lordraydengooop, did U bring flowers at th funeral?01:33
goop2that's the one thing I didn't do01:33
Dr_willisHeres an inter4esting little quirk i just saw. using samba, on ubuntu as a fileserver. I got a 'publicfiles' share, and theres also a 'publicfiles.exe' and 'publicfiles.cmd' and 'publicfiles.pif' and 'publifciles.lnk'01:34
user_i understand changing permissions, but when new files are added to the folder (my music folder to be exact), i have to manually change the permissions for each individual file... is there a way to automate this?01:34
Dr_willisTheres the umask option I belive that can dot hat. but thats not a 'per directory' sort of thing01:35
Dr_willisMake a little script that does the command needed to set the permissions, and run it every so often i guess. :P01:35
lordraydenk, goop, c u later, I'll try kubuntu and bring some flowers later, btw, where did U burry it?01:35
user_dr_willis: that's what i thought someone was going to say :/01:36
goop2lordrayden: in my CD collection01:36
Dr_willisof course there may be other ways to do what ever it is you are tyring to acomplish. :) depending on the details01:36
user_dr_willis: would a simple bash do the trick?  that's all i really can do (and poorly at that)01:36
Dr_willisa bash chmod command would be what i would use.01:36
Dr_williswhy do you need the files writeable by all users?01:37
lordraydenlol goop, is it left or right? just so I dont make any mistakes :((01:37
user_dr_willis: all i want is when files are added to my music folder, that they are writable, so that when running Amarok or other media players, the ID3 tags can be edited without running the media player as root01:37
Dr_willisuser_,  Hmm.. if you run the player as the person owning the files. they should be writeable..01:38
Dr_willissounds to me like there may be deeper details to whats going on.01:38
goop2lordrayden: I keep my CDs on a coulum, but it's marked Gentoo, so it should be easy to find01:38
user_dr_willis: right... that's what I thought, but it will only let me edit song files if i run the media player as root!01:38
Dr_willisuser_,  Where exactly are these files at?01:38
user_dr_willis: home directory/Music01:38
Dr_willisand how are new files getting there?01:39

user_dr_willis: we'll say iTunes ;)01:39
lordraydenbye 4 now01:39
goop2ttyl01:39
Dr_willisif the user is copying files to his own home/Music - then  he should be the owner.01:39
Dr_willisby running stuff as root. anythign root saves will be owned by root.01:40
user_dr_willis: i know... that's what I can't figure out01:40

grim76Bialar: You tried this disc on other systems and had problems with it?05:04

Goop2the first thing the disk should read when you turn on your computer is the /boot partition05:04
Bialar4 times downloadet05:05
Bialar3 times downloadet normalinstall and once alternate05:05
Goop2if that isn't right on the inside it won't boot05:05

Bialarim used to a very intrusive grub ... i remember whileit installed itself on a usb drive ... lol05:11
Bialarbut why create a 100mb partition ?05:12
Goop2because if you don't have the boot files right on the inside of the disk it will get lost and give troubles booting05:13

grim76I don't think it is actually doing the partitioning.05:18
Bialarit says it writes data for a while but then it just shuts the systemdown05:18
Bialarand nothing05:18
Bialarno the partitioning is done05:18
Goop2stupid question05:18
Goop2like just plain retarded question05:18
Bialari can see that since the partitons are visible in dapperdrake and in windowswith partition magic05:19
Goop2I guess that would make the drive writeable.. nevermind05:19
Bialarthe i i say it should create a fat 32 partition its created and usuable after that05:19
Bialarbut the setup from kubuntu never writes anything anywhere05:20

G1Hi everybody! I'm having problems with kdm. Can anybody help?05:58
redbeard1dw I"m a n00b you shouldn't listen to me anyway05:59
G1Be prepared, I kind of did something really stupid.05:59
redbeard1what'd you do G!?05:59
redbeard1G1*05:59
G1That's weird, I typed in GT. O.o;05:59
redbeard1ok so what'd you do d00d?06:00
G1Well, you see, I started with an install of Ubuntu with GNOME, and I installed the kubuntu-desktop package just to try Kubuntu out. This went fine, but I decided I didn't like it as much as GNOME, so I wanted to uninstall it!06:01
redbeard1k06:01
G1The problem was, I had set kdm as my default display manager when I installed kubuntu-desktop and everything that came along with it.06:01
redbeard1and you forgot to switch it to GDM b4 you uninstalled it?06:02
G1So I figured, I'll just go into Boot-Up Manager, disable it, and re-enable gdm.06:02
dthacker-laptopok, I mounted the HD and it's officially toast06:02
Daisuke_IdoG1: sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm06:02
redbeard1that sux dthacker didja grab me a beer?06:02
G1OHHH, that's how that command was supposed to go!06:02
Daisuke_Ido:)06:03
Daisuke_Idohang around here and you'll pick up a ton of info :)06:03
G1I thought it went like, 'sudo dpkg --recofigure gdm.'06:03
G1And I didn't see anything about it in dpkg's --help thing, so I didn't know whatto think. ^.^;06:03
redbeard1I"m figgering that out Daisuke lol06:03
Daisuke_Idonope, dpkg-reconfigure is a separate command altogether06:04
* redbeard1 just sits back and absorbs the flowing info06:04
Goop2dthacker-laptop: sweet. you get to make death frizbees too!06:04
redbeard1?me laughs06:04
* redbeard1 laughs06:04
redbeard1dangit06:04
G1... Okay, I figure out how to solve a problem, and my hearing disappears in my left ear. O.o06:05
tomahasamootDaisuke_Ido: "Could not start kdestartconfig4.  Check your installtion."06:05
G1Interesting!06:05
redbeard1G1: how'd that happen?06:05
G1Does this happen every time you figure something out? :P06:05
* redbeard1 laughs06:05
G1Just an ear pop thing, with funny timing. :P06:06
redbeard1wow that is intereesting06:06
Goop2not every time06:06

Goop2I'll come up with another idea and my hearing comes back06:06

* redbeard1 laughs @ Goop206:06
G1Hmm, that doesn't seem right.06:07
* grim76 lines the mule up with Goop2 this will only hurt for about 2 weeks.06:07
Daisuke_Idotomahasamoot: i'm not entirely sure, but #kubuntu-kde4 might know more about it than i do.  i just hang out here, i pretty much don't even use kde anymore :\06:07
Goop2uh-oh06:07
G1I'm logged in as root, having chosen the recovery mode thing at the GRUB screen,, typed in that command and reenabled gdm...06:07
grim76Might get ya set straight though for a bit.06:07
tomahasamootDaisuke_Ido: what do you use?06:08
G1And it says "invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm, action "reload" failed."06:08
G1Is that normal? o.o06:08
redbeard1wow06:08
redbeard1that looks like it's kinda fun lol06:08

G1I keep getting this green, dotty line with like, red and blue spots at the top of my screen.06:10
G1Oh! There's gdm.06:10
tomahasamootDaisuke_Ido: what do you like about gnome,  xfce, fluxbox?06:10
* redbeard1 laughs at G106:10
G1Still, green, dotty line. Anybody know what the heck that is?06:11
redbeard1that sounds like it might be a vid card issue06:11
G1And that sounds like me.06:11
* G1 rolls eyes.06:11
* redbeard1 laughs06:11
dthacker-laptopand now the freaking dog wants out.06:12
Daisuke_Idoxfce and fluxbox are (for me) bare-essential desktop environment/window managers, lets me get things done06:12
Goop2isn't this exactly what I was saying like 2 minutes ago?06:12
dthacker-laptopWell I only lost a few family pictures06:12
Daisuke_Idognome is just because i got tired of configuring kde06:12
G1It seems like whatever I do, I always end up with hardware that's almost, but not quite, fully supported.06:12
redbeard1yeah aint that a pisser?06:12
G1That's... One way to put it, redbeard. o.o06:13
redbeard1:D06:13

G1Coincidentally, that's also why I didn't like Kubuntu, Daisuke!06:14

Microsoft software in ##windows (Please note Freenode Policy) - Thanks.06:26

ubotuGidean: Hi! Welcome to #kubuntu!07:46
* se7en Gets dthacker-laptop hi | Gidean07:46
Gideanthis could be a stupid question but...all things being equal, what would be faster a box with a single 1.8GHz or one with dual 1.0GHz?07:46
Gideanby equal I mean same amout of ram and same bus speed...07:47
dthacker-laptopGidean: 1.8 is faster. 2 1.0's are wider.   (more processing at same time)07:48
dthacker-laptopso it depends on your load07:48
console_jockeydthacker-laptop: working for you?07:48
dthacker-laptopjust booted, please stand by.....07:49
Gideanhmm wider...I confess I don't really understand what wider means in this context...07:49
dthacker-laptop1.8 is a racetrack with 2 lanes and great banking on the curves.   2x1.0 is a 6 lane racetrack , but the curves aren't banked as much.07:51
GideanTrying to grok the whole dual cpu thing...I mean, when would one be more advantageous...07:51
Gidean:)07:51
GideanI like that...07:51
dthacker-laptopconsole_jockey: mine works, but I have a fresh install07:51
Gideanso dual would be better for, say video rendering...07:52
dthacker-laptopI've never done that, so I can't say....07:53
dthacker-laptopafk 5 mins....07:53
console_jockeydthacker-laptop: mine was a fresh install as well.  Not sure why the file created a prob;07:53
console_jockeyok, I'm out07:53
Gideanrather, wider would be better for video rendering, faster better for everyday stuff (i.e. burning disks etc)?07:53
GideanThanks for the info Mr. dthacker-laptop :D07:54
LynoureGidean: burning disks is not very processor intensive anyway... throwing better processor at it does not do nearly anything07:55
GideanI see, Lynoure.  Could you, maybe give me an example where two are better than one?07:55
LynoureGidean: I have no idea how video rendering works, so cannot say much about that. But if you are for e.g. calculating the values of pi, or some other single-threaded massive task, adding another processor core does not do much as your task is not spittable to multiple processors anyway07:57
dthacker-laptopadept, you steaming pile of junk!  Quit crashing!07:58
LynoureGidean: if you do loads of different things, or run tasks that are optimized for multiple processors, sure, having multiple processors is much better.08:00
GideanThanks Lynoure.  Basiclly, I have some extra $ and want to upgrade an old tower.  I can choose between a single cpu or dual cpu's.  I want that most bag for my buck...08:01
LynoureGidean: good example of something easily splittable is apache, as it launches multiple processes as needed. But if you e.g want to listen to an ogg and encode an ogg at the same time, sure, already much goodness from having multiple processing cores08:01

Bizzehtheres a plugin for firefox that allows you to inject javascript into pages11:45
Bizzehinject some javascript that adds to the css...11:45
Bizzehcant remember what its called though11:46
Lynoureto me javascript usually means a non-good way, but tastes vary. I did not know of that one, maybe it will help Arelis here.11:46
BizzehLynoure: it is A way, that will work11:47
Bizzehits dirty, and horrible, and messy... i admit... but thats what all the sites will look like once Arelis makes them all dark and out of contrast/theme11:48

LynoureBizzeh: I was just about to say that it's an exotic problem. :)11:49
ArelisWith broken sites I mean images not showing up.11:51
Bizzehsome images are set with css11:51
Bizzehand your removing the css11:51
Arelisi know of an extension in firefox called web developer toolbar and that has an css style injector that you can use to modify pages on the fly. and you add to css with it.11:51
Bizzehbut its only while your there on the page11:52

Goop2are you having troubles with it?21:42
jhutchins_ltRight.  The SuSE developers were pretty stalled on it, so a group of public developers forked Beryl, and made good progress.  When they saw what was happening, the compiz developers "came around" to the beryl people's viewpoint, and they merged the code back into the suse supported project.  Since all anybody was after was a good 3d desktop, the beryl people went back to compiz.  Which was about six months ago, where have you been?21:43

draikIs there a way to collect all of the images through your computer and organize them?23:40
draiks/through/throughout23:42
jeldraik: yes, lots.23:44
jeldigikam, for one23:44
jeldraik: although I hope you mean all of the images in your documents folder, or something like that.  It wouldn't be a good idea to just start "organising" images that programs use, etc ;)23:45
draikjel: Right. I have many of my own images spread around and I want them all in one folder for me to access *easily*23:46
jeldraik: OK, check out digikam.  Should sort things out for you :)  There's also google's picasa, if you prefer.  I find it annoying interfering, though, rather than helpful.23:47
mlankhorstWell, picasa is easy for me to put an album online.23:47
