siofwolvesI have an ati radeon 9800 gfx card. how do i find what driver i have installed and what if any do you recommend ?00:02
SlimeyPetesiofwolves: if you haven't deliberately installed the "official" driver then you have the OSS one.00:04
szakulecI'm trying to capture video from my webcam, but doing a simple cat /dev/video0 says no such device00:04
SlimeyPetethe OSS one is fine for 2d stuff but for video and 3d you want fglrx (the official one)00:04
vltHello. Any idea how I can access a running X showing an XDMPC login screen from kdm? I tried `x11vnc` but it failed.00:04
przemek_elo jestem nowym użytkownikiem linuxa czy mogłby ktoś mi pomóc??00:05
siofwolvesSlimeyPete, yup all kubuntu00:05
holahow i canc change UTC? my clock has UTC 1 hours plus00:07
argnelhmm, so i must kill -9 systemsettings, eh00:09
jussi01hola: i think it takes it from your bios iirc00:09
holajussi01: this is the problem....bios time is one hors less00:10
jeremeI have a font on my mac that I'd like to use in linux, however, on the mac the font has a 0 byte filesize00:12
jeremeI don't really get it.. Anyways, when I copy the font over to kubuntu, I get nothing00:13
jeremeany ideas?00:14
argneljereme: 0 byte file size according to what?00:14
jeremeaccording to ls00:14
jeremeand cat00:14
argnelfrom what? linux or macosx?00:14
jussi01jereme: you sure that you aren't copying a link/shortcut?00:14
jeremejussi01: the font actually isn't installed on my osx machine, but I can view the font and install it if I want... so it's not a shortcut no00:15
jeremeargnel, both linux and os x show 0 bytes00:15
argneljereme: what about Get Info from the Finder?00:15
jeremeargnel: same00:15
argneljereme: what is the Kind, according to Get Info?00:16
jeremethe DS_Store file seems to have all the goodies or something00:16
jeremeargnel: PostScript Type 100:16
argneljereme: did the font come from an os9 system?00:16
jeremeargnel: I don't think so, but I can't confirm that00:17
argneljereme: have you tried to actually add and use the font?00:17
jeremeI just pulled it from a network drive00:17
argnel(in macosx)00:17
argneli suspect you're just seeing the preview and that the actual font data has been stripped00:18
jeremeargnel, seems to work00:20
argneljereme: does Font Book see it?00:20
argnelok, try exporting it to your desktop00:20
jeremeargnel, that seems to work00:22
Lionowhat will chmod 0700/*   do?00:22
argneljereme: does getinfo think there is some data there now?00:22
argneljereme: ok, rightclick on it and create an archive (or Compress if it's Leopard). that'll make sure the resource fork comes along if it is in an older format00:23
szakulecchmod 0700 will make everything it touches only usable by your user name00:24
intelikeyno    by the owner of the inode00:25
szakulecthanks intelokey00:25
Lionoi dont wan a user to see/copy/edit/change/write    any file other than present on his desktop. how can i do it. (but i want that user to use apps or play games.(doing that will change e.g games files as some games chage files when they are play))00:26
Lionoszakulec ^00:26
argnelsounds a bit restrictive to me00:27
argnelkind of defeats the purpose of a home folder00:27
intelikeyperms are owner, group, world but it sounds like what you want is 700 $HOME dirs00:28
intelikeysudo chmod 700 /home/*00:29
szakulecmy webcam shows up in Kopete fine, but when I try to record from it, the webcam can't be found00:30
intelikeyif you really want what you described  you need to look into JAILing them with chroot00:30
intelikeywhich can be cracked (jail break)00:31
Arwenw00t, I finally have over 50% filesystem fragmentation00:33
* intelikey has .1%00:34
ArwenSysinfo for 'darknode': Linux 2.6.22-14-generic running KDE 3.5.8, CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz at 2992 MHz (5985 bogomips), HD: 66/73GB, RAM: 496/502MB, 117 proc's, 1.48h up00:35
Arwenext3 auto-defrag fails at high HD usage00:36
selckinget more hd00:36
intelikeyi'm not using a journald    ext200:37
ArwenI could, but I'd have to repartition again00:37
intelikeyArwen ?   could just mount other hd on high traffic area...00:38
BluesKajArwen, auto-defrag ...why ?00:39
BluesKajis fragmentation a prob in linux , after all ?00:40
intelikeyBluesKaj force a check next boot and see if it is00:41
intelikeywhat i mean is that the avrage user will never find trouble with it.   that does not mean that there are not special conditions that may cause high fragmentation.    it just means that 99.9% of user wont have that condition00:43
hitmanWillyoh nice, FS discussions :)00:44
* intelikey considers not using any fs....00:44
intelikeytotal chaos drive!   :)00:45
BluesKajintelikey, I don't leave my pc on at all times. I shut it off every eving at bedtime, so about once/month the disk does an auto check since it's rebooted  so many # of times , is that what you're referring to00:45
intelikeyBluesKaj yes that check.  but you can force that by several different means.    setting the mount count higher than the check count  is one.00:46
BluesKajintelikey, right , thx for the tip , I'll check into it.00:47
* intelikey doesn't have forced checks that he doesn't personally force. 00:48
intelikeyas soon as i make an ext2 fs i run tune2fs -m 0 -c 0 -i 0 /dev/that-device     so no forced checks that i don't call for.      (never have liked automatic crap, and i don't use cron either.)00:50
intelikeywe need more automatic things running using more kernel threads more cpu more ram so we can complain about our old slow outdated p12 122ghz 16core cpu, with 32g ram @ 4ghz fsb computers being so slow!00:59
hitmanWillyah, how I missed the intellikey rants :)01:00
intelikeyhitmanWilly  ;/01:01
hitmanWillyyeah, used to be pretty regular around here, then some other stuff started getting in the way...like my WoW addiction...lol01:01
intelikeyyeah,  games can be adictive.01:02
hitmanWillyyeah, tell me about it01:03
jhend60i need to know what the command to change video settings is (xorg video reconfigure) or something01:03
Dr_willis<danbhfive> jhend60: sudo dpkg-reonfigure -phigh xserver-xorg01:03

intelikeyhitmanWilly i used to play vidio games for a day at a time   when they were young.    now i can't find one that will last that long.     probably a good thing too.01:04
Dr_willisi pasted the answer he got from #ubuntu01:04
jhend60i havent installed kubuntu yet, but it seems to not work in xorg for some reason. I will try changing video settings to fix01:04
Daisuke_Idointelikey: nothing beats a good old fashioned adventure game01:04
jhend60as im not sure it detected it correctly in the first place01:05

dZen|n|azureus is a java based bittorrent01:09
Daisuke_Ido(i know what azureus is)01:09
jeremeis it possible to use pfm fonts in linux?01:09
Daisuke_Idowhy -f when installing the package?01:09
BluesKajforcing an install is dangerous , no /01:09

Daisuke_Idoand you're much better off with deluge or ktorrent anyway01:10
Daisuke_Idoazureus is a klugy mess and a cpu hog01:10
intelikeykulgy ?01:10
dZen|n|what else should I use ?01:11
BluesKajklunky and slow as molasses in january... nice java graphics tho :)01:11
intelikeya kugly mess01:11
Daisuke_Idoi just said: deluge or ktorrent01:11
Daisuke_Idoktorrent will integrate better01:11
hitmanWillyktorrent works pretty good for me, at least in a gui01:11
Dr_willisktorrent has gotten a lot better over the last few months.01:11
Daisuke_Idoyes, yes it has01:12
BluesKajDaisuke_Ido, I just adding my two cents worth01:12
Dr_willisIt uded to be real flakey for me. Now its very solid01:12
dZen|n|see this one http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/56170/01:12
Daisuke_IdoBluesKaj: you're absolutely right though, azureus is a massive chunk of fail01:12
dZen|n|no metter what i try to install, and I know it worked before.01:12
Daisuke_Idonow...  did you do what was suggested?01:13
Daisuke_Ido!aptfix | dZen|n|01:13
ubotudZen|n|: If an APT front-end crashed and your database is locked, try this in a !terminal: « sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a »01:13
dZen|n|Daisuke_Ido: yes I did01:13
Daisuke_Idoactually, in this case, i think you can go with sudo dpkg --configure -a01:13
Daisuke_Idothe one time i had that happen and couldn't do anything, using dpkg to remove the offending piece of software took care of it, if i remember correctly01:14
intelikeyDaisuke_Ido it looks more like he has removed main form his repos.01:14
dZen|n|Daisuke_Ido: but how and what shoudl I remove with dpkg ?01:15
intelikeyDaisuke_Ido yes forced removal will fix a lot of the time,  but that looks like a missing repo.01:15
intelikeydZen|n| sudo dpkg -P package-name01:15
BluesKajdZen|n|, post your /etc/apt/sources.list in pastebin , so we can check it out01:15
Daisuke_Idointelikey: yeah, it does...01:15
dZen|n|missing repo ?01:15
intelikeydZen|n| yes missing repo01:16
Daisuke_Idoit's there01:17
Daisuke_Idothat's not the problem then01:17
Daisuke_Idoit's not saying there's no installation candidate, it just says it's not going to be installed01:17
hitmanWillydependency conflicts?01:17
intelikeydZen|n| looks ok.   run the   sudo apt-get install -f    and show us the output.01:18
Daisuke_Idothat's  sudo apt-get -f install01:18
Daisuke_Idowith no packages01:19
BluesKajdZen|n|, uncomment lines 40, 41,47,48 (delete the # at the beginning of those lines) then save and exit , then sudo apt-get update in the terminal01:19
Daisuke_Idothere ya go01:19
intelikeysee that's what makes it hard to help people.   i saw y'all tell him to run -f way up there ^  and the error message he posted said run -f... but did he run -f  NOooo!01:21
dZen|n|intelikey: I did se tha last pastebin01:21
dZen|n|intelikey: this one http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/56171/01:22
Daisuke_IdodZen|n|: yeah, but you were told to waaaay earlier (-f without a package name, that's the important bit01:22
dZen|n|ups this one http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/56173/01:22
dZen|n|let me inform you that I installed 64bit kubuntu and then I unstalled 32bit libraries01:23
intelikeyDaisuke_Ido i'm sure you already know that, if -f yelds that "not going to be installed" message there is usually either a non-ubuntu package in the way or a repo missing   "actually the same thing said two ways"    i have see backports cause that when used to install things then switched off.01:24
Lionowhy do i need a firewall in linux.? i think linux is secure enough without it too. any comments?01:24
Daisuke_IdoLiono: you need a firewall?01:24
ubuntufreakdoes Kubuntu 7.10 have KDE4.0 in the torrent download01:25
LionoDaisuke_Ido no. i need to know the reason to have one in linux01:25
intelikeyLiono the thing about linux, or what linux is all about, is freedom. if you don't want to run a firewall, then don't.   if you do want to, then do.    that's what linux is for.01:25
Daisuke_Idoubuntufreak: it does not, you have to install from repos, but i'll tell you now it isn't stable yet and you're better off waiting a bit longer for 4.101:25
Daisuke_IdoLiono: 'twas a rhetorical question.  i don't run one01:26
hitmanWillyagreed on kde 4, been playing around with it for a while now01:26
ubuntufreakDaisuke_Ido: You mean KDE4.001:26
dZen|n|hello ppl, I have fixet my problem, but thx anyway!01:26
LionoDaisuke_Ido intelikey will firewall make me securer. why do i need one in linux. ?01:26
intelikeyLiono if nothing is listening on any port then a firewall adds nothing.   if you run services that listen, and you don't want the world connecting to them.  then you will want to "block" them somehow.01:26
Daisuke_Idoubuntufreak: correct01:26
dZen|n|I would like to give you a beer but I can't :d01:26
Daisuke_Idobut the kde4 line period isn't stable yet01:26
ubuntufreakDaisuke_Ido: OK01:26
dZen|n|I will wait for 4.1 kde :P01:27
Daisuke_Idoi'll wait for gnome 3 :D01:27
Lionointelikey what will happen if i dont block the world?01:27
hitmanWillyugh, gnome....01:27
siofwolvesI have my  sound up 100% but the output is <40% what i had in windows. any idea's on where i'm looking?01:27
dZen|n|Daisuke_Ido: my next distro should be gentoo01:27
intelikeyLiono then someone in #kubuntu will try to hack your box01:28
intelikeyor some other place where such types lurk.01:28
hitmanWillydZen|n|, heh, have fun...lol01:28
* nosrednaekim starts cracking away01:28
BluesKajsiofwolves, alsamixer in the terminal . check out the vol ctrls there01:28
Lionointelikey if i have all ports not listening. but iam browsing and port 80 is open. can some one hack me if i have no firewall?01:28
hitmanWillyLiono, a firewall won't really help that since the port's open anyway01:29
dZen|n|hitmanWilly: well I heard that if you wanna learn the linux inside and out you should use gentoo, I will try to install it via vmware01:29
LionohitmanWilly you mean the port 80?01:30
Daisuke_IdoLiono: you're normally a windows user, aren't you?01:30
intelikeyLiono in all honesty. if i were the type that did that sort of thing,  i would hang out in places like #ubntu (because of it's size) and watch for people like you, asking questions about that sort of thing.01:30
LionohitmanWilly but a firewall can  reject unauthorised port connection?01:30
siofwolvesBluesKaj, thanks so much :)01:30
Daisuke_Idointelikey: or people like me that advertise not using a firewall?01:30
intelikeyLiono if you have port 80 open then you must be running a server   (apache maybe) ?01:30
hitmanWillydZen|n|, oh, you'll learn...or give up...this is being typed from my gentoo box right now :)01:30
dZen|n|hitmanWilly: thats nice, then I will yell after you help some times :D01:31
Lionointelikey ill be haveing port 80 open if iam browsing too01:31
intelikeyDaisuke_Ido that too.   but less so, because that's a pretty good trap.   "come into my laire said the spider to the fly"01:31
=== FX is now known as FXRS
intelikeyLiono you will ?      do i have port 80 open ?01:32
BluesKajsiofwolves, YW :)01:32
dZen|n|Liono: I can sell you arca unit firewall01:32
Lionointelikey ill be haveing port 80 open if iam browsing too?01:32
ignoramushi all.  how do i uninstall Ubuntu Studio's kernel? (2.6.22-14-rt)01:32
intelikeyLiono that's what i'm asking,  is my port 80 open ?   i'm looking at a webpage.01:33
dZen|n|Liono: port 80 = http01:33
intelikeyLiono in short.   NO.01:33
Lionointelikey i think yes01:33
Lionowhy no01:33
Lionoyou surf by port 8001:33
Lionoand it should be open01:33
BluesKajLiono, go to www.grc.com and do thestealth test there01:33
stratman4300Anyone run into a problem with X hanging at KDE logout or shutdown???01:34
hitmanWillyyes, you surf by port 80, but it's all outgoing requests01:34
dZen|n|later, going to play some et-linux :p01:34
hitmanWillyan open port generally refers to one that is accepting incoming connection requests01:35
hitmanWillybut then again, I'm not really an expert on the subject01:36
Daisuke_Idothat's it01:38
Dr_willisstratman4300,  ages ago i had an issue like that with my ati  based machine01:42
BluesKajI feel for these poor MS windows users , who are so worried about internet security , the F.U.D is rampant in their minds01:42
BluesKajFUD ,a bill gates legacy01:43
Daisuke_IdoBluesKaj: tell them they don't particularly *need* a virus scanner, spyware detector, adware detector, three firewalls, and a pentagram drawn in blood around their computer, and they refuse to believe you!01:43
BluesKajLOL ! Daisuke_ :>))01:44
intelikeyja ja ja ja01:44
intelikeybut if i browse.....    well the simple answer is "THEN DON'T BROWSE"   i mean what do you want from me....01:45
intelikeylike i have said a thousand times.  there is not one bite of data on this computer that would bother me if the whole world knew it.     'hack me'01:46
stratman4300DR_willis: what solved the issue???01:46
stratman4300DR_willis: I have an ATI based system too01:47
intelikeythere is not one password.   and not even one full name.    "hack me"01:47
BluesKajstratman4300, which ati card ?01:47
intelikey</rant> ok hitman. i'm done.01:48
stratman4300blueskaj; ati xpress 125001:48
BluesKajstratman4300, just for your info : I have the x200g and reverted to the restricted driver in system settings/advanced after trying the ati new proprietaries01:49
Dr_willisstratman4300,  i recall tellikg kdm/gdm to 'always restart the x server' - But i havent had that issue since the gutsy release01:49
BluesKajstratman4300, if you installed one of the new ati proprietary drivers it must be uninstalled first in oder for the enabled default restricted driver to take over.01:51
motwhat is the difference beteween "vmsize" and  "vmrss" in the kde process table?01:51
stratman4300dr_willis: do i set that within the KDM configuration menu01:53
stratman4300BluesKaj: do the default restricted drivers support compiz???01:53
ubotuKubuntu is not shipping with compiz installed or enabled by default. You can still install it and have your eyecandy goodness. The instructions are at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion - further help in #compiz-fusion01:54

phobesintelikey - apologies for the noob question, but how do I pass kernel parameters?02:02
intelikeyLiono so use the cli if you can't find a gui for it.    groupadd groupdel useradd02:02
phobes(I don't think I ever get a console)02:02
Dr_willisstratman4300,  a system wide config file would not be in the users home dirs. :)02:03
intelikeyLiono what do you mean "where can i edite privilages" ?02:03
Dr_willisstratman4300, use -->  locate kdmrc02:03
stratman4300Dr_willis: lol....  i suppose your right.....   hehe02:03
Dr_williswhich finds it in --> /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc02:03
intelikeyphobes the boot screen that allows you to select safe graphics mode also allows you to pass kernel params02:04

However, the term is often used for setups using alternative but different software, such as Perl or Python instead of PHP, and Postgres instead of MySQL. ubotuIf you're having problems with sound, first ensure ARTS is running, by going to K Menu -> System Settings -> Sound System and making sure "Enable the sound system" is checked. If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - For playing audio files, see !Players and !MP307:27

ForgeAuserm sorry stdin I didn't know12:34

Dr_Willisi find all the os-x wanna-be docks lacking.. of course i find the os-x dock lacking.12:44
ForgeAushehe DrWillis, thats informative, question is what do you find NOT lacking?12:44
Dr_WillisThe Bills...12:44
Dr_WillisI am not lacking in Bills i get in the mail.12:44
ForgeAuslets restrict the domain to dock-bars ok?12:45
Dr_WillisI find the normal kde panel, very useable. - The combination of  a launcher+ task manager.. just seems to muddy things.12:45
ForgeAusI can agree there12:45
prince_jammysme 212:45
Dr_WillisToo many little 'things' to indicate this or that.. it seems wth a lot of these docks.12:46
prince_jammysdown with the dock12:46
MrJigsawWhen i try to CUT files from desktop to /media/sda1 examplewise..  i get this: http://peecee.dk/upload/view/97944/full .. how do i make that stop ?12:46
prince_jammysalways springs up when i don't want it to12:46
Dr_Willisdoes the icons sort of zooming up - really make it easier for me to lauch them? :) heh and so on.12:46
Dr_WillisOf course with widescreen monitors. I find a panel on the side with icons - to be a bit more convient then one way across the bottom.12:47
ForgeAusMrJigsaw looks like a permissions problem are you root?12:47
MrJigsawim not logged in as root, no.12:47
ForgeAusthen thats likely why12:47
MrJigsawCant i give my user the rights to cut files ? ;/12:47
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: you don't have right to write12:48
ForgeAusthe /mnt/ branch of the file system isn't under /home/<username>12:48
MrJigsawrights to write to harddrive ?12:48
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: you are pasting a file into /media/sda1 and get a permissions error, correct?12:48
Dr_Willisfiles/dirs have their own rights also.  depemnding on the filesystem12:49
ForgeAusa user can only work within their /home/<username> branch without requiring permission (aside from executing files and some other minor things))12:49
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: or moving a file from /media/sda1 and get a permissions error12:49
siofwolvesmy display is stuck at 640 x 480 and thats the only mode available in 'Monitor & Display System Settings'. someone helped me fix it last week, but i don't have the logs. any idea's?12:50
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: my guess is that then your user doesn't have the rights to mess with the contents of /media/sda112:50
ForgeAussiofwolves which video card have you got?12:50
Dr_Willisis sda1 a windows disk? or linux filesystem?12:50
siofwolvesForgeAus, ati radeon 980012:50
ubotuTo install the Ati/NVidia drivers for your video card, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto12:50
siofwolvesForgeAus, thanks. but someone gave me a command sudo -- - -  -- whatever and the list of display modes reappeared.12:52
ForgeAushehe sudo just means run as root (superuser do)12:52
siofwolvesi'm logging now btw ;)12:52
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: how about the output of -->     ls -l  /media    <-- the line with sda112:52
ForgeAus/media? prince?12:53
prince_jammysForgeAus: isnt that the name of his dir?12:53
happyfinally got Xinerama working12:53
ForgeAusum I think they go to /mnt12:54
ForgeAus(not sure about that)12:54
prince_jammysForgeAus: he has it mounted on /media/sda112:54
Dr_Willisive not noticed ubuntu/kubuntu putting stuff in mnt12:54
ForgeAusok sorry my bad then12:55
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: yeah so paste that line here12:55
ForgeAuswhat filesystem is sda1?12:55
ForgeAusahh try unmounting it12:55
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: we will see who owns it, and what the permissions are12:55
ForgeAus(ie sudo umount /dev/sda1)12:56
ForgeAusthen remount it using ntfsmount12:56
ForgeAus(or another fusemount like ntfs-3g)12:56
MrJigsawdrwxrwx--- 1 root     plugdev    4096 2008-02-16 13:55 sda112:56
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: there you have it, owned by root12:56
ForgeAusyou don't have write access to an NTFS paritition12:56
Dr_Willisi always just install/run the ntfs-config tool12:57
ForgeAusDrWillis that sounds like a shortcut that I was unaware of :)12:57
prince_jammyshe has it set up in fstab12:57
Dr_WillisForgeAus,  it will modify the fstab thats using ntfs, to be using ntfs-3g and set the proper options to allow users to access them12:57
prince_jammysshould be able to write, but not as his user ... set up in fstab with ntfs-3g12:57
prince_jammysprince_jammys: i already did this with him a couple of days ago12:58
prince_jammystalkin to myself12:58
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: the output of -->    grep '/media/sda1'  /etc/fstab12:59

Dr_Willis /dev/sda2  /media/sda2 ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 112:59
Dr_Willisis what i am using.12:59
ForgeAusbtw SKing if your still here that spash screen was nice :)12:59
Dr_WillisMrJigsaw,  that would be very very.. odd...12:59
MrJigsawUUID=09B5974762077941 /media/sda1 ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=0,gid=46,auto,rw,nouser 0 112:59
ForgeAusI agree Dr Willis12:59
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: did you change it??12:59
Dr_Williswhat are we tryign to do wih this hard drive anyway? Just copy some files to it?13:00
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: uid=0 is root13:00
MrJigsawNope prince_jammys..13:00
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: the output of --> echo $UID13:00
Dr_Willisand its using ntfs. not ntfs-3g like mine. :)13:00
ForgeAusMrJigsaw in any case if you use kdesu to run dolphin it should allow you to13:00
ForgeAusDrWillis it does state rw there...13:00
MrJigsawkdesu ?13:01
Dr_Willisyea - i did NOT think ntfs allowed rw however.13:01
ForgeAuskde superuser13:01
MrJigsawI just right click -> cut -> Paste at harddrive :)13:01
Dr_Willisbut thats from ages ago. :) it may allow it now a days13:01
ForgeAussimilar to cli sudo command13:01
ForgeAusbut for gui programs13:01
ForgeAusso run konsole and type in kdesu dolphin13:01
ForgeAusand it should let you copy13:01
MrJigsawprince_jammys: should uid be 1000 at sda1 ?13:01
ForgeAuscut or whatever13:01
MrJigsawprince_jammys: it was sdb1 we sat up yesterday :-)13:01
ForgeAusbecause it gives you root perimissions13:02
Dr_Willisuid of 1000 shouldlet the first user access the drive.13:02
Dr_WillisYou proberly dont want the 'nouser' option either.13:02
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: should also be ntfs-3g13:02
Dr_WillisI dont see much gain from using ntfs, when ntfs-3g works so well13:02
ForgeAus(also note: if your using kde4 I think its kdesudo)13:02
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: type        kdesudo kate13:02
MrJigsawUUID=09B5974762077941 /media/sda1 ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=0,gid=46,auto,rw,nouser 0 1 - What should i change ?13:03
Dr_Willis /dev/sda1  /media/sda1  ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 113:03
MrJigsawIm openning it in krusader prince_jammys.13:03
MrJigsawas Root13:03
Dr_Willis:) iw what i would do with that line.13:03
ForgeAusnice :) I like krusader :)13:03
vltHello. Since the recent big update for kde programs (example line from /var/log/aptitude: [UPGRADE] konqueror-nsplugins 4:3.5.2-0ubuntu27.3 -> 4:3.5.2-0ubuntu27.4)13:03
ForgeAuseven better13:03
Dr_Williswell you can keep the uuid bit if you want.13:03
vlt... nspluginviewer crashes everytime.13:03
vltAny known solution?13:03
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: DO NOT change the line --- stick a # at the beginning13:03
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: in case you want it back13:04
Dr_Williscomment the line, then create a new line aftwerwards :) is what we are saying.13:04
Dr_Willis# old fstab line here13:04
Dr_Willisnew fstab line here13:04
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: try-->UUID=09B5974762077941 /media/sda1 ntfs umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000  0   013:05
prince_jammysntfs-3g excuse me13:05
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: try-->UUID=09B5974762077941 /media/sda1 ntfs-3g umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000  0   013:05
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: make sure there is a blank line at the end of the file13:07
MrJigsawShould i restart when i wrote that in prince_jammys?13:08
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: then --> sudo umount /media/disk   and then --> sudo mount /media/disk13:08
jarule2how do i do the same thing others doing whom i don't even like and they are nothing doing the same thing as i am doing by nature like color of skin? or do i have to do everything the other person does?13:08
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: try it without restarting13:08
siofwolvesForgeAus, sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg was what i needed.13:09
jussi01jarule2: ?13:09
ForgeAussiof do you have ati drivers installed?13:09
orbitizeWhen I start my computer, I have to log in (no gui), then run sudo kdm to get to the normal login-screen. How can I fix this?13:09
ForgeAusyou may still need the binary driver13:09
ForgeAus(especially if you want OGL/flxgr/XGL)13:10
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: once mounted, do --> cd /media/disk13:10
prince_jammysMrJigsaw: and then type--> touch crap13:10
ForgeAusotherwise you're probably only working on VESA drivers for your X-server anyway (don't quote me on that I don't know for sure)13:10
siofwolvesForgeAus, not sure. after switching on today my display was stuck at 680 x 460. also i must mention my keyboard setup is not correct. maybe related?13:11
* ForgeAus shrugs it could be if your xorg.conf was modifed or something like that13:11
ForgeAusthe file resides as /etc/X11/xorg.conf from memory13:12

ForgeAusow do I mount an .iso? : mount /home/ubuntu/supergrubdisk_0.9677.iso /mnt/supergrub -o loop ??? (gives invalid argument)13:28
ForgeAusthe exact error is: ioctl: LOOP_SET_FD: Invalid argument13:28
ubotuTo mount an ISO disc image, type « sudo mount -o loop <ISO-filename> <mountpoint> » - There is a list of useful cd image conversion tools at http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/CD_Image_Conversion - Always verify the ISO using !MD5 before !burning.13:28
Dr_Willislets see..13:28
Dr_Williswell you may need a sudo. and that dir needs to exizt13:29
ForgeAusyeah it does afaik I did an mkdir first13:29
Dr_Willisand your order of options may be wrong.. :)13:29
ForgeAusand I was already sudo (ie sudo -i)13:29
Dr_Willisi think the -o loop has to be befor the other stuff13:30
ForgeAushmm now I have it saying mount: can't find /mnt/supergrub in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab13:30
ForgeAusits not meant to be in there is it?13:30

Daisuke_Idoof course, if you shut down while on battery power, charge while it's off, then reboot on battery power, it's going to be wrong17:21

beerhello. I've enabled the driver for my ati radeon card in system settings > advanced > restricted drivers. all went well, installed etc. when i reboot though my system doesn't load. i'm running here off the live cd. my question is, how can i remove/disable the driver from here?17:49
trembybeer -- you shouldn't have to remove the driver from there. instead you can edit your xorg.conf file to start up using a simpler driver, such as vesa. then you should be able to get x started and do any fixing without need of the livecd17:50
beertremby: ok. thanks.17:52
BluesKajbeer, tremby..there's another option most ppl don't think of . Instead of removing the graphics card driver or installing a proprietary one, take a look at the monitor driver , sometimes that's the culprit17:53
PolitikerALTdoes kubuntu hardy work fine on amd64?17:53
BluesKajnot all plugins are available for 64bit17:54
PolitikerALTis there a list which plugins are not availible?17:54
BluesKajPolitikerALT, personally I reverted to 32 bit on my amd 64 pc due to those probs17:55
PolitikerALTmom - do you mean that plugins are missing compared to 32bit or compared to 64bit gutsy? The latter wouldn't be a problem because gutsy works rather fine for me17:57
Serenhi got a quick question17:57
SerenI can't unlock "kicker"17:57
SerenI tried dpkg-reconfigure17:57
Serenand removing kickerrc without success17:57
Serenanyone got an idea ?17:58
Seren( if I right click on kicker and select "unlock panel" nothing happens )17:58
Daisuke_IdoPolitikerALT: unless you're running better than 4gb ram, 32-bit will work fine for yu17:58
PolitikerALTsure - but: why having a 64-bit CPU and a 32-bit OS?18:00
Daisuke_Idobecause 64-bit just isn't needed for 90% of home users yet18:01
BluesKajPolitikerALT, it's an unfortunate reality that 64 bit in linux generally has little advantage over 32 speedwise and support in terms of apps that can take advantage of it18:02
Daisuke_Idocpus went to 64 bit, but that doesn't mean that you have to jump straight to the new OS...  there are still issues, and while you CAN use the 64-bit OS, if you weigh the headache of getting common things working to the minimal (if any) performance increase, you'll likely find you're better off with the 32 bit version18:02
beeri'm trying to access my kubuntu hard drive while running off this live cd, i'm getting 'hal-storage-fixed-mount refused uid 999' though. how do i mount it. i believe its /dev/sda6.18:03
PolitikerALTCurrently I have no issues except not being able to hibernate - I just want to know if I should wait for upgrading my gutsy to 64-bit or not (because there was an 64-bit bug - you could not boot)18:04
jhutchinsbeer: How are you trying to mount it?18:05
Daisuke_IdoPolitikerALT: as i said.  it's a pain getting flash, java, etc etc working.  if you don't use those things or don't mind a little frustrated screaming while you're trying to get them all working properly, go ahead and upgrade.  if you would prefer to keep your sanity and your hair, stick with 32-bit18:05
jhutchinsBasically if you actually need 64b you'll know.18:06
* BluesKaj has "some" hair left 18:06
NickPrestaPolitikerALT, make a chart. Compare the benefits and the drawbacks of a 64-bit system.18:06

Daisuke_Ido-biggest +only18:11
PolitikerNEUI'm sure I won't need more than 2 GB of ram and I know 32-bit may be better. But all I want to know is if the 64-bit bug in Hardy is fixed or not because 64-bit Gutsy works fine for me (Don't need flash; had no problems with java)18:12

romunovif i create a file.txt, i keep getting a file called samefilename.txt~ in the directory. this latter file never disappears. what's up?21:13
lorddemon666scjp_: it is text file. if you don't have any other oracle instances (ie. oracle 9i) on the same machine it is safe to delete it after uninstall21:14
mefisto__romunov: it's just a backup when you edit and save the .txt file21:14
scjp_lorddemon666, so i will do that sudo apt-get remove oracle-xe and then i will remove the oratab, Next time when i will install the oracle it will not pick the files and do the new installation21:14
scjp_lorddemon666, is that rite becoz i removed oracle and then installed it again but it just picked up the old files and there is no oracle-xe file so that i can configure it21:15

ldtry as root 'cat /etc/passwd | grep oracle'. DO NOT PASTE RESULTS HERE22:33
hydrogengrep oracle /etc/passwd22:34
ldscjp_: it should print a line of records separated by colon (:)22:34
hydrogenextra pipes make the hydrogen cry22:34
ldscjp_: the one but last is the home directory22:35
scjp_ld, okie the command you gave it doesnt work but "grep oracle /etc/passwd" works22:35
rufuseverytime I try to compile something, I get an error22:36
rufusC compiler can not make executables22:36
rufushow can I fix this?22:36
crimsun_rufus: sudo apt-get --reinstall install build-essential22:36
scjp_ld, okie now i got the results  ?22:36
ldscjp_: results should look like: jekyll:x:1001:1001::/home/jekyll:/bin/sh22:36
scjp_ld, yep it is22:37
ldscjp_:  /home/jekyll is the home directory for jekyll account22:37
ldscjp_: do you know oracle home directory now?22:38
scjp_ld, but here it say   "       oracle:x:1000:1000::/usr/lib/oracle/xe:/bin/bash "22:38
hydrogen /usr/lib/oracle/xe22:38
hydrogenis the home22:38
scjp_hydrogen, okie22:39
scjp_ld, now ?22:39
ldbtw hydrogen: why cat /etc/passwd | grep ACCOUNT_NAME doesn't work?22:39
hydrogenno clue22:40
prince_jammysld no idea but to make shorter in the future   cat blah | grep pattern  === grep pattern blah22:40
ldscjp_: now we know the home dir for oracle user. to not to mess it longer i propose editing your oracle profile files without changing any paths22:41
prince_jammysif the user name has funky chars, that may affect the grep match22:43
scjp_ld, okie so the profile will be .bash_history or .bash_profile22:43
ldscjp_: you should add to profile (the file is /usr/lib/oracle/xe/.bash_profile) lines like those: 'export ORACLE_HOME='/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server'22:43
ldscjp_: and another line 'export ORACLE_SID=XE'22:44
scjp_ld, okie but if there is no file called .bash_profile can i create one22:44
rufushow can I run "Plasmoids"?22:44
ldscjp_: of course22:44
ldscjp_: it will be read and executed by bash as the first thing ofter logon (or su - XXX)22:45
scjp_ld, so it will be just only these two lines in the file nothing else,22:45
ldscjp_: those should do by now22:46
scjp_ld,  do you think that it will be like .bashrc file not .bash_profile22:46
prince_jammys.bashrcis the ubuntu way22:46
ldscjp_: my way is not ubuntu only like, my way is linux general like22:47
prince_jammys.bash_profile may work (other distros use it)22:47
ldscjp_: what prince_jammys sais should work for you22:47
hydrogenyou are confusing two entirely different files22:47
prince_jammyshydrogen: yes, but are not things that are normally done in .bash_profile ,, done in .bashrc in ubuntu?22:48
hydrogen.profile is sourced by a login shell.  Bash also sources .bash_profile if it exists.   .bashrc is sourced by a non-logon shell.  Putting it in .bashrc would only affect a terminal22:48
hydrogenprince_jammys: no22:48
hydrogenman bash22:49
prince_jammysasked that once here, got the wrong answer apparently22:50
scjp_ld, its done22:50
ldscjp_: after you login as oracle by 'su - oracle', what does the command 'env | grep ORA' returns?22:51
ldscjp_: in your case 'sudo su - oracle'22:52
scjp_ld, ORACLE_SID=XE22:52
scjp_ld,  that whats print out !22:53
ldscjp_: ok22:53
ldscjp_: now try 'sqlplus /nolog' as oracle user22:54
scjp_ld, command not found22:55
ldscjp_: '$ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus /nolog'22:55
scjp_ld, sql shell now ?22:56

I'm following this guide: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Tvout23:06
scjp_ld, and i got the error message after entering that command which i pasted it23:08
ldscjp_: now i can confirm there is some fatal problem with your oracle installation. in most cases if standard tools fails, internal tools work like a charm.23:08
scjp_ld, okie now what should i do ?23:09
ldscjp_: i never experienced such a problem. there is not much left but trying to reinstall oracle-xe. this time if you will pass any warning or error messages during installation, maybe we will succseed23:12
scjp_ld, okie boss but the problem is that i cannot be able to completely remove the whole installation of oracle-xe from the system,23:12
ldscjp_: what idicates that oracle is not beeing completely removed?23:13
scjp_ld, okie when i enter the command sudo apt-get install oracle-xe and its start reading the database, instead of installing it and use the previous version of installation23:15

unagilike alt+f4?23:17
