john_sstgraber: yeah, me neither. I don't know much about it except that it was supposed to be able to be a PDC/Fully participating catalog server in  a domain00:00
john_swell, anyway I appreciate the chat. You wouldn't know how to get to a tty from a thin client would you?00:01
john_sWhen I do alt+ctrl+f2 (or f3,f4 etc) the screen locks up on me)00:01
stgraberyou may try to boot it in console mode, then starting X by hand00:02
stgraberSCREEN_07=shell (not sure for the 07, could be 06)00:04
stgraberanyway, it's past 1am here and I have to wake up early tomorrow :)00:05
john_sAhh, I need to edit ldm.conf its coming back to me.00:05
john_sstgraber: ok, thanks!00:05
john_sbye00:05
y_Aside from the whole thin-client thing, what is the difference between EDU and Ubuntu?00:06
LaserJockwell, different artwork and theming of course00:09
LaserJockand a good selection of educational applications00:09
LaserJockgenerally Edubuntu is just more geared around education00:10
LaserJockincluding the community00:10
LaserJockbut of course we share a lot with Ubuntu being a part of the same project00:11
LaserJocky_: does that answer your question enough?00:14
y_Yes, I think so.00:15
y_Is there a built-in system for sharing users or do I need LDAP?00:15
y_(sharing users in a lab, that is)00:15
y_JaserJock ^00:16
y_err00:16
y_LaserJock ^00:16
LaserJockwell, for thin clients it's not much of an issue for in lab since they're all on the same server00:17
LaserJockbut LDAP is used quite a bit00:17
y_LaserJock -- I don't want thin clients because the lab isn't really archaic hardware.00:18
y_LaserJock -- They've got big enough disks and computing power, plus the strain on the network would make an already bad situation worse.00:18
y_But I had problems LDAP (importing the existing groups, specifically)00:19
y_I am also wondering if an upgrade to 7.10 is in order before all of this, or if there is some configuration option for labs that doesn't include thin-clients00:20
LaserJockno, currently basically nothing is done for non-thinclient machines00:21
y_I read this on the website, LaserJock00:21
LaserJockthey are assumed to be basically just home machines with educational applications, however they are no worse than an Ubuntu machine00:21
y_"New pre-configured installation options have been added to the Ubuntu Server CD. Mail Server, File Server, Print Server, and Database Server options join existing LAMP and DNS options for pre-configured installations, easing the deployment of common server configurations."00:22
y_(about 7.10)00:22
y_wow, totally read LAMP as LDAP. Nevermind00:22
y_I'm just reading what I want to read now. heh.00:22
y_LaserJock, fair enough. If I upgrade the server do I have to upgrade the clients, too?00:22
LaserJockwell, everything is on the clients00:23
LaserJockserver rather00:23
y_What do you mean?00:23
LaserJockso you upgrade the server, then upgrade the client chroot on the server, but that's it00:23
y_hmm00:24
LaserJocky_: nothing is installed on the thin client to upgrade00:24
y_I meant non thin clients00:24
LaserJockoh00:24
LaserJockwell, what are the clients for?00:24
y_Can 7.04's talk to 7.10's I guess is what I'm asking00:24
LaserJocksure00:24
y_Its just a computer lab for elementary school students, teachers need to login too and share files and stuff00:24
LaserJockit might depend a tad on what you're trying to "talk"00:24
y_(i've got a net loaded /home directory)00:24
y_basically I want to have a net installed home directory (or some other mechansm...) and then I want to share users with the clients to the server00:25
LaserJockhmm, I can't say with any certainty00:27
LaserJockyou could sure ask the edubuntu-users mailing list00:28
y_hmm00:29
y_https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/edubuntu-network-auth-server00:29
y_know anything about that?00:29
y_LaserJock ^ maybe you can interpret that00:29
y_That seems to imply Feisty is necessary (7.10?)00:30
LaserJockI don't believe that's been finished yet00:31
LaserJockgood LDAP support has been a long-time goal but a tricky bugger to make user friendly00:31
y_LaserJock --> http://www.vcsvikings.org/docuwiki/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/CreatingLDAPClients00:34
y_Am I naive to believe pure ol' linux works fine for Edubuntu?00:35
LaserJockmost likely it should00:37
LaserJockwe'd like to get it so users and groups are easily editable/importable from a GUI00:38
LaserJockI've never done LDAP so I'm not a good person to ask00:39
LaserJockbut several guys on the edubuntu-users lists have been doing it for a long time00:39
y_cool00:41
moquistLaserJock: hey!03:03
LaserJockhi moquist03:04
moquistLaserJock: I've had my head buried in a "startup" virtual school, and I'm hoping to emerge now to do something useful for hardy.03:05

IsleVeganwhy would the dhcp3-server start and restart and other commands always fail on a freshly installed edubuntu 7.10 with all the updates ?03:24
IsleVeganit's a server install03:25
lnsIsleVegan, are you sure your dhcp.conf file is sane?03:33
IsleVeganhmm, i'll look, i haven't edited it at all. it's the default file from the install03:35
IsleVeganltsp is new for me03:35
lnsIsleVegan, if you set it up initially wrong it won't load03:36
IsleVeganis that in /etc/samba ?03:36
lnslook in /var/log for clues03:36
IsleVegani see a dhcp.conf in /etc/samba03:36
lnstry /etc/ltsp03:37
IsleVegani see it03:38
IsleVeganis there a paste bin here?03:38
lns!pastebin03:39
ubotupastebin is a service to post large texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the #ubuntu channel topic)03:39
IsleVeganthanks03:39
IsleVeganhttp://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/53932/03:40
IsleVeganthat's the file03:41
IsleVeganltsp.conf03:41
IsleVeganthis server has 2 ethernet ports03:42
lnslooks sane03:45
lnsi know in the past i've had to manually edit /etc/default/dhcp3-server (or something similar) and put in which eth adapter dhcp is listening on03:46
lnscheck that out03:46
IsleVeganthanks03:48
IsleVeganhttp://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/53934/03:48
IsleVeganthat doesn't look right03:48
lnsyeah03:49
lnsput in which eth card is being used for the ltsp network03:49
lnsthen /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart03:49
IsleVegangreat, i'll do that now03:49
IsleVegandhcpd self-test failed. Please fix the config file.03:54
IsleVegani put in eth003:54
IsleVeganboth with quotes and then without quotes03:55
IsleVegantried both ways03:55
lnsit needs quotes03:55
lnsis eth0 up?03:55
IsleVeganhmm, looking03:56
IsleVeganit has a check mark in network control panel03:57
lnsdoes it have an ip?03:59
lnsif so, what is it?04:00
lns(it needs to be the same as the dhcp range)04:00
IsleVegani was trying to follow the edubuntu guides on that04:02
IsleVegan192.168.0.25404:03
lnsthat's eth0 IP address?04:03
IsleVeganyes04:03
lnsis it connected to the network?04:04
lnscan you ping out?04:04
IsleVeganwell, i'm using eth1 for that04:04
lnsbut the server can get to the net?04:04
IsleVeganyes04:04
IsleVeganon eth`104:05
lnsk04:05
IsleVeganeth104:05
lnsright04:05
lnsyou have dns set?04:05
IsleVeganyes04:05
lnsI only ask because i've had issues with dhcp before regarding reaching a dns server04:05
lnsk04:05
IsleVeganand i read that i should add 192.168.0.254 as a dns server as well04:05
lnsyou need to look in /var/log for clues as to why the "self test" fails04:05
IsleVegani put that at the end04:05
lnsi haven't used edubuntu in a while but yeah i think it acts as a dns cache server04:06
IsleVegani'll look at that log04:06
IsleVeganNo subnet declaration for eth0 (0.0.0.0).04:08
IsleVeganJan 28 18:02:47 edubuntu dhcpd: ** Ignoring requests on eth0.04:08
IsleVeganhmm04:08
lnsi've had that04:09
IsleVegani'll look at the syntax for dhcp.conf04:09
IsleVeganwhere to add the subnet, but not sure what to put, perhaps the same that is in the subnet for network control panel04:09
lnsno it's in there04:10
lnswhat is the full path to the dhcpd.conf file you pasted ?04:10
IsleVegan/etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf04:12
lnsdoes the log give the full path of the dhcpd.conf file it's crapping out on?04:12
lnssounds like it's looking at a different one04:12
IsleVegani'll look04:13
IsleVegani don't see it04:13
IsleVegani looked in syslog and daemon.log04:14
lnsweird04:14
lnsi don't have a conf file to compare to but everything looks ok to me (i'm sure i'm missing something)04:14
IsleVeganit's new to me :-o04:15
lnswell if it's saying you don't have a subnet declaration04:15
IsleVeganyeah, could it be just that it's wrong?04:15
lnsi would imagine it would have something specific (line foo: expecting ;) or something04:16
IsleVeganhmm, not sure what that means04:17
lnsit really seems to me that it's not looking at that dhcpd.conf file (i've seen multiple in edubuntu setups before)04:17
lnsis there a symlink in /etc/dhcpd.conf for /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf04:18
lns?04:18
IsleVegani'll look04:18
IsleVeganso, i would look in the /etc folder for dhcpd.conf?04:19
IsleVegani don't see that04:19
lnstry 'find /etc -name dhcpd.conf'04:20
IsleVegan/etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf04:20
IsleVegan/etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf04:20
lnsok try renaming /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf to something and symlinking that to /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf04:22
lnshmm04:23
lnsi mean04:23
lnssymlinking /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf to /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf04:24
lnswasn't very clear04:24
IsleVeganhow do i do that?04:24
lnsyou know how to rename a file?04:24
lnsmv04:24
IsleVeganmv is move, i guess, i can look it up online04:24
lnsick =p try this04:24
lnscd /etc/dhcp304:25
lnsmv dhcpd.conf dhcpd.conf.orig04:25
lnsln -s /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf dhcpd.conf04:25
lns/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart04:25
IsleVegansorry about my ignorance04:25
lnsno worries =)04:25
lnsyou're not doing bad04:25
IsleVeganthanks for being patient04:27
IsleVegandhcpd self-test failed. Please fix the config file.04:28
IsleVeganThe error was:04:28
lnsglad i had some time to kill ;) i love helping people since so many people have helped me04:28
IsleVeganthere is no error message listed04:28
lnsthat's weird04:29

lnshmm04:34
IsleVegannothing is plugged into the eth0 port from the motherboard04:34
IsleVegani have a router only04:34
lnsumm04:34
IsleVegannot sure if i can use that between eth0 and client04:35
IsleVeganor clients04:35
lnsarey ou just going to have 1 client?04:35
IsleVeganat this point, yes04:35
IsleVeganit's a demonstration project04:35
IsleVeganfor my school04:35
lnsdo you have a crossover cable?04:35
lnsi really have no clue at this point but dhcpd might look for link status on the adapter it's listening on04:35
IsleVegani don't have, which i'm concerned about, but i understand some ethernet ports can automatically do that...not sure if this can04:35
IsleVegani can plug it into the router, if you think that would be good04:36
lnsit's your network ;)04:36
IsleVegani have a d-link dgl-4100 router here04:37
IsleVeganwell, it is all experimental, so things can be changed04:37
lnsas long as eth0 has link to *something* that would satisfy dhcpd i would think (if it actually looks for link)04:37
IsleVeganok04:37
IsleVeganyou recommend plugging into wan or one of the lan ports on the router, or the client directly?04:38
lnslan04:38

musashiquick question. I'm having problems with cupsys crashing every day. restarting cupsys fixes the problem but I'd like something more permanent. One suggestion i had was to install hplip. The other was to update cups. I'm not sure how to do either. I have a default install of feisty and am leery of running all the updates as it's a high use lab and i don't want to break anything. Suggestions?20:28
johnnyif cups doesn't show up in the update manager. then there is no upgrade for fesity20:53
johnnyfeisty20:53
lnsis anyone using Koolu thin clients w/edubuntu (or ubuntu/ltsp) gutsy?21:00
musashijohnny: there are over 100 updates. how do i just update cups and nothing else? prefer cli as i remote admin it.21:25
johnnyuhmm.. you should know about apt-get then :)21:26
johnnycups might require newer stuff ..21:26
johnnyas well21:26
johnnydid you actually try looking at the cups logs and such?21:27
johnnyseeing what makes it die?21:27
musashijohnny: yeah, i know apt-get but not how to apt-get an update. no didn't check the logs. just heard that there is an update fixing the problem and wanted to try21:28
musashiwould sudo apt-get --reinstall install cups (or cupsys) do the trick?21:29
johnnythat would reinstall.. but not update21:29
musashiis there an update switch?21:29
johnnymusashi, read the apt-get man page21:29
johnnyit's all in there21:29
musashii did. i didn't see an option other than reinstall that would do what i want - upgrade one package and not a full upgrade.21:32
musashijust wanting some feedback if that's the right command or option21:32
musashiand which package to actually install -- cupsys, cups, cupsys-client, cupsys-common, there are a lot to choose from21:34
johnnydid you do a web search for apt-get upgrade a package?21:36
johnnyi don't have my ubuntu box on atm21:36
musashino, i know how to use apt-get. just wasn't sure about the upgrade bit (which is why i asked here).21:48
lnsmusashi, you should be able to just 'apt-get install <package>' to upgrade single packages21:56
lnsit's still going to pull all deps for that package thou (which is a good thing(tm))21:56
musashiwell i went ahead and did "sudo apt-get --reinstall install cupsys". I didn't pull anything in but gave me the new version. What i don't know is whether or not cupsys was THE package to install or if i need to so this with other cups packages21:58
lnswhen you install/upgrade a package with apt-get it will pull all necessary dependencies automatically22:03
lnsit's up to you to decide which package you need to upgrade though depending on your issue22:03
musashithanks for the info. i've upgraded a few things and will see how it goes.22:18
lnsnp musashi good luck22:27
