siofwolvesI have an ati radeon 9800 gfx card. how do i find what driver i have installed and what if any do you recommend ?00:02
SlimeyPetesiofwolves: if you haven't deliberately installed the "official" driver then you have the OSS one.00:04
szakulecI'm trying to capture video from my webcam, but doing a simple cat /dev/video0 says no such device00:04
SlimeyPetethe OSS one is fine for 2d stuff but for video and 3d you want fglrx (the official one)00:04
vltHello. Any idea how I can access a running X showing an XDMPC login screen from kdm? I tried `x11vnc` but it failed.00:04
przemek_elo jestem nowym użytkownikiem linuxa czy mogłby ktoś mi pomóc??00:05
siofwolvesSlimeyPete, yup all kubuntu00:05
holahow i canc change UTC? my clock has UTC 1 hours plus00:07
argnelhmm, so i must kill -9 systemsettings, eh00:09
jussi01hola: i think it takes it from your bios iirc00:09
holajussi01: this is the problem....bios time is one hors less00:10
jeremeI have a font on my mac that I'd like to use in linux, however, on the mac the font has a 0 byte filesize00:12
jeremeI don't really get it.. Anyways, when I copy the font over to kubuntu, I get nothing00:13
jeremeany ideas?00:14
argneljereme: 0 byte file size according to what?00:14
jeremeaccording to ls00:14
jeremeand cat00:14
argnelfrom what? linux or macosx?00:14
jussi01jereme: you sure that you aren't copying a link/shortcut?00:14
jeremejussi01: the font actually isn't installed on my osx machine, but I can view the font and install it if I want... so it's not a shortcut no00:15
jeremeargnel, both linux and os x show 0 bytes00:15
argneljereme: what about Get Info from the Finder?00:15
jeremeargnel: same00:15
argneljereme: what is the Kind, according to Get Info?00:16
jeremethe DS_Store file seems to have all the goodies or something00:16
jeremeargnel: PostScript Type 100:16
argneljereme: did the font come from an os9 system?00:16
jeremeargnel: I don't think so, but I can't confirm that00:17
argneljereme: have you tried to actually add and use the font?00:17
jeremeI just pulled it from a network drive00:17
argnel(in macosx)00:17
argneli suspect you're just seeing the preview and that the actual font data has been stripped00:18
jeremeargnel, seems to work00:20
argneljereme: does Font Book see it?00:20
jeremeyeah00:20
argnelok, try exporting it to your desktop00:20
alessandro_ciao00:20
jeremeargnel, that seems to work00:22
Lionowhat will chmod 0700/*   do?00:22
argneljereme: does getinfo think there is some data there now?00:22
jeremeyeah00:23
argneljereme: ok, rightclick on it and create an archive (or Compress if it's Leopard). that'll make sure the resource fork comes along if it is in an older format00:23
szakulecchmod 0700 will make everything it touches only usable by your user name00:24
intelikeyno    by the owner of the inode00:25
szakulecthanks intelokey00:25
Lionoi dont wan a user to see/copy/edit/change/write    any file other than present on his desktop. how can i do it. (but i want that user to use apps or play games.(doing that will change e.g games files as some games chage files when they are play))00:26
Lionoszakulec ^00:26
argnelsounds a bit restrictive to me00:27
Lionohm00:27
argnelkind of defeats the purpose of a home folder00:27
intelikeyperms are owner, group, world but it sounds like what you want is 700 $HOME dirs00:28
intelikeysudo chmod 700 /home/*00:29
szakulecmy webcam shows up in Kopete fine, but when I try to record from it, the webcam can't be found00:30
intelikeyif you really want what you described  you need to look into JAILing them with chroot00:30
intelikeywhich can be cracked (jail break)00:31
Arwenw00t, I finally have over 50% filesystem fragmentation00:33
* intelikey has .1%00:34
ArwenSysinfo for 'darknode': Linux 2.6.22-14-generic running KDE 3.5.8, CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz at 2992 MHz (5985 bogomips), HD: 66/73GB, RAM: 496/502MB, 117 proc's, 1.48h up00:35
Arwenext3 auto-defrag fails at high HD usage00:36
selckinget more hd00:36
intelikeyi'm not using a journald    ext200:37
ArwenI could, but I'd have to repartition again00:37
intelikeyArwen ?   could just mount other hd on high traffic area...00:38
BluesKajArwen, auto-defrag ...why ?00:39
BluesKajis fragmentation a prob in linux , after all ?00:40
intelikeyBluesKaj force a check next boot and see if it is00:41
intelikeywhat i mean is that the avrage user will never find trouble with it.   that does not mean that there are not special conditions that may cause high fragmentation.    it just means that 99.9% of user wont have that condition00:43
hitmanWillyoh nice, FS discussions :)00:44
* intelikey considers not using any fs....00:44
hitmanWillylol00:44
intelikeytotal chaos drive!   :)00:45
BluesKajintelikey, I don't leave my pc on at all times. I shut it off every eving at bedtime, so about once/month the disk does an auto check since it's rebooted  so many # of times , is that what you're referring to00:45
BluesKaj?00:45
intelikeyBluesKaj yes that check.  but you can force that by several different means.    setting the mount count higher than the check count  is one.00:46
BluesKajintelikey, right , thx for the tip , I'll check into it.00:47
* intelikey doesn't have forced checks that he doesn't personally force. 00:48
intelikeyas soon as i make an ext2 fs i run tune2fs -m 0 -c 0 -i 0 /dev/that-device     so no forced checks that i don't call for.      (never have liked automatic crap, and i don't use cron either.)00:50
intelikeywe need more automatic things running using more kernel threads more cpu more ram so we can complain about our old slow outdated p12 122ghz 16core cpu, with 32g ram @ 4ghz fsb computers being so slow!00:59

Daisuke_Idoi just said: deluge or ktorrent01:11
Daisuke_Idoktorrent will integrate better01:11
hitmanWillyktorrent works pretty good for me, at least in a gui01:11
Dr_willisktorrent has gotten a lot better over the last few months.01:11
Daisuke_Idoyes, yes it has01:12
BluesKajDaisuke_Ido, I just adding my two cents worth01:12
Dr_willisIt uded to be real flakey for me. Now its very solid01:12
dZen|n|see this one http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/56170/01:12
Daisuke_IdoBluesKaj: you're absolutely right though, azureus is a massive chunk of fail01:12
dZen|n|no metter what i try to install, and I know it worked before.01:12
Daisuke_Idonow...  did you do what was suggested?01:13
Daisuke_Ido!aptfix | dZen|n|01:13
ubotudZen|n|: If an APT front-end crashed and your database is locked, try this in a !terminal: « sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a »01:13
dZen|n|Daisuke_Ido: yes I did01:13
Daisuke_Idoactually, in this case, i think you can go with sudo dpkg --configure -a01:13
Daisuke_Idothe one time i had that happen and couldn't do anything, using dpkg to remove the offending piece of software took care of it, if i remember correctly01:14
intelikeyDaisuke_Ido it looks more like he has removed main form his repos.01:14
dZen|n|Daisuke_Ido: but how and what shoudl I remove with dpkg ?01:15
intelikeyDaisuke_Ido yes forced removal will fix a lot of the time,  but that looks like a missing repo.01:15
intelikeydZen|n| sudo dpkg -P package-name01:15
BluesKajdZen|n|, post your /etc/apt/sources.list in pastebin , so we can check it out01:15

intelikeydZen|n| yes missing repo01:16
dZen|n|http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/56171/01:16
Daisuke_Idoit's there01:17
Daisuke_Idothat's not the problem then01:17
Daisuke_Idoit's not saying there's no installation candidate, it just says it's not going to be installed01:17
hitmanWillydependency conflicts?01:17
intelikeydZen|n| looks ok.   run the   sudo apt-get install -f    and show us the output.01:18
Daisuke_Idothat's  sudo apt-get -f install01:18

Daisuke_Idothere ya go01:19
intelikeysee that's what makes it hard to help people.   i saw y'all tell him to run -f way up there ^  and the error message he posted said run -f... but did he run -f  NOooo!01:21
intelikey:)01:21
dZen|n|intelikey: I did se tha last pastebin01:21
dZen|n|intelikey: this one http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/56171/01:22
Daisuke_IdodZen|n|: yeah, but you were told to waaaay earlier (-f without a package name, that's the important bit01:22
dZen|n|ups this one http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/56173/01:22
dZen|n|let me inform you that I installed 64bit kubuntu and then I unstalled 32bit libraries01:23
intelikeyDaisuke_Ido i'm sure you already know that, if -f yelds that "not going to be installed" message there is usually either a non-ubuntu package in the way or a repo missing   "actually the same thing said two ways"    i have see backports cause that when used to install things then switched off.01:24
Lionowhy do i need a firewall in linux.? i think linux is secure enough without it too. any comments?01:24
Daisuke_Idoahh01:24
Daisuke_IdoLiono: you need a firewall?01:24
ubuntufreakdoes Kubuntu 7.10 have KDE4.0 in the torrent download01:25
LionoDaisuke_Ido no. i need to know the reason to have one in linux01:25
intelikeyLiono the thing about linux, or what linux is all about, is freedom. if you don't want to run a firewall, then don't.   if you do want to, then do.    that's what linux is for.01:25
Daisuke_Idoubuntufreak: it does not, you have to install from repos, but i'll tell you now it isn't stable yet and you're better off waiting a bit longer for 4.101:25
Daisuke_IdoLiono: 'twas a rhetorical question.  i don't run one01:26
hitmanWillyagreed on kde 4, been playing around with it for a while now01:26
ubuntufreakDaisuke_Ido: You mean KDE4.001:26
dZen|n|hello ppl, I have fixet my problem, but thx anyway!01:26
LionoDaisuke_Ido intelikey will firewall make me securer. why do i need one in linux. ?01:26
intelikeyLiono if nothing is listening on any port then a firewall adds nothing.   if you run services that listen, and you don't want the world connecting to them.  then you will want to "block" them somehow.01:26
Daisuke_Idoubuntufreak: correct01:26
dZen|n|I would like to give you a beer but I can't :d01:26
Daisuke_Idobut the kde4 line period isn't stable yet01:26
ubuntufreakDaisuke_Ido: OK01:26
dZen|n|I will wait for 4.1 kde :P01:27
Daisuke_Idoi'll wait for gnome 3 :D01:27
Lionointelikey what will happen if i dont block the world?01:27
hitmanWillyugh, gnome....01:27
siofwolvesI have my  sound up 100% but the output is <40% what i had in windows. any idea's on where i'm looking?01:27
dZen|n|Daisuke_Ido: my next distro should be gentoo01:27
intelikeyLiono then someone in #kubuntu will try to hack your box01:28
intelikeyor some other place where such types lurk.01:28
hitmanWillydZen|n|, heh, have fun...lol01:28
* nosrednaekim starts cracking away01:28
BluesKajsiofwolves, alsamixer in the terminal . check out the vol ctrls there01:28
Lionointelikey if i have all ports not listening. but iam browsing and port 80 is open. can some one hack me if i have no firewall?01:28
hitmanWillyLiono, a firewall won't really help that since the port's open anyway01:29
dZen|n|hitmanWilly: well I heard that if you wanna learn the linux inside and out you should use gentoo, I will try to install it via vmware01:29
LionohitmanWilly you mean the port 80?01:30
Daisuke_IdoLiono: you're normally a windows user, aren't you?01:30
intelikeyLiono in all honesty. if i were the type that did that sort of thing,  i would hang out in places like #ubntu (because of it's size) and watch for people like you, asking questions about that sort of thing.01:30
LionohitmanWilly but a firewall can  reject unauthorised port connection?01:30
siofwolvesBluesKaj, thanks so much :)01:30
Daisuke_Idointelikey: or people like me that advertise not using a firewall?01:30
intelikeyLiono if you have port 80 open then you must be running a server   (apache maybe) ?01:30
hitmanWillydZen|n|, oh, you'll learn...or give up...this is being typed from my gentoo box right now :)01:30
dZen|n|hitmanWilly: thats nice, then I will yell after you help some times :D01:31
Lionointelikey ill be haveing port 80 open if iam browsing too01:31
hitmanWillylol01:31
intelikeyDaisuke_Ido that too.   but less so, because that's a pretty good trap.   "come into my laire said the spider to the fly"01:31

intelikeyLiono you will ?      do i have port 80 open ?01:32
BluesKajsiofwolves, YW :)01:32
dZen|n|Liono: I can sell you arca unit firewall01:32
Lionointelikey ill be haveing port 80 open if iam browsing too?01:32
ignoramushi all.  how do i uninstall Ubuntu Studio's kernel? (2.6.22-14-rt)01:32
intelikeyLiono that's what i'm asking,  is my port 80 open ?   i'm looking at a webpage.01:33
dZen|n|Liono: port 80 = http01:33
intelikeyLiono in short.   NO.01:33
Lionointelikey i think yes01:33
Lionowhy no01:33
Lionoyou surf by port 8001:33
Lionoand it should be open01:33
BluesKajLiono, go to www.grc.com and do thestealth test there01:33
stratman4300Anyone run into a problem with X hanging at KDE logout or shutdown???01:34
hitmanWillyyes, you surf by port 80, but it's all outgoing requests01:34
dZen|n|later, going to play some et-linux :p01:34
hitmanWillyan open port generally refers to one that is accepting incoming connection requests01:35
hitmanWillybut then again, I'm not really an expert on the subject01:36
Daisuke_Idothat's it01:38
Dr_willisstratman4300,  ages ago i had an issue like that with my ati  based machine01:42
BluesKajI feel for these poor MS windows users , who are so worried about internet security , the F.U.D is rampant in their minds01:42
BluesKajFUD ,a bill gates legacy01:43
Daisuke_IdoBluesKaj: tell them they don't particularly *need* a virus scanner, spyware detector, adware detector, three firewalls, and a pentagram drawn in blood around their computer, and they refuse to believe you!01:43
BluesKajLOL ! Daisuke_ :>))01:44
intelikeyja ja ja ja01:44
intelikeybut if i browse.....    well the simple answer is "THEN DON'T BROWSE"   i mean what do you want from me....01:45
intelikeylike i have said a thousand times.  there is not one bite of data on this computer that would bother me if the whole world knew it.     'hack me'01:46
stratman4300DR_willis: what solved the issue???01:46
stratman4300DR_willis: I have an ATI based system too01:47
intelikeythere is not one password.   and not even one full name.    "hack me"01:47
BluesKajstratman4300, which ati card ?01:47
intelikey</rant> ok hitman. i'm done.01:48
stratman4300blueskaj; ati xpress 125001:48
BluesKajstratman4300, just for your info : I have the x200g and reverted to the restricted driver in system settings/advanced after trying the ati new proprietaries01:49
Dr_willisstratman4300,  i recall tellikg kdm/gdm to 'always restart the x server' - But i havent had that issue since the gutsy release01:49
mothey01:51
BluesKajstratman4300, if you installed one of the new ati proprietary drivers it must be uninstalled first in oder for the enabled default restricted driver to take over.01:51
motwhat is the difference beteween "vmsize" and  "vmrss" in the kde process table?01:51
stratman4300dr_willis: do i set that within the KDM configuration menu01:53
stratman4300BluesKaj: do the default restricted drivers support compiz???01:53
BluesKaj!compiz01:54
ubotuKubuntu is not shipping with compiz installed or enabled by default. You can still install it and have your eyecandy goodness. The instructions are at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion - further help in #compiz-fusion01:54

intelikeyLiono so use the cli if you can't find a gui for it.    groupadd groupdel useradd02:02
phobes(I don't think I ever get a console)02:02
Dr_willisstratman4300,  a system wide config file would not be in the users home dirs. :)02:03
intelikeyLiono what do you mean "where can i edite privilages" ?02:03
Dr_willisstratman4300, use -->  locate kdmrc02:03
stratman4300Dr_willis: lol....  i suppose your right.....   hehe02:03

intelikeyLiono well kde.org is the official site for that, and tldp.org is the official site for linux documentation.   so if neither of those have anything useful   you probably wont find it.05:41

Israphelby opening the deb with ark05:51
Agent_bobIsraphel have you opened dpkg*.deb with ark to see for sure ?05:52
Israpheli don't have that deb now05:52

However, the term is often used for setups using alternative but different software, such as Perl or Python instead of PHP, and Postgres instead of MySQL. For help with setting up LAMP on Ubuntu, see  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP - See also the Server CD installation process (different in Edgy+)07:04

LeeJunFanman that's odd, I've installed kubuntu on well over 80 machines and haven't seen that yet. You have it on 2 machines - first suggestion, don't bother with lotto tickets. :)16:32

slacklBluesKaj, how can i check16:37
slacklhttp://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/56227/16:37
cbrmy boot stalls for 5 seconds when initializing the kernel.. and dmesg also says exactly before setting the VT resolution there's a 9 second pause16:38
cbrthe 5sec stall is when the cdrom/dvd drivers are loaded16:38
BluesKajslackl,  use adept to check the installed pkges16:38
nosrednaekimcbr » probably detecting if there is a CD in the drive..16:39
cbrnosrednaekim: why should that stall the init process?16:39
LeeJunFanslackl: I see something that concerns me that I've never seen before in a drive descriptor: HP CD-Writer+ 9300 1.0b (/dev/hdc, ) [CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM] [Error] [SAO, TAO, RAW, SAO/R96R, RAW/R96R]16:39

slacklBluesKaj, yeah they are there16:39
LeeJunFan[Error]16:39
slacklLeeJunFan, lol yeah i saw that too16:40
LeeJunFanmaybe that's just error checking capability - but I just haven't ever seen it before. The other thing is /usr/bin/wodim: Operation not permitted. Warning: Cannot raise RLIMIT_MEMLOCK limits.16:40
cbrnosrednaekim: nope, the tray has always been empty.. it happened in debian too but some recent kernel cured it imo16:40
nosrednaekimcbr » ah... hmm, odd16:41
LeeJunFanslackl: I wonder - try ls -l /usr/bin/wodim and see what it tells you for permissions on that.16:41
cbrnosrednaekim: is there any way to see the raw output behind the kubuntu splash screen?16:41
slacklLeeJunFan, i will check16:41
nosrednaekimcbr » yeah, press e on the boot menu, erase "splash" and "quiet"16:42

slacklLeeJunFan -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 359116 2007-09-16 18:17 wodim16:42

swimmerino88I have installed my kubuntu on my laptop...when I press the buttons for the volume, the max volume that I can reach is the 11%...why?16:46
LeeJunFansome screwed up abbreviation there.16:46
slacklLeeJunFan, cdrecord has returned an unknown error (254) sometimes using TAO resolves this issues.16:46
slackli will try with TAO16:46
LeeJunFanslackl: burning audio cd's can introduce an entirely different set of problems, your best bet would be to try to get cd recording working first with data - then move on to audio.16:47
slacklLeeJunFan, ok i will try16:47
nosrednaekimswimmerino88 » that is a known bug, search launchpad for it, I think there is a fix16:48

Jontynosrednaekim: I've just realised the copy of my home folder doesn't actually include hidden files. Whoops. Thanks anyway.16:52

trembybeer -- you shouldn't have to remove the driver from there. instead you can edit your xorg.conf file to start up using a simpler driver, such as vesa. then you should be able to get x started and do any fixing without need of the livecd17:50
beertremby: ok. thanks.17:52
BluesKajbeer, tremby..there's another option most ppl don't think of . Instead of removing the graphics card driver or installing a proprietary one, take a look at the monitor driver , sometimes that's the culprit17:53
PolitikerALTdoes kubuntu hardy work fine on amd64?17:53
BluesKajnot all plugins are available for 64bit17:54
PolitikerALTis there a list which plugins are not availible?17:54
BluesKajPolitikerALT, personally I reverted to 32 bit on my amd 64 pc due to those probs17:55
PolitikerALTmom - do you mean that plugins are missing compared to 32bit or compared to 64bit gutsy? The latter wouldn't be a problem because gutsy works rather fine for me17:57

Serenand removing kickerrc without success17:57
Serenanyone got an idea ?17:58
Seren( if I right click on kicker and select "unlock panel" nothing happens )17:58
Daisuke_IdoPolitikerALT: unless you're running better than 4gb ram, 32-bit will work fine for yu17:58
Daisuke_Idoyou*17:58
PolitikerALTsure - but: why having a 64-bit CPU and a 32-bit OS?18:00
Daisuke_Idobecause 64-bit just isn't needed for 90% of home users yet18:01
BluesKajPolitikerALT, it's an unfortunate reality that 64 bit in linux generally has little advantage over 32 speedwise and support in terms of apps that can take advantage of it18:02
Daisuke_Idocpus went to 64 bit, but that doesn't mean that you have to jump straight to the new OS...  there are still issues, and while you CAN use the 64-bit OS, if you weigh the headache of getting common things working to the minimal (if any) performance increase, you'll likely find you're better off with the 32 bit version18:02
beeri'm trying to access my kubuntu hard drive while running off this live cd, i'm getting 'hal-storage-fixed-mount refused uid 999' though. how do i mount it. i believe its /dev/sda6.18:03
PolitikerALTCurrently I have no issues except not being able to hibernate - I just want to know if I should wait for upgrading my gutsy to 64-bit or not (because there was an 64-bit bug - you could not boot)18:04
jhutchinsbeer: How are you trying to mount it?18:05
Daisuke_IdoPolitikerALT: as i said.  it's a pain getting flash, java, etc etc working.  if you don't use those things or don't mind a little frustrated screaming while you're trying to get them all working properly, go ahead and upgrade.  if you would prefer to keep your sanity and your hair, stick with 32-bit18:05
jhutchinsBasically if you actually need 64b you'll know.18:06
* BluesKaj has "some" hair left 18:06
NickPrestaPolitikerALT, make a chart. Compare the benefits and the drawbacks of a 64-bit system.18:06

PolitikerNEUI'm sure I won't need more than 2 GB of ram and I know 32-bit may be better. But all I want to know is if the 64-bit bug in Hardy is fixed or not because 64-bit Gutsy works fine for me (Don't need flash; had no problems with java)18:12

scjp_ld, oracle-xe file is not there in the /etc/init.d/ directory23:30
SlimeyPetedeepfreez: you have to tell apache to execute CGI scripts in that directory.23:30
deepfreezSlimeyPete: how? i need remove the line?23:30
mefisto__joe_: looks like it's playing video on yours23:30
SlimeyPetedeepfreez: you need to put "options +execCGI" in the section of your apache2.conf (or sistes-enabled script) which refers to the directory23:31
SlimeyPetethere will be something like "<directory /var/www>...</directory>"23:31
deepfreezi put :|23:31
