-on, black screen. No beeps, no display.07:04

MilhousePunkRockZero_Point: Can you get in the BIOS? Maybe there is a PC health section which might tell you what is wrong already07:11
Zero_PointIt was even a fresh install from this morning.07:11
MilhousePunkRockI would check for loose or obviously broken cables in the first place07:11
jhend60so can any1 help ME?07:11
firecrotchZero_Point:  Considering the erratic behavior of this issue, I'm thinking either IDE cable or the IDE controller itself07:12
firecrotchTry unplugging the IDE cable and then booting (even if the SATA drive isn't bootable)07:12
Zero_PointGod, I hope not. I can't afford another repair on this thing. Already had to replace the PSU not too long ago.07:13

Zero_PointI have tons of spares.07:21

Zero_PointNope.07:22

firecrotchAh07:22
MilhousePunkRockmefisto__: I could try walking into the store today and ask them to give me a free IDE cable, I bet they won't...07:22
mefisto__MilhousePunkRock: how much would they charge? I always get stuff like that for free. Unless it's a large dept store or something07:24
firecrotchI guess something like that would depend on how large of a store it is and how often you shop there.  A smaller store that you *always* go to would be more likely to help you out in that department07:24
MilhousePunkRockmefisto__: Probably in combination with a new HDD at the friendly PC store at the corner (which we don't have here anyway)...07:25
mefisto__all videos played in xine players are displaying incorrect aspect ratio. If I "disable all video scaling" in kaffeine, the aspect ratio is correct (but too small, of course). Does anyone know what's going on?07:26

Zero_PointBut first, a test...07:26
Ahmucki have a zip drive, and it's properly mounted however no icon is showing up on the desktop, neither is it showing up in "storage media".  any idea why?07:27
Zero_PointAnd now the SATA drive is back in, and it's loading up fine.07:27
Zero_PointMan, Linux is such a headache. :V07:27
Zero_PointBut for now, I must acquire some tape.07:28
Zero_PointThank you for your help, gentlemen.07:28
MilhousePunkRockZero_Point: Linux did not remove the isolation from the IDE cable, that's for sure ;)07:29
Zero_PointWell, when you run Linux all day, only to have it lock-up, and you've butted-heads with it in the past, you make assumptions. :V07:30
Zero_PointAnd I wouldn't put it past it...07:30
val0what's the command to start your kde? I restarted in the console mode and can't can back in :D07:31

Everything went fine except that it I think recompiled my kernel and tried to make some changes to the xorg.conf but I didn't let it make them. Now when I boot it bumps me into console mode and I can't get out :D07:39
MilhousePunkRockval0: What's wrong with the NVidia driver from the repo?07:40
MilhousePunkRockval0: Try sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to begin with07:43
val0MilhousePunkRock: 1. couldn't get it to work with the nvidia config console 2. the repo driver doesn't detect mine monitor propperly, nvidia driver does. llutzmemoswe: boot with option "init=/bin/sh" and reset your password in /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow13:53

memosweright now i am on mirc in xp13:54
thekleinememoswe: ok13:54
memoswei restart the oc on kubuntu, and then what?13:54
thekleinememoswe: when rebooting, you're asked right in the beginning if you'd like to see the boot menu13:55
thekleinememoswe: say yes, and select not the first entry (Ubuntu something), but the second named something like recovery13:55
memosweok ill try that13:56

memoswethen i supousse i can create a new account13:56

thekleinememoswe: nope13:56
thekleinememoswe: just issue 'passwd USERNAME' where you replace USERNAME13:56

PowerJCduron 1600 256mb ram13:58
nosrednaekimPowerJC: i'd let it go a bit longer13:58
thekleinememoswe: you need to enter 'passwd USERNAME'13:58
thekleine memoswe: where you should replace USERNAME with the username of your account13:58
PowerJCok... i'm just worried about it, the cd drive isn't the best in the world13:58
memosweand if i dont remeber the name of my account?13:59
memoswedo i get the possibility to create a ne w one?13:59
thekleinememoswe: that's not so simple13:59
thekleinememoswe: but you may use 'cat /etc/passwd'13:59
thekleinememoswe: this will just list all the accounts on your ubuntu14:00
thekleinememoswe: and you probably can identify the account name then;-)14:00
