kadamHello!  I posted this is kubuntu-kde4, but I suspect it's not necessarily a KDE4 problem.  My taskbar buttons/widgets aren't showing sometimes, until I mouse over them.  They flicker, too, and the clock has flawed rendering until I mouse over it.  My video is also quite slow.  I have an NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra, 256MB, and the restriced driver installed.  Does anyone know what might be going on, or how to fix this?03:24

holanosrednaekim: hai i try on client?12:37
hansjdbtw... is there anything that can play wmv...12:37

nosrednaekimhola: oh... this is from within a virtualmachine?12:37

Dr_willisIts alll about the codecs :)12:38
holanosrednaekim: yes12:38
nosrednaekimhola: what?12:38
hansjdrephrase my question... what codec do i need12:38
holanosrednaekim: the problem is on virtual machine12:38
Dr_willisa wmv file can be any of a dozen codecs...12:38
ubotuThe Win32 codecs are available from the Medibuntu repositories (see « /msg ubotu medibuntu »), and for releases prior to Gutsy, also at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/SeveasPackages12:39

walmikpinepain: well it was kinda foolish of me... i had used Envy to install the driver and it had created a Nvidia control panel which was in Settings12:40
holanosrednaekim: i have 2 virtual machine, only one have this problem12:40
Dr_willisHmm.. I have to wonder how a zipped 'folder' is different from a ziped file. they would both be whatever.zip files.12:40
walmikpinepain: thanks for ur help anyways12:40
pinepainwalmik: and IE == m$ internet explorer?12:41

walmikpinepain: IE is internet explorer12:41

pinepain u use ie in win or in linux?12:42
monte48lowesI have to use IE at work. I came in late.. what's the question?12:43
walmikpinepain: i know wat u mean but then the client demands that all the site my company does must load in all browsers12:43
Dr_willishow can a zipped folder be any different from a zipped file.. zip files can contain foldera and files.12:43
walmikpinepain: i use it one of my machines just for testing12:43
walmikDr_willis: i dont want any file... i have to just make it availabl for all users to download it from a site i m working on12:44

LamerManhi everyone, i've found gdb 7.1 on one of file servers for apt/sources.list, but i'm not sure that the source is reliable enough. Could you suggest me some secure server that may contain the latest version of debuggers, compilers?17:19
LamerMani mean some server with deb packages17:20
LamerMannot to compile it17:20
NickPrestaLamerMan, what's wrong with gdb in the repos?17:20
biovorehe wants bleeding edge I think..17:21
LamerMani'm not sure that it does not contain trojans17:21
biovorethe repos are as secure as your going to get17:21
NickPrestaLamerMan, if you want bleeding edge but you're afraid to use other repos or publicly created debs, you have to compile.17:21
biovoreor security.ubuntu.org17:21
AMcBainNope, nothing to complain about this time. I got my Thunderbird profile to work under Kubuntu. I had to chmod rx permissions to all groups and chown the files to me (may not have been necessary) ...17:22
AMcBainSo I'm quite happy.17:22
NickPrestaYou can always use checkinstall to create a deb for installation.17:22
biovoreIf you making your own tool-chain for something.. your better of with sources..17:22
LamerManNickPresta, i believe there must be some official repositories with such gdb version. on official it's vey unlikely to contain some viruses17:23
NickPrestaLamerMan, the official repository of which you speak has gdb version 6.6, I believe17:23
biovorelatest gdb from gnu.org is 6.717:26
LamerMani was mistaken, there IS gdb 6.7 in official repositories, but when i perform "apt-get update", i can't see this version in aptitude. What's wrong? :)17:26
Dagakacan I install KDE 4.0.1 of kubuntu-desktop on an normal ubuntu 7.10 install?17:27
LamerManin my aptitude there is only gdb 6.617:27
biovorehave to install kubuntu-desktop then kde4 stuff.. but yes.. you can run gnome and kde on the same box17:27
NickPrestaLamerMan, in the official Ubuntu repositories, there is only version 6.6 available. 6.7 is not available yet.17:28
LamerManhttp://ru.archive.ubuntu.com contains 6.7.117:28
Dagakaok thanks biovore, so once I've installed kubuntu-desktop I just follow the instructions from here: http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.1.php ?17:28
LamerManis it not official?17:28
biovoreI think its not in there because is not part of the development tool-chain17:29
LamerManhow could i install it then?17:29
biovoregdb 6.6 vs 6.7 only realy has fixes for sparc and ppc in it..  Not much else.. unless you have problems with 6.6 for some reason.. 6.7 probably won't make a differance.17:31
NickPrestaLamerMan, you can install it via this deb file (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gdb/gdb_6.7.1-2ubuntu1_i386.deb). However, I don't know what additional or changed depends it has from 6.6 (if any) so use at own risk, since your package manager doesn't think you need to upgrade.17:32
LamerManNickPresta, thanks, if it can't install it by aptitude i will install it in theis way, but is there really no way to install it correctly? why aptitude does not the 6.7.1 version?17:34
LamerManwhy aptitude does not *list the 6.7.1 version?17:35
* BluesKaj suspects ultra-caution is LamerMan's philosophy 17:36
biovore6.7.1 is probably in testing17:37

I got the mouse nicely working trough the "walktrough" on the forums, but is there a way to check if the logitech mouse is connected? because if i don't connect the mouse, the laptop stalls when booting, if the mouse is connected, it works like a charm20:54

Enable the backports repository on Edgy to install sun-java6-jre. Please don't use Adept to install Java if you are on Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy) or earlier.20:56

nosrednaekimLWATCDR: still looking BTW ;)21:03
NickPrestamike, compiz is in development so while it isn't 100% stable (things may break or function incorrectly) it is fairly stable enough for regular desktop usage.21:03
LWATCDRokay I even tried a reboot21:03
michaelrobcan you change individual icon sizes in KDE?21:03
velh0my system just crashed for no reason :(21:04

LWATCDRI could always fall back and try Ubuntu, That is what I am running on my Desktop.21:04
nosrednaekimmichaelrob: no, I don't think so21:04
nosrednaekimmike: title bar and window decorations21:05
mikeso then I probably want that?21:05
nosrednaekimLWATCDR: its the asme kernel, so it will act the same way21:05
LWATCDRDoing an install isn't all that hard. I just don't want to go back to OpenSuse.21:05
BluesKajyakuzi, perhaps the xorg file needs some editing like you mentioned in input device/ "configured mouse" but I wouldn't know a command that will turn it off and on automatically when a mouse isn't needed21:05
NickPrestamike, you could say emerald is your theme manager and decorator.21:05
nosrednaekimmike: well, there is also compiz-kde, but emerald is way nicer21:05
mikeso then compiz is just the backend?21:06
LWATCDRI had it working in OpenSuse but I really hate yast and it is so cluttered comparied to Ubuntu/kUbuntu.21:06
acee1234jussi01: i was having issues with video glitching and you told be to do somethng at the command prompt what was that?21:06

yakuziBluesKaj: well if i would know how to see what's happening when booting, i could see where he hangs (there's an echo line in the bootable lomoco script)21:07
BluesKajSuse would be ok but the insistence on the yast repos system is it's downfall IMO21:07
acee1234jussi01: how?21:07

JoshOvkivelh0: everything crashes once in a while, besides it probly wasnt the linux kernal that crashed, but a problem inside on your install21:20
anon32nothing is completely reliable.21:21
anon32velh0, see if ctrl+alt+backspace works21:21
anon32if that doesn't try using ssh to login from another computer21:21
anon32than see if alt+sysrq+s/u/b (in that order) works21:21
anon32then just hard power cycle21:22
velh0hell...so what can i do to make it more stable? any help would be truly apreciated :)21:22
anon32if you have dodgy video drivers, go for a slower or older one that you know works21:22

anon32it's the "printscreen" button21:22
anon32usually next to scroll lock21:22
velh0im using a laptop21:23
yakuziBluesKaj: the line where it hangs is this "running local boot scripts (/etc/rc/local)" before that it gives the echo line... so my guess it's the lomoco setting done by boot that causes the problem21:24
LWATCDRWell if nothing else I really need a new battery for my notebook :)21:25

ubotuunagi: A large amount of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..."  Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out?22:54
=== Wasserstoff is now known as Hydrogone
anon32llutz, ok. Is there a way I could just use them straight from my Windows install without copying em over? Sounds like a waste of space to me.22:56
llutzanon32: you could link the win-fontsdir somewhere to be used within linux and add that to the font-manager i think22:57
=== chull is now known as chalNhubby
anon32another thing: does anything depend on msttcorefonts? if so, could I make apt pretend I have the package installed?22:58

llutzAgent_bob: does that work with just br0-device in VMs instead of using tun/tap?23:23
Agent_bobllutz that works for normal linux boot systems   i don't know about vmware23:24
Agent_bobit's worth a try tho23:24
Agent_bobif the bridge is seemless it should23:26
Agent_bobllutz are we talking a dmz or a hostile net ?23:27
Dhraakellianso /mnt vs. /media23:27
llutzAgent_bob: 1 PC + 1 virtualbox installation on it should share the pcs pppoe-connection23:28
Agent_bobDhraakellian depends on what you like.    i use mnt23:28
Dhraakellianthe former for more permanent stuff and the latter for temporary removable media?23:28
Agent_bobllutz yeah that should be easy23:28
llutzAgent_bob: _but_ they should "see" each other in the net, so NAT wouldn't work23:28
Agent_bobDhraakellian no. mnt for everything that init doesn't mount     my openion.23:29
Agent_bobllutz hmmm23:29
=== neville is now known as neville__
Agent_bobDhraakellian however the "ubuntu way" is to use /media/ for everything   so like i said, it depends on your preferances23:30

* Agent_bob wonders why symlinks ....23:32
