If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - For playing audio files, see !Players and !MP302:38

nosrednaekimStoffer » not that I know of03:05

AndreSTCintelikey do u know whats means the Active Status shown on qparted, on 1 of the partitions?03:24
oloughlin75Arwen: does that work very very well?!?!03:24
AndreSTCqtparted*03:24
ArwenAndreSTC, active == bootable03:24
neville_What sort of a question is that03:24
Daisuke_IdoArwen: agreed, we should at most be recommending vfat :\03:24
Arwenoloughlin75, it's more properly an ext2 driver. If you crash Windows, you will want to boot Linux and fsck it.03:25
intelikeyAndreSTC probably that the fs is mounted and thus not safe to alter it.03:25
* Stoffer will format his thumb drive in PAL03:25
Arwenit also offers no filesystem security03:25
nosrednaekimPAL? lol03:25

Arwenstable? heck yeah03:25
Arwensecure? heck nop03:26

oloughlin75security isn't an isue03:26
Arwengo fer it then03:26
Daisuke_Idooloughlin75: vfat.03:26
Daisuke_Idoit's music, you won't be using >2gb files03:26
AndreSTCintelikey thats seted on my 5GB partition. so i can copy everything that is in the other partition, format it, and give more size to the active partition?03:26
Daisuke_Idoand you won't have to screw with the driver on the windows side, or the linux side03:26
ArwenDaisuke_Ido, dunno, there's a new tendency to rip albums as single files03:26
intelikeyAndreSTC boot flag = active   means that bios will try to boot that partition if the MBR is a standard M$ mbr03:26
Arwenso you don't really know03:27
Daisuke_IdoArwen: even in mp3, at the highest bitrate, that's what, a max of 280mb?03:27
Daisuke_Idoeven flac would be less than 1gb03:27
ArwenFLAC would give you a max of 700MB03:27

Arwenoloughlin75, yes.03:29
default_opArwen: but I got it off Java site.03:29

intelikeyvfat != fat32     vfat = fat{12,16,32}03:30
default_opArwen: it's marked on thier web page as rpm.bin too.  it's JRE03:30
intelikeythe exact fat is determined by disk size03:30
Arwenbut it usually creates a 32-bit FAT03:30
intelikeyor rather fs size03:30
hydrogenyou're fat.03:30
oloughlin75intelikey: its accessible in windows either way right?03:31

intelikeyand oloughlin75 yes fat is windows03:31
Arwenketo, clearly you replace "file" with the actual name of the file03:31
intelikeyor rather fat is M$03:31

oloughlin75Sounds safer to have al my media on a separate partition for either OS03:32
intelikey:)03:32
mneptokketo: why are you installing Java by hand?03:32

ubotuHi! Welcome to #kubuntu!05:29
intelikey!thanks05:29
ubotuYou're welcome! But keep in mind I'm just a bot ;-)05:29
RangdeBasanti_ahmad , ubutu is a bot. intelikey helped you by a comand05:30
RangdeBasanti_and what is /tmp for . or /var/temp  in your case ? in that script05:30
intelikeyRangdeBasanti_ that is where the script keeps it's own information on how long it's been tracking 'blah'05:31
intelikeyRangdeBasanti_ without that it doesnt know it has ever checked on 'blah' before05:32
jalbert  intelikey: is there some way to see what kind of sound hardware my computer has without consulting the motherboard manual?05:32
RangdeBasanti_oh. so isnt it good to put the temp info in a temporary file >/tmp ?05:32
RangdeBasanti_intelikey every times sys boots. it has new info. and new timer05:33
intelikeyjalbert yes    lshw -C multimedia05:33
intelikeyRangdeBasanti_ yes.  it is in a temporary file   """touch /var/tmp/${check_process}_tracking"""   that is the file   "empty file."   in /var/tmp  old timer,   in /tmp  new timer05:34
intelikeythat was the descussion about "(it will start loggin in the file from the point it left previously(continue from the last log))? i hope it wont delete the previous logs?"    but i may have misunderstood you.05:36
intelikeylet me see if i can unchoppy that for you.   i understood you to be asking for a timmer that will keep track of the down time of * even accross a reboot and save all logs in a permanant location.     if that's not what you want we need to revisit the script.05:39
intelikeyif that is what you want,  then what you have should do that.05:39
RangdeBasanti_intelikey <sartan> $check_process isn't a command. I'll bet it's kinda broked. =(05:39
RangdeBasanti_intelikey no i said reboots should not effect logs.05:40
intelikeyRangdeBasanti_ ok, well put the temp file back in /tmp    no biggy.     and no it's not borked    $check_process  will be what ever $1 is.   you supply $1 on the command line05:41

what_ifActionParsnip: is there any benefit to going 64 bit??10:35
what_ifActionParsnip: system used for gaming, internet, generic linux fun10:36
ActionParsnipwhat_if, depends what you use your system for. If you use it like mine for chatting and browsing then not really :)10:36
ActionParsnipwhat_if, im sure some people would disagree but thats my take on it10:37
rjbwhat_if: it makes a big difference if you're into scientific calculations10:37
what_ifrjb: no calculations (except kcalc, lol )10:37
rjb& the difference may be for better, or for worse, depending on your needs10:37
what_ifI'll just go 32 bit for now. I have no need for 64 and need my flash/youtube/nvidia drivers10:38
rjb'cause it might be the case that you need to use legacy software/libs that don't compile in 64bit10:38
ActionParsnipwhat_if, if you are happy with what you have, don't change it. Loads of idiots got vista despite being ok with xp and had loads of issues10:38
rjbbtw nvidia drivers work fine on my 64bit system10:39
rjb3d accel and all10:39
ActionParsnipi run 32bit for ease10:39
rjbi switched to 32 on one of my machines when i found a software package i wanted to use wouldn't run on a 64bit system10:40
rjbin spite of its authors providing a 64bit package and saying it works10:40
twosouls8264 everything works, sometimes I convert 386 packages to -32bit_x86_64 for other things to work using the emulation layer10:41
rjbtwosouls82: don't say everything, you have not tested every single software package for linux that is out there10:42
twosouls82virtually everything then10:42
twosouls82:)10:43
rjbit is not hard for software to be incompatible with 64bit mode, depending on how it's written10:43
twosouls82rjb: I assume existing packages for 64 bit architectures are QAed (?)10:44
rjband stuff that was written before there were any 64bit CPU's on the market often suffers from that10:44
rjbtwosouls82: just like the 32bit packages10:44
twosouls82so we are the reviewers10:44
rjbbugs are reported, tracked and (hopefully) get fixed10:44

trappistForgeAus: well you're not going to be rm -rf'ing people :)  and a lot of nicks on irc are a lot harder to type than any file I've named on my system, so I use it copiously on irc.  results in a few inexpensive mistakes.15:18

ForgeAusraidu you can upgrade adept itself by sudo apt-get install adept hehe15:18
