[17:56] <atsampson> one of mine is an ssh tunnel to another machine, so if the machine is down for a bit, it goes away and doesn't come back...
[17:56] <atsampson> (it used to be a daemontools service, which always retries, but with a brief delay between retries)
[17:56] <atsampson> I should note that other than that, upstart works very nicely for me :)
