Dr_williswell one would use the passwd command to set a users password.06:26
Toydnvm got it06:26
klobsterlol06:27
Dr_willis:) you passed the test then young jedi.06:27
Toydmy konquerer was opening a lot of instances of it self06:27
matt_Help whats this channel called! And whats the passwd for this channel!06:27
Toydso i am guessing it was because i didnt have a password a06:27
Toydnd someone found that out06:27
Dr_willismatt_,  this is #debian , and the password is  BillGatesRocks06:27
Toydyou guys have any clue?06:27
Toydwhat could have happend to me06:27
Toydit was opening a zillion konqueror instances06:27
Dr_willisToyd,  we are a bit confused on what you are talking about. :)06:27
Dr_willisthat sounds like a browser popup to me.06:28
Toydyeah06:28
Toydno konquerer was opening itself over and over again06:28
Toydin a rapid speed06:28
Toydi couldnt stop them06:28
Toydso i had to log off06:28
Dr_willisthats weird.06:28
Toydi didnt have a password06:29
Toydroot password06:29
Toydso is it still werd now?06:29
stdin!root06:29
Dr_willisi dont see what the root password has to do with  any of this.06:29
* stdin kicks ubotu06:29
storbeck!info root06:29
Dr_willisby default there is no root password. you can not directly login as root.06:29
Dr_willisbot-be-lagged ?06:29
klobsterUbotu: dead?06:30
Toydso how can i secure my box better Dr_willis is setting a root password sufficient i am guessing no ...06:30
storbeck!hug ubotu06:30
Toyd??06:30
stdinthere we go :p06:30
storbeckMwahah, the hug of death ^_^06:30
Toydwhen will i be prompted for the root password?06:30
Dr_willisToyd,  the logic is that NOT having a root password - is more secure06:31
Daisuke_IdoDr_willis: i hate conexant so much.06:31
Toydjust when i install stuff or also for opening programs?06:31
Dr_willisDaisuke_Ido,  :)06:31
Daisuke_IdoDr_willis: BUT!  i was able to get him the driver that dell supplies06:31
Dr_willisToyd,  you use 'sudo' and the initial USERS password. root has no password. thus cant login directly06:31
Daisuke_Idoso with a teensy bit of luck...06:31
Dr_willisDaisuke_Ido,  and a lot of cussing. :)06:32
ToydDr_willis i have no user profiles just root?06:32
Daisuke_Idonah, we've both been very calm06:32
Toydso how do i make a user profile?06:32
Daisuke_Ido!root | Toyd06:32
Dr_willisToyd,  id be curious as to how you installed without making an initial user, the installer asked for a username, and password.06:32
stdinDaisuke_Ido: no bot06:33
Daisuke_Idoahh06:33
Daisuke_Idoanyway06:33
BanTamdo i need to have the kubuntu cd checked in my repository?06:33
Daisuke_Idothere is no root, the user you're logged in as is the primary, i'd imagine06:33
Dr_willisBanTam,  not really06:33
BanTamits getting annoying06:33
BanTamlol06:33
Dr_willisBanTam,  remove it then. Its proberly way out dated anyway06:33
Toyd[root@andLinux ~]#  !root | Toyd06:34
Toydbash: !root: event not found06:34
stdinDo not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth.. there is no root password. Then you will see that it is sudo that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo06:34
BanTami did disable it, just wanted to make sure06:34
Toydi dont get it06:34
Dr_willisToyd,  ! things are bot commands.. and the bot is broken at this time06:34
Toydi set the password but i am never prompted for it why is that?06:35
Toydhow did setting the password help me secure it?06:35
stdinthere is no root pass set by default, so nothing uses it06:35
Daisuke_Idoit didn't, it made things less secure.06:35
Toyd:/06:35
ToydDaisuke_Ido so how can i prevent a random stranger from gaining access to my box?06:36
Dr_willisToyd,  setting a root password will NOT secure things.  the installer should of created a initial user and asked for the users name and password.06:36
Toyd:/06:36
Toydit didnt06:36
stdinthen how are you logged in?06:36
Daisuke_IdoToyd: are you running any services that are visible to the outside world?06:36
Dr_willisToyd,  are you sure you installed ubuntu then.. you really did somthing odd if theres no other user.06:36
Toydi think i skipped that part06:37
Toydyes kubuntu06:37
Dr_willisYou might want to do a reinstall then. Im not even sure that part CAN be skipped.06:37
stdinyou can't skip that part, there is no option to06:37
Dr_willisunless it was some old installer/versions06:37
prince_jammyscan't he just change the password for his user?06:37
Dr_willisI recall some bug ages ago where people were entering 'root' as their initial user name.06:37
Toydit was the default setting it installed as root then06:37
Toydi never specified a name and password06:38
Toydit was on default06:38
prince_jammysToyd: type in terminal: whoami06:38
stdinwhat version did you install?06:38
Toydprince_jammys it says root06:38
prince_jammystype:: echo $UI06:38
prince_jammysecho $UID06:38
Toydecho $UID = 006:39
Toydwhat does that mean?06:39
prince_jammysinteresting06:39
storbeckJust make a new user with root permissions06:39
Toyd:/06:39
prince_jammysmeans you are indeed root :)06:39
Toydi dont want to be root its not secure06:39
prince_jammysyou could just create an admin user06:39
Toydhow do i do that06:39
storbeckuseradd06:40
Toydhow do i not run linux as root06:40
prince_jammysyou can do it from the GUI i think06:40
prince_jammysif you want to skip the command line06:40
klobsterprince_jammys: isn't he already an admin user?  wouldn't he want to make a guest?06:40
Toydcan you give me an example please prince_jammys06:40
Toydthis is confusing the hell out me :(06:40
storbeckuseradd user06:40
storbeckpasswd user06:40
Toydthanks06:40
prince_jammysyeah, he's root. but he can make an admin user, like the default user in ubuntu06:41
prince_jammyssomeone who has admin privileges but must use sudo06:41
storbecksudo su06:42
Dr_willisprince_jammys,  the bigger question is how did he even get  that system installed. :)06:42
Toydok done06:42
prince_jammysDr_willis: i don't remember how the ubuntu install goes anymore06:42
Toydi made a useraccount so how do i run kubuntu with my new useraccount and not in root?06:42
prince_jammysToyd: log out and back in as that user06:43
Toydhow do i logout from Konsole?06:43
Dr_willisprince_jammys,  Im pretty sure it dosent enable root by default, and it forces you to make an initial user. :)06:43
Dr_willisToyd,  You mean KDE?06:43
Toydyes06:43
Toydin Konsole06:43
Toydplease06:43
Dr_willislook for a lotoug button :)06:43
Toydno06:43
Dr_williskonsole is the cli terminal for kde.06:43
Toydi need to do it via commandline06:43
Dr_willisCONSOLE is the  shell on the consoles06:44
Dr_willisif you are not in X. use the logout command. :)06:44
stdin"exit", "logout" or Ctrl-D will logout from CLI06:44
* Dr_willis thinks there will be deeper issues here soon.06:44
Toydand how do i login via Konsole with the new useraccount?06:45
Dr_willisToyd,  its not konsole06:45
Toydok done nvm06:45
Dr_willisNormally KDM launches and you enter the user/password that starts up X and KDE.06:46

storbeckYou don't have to do anything.06:51
SilentDiscrackhead_25: /boot is full, or the first hard drive is full?06:51

SilentDiscrackhead_25: might wanna just clean out kernels.  kmenu > system > adept manager06:53
storbeckDon't delete all of them though >_>06:54
SilentDiscrackhead_25: do a search for 'linux-' and see what's checked.  probably a boatload of 'em in there.  pull the checked items for stuff older than the latest kernel.06:54
Toydstdin i am using kubuntu06:54

Toyds06:55
Toydi dont use andLinux06:55
crackhead_25SilentDis: what's diff between remove and purge?06:55
SilentDiscrackhead_25: purge should get rid of the .deb file from the local store... i think that's the only difference.06:56
crackhead_25so i should purge?06:56
SilentDiscrackhead_25: i'm of the mind to just remove them, leaving the .deb myself.  if everything works ok, then i just do an aptitude autoclean later ;)06:56
SilentDiscrackhead_25: always good to have a 'plan B' ;)06:57
el-gokuloSilentDis, purge removes also the the config files and so on06:58
SilentDisel-gokulo: ahhh, thank you.06:58
SilentDisel-gokulo: not much for config files for an old unused kernel though, is there?  lol06:58
Dr_willispurge removes the system config files.. NOT the user config files..  :) rember that.. heh ..06:59
Toydel-gokulo is ruining my support as i thought he did want to see a screenshot i am running Kubuntu all i want is some help but no el-gokulo decided he wanted me to look bad06:59
stdinhow did you install a root only system?07:00
Toydhow the hell should i know that07:00
stdinyou installed it, you should know07:00
el-gokulobad for you, that ypu posted your amarok scrren :P07:00
Dr_willisIf your Kubuntu system installed without creating an initial user. I think its time to reinstall.  and you may want to download the latest cd/release. Because its Not designed to do that. (there may be some bugs in the old releases that allowed it)07:00
Bossmanbetaanyone aware of a way of detaching a remote X application running via 'ssh -Y' for re-attaching later? (Just like 'screen' but for X apps) There's an old-old app called 'xmove' (last updated 1997) but it's very buggy and doesn't work. VNC and NX are whole-desktop solutions and doesn't work well when I want to run local & remote apps on a unified local desktop.07:00
ToydLiar :(07:01
Dr_willisBossmanbeta,  #debian had no idea eh? :)07:01
Toydel-gokulo that means that you hacked me07:01
SilentDisToyd: default install for <n>ubuntu is to create a user account immediately, root remains completely disabled and only accessible via sudo.  if you end up with a 'root only' system, you did something funky during install :)07:01
BossmanbetaDr_willis,  lol!!! stalker!! :)07:01
Toydand started all those konqueror screens07:01
Toydthanks for proving it07:01
Dr_willisBossmanbeta,  I saw you in #LinuxChix also!07:01
BossmanbetaDr_willis, I checked #gentoo, #centos, #debian, #archlinux ... now here................07:01

SilentDisBossmanbeta: hmm... i've spawned programs from one Xclient to another Xserver... but never actually moved them.  while logically possible... i'm not sure how to go about that either.07:03
BossmanbetaSilentDis, Yea... it's my personal holy grail.... screen is the ticket, but of course, it's just for shell-based apps07:03
SilentDisBossmanbeta: stupid question.. is there an 'xscreen' that does this?  lol07:04
Toydok nvm07:04

weedarI'm uninstalling Kubuntu on my gf's laptop as I now have my own to toy with...Is there any quick-n-easy ways to remove GRUB and just leave the vista (yuck!) boot loader?07:05
BossmanbetaSilentDis, the thing is the app dies when the ssh conneciton dies, becuase the app has no Xserver to draw to .... and nohup doesn't protect it07:05
crackhead_25use vista and repair install07:05
crackhead_25(load from rescue installation)07:05
Toydi am using andLinux i am sorry to have bothered you guys its just that i am using Kubuntu and andLinux together so i don't know why i can't ask general kubuntu questions in here and why people like stdin have to be so bureacratic07:05
Toyd:(07:05

Toydeventually07:06
kubacan anyone help me out?07:06
Toydbut some people like stdin dont get that07:06
SilentDisToyd: what was your original question?  i came late, and have missed any reposts of it.07:06
BossmanbetaSilentDis, the ghetto-workaround I came up with was just VNC, but sized-down to the borders of the singular application, but it's really a poor solution ...07:06
el-gokuloToyd, whats not worlin with kubuntu and andLinux?07:06
el-gokuloworking07:07
stdinToyd: there is no way to install a root only kubuntu install, just won't happen07:07
SilentDisBossmanbeta: yeah, that sounds kludgy.  you know... wait...07:07
crackhead_25weedar: use the ondisk recovery installation07:07
crackhead_25(go to startup options.. and do rescue.. or wahtever.. )07:07
weedarcrackhead_25: Ah, got it. I'll have to check which shortcut-key to press during boot first I guess.. F5 or F8 I suppose07:07
SilentDisBossmanbeta: iirc, the people who make WindowBlinds (i know i know, windows app) make something to allow you to use 2 computers with 1 keyboard and mouse, and drag apps between the two.  i *think* there's a linux port...  might that be sorta up the alley?07:08
BossmanbetaSilentDis, also it shows it's limitations as a solution when you want to run multiple apps off the same server... then essentially you have to either start another vnc server instance, or widen the vnc window... (ewww) ... 'ssh -Y' is the way to go......... but of course, I can't protect the app from a disconnect or have any versatility to reconnect as I would with screen07:08
weedarcrackhead_25: That should only fix the boot-loader, right? I'd hate to wipe my gf's Vista, since I value my life07:08

SilentDisDr_willis: lotta outlying areas in wisconsin, and most of the country actually, that is the only option.07:29
Dr_willisWrite your congressman! demand better internet! :P07:29
SilentDisDr_willis: if you live in a city, of course, there's dsl.  lyndon station proper has NOTHING though.07:29
BossmanbetaI'm surprised cable isn't out there... youg et cable-tv?07:29
SilentDisno cable tv for me.07:30
SilentDisbig c-band satellite dish :D07:30
Bossmanbetaah07:30
Dr_willisTheres some wireless isp's getting started up around here ive seen. :) but  they are a one man show. I think heh..07:30
Dr_willisThey could go under at any time.07:30
SilentDisi seriously considered actually starting one.  i could get the zoning without issue, just that inital startup capital that's a problem ;)07:30
Dr_willisUs poor Americans with our  not up to the rest of the world's speed. in internet connection.07:30
Daisuke_IdoSilentDis: doesn't that allow you a pretty good range of "good channels"?  or "bad channels" depending on your viewpoint?07:31
BossmanbetaDr_willis, that is so true... every South korean bus driver has 100megabit to the net in their homes... it's a shame shame on us07:31
SilentDisDaisuke_Ido: what do you mean by channels?07:31
Dr_willisBossmanbeta,  but we got running water!07:31
Daisuke_Idosatellite07:31
Daisuke_Idotv, that is07:32
BossmanbetaDr_willis, I donno about you .. but with an itnernet connection, i can BUY water..............07:32
Bossmanbeta:-)07:32
Dr_willisBossmanbeta,  and they need it - to keep their kids gold farming in WoW07:32
Bossmanbetalol...07:32
SilentDisDaisuke_Ido: ohh.  iirc, last i figured it out, with my mpeg decoder on it, i have somewhere around 3000 channels right now available.  quite a bit still free and clear.07:32
BossmanbetaI thought that was china... S korea too? figures..07:32
Daisuke_IdoSilentDis: i'm...  not talking about good reception *wink wink nudge nudge*07:32
SilentDisDaisuke_Ido: lmao.  no, most of the 'good stuff' is digital now.  tune to a sat, there's 24 analog channels, 3 of which are taken up by a digital mpeg stream, which has another 100 channels or so inside it.07:33
Daisuke_IdoBossmanbeta: while i do feel the US is woefully behind in internet access, look at the logistics of wiring S. Korea vs. the USA, both in population and sheer size.07:33
Daisuke_Idoaww07:34
stdinerm, this is all very interesting and all, but entirely offtopic07:34
SilentDisthe analog stuff is childs play to decode.  the mpeg streams are an entirely different story lol07:34
Daisuke_Idoit is, i'll stop talking now07:34
BossmanbetaDaisuke_Ido, we won the cold war.... sent men to the moon, and a probe to mars............  wiring yucka-puck mississippi shouldn't be that hard07:34
SilentDissometimes, i feel like i'm so far in the backwoods we have to pump in sunshine :P07:35
BossmanbetaSilentDis, I'm in NYC ... All I see is the tops of buildings and the exhaust from taxi cabs........ so a little country is a good thing, believe me you07:35
stdin!ot | SilentDis, Bossmanbeta we have a whole channel devoted to offtopic, please use it instead07:36
ubotuSilentDis, Bossmanbeta we have a whole channel devoted to offtopic, please use it instead: #kubuntu is the official Kubuntu support channel, for all Kubuntu-related support questions. Please use #kubuntu-offtopic for general chatter. Thanks!07:36
Daisuke_Idomy last comment on the subject: i'm not saying it can't be done, but the cost to build the infrastructure to do it is going to raise monthly costs (more than it should, knowing those greedy $&*%#s), and people won't stand for THAT, so they teeter along with substandard connectivity07:36
pacohi men07:36
SilentDisBossmanbeta: ok, here's the deal with your original problem.  the issue is the xclient is not modular, therefore proxies are the only way it is gonna happen now.  there's proposals out to modularize all of xwindows, but it ain't happening soon.07:36
pacoi have a question for you07:36
Daisuke_Idoah, a question!07:36
Daisuke_Idofire at will07:37
pacohow can I change my 64bits version of Kubunto for a 32bits version07:37
Dr_willisick. :)07:37
pacowithout delete nothing07:37
BossmanbetaSilentDis, how'd you come by that info, as far as the proposals and lack of manifestation?07:37
Dr_willisbackup all the impiorntant stuff.. reformat, restore the imporntant data.07:37
Daisuke_Idothat's the only way07:37
pacothere is no way to keep my Win Vista also07:38
SilentDisBossmanbeta: i'm gleaning it bit by bit from various proposals up at http://www.x.org/07:38
pacobeacuse i have vista and kunbuntu07:38
Dr_willispaco,  You just need tor eformat/reisntall linux07:38
Daisuke_Idooh, sure, you can keep that, just install the 32 bit version in the same place your 64 is07:38
Dr_willisthats nothing to do with vista07:38
pacoand i only want change de kubuntu archite3cture07:38
SilentDisside note to pacos question:  would going with a 64bit os install and then setting up a 32-bit userspace work?07:38
Dr_willisbackup your impornatnat linux stuff..  reinstall the 32bit. restore imporntant data07:38
BossmanbetaSilentDis, you'd think it would have manifested by now, with everyone using 'ssh -Y' over the years.... and the predominance of 'screen' ... someone would have realized that peanut butter + chocolate (screen+X) = bliss07:39
Dr_willisSilentDis,  there is the 32bit 'chroot' stuff.. but thats more for specific apps..07:39
SilentDisDr_willis: got it, thanks.07:39
pacook07:39
pacothen if07:39
SilentDispaco: did you set /home as a seperate partition by chance?07:39
pacoI dont think soy07:40
pacoso07:40
pacothen07:40
SilentDispaco: yeah, you're going the backup > reinstall > restore route then.07:40
chalcedonySilentDis: how can one tell if one has kde or gnome?07:40
pacoif I save my linux data in a external har drive07:40
pacolater can i Install kubunto 32bits whitoh crash Vista, dont?07:41
SilentDischalcedony: do you have a kmenu in the lower left corner?  or a gnome toolbar along the top?07:41
pacoI have scarey by de grub loader07:41
pacoscared sorry07:41
BossmanbetaSilentDis, for what is's worth, I posted this in: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/424/ ...my $0.0207:41
SilentDispaco: if you backup your data, then just flop in a 32-bit kubuntu cd, reformat and reinstall, you should be fine.  it'll reconfig grub without headache and vista should still be listed there.07:42
chalcedonySilentDis: ty that settles it :)07:42
chalcedonyhusband has kde07:42
SilentDischalcedony: yep yep.  there's commands and such to 'verify' it, but when you can just look, why bother?  lol07:42
chalcedonyhehe07:42
pacook tanx07:42
pacoI have never do this07:42
chalcedonySilentDis: do you know where to go to download Xchat (not xchat gnome) ?07:43
pacoand I dint know if the grub loader could be affected by de change and lost all my windows vista data07:43
SilentDischalcedony: i've never had luck with xchat.  i ended up setting up a jabber server on a POS box and just using that :P07:43
pacothanx07:43
SilentDispaco: before you go...07:43
Bossmanbetapaco, you can also try Pidgin07:43
Bossmanbetapaco, Pidgin has a nice IRC client built in07:44
chalcedonyhmm07:44
chalcedonysounds interesting07:44
SilentDispaco: you might wanna consider splitting your linux partition into 2 partitions.  one for /, one for /home, so you don't have to do this again.  reinstall of the os and loose no userdata07:44
chalcedonyBossmanbeta: can you oper with it?07:44
Bossmanbetachalcedony, I dont see why not ...07:44
BossmanbetaIt's a full blown irc client...07:44
pacook, thaths a good idea07:45
Bossmanbetajust create an "account"07:45
Bossmanbetawhich is really just the login specs for the login-script07:45
chalcedonypeople say that and then .. full except ti doesn't do /notice .. doesn't do dcc ..07:45
pacothank you07:45
BossmanbetaI think it does /dcc07:45
Bossmanbetagive it a try07:45
SilentDispaco: if you do it... i'd personally recommend about 10gb for the os install.  esp. if you wanna play with both gnome and kde.  5gb is about the minimum i've found.07:45
pacobye07:45
pacoyes07:46
Bossmanbetabut then again, I haven't been an oper in years...07:46
chalcedonyBossmanbeta: i'd have to upgrade ..  what i have goes with gaim07:46
pacoI have reserved 10 gb of free space07:46
Bossmanbeta exist sin gaim07:46
ToydBossmanbeta may i love you now07:46
Bossmanbetaexists*07:46
Bossmanbetatoyd? :)07:46
SilentDispaco: well, you could go 5gb for the os and 5gb for /home then at least07:46
BossmanbetaI guess you didn't know gaim/pidgin included an irc client? :)07:46
chalcedonythe one in gaim isn't as good07:46
pacoyes could be07:46
pacothanx07:47
pacobye men07:47

ubotupaco: Au revoir!07:47
Bossmanbetachalcedony, well I dont use it, I use Xchat... but I have used pidgin often to get to the irc, though not with oper status07:47
chalcedonybut that's just what i heard. i REALLY use XChat07:47
Bossmanbetawell I run Gnome.. so... sorry :)07:47
chalcedonyBossmanbeta: me too07:48
BossmanbetaI came here to ask my ssh question, after my fingertips bled from googling-to-no-end07:48
Dr_willisim using xchat, under windows vista at the moment. :)07:48
chalcedonyawww07:48
chalcedonyDr_willis: cool07:48
Bossmanbetaor if you want to go all bashful .... try irssi07:48
chalcedonyit was kvirc that doesn't do notice i think07:49
Bossmanbeta(that was a pun) yay07:49
chalcedonyheh07:49
chalcedonyi didn't like the way i had to change channels in irssi /ircII07:49
chalcedonyXChat is a nice step from mirc07:49
chalcedonyand more flexible07:49
SilentDisBossmanbeta: hmm... a crappy but possible workaround:  seperate x server running on remote box, vnc into that x server over and over again... big pain in the ass... is that what you were doing anyway?07:49
Dr_willisa root canal ie a nice step from mirc. :)07:49
Bossmanbetai remember in the 90s... all we had was ircII and Pheonix scripts .... funfun07:50
chalcedonyi had IRCII EPIC407:50
Dr_willisI rember IRCing on a 'green bar' printing terminal. in the 90's07:50
Dr_willisor was it the late 80's07:50
chalcedonyhehehe07:50
Dr_willis:)07:50
BossmanbetaSilentDis, yes, but not over & over... I'd size the VNC window to the single-app ... if I needed to run a 2nd.. I'd widen the VNC window (wincing and making faces all-the-way)07:50
chalcedonyi had ircII on that07:50
storbeckI remember IRCing on the abacus ^_^07:50

Y-Townchalcedony: mtr?07:53
BossmanbetaGWbasic .. yay ... 10 print hello   20 goto 1007:53
chalcedonyY-Town: let me find it for you07:53

crackhead_25hey guys, i'm upgrading feisty to gutsy here, with the adept manager, and it just hanged at preparing to configure libgl1-... what should i do???08:03
BossmanbetaSilentDis, I respectfully recommend the EEE PC.... (I bought one for the wife)... or wait 6 months for the next line of EEE PC's to come soon.08:04
Daisuke_IdoDr_willis: i feel bad for the guy i've been helping - not only is it a conexant modem, it's a broadcom wireless :\08:04
SilentDisBossmanbeta: was thinking of jogging down to the evil empire and grabbing the acer they have on sale for $500.  ditching vista and throwing kubuntu at it.08:04
Bossmanbetacrackhead_25, I've failed once during a feisty-to-gutsy upgrade... I killed the upgrade process and reran it ... nothing bad should happen -- but that was my experience08:05
klobster$500? hit up slickdeals.net, I have seen better08:05
crackhead_25Bossmanbeta: but wont it just fail again at the same spot?08:05
BossmanbetaSilentDis, the EEE PC runs a linux variant... I forget the distro name08:05

chalcedonythat too :)08:07
BossmanbetaPersonally I dont think the distro you like or run should dictate which channel you sit in..... all the debian variants are equally benefited by the technical expertise of their user base08:08
crackhead_25Bossmanbeta: how do i resume the upgrade???08:08
Bossmanbetacrackhead_25, just restart it08:08

crackhead_25SilentDis: that doesnt help. ???08:14
SilentDiscrackhead_25: it gives you a step-by-step upgrade via pictures.  easy to follow :)08:14
crackhead_25i went through all that. there was a problem. it hung at configuring a libgl1.. then i was advised to cancel it. so i did. it canceled and advised me to 'resume' it. i start adept mgr again. there are no buttons highlighted. i dont know how to resume it.08:15
Bossmanbetacrackhead_25, 'update-manager -c' doesn't work for you?08:15
SilentDiscrackhead_25: oh!  sorry, i missed that.  what Bossmanbeta said :)08:15
Bossmanbetawell i was relating my experience in my 1 failed feisty-to-Gutsy upgrade..08:15
Bossmanbetarerunning update-manager -c from CLI worked for me08:16
crackhead_25i'm running kubuntu, not ubuntu08:16
Lynourecrackhead_25: figures, being here :)08:16
BossmanbetaI didn't think 'update-manager -c' is specific to Gnome08:16
SilentDiscrackhead_25: same thing.  alt-f2 > 'update-manager -c' (sans quotes) > options > run as different user > root (your password) > run :)08:17
stdinupdate-manager is the gnome update manager...08:17
SilentDisdoh, that's what i get for having both on my box. :(08:17

Bossmanbetawell it sounded like you were locked-up at the upgrade process prior to cancelling anyway08:19
SilentDisthere's no "version upgrade" in adept manager now for you?08:19
crackhead_25yes, it was. soi cancelled. so what now? im afraid ill reboot, and it wont even boot because it's failed partially through.08:19
crackhead_25i open adept mgr, and none of the buttons get highlighted as active/possible.08:20
Bossmanbetayou running adept mgr from cmd line?08:20
SilentDissounds like it's locked and another app is using it.  what's that magic command again?08:20
stdinhow far did the upgrade go?08:20
klobsterstdin!!08:20
crackhead_25upgrade had dl'd and was preparing to install everyting.. it hanged on configuring libgl1..08:21
crackhead_25am i supposed to pid kill it, and then restart it?08:21

spiroonuxil: Well, how should I configure my system then? I have Kubuntu 7.10 and Windows Vista installed.17:23
beautifulsnowSpiroo, a boot loader points to a particular point in your disk that will boot the OS. Im thinking when you resize the partition, it is messing with that point17:24
spirooI see, but would it not be better if it search on the whole disk for boot loader wherever it is, or the boot loader search for the point.17:25

beautifulsnowmbr can load ubuntu, however since you are dual booting, mbr loads grub which in turns loads whichever OS you need at the time.17:28
beautifulsnowspiroo that could be considered a security risk, no?17:28
spirooI did not mess up, just moved data on the HDD. Grub could not handle it, thats all.17:28
