GerrySlybecause the network I am on the computers aren't always on, but when I need to access them my computer has already been on and I need to mount them manually or just smbclient which can be rather tedious00:37

uboturewati: If you're having problems with sound, first ensure ARTS is running, by going to K Menu -> System Settings -> Sound System and making sure "Enable the sound system" is checked. If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - For playing audio files, see !Players and !MP311:46
jussi01rewati: which sound card?11:46

profoX`is using w32codecs and/or libdvdcss legal in belgium/the netherlands ?12:11
mitchells00this is a completely honest question.. do you really care?12:13
mitchells00if you do.. get VLC player12:13
mitchells00it reads dvd's without codecs i'm pretty sure :P12:13
mitchells00and all regions too!12:13
mitchells00:)12:14
llutzmitchells00: so it's illegal to be used in many countries too ;)12:14
mitchells00then most cheap no brand dvd players sold in alot of shops are illegal too?12:14
llutzdon't know about hardware, software needs paying to the media-content-mafia (for css) to be legal, at least in germany12:15
mitchells00i don't know about over there, but here modchips etc are legal as long as they allow you to play games/watch movies from other regions...12:16
mitchells00aww in linux you still need libdvdcss..12:16
llutz^^ and that's illegal here as they call it copy-protection (but it IS playing-protection)12:17
llutzhere's only linDVD as a legal dvd-player12:18
mitchells00it's deemed legal because here restricting someone from viewing/playing it when there is no version in this region is seen as censorship12:19
llutz^wise12:19
mitchells00using it to pirate yes is illegal but if you legitimately bought the other region dvd then you should be able to view it12:19
llutzi don't know the situtation with regions here, but all those problems with css :(12:20
mitchells00for instance, my sister bought a few dvd's from amazon.com, because they didn't have those seasons out here yet, and she had to watch them with VLC12:20
mitchells00again it all comes down to the question, do you really think that the authorities are going to care if you, personally, use libdvdcss if it's the only method of viewing a dvd on your computer?12:22
Lynouremitchells00: even distributing it for watching your own legimately bought dvds is illegal in some countries, unfortunately. (Luckily no longer here in Finland)12:24
mitchells00Here using profanities over a landline or mobile phone is illegal...12:24

ForgeAuson the same machine? could it be a hardware issue?13:41

ForgeAusok well then I guess you should report it as a bug ?13:42

ere4siAntkin, that's a bit offtopic13:44
ForgeAusronny then whats to say?...13:45

ronny__ForgeAus: I think this bug is catastrophic (from a new Linux user's experience viewpoint) and should get much higher priority13:46
ere4siAntkin, #ubuntu-offtopic13:46
ForgeAusronny I'm not in charge of the people who develop or bugtest kubuntu, and if the bug is reported already then I guess thats their job to deal with, hopefully it will be handled for the next issue13:47
ForgeAusthat being said I do agree that its not very friendly a thing to happen13:47
Cew27hello all i need help13:48
ronny__I did hope to find someone here who takes care about the packages because it looks like Canonical does not really care and maybe the bug and its severity just did not get noticed by the developers/maintainers.13:48

ForgeAusronny in #ubuntu-dev you might have more luck13:49

dennisterdon't think so...the point is that these recovery partitions are linked to the mbr (which is now windblows-only); by installing kubuntu i overwrite mbr to dual boot with grub...restoring original mbr would restore access to recovery partition, but destroy access to kubuntu20:28

sMonkHello.22:21
=== todobg is now known as mi
Erickj92hello sMonk22:22
AntkinMonk Welcome do you have a problem?22:22
mikademusGotta say, in spite of my misgivings, I am enjoying my Kubuntu experience. It is relatively smooth sailing and quite painless. And it does look easthetically comparable to Vista. Am really looking forward to a stable KDE4.22:23
sMonkI'm having a problem playing videos. Every video player seems to be messed up and all players give me an error. For example VLC gives me: Cannot set locale22:23
Erickj92heh, not even close to vista22:23
Erickj92vista is ugly22:23
Erickj92kubuntu is sexy22:23
swattowhen will we know when KDE4 is stable?22:23
mikademusI tried the beta, but it was almost unusable, unfortunately22:24
spirooYou never know. Hopefully KDE4.1 will be more user-friendly in July this year22:24
Erickj92how can you tell which KDE you have?22:24
mikademusYeah, but what I got between the crashed was one extremely beatiful sytem22:24
AntkinMonk I use Kaffiene without any problems22:24
nosrednaekimErickj92» click "help->about kde" in any kde app22:25
spirooYou look which version you download?22:25
mikademusAnyone who knows how to install Matisse?22:25
sMonkKaffiene has a messed up display too22:25
Erickj923.522:25
nosrednaekimmikademus» its no longer buggy, but its missing alot of features22:25
Erickj92heh22:25
Erickj92i hear KDE4 is good, but doesnt let you customize things enough22:25
mikademusI tried the Kub/KDE4 alpha, and it didn't go well with my system :(22:25
sMonkso does MPlayer22:25
nosrednaekimoh... well THATS buggy :)22:26
mikademushehe, yeah, I noticed22:26
nosrednaekimErickj92» just plasma... everything else is just as configurable22:26
mikademusbut it looked extremely good22:26
sMonkyeah22:26
nosrednaekimi'm runing 4.0.1 right now  and have been for 3 months....rock olid22:26
spiroothe application menu does not look very well though :D22:26
Erickj92i love KDE. i cant stand GNOME22:26
spirooNo KDE4.0.1 is not solid/stable22:27
nosrednaekimspiroo» you can change it... there is a classicalmenu that no-one mentions for some reason22:27
mikademusBeing new to Linux, but a poweruser in other system, I could't stand Gnome, felt claustrophibic in the extreme22:27
nosrednaekimis for me.. but I have heards report it not, so i'm not telling anyone to jump on it.22:27
spiroookay, but I guess that menu does not fit into KDE4 does it not?22:27
sMonkI get: Cannot set locale  for VLC and : gnome_screensaver_control()  for MPlayer and Kaffiene is just a messed up video screen with no movie.. I get sound out of all 322:27
nosrednaekimspiroo» it does... I can send you a screen shot if you'd like22:27
mikademusBut the Mandriva was a very good distro, it detected and set up virtually all my hardware, which no other distro managed. But Gnome killed it for me22:27
uboathello22:28
spiroonosrednaekim: Just try desktop effects and you are screwed. My whole system failed.22:28
Erickj92GNOME is just to far away from anything ive seen. been on windows my whole life, and KDE is the closest ive seen to windows22:28
nosrednaekimspiroo» desktop effect are rock solid too :)22:28
BluesKajno kde on mandriva ?22:28
AntkinMonk have you taken the advise on how to set up DVD in kaffiene it is on the forum22:28
mikademusPerhaps as an option, but installed as Gnome22:28
spirooNot for me, when I changed settings, screen went black as the darkest shadow you ever seen.22:29
mikademus#-FF-FF-FF-FF?22:29
spiroov4.0.2 is out soon btw.22:29
AntkinBluesKaj I have used Mandriva for three years what do you mean no KDE?22:29
mikademusSo, anyway, anybody who knows who to install Matisse?22:30
spirooI hope some apps are coming soon. You cannot do anything for the moment in KDE4. Except those boring little games :D22:30
adz21cHi, for a while now I not been able to have a bootsplash screen (infact it gives me issues with the live cd for install) It was an on and off issue with feisty, but gutsy i can't at all. Is this a known issue? (Gutsy x64)22:30
sMonkAntkin:  This is a very new problem. I was watching videos not more than 3 days ago. I don't know what happend.. VLC player for instance started giving that error "Cannot set locale " but could still see the video, now nothing22:30
adz21cIt just crashes my system at boot up22:30
AntkinMonk have you posted on Kubuntu software forum?22:31
sMonkNot as of yet. I just thought I'd try here first22:31
AntkinMonk first choice Kubuntu forum second chice IRC22:32
spiroobtw, does somebody know what the difference is from kde v3.5.8 -> kde v3.5.922:33
sMonkOh ok.22:33
mikademusWow, a really nice suite of default apps installed with 7.10, I'm really likeing Amorak!22:33
nosrednaekimspiroo» for kubuntu, not much.22:33
nosrednaekimspiroo» mostly a better KDE PIM, but kubuntu already had it22:33
spiroookay :P22:33
nosrednaekimmikademus» amarok rocks:)22:33
mikademusI'm noticing!22:33
nosrednaekimspiroo» and i've heard alot of problems22:34
spirooI guess I have to wait then for the big changes for KDE.22:34
* regeya fires up quod libet :->22:34
spiroonosrednaekim: Like what problems?22:34
nosrednaekimspiroo» just acting buggy, high CPU ue when pluigging external drives, freezing... yeah22:35
spirooI have not noticed any bug of that kind anyway.22:35
Antkinmikademus noticing what?22:35
spirooWondering something else, the website http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com. Will those changes affect kubuntu or is kubuntu a development for itself? Ubuntu and Kubuntu seems to diff quite much. Even if most people say the only difference is desktop system.22:37
nosrednaekimspiroo» you can file wishes for kubuntu, yes22:37
nosrednaekimspiroo» and any kernel/driver stuff should be the same22:37
spiroookay, yes I posted a wish for an update on Grub. Seems many people complain regarding bootup :D22:38
spirooI know about grub2. But I think they/we should think out of the box and develop a new boot loader. Grub is old-school :P22:39
Y-TownI am getting ready to edit my menus is KDE to look and feel the way I want them to...  Is there a file I can make a copy of before starting incase I  dont like the outcome?22:41
nosrednaekimY-Town» I think you can restore it to deafults22:42
mikademusAntkin: that Amorak rocks :)22:45
mikademusAnd the music I'm playing, come to think of it22:45
mikademusThough remixes of ROb Hubbard's "Commando" soundtrack can't fail22:46
spirooAmarok ;)22:46
mikademuslol, kay, I'll get the hang of it eventually22:46
spirooyes, Amarok beats Rhytmbox, Singbird, Winamp, XMMS and every single music player in the world! :D22:47
spiroo*songbird22:47
mikademusWell, I do love my Foobar2000 for my WInXP setup22:47
mikademusHmm, since I am chatting in here, I could ask you what you think of the chances of success for my diabolic plan22:48
mikademusThe only things keeping my on Windows is Photoshop, MS Office and Visual Studio 200822:49
mikademusCan I run Photoshop CS3 and VS2008 under Linux/Wine?22:49
Y-TownI am getting ready to edit my menus in kde and was wondering if there is a file I can backup before I start incase I want to go back to the way it currently is?22:49
adz21cmikademus: photoshop i think is a possibility, as for Vs2k8 i am thinking unlikely22:50
nosrednaekimmikademus» little hint... BTW, don't try it here, but "/media" will automatically display what yu are listening too22:50
mikademusAh, that could get messy if too many do it... I immediately though about channels filled with adolescents *shudders*22:51

x89xDominic : I want to remove the backup of my xorg. The file name is xorg.conf.20080303045834. SO i typed in  rm  etc\x11\xorg.conf.2008030304583423:39
x89xits not working ?? Is tehre something wrong in that ?23:39
Dominicx89x: two things, you need to use "sudo" to get root permissions as it's a system file.  Secondly, you need forward slashes on Linux (/), not backslashes.  You probably want one in front of etc also.  So /etc/x11/xorg.conf.2008...  Lastly, backups are good and it probably doesn't take up much space :)23:40
nosrednaekimx89x» no need to remove that23:41
nosrednaekimDominic» and that was 3 things ;)23:41
Dominicthey just kept coming :)23:41

x89xnosrednaekim : I am not able to remove it !! Its giving an error saying no such file or directory !!23:44
nosrednaekimx89x» forthly... you have to start with /etc23:44
Dominicx89x: use your tab key to automatically complete what you're typing - it'll ensure the file exists and avoids mistakes23:44
x89xI typed23:45
x89xx89x@x89x-desktop:~$ sudo rm /etc/x11/xorg.conf.2008030304583423:45
x89xrm: cannot remove `/etc/x11/xorg.conf.20080303045834': No such file or directory23:45
nosrednaekimapparently it doesn't exist23:45
x89xthe files is there. and tab is not doing anything here :(23:45

nosrednaekimthats what ~ means23:52
x89xoh i though it'd be in the same path. What do i do if i dont want to wrote the whole path ?23:52
Ax-AxDominic, i just wondered why it goes "b, a, c, e, d"23:52
nosrednaekimx89x» cd there first23:52
Blshwell i installed a bcm43xx but now when i do network scans i see nothing23:53
nosrednaekim"cd /etc/X11/" then "cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.backup"23:53
DominicAx-Ax: I /think/ it's to do with the filesystem (which could then depend upon any number of factors, perhaps the order in which the files were written, or an index is maintained)23:53
nosrednaekimwell, the second command will need sudo23:53
x89xnosrednaekim : All working :-)23:54
