stonddoes anybody know what software to use to make an iso and read the files within an iso00:04
reagleBRKLNjust tried a fresh kde 4.0.2 login and I get a kbuildsycoca4 crash and then only the desktop00:06
Cortyhi00:08
JoshOvki!kde4 > reagleBRKLN00:09
reagleBRKLNubotu, JoshOvki: yes, that announcement is what prompted me to install kde 4.0.2 -- and fail unfortunately00:10
JoshOvkireagleBRKLN: see #kubuntu-kde4  for support00:11
reagleBRKLNwhile i didn't stick with kde4 in the past (panel issues) I could use it.. now get kbuildsycoca4 crash on login00:11
reagleBRKLNthanks, will try00:11
storbeckreagleBRKLN: Update your repos, delete everything relative to kde4(old version), and re-install00:12
storbeckOr KDE3, depending on what you had00:13
reagleBRKLNstorbeck: will try again i suppose00:13
yao_ziyuansome packages like Evolution i never use and they sometimes request to upgrade themselves. is it safe to remove Evolution?00:13
reagleBRKLNreally, delete all kde3?00:13
storbeckreagleBRKLN: The KDE3 in your repos00:13
storbeckyao_ziyuan: Yes.00:14
Daisuke_Idowhy in god's name should he remove all of kde3 to get kde4 working?  or am i missing something here?00:14
yao_ziyuanand how mature is kde4 now? maybe i should download kde4 packages00:14
storbeckDaisuke_ldo, the KDE 3 in his repos, not the installed KDE 3.00:14
Daisuke_Idoahhhh00:14
Daisuke_Idoi was missing something :)00:14
cheebyDragnslcr: I found it.  it was mysql-sever.  just wasn't showing up in the GUI.00:14
Daisuke_Idoyao_ziyuan: not very, wait for 4.0.3 at the earliest00:14
yao_ziyuanok00:15
* cheeby is trying to run this as would his brother (in sales)00:15
yao_ziyuani hope kde4 still has transparent taskbar00:15
reagleBRKLNstorbeck: i'm not sure what you mean by, "in the repos"? i have lines for ubuntu guts, updates, and ppa00:15
storbeckYou don't have any for KDE 3?00:15
storbeckOh, nevermind. KDE 4 isn't even in the repos yet is it.00:15
reagleBRKLNnot specifically, though once I put ppa in there, a couple KDE3 apps got updated to those versions00:16
storbeckSorry, I was going off a SuSe forum where someone had the same problem. :D00:16

reagleBRKLNoh well, remove 4.0.2 for now, maybe 4.0.3! :)00:18
Daisuke_IdoreagleBRKLN: honestly, that would be my advice, there are a couple bugs that crept into 4.0.200:18
yao_ziyuanpeople tend to adopt products with the same flavor00:18
JucatoreagleBRKLN: maybe the people in #kubuntu-kde4 know what's happening00:18
Jucatoagain yao_ziyuan, thia tis offtopic for this channel00:19
Daisuke_IdoreagleBRKLN: perhaps not remove it, but stick with kde 3 until 4.0.3 is released, then give it another shot, which is what i've been doing00:19
Jucatogood...00:19
JucatoDaisuke_Ido: or 4.1, which is due next month iirc00:19
Daisuke_Idoooh, that is good news00:19
storbeckYes, if I was a KDE fan I would for sure wait until 4.100:20
Daisuke_Idohopefully that makes it fully usable and a realistic replacement for 3.5.x00:20
Jucatodepends on how much of a KDE fan you are :P00:20
Daisuke_Idoright now it feels kinda...  pinched.00:20

prince_jammyssladigar: ok now do:: ls /media and check whether the folders are what you wanted06:47
prince_jammysthey should be listed06:48
sladigarstill have all the hdb's and an sda06:48
sladigari think the sda is my usb drive06:48
prince_jammysbut you have the new ones?06:48
sladigaryup06:48
sladigarthey are there06:48
prince_jammysok that's fine06:48
prince_jammysafter we're done, we delete the old ones06:48
sladigarkk06:48
sladigar(rmdir?)06:48
prince_jammysnow all we have to do is edit fstab, which is the file we were looking at earlier06:48
sladigarthe grep thing?06:49
prince_jammyssladigar: you use kde, right?06:49
prince_jammysyes, the grep thing06:49

prince_jammysah06:51
sladigarkk, kate is open now06:52
prince_jammyssladigar: once you have the fstab file open, you can replace /media/hda whatever with your new mount points06:52

sladigarlemme try it out07:00
prince_jammysthat way nothing gets deleted by accident07:00

sladigarmuch better07:02
prince_jammysyou're set07:02
sladigarso it would be the same steps to rename the cdrom drives?07:03
sladigarthis is just curiosity07:03
prince_jammysi'm not sure07:03
prince_jammysprobably07:03
sladigarkk07:03
prince_jammysi wouldn't mess with that, because that only gets mounted when you insert a cd07:03
sladigari didn't know, because whenever you put a disk in, it renames the drive, as long as the disk has a title07:03
sladigaryeah07:03
sladigarwhat you said07:04
sladigarlol07:04
prince_jammysbut that's how it works. fstab shows the mount points for different devices07:04
sladigarthat is so cool07:04
sladigarit's longer winded than DOS was07:04
prince_jammys:)07:04
sladigarbut same princepals07:05
sladigarawesome07:05
prince_jammyswell, you did have four07:05
prince_jammys:)07:05
sladigarthat i did07:05
sladigarlol07:05
prince_jammysthe thing about unix/linux is that you can open and read the config files (like fstab)07:05
prince_jammysthey are text files07:05
sladigaryeah, i have edited xorg.conf more times than i can count07:05
prince_jammysheh, then you know07:06
sladigarstill can't get my mouse figured out07:06
sladigaryeah07:06
prince_jammysspecial kind of mouse?07:06
sladigari have a 7 button fellowes, it loads as 9 buttons, kde and gnome only recognize 507:06
prince_jammyssladigar: google is good for that07:06
sladigari have tried xmodmap07:06
sladigaroh, trust me, google is sick of me by now07:07
sladigarlol07:07
prince_jammyssladigar: did you try google:::    ubuntu gutsy mouse_model xorg.conf07:07
sladigari have done similar things07:07
sladigari have tried looking all the way to debian07:07
sladigarfellowes told me to go back to win07:08
sladigari had to laugh07:08
prince_jammyshah07:08
prince_jammyswhy did they say that/07:08
prince_jammys?07:08
KaviHello?07:08
sladigarthey don't support non-ms programmes07:08
prince_jammys!hi07:08
ubotuHi! Welcome to #kubuntu!07:08
prince_jammyswell, if you haven't tried it, try specifically including "xorg.conf" in your search07:09
sladigarkk07:09
prince_jammysthat's how i always assemble mine :)07:09
sladigardoes it matter tha i am useing kde on this pc?07:10
KaviHey guys, I'm trying to install NetworkManager but I keep getting a error: C compiler cannot create executables.  Does anyone know why this is?  I can't seem to get it any other way because without networkmanager i don't have an internet connection.07:10
prince_jammysnot really, not for Xorg stuff07:10
sladigarkk07:10
prince_jammyssladigar: so "ubuntu" is a better bet than "kubuntu" in google07:10
vinegaroonKavi: what are you doing that makes the error?07:12
KaviI am using ./configure from the extracted networkmanager folder.07:13
storbeckKavi, do you have build-essentials?07:13
KaviI'm not sure what that is?07:13
KaviI don't think so.07:13
vinegaroonKavi: networkmanager should be there by default... are you sure you don't have it?07:13
storbeckKavi: sudo apt-get install build-essential07:13
JucatoKubuntu uses knetworkmanager (KDE GUI for networkmanager) by default07:14
storbeckIt should be on the Kubuntu CD07:14
vinegaroonknetworkmanager is just a kde front end07:14
KaviI wanted to reinstall it so I could return my settings back to factory but after restarting I realized that without an internet connection I could not install it again.07:15
sladigarprince_jammys: nada07:15
prince_jammyssladigar: what's the mouse make/model?07:15
vinegaroonKavi: so did you uninstall it?07:15
KaviI had to put the .tar.gz files on a usb stick to transfer the package over to the system.07:15
KaviYa I uninstalled it, then restarted.07:15
sladigarfellowes 5 button optical mouse 9891107:16
storbeckKavi: Did you install the build-essental?07:16
Kaviafter restarting I got stuck. so I found NetworkManager-0.6.5.tar.gz and used a usb move it over.07:16
vinegaroonKavi: do you have the kubuntu disk you used to install?07:16
KaviI can't install build-essental without an internet connection.07:16
vinegaroonKavi: because you can just get the network manager packages from that07:16
KaviYes I have the live CD.07:16
vinegaroonok07:16
storbeckKavi: It's on the CD07:17
vinegaroonKavi: put the disk in07:17
KaviOkay its in.07:17
vinegaroonKavi: and then sudo apt-get install knetworkmanager07:17
prince_jammyssladigar: tried this?: http://www.funnestra.org/ubuntu/gutsy/#enable-5button-mouse07:19
sladigarnot yet07:20
prince_jammyssladigar: looks promising07:20
KaviI get a "The following packages have unmet dependencies:"07:20
sladigarnope, my side buttons map as 8 and 907:21
vinegaroonKavi: what's the output when you run grep cdrom /etc/apt/sources.list   ?07:21
RiccoHunhi all07:22
vinegaroonhey07:22
prince_jammyssladigar: i don't know what that means, but did you try doing what it says in the link but replacing your numbers?   (don't forget to backup xorg.conf if you do)07:22
Kavivinegaroon: Nothing happens...07:22
vinegaroonKavi: ok, run sudo apt-cdrom add07:23
vinegaroonKavi: with the disk in the drive07:23
sladigaryup07:23
vinegaroonKavi: and then run sudo apt-get update07:23
sladigarall the numbers corospond with a mouse button07:23
sladigarusually, the left button is 107:23

vinegaroonis this a recent install?07:39
Kavisudo apt-get remove --purge network-manager net-tools07:39
KaviThen re-boot your system and re-install them again. Hopefully everything will have to be set up again for your networks.07:39
Kavisudo apt-get install network-manager net-tools07:39

vinegaroonyou can add the cdrom to your sources through adept manager07:44
Jucatoif and only if the live cd has the .deb files for them07:44
prince_jammysit should07:44
vinegaroonwe'll see :)07:44
Kavion what tab to I do that?07:45
vinegaroonThird-Party software07:45
Jucatothe alternate install cd 100% has that. but not sure about the live cd07:45
prince_jammyssince he needs those packages to use apt07:45
vinegaroondo you see a source that has cdrom in it?07:45
Kavion the Third-Party Software tabe I see an add CD-ROM....07:46
Jucatoprince_jammys: the Live CD has them pre-installed mostly.07:46
vinegaroontry that07:46
storbeckThe LiveCD definately had the network manager...07:46
storbeckHence the 'live' part07:46
Jucatostorbeck: yes. but I'm talking about installable packages. not programs themselves07:46
KaviI got a CD Error scanning the CD window.07:47
Jucatojucato@Suzaku:/media/cdrom0$ find . -name "*.deb" | grep net07:47

Jucatono net-tools on the gutsy live cd07:47

storbeckJucato: Why don't you just copy the .deb to your USB drive and copy it over.07:48
storbeckKavi***07:48
Jucatothat's what I was going to say07:48
Jucatohttp://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/net-tools download the net-tools .deb from here07:48
Jucato(again, the .deb package for net-tools is *not* on the live cd)07:49
Kaviwhere do I get the .deb files all I could find was NetworkManager-0.6.5.tar.gz and bz207:49
* Jucato points up ^^^07:49
Kaviokay give me a minute to transfer that from my laptop via usb stick then.07:49
Jucatofor now all you need to have installed is net-tools, and dhcp3-client07:49
Jucatoalso download dhcp3-client and dhcp3-common: http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/dhcp3-client and http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/dhcp3-common07:50
Jucato(you can download them by clicking on the i386 link at the bottom)07:51
KaviCool thanks :D07:52
Kaviokay I have moved the 3 files over to my desktop07:55
KaviWhat order should I open them?07:56
vinegaroonKavi: sudo dpkg -i path_to_file07:56
Jucatoor click on them :)07:56
Jucatoit should launch the installer in Gutsy (GDebi)07:56
vinegaroonyeah.. why not :D07:56
vinegaroonI've just never used that..07:56
JucatoI rarely use it. it's quite new to Kubuntu but Ubuntu had it for quite some time07:56
KaviI get a Broken dependencies window.07:57
Jucatoit's advantage over dpkg -i is that it automatically detects and installs missing dependencies (if they're available)07:57
JucatoKavi: what does it say?07:57
KaviIt says: Your system has broken dependencies. This application can not continue until this is fixed. To fix it run 'sudo synaptic' or 'sudo apt-get install -f' in the terminal window.07:58
Jucatohm.. right... better stick to dpkg -i now :(07:58
Jucatovinegaroon: you can take it from here :)07:58

SlimeyPetePiddy: disc images contain files which must be written to the disc. If you just drop an image file onto a data disc project in k3b (or nero) you will just burn a single file (the image). SlimeyPeteaha. There is a program in the repositories called ccd2iso10:12

SlimeyPeteI should think it'll just pick those up automatically, Piddy. You won't need them any more once it's created the ISO.10:20
PiddySlimeyPete: Ok, but won't it need like, a path to the images?10:21
SlimeyPetewell, yes if you're not currently in the same directory. In which case it'd be: ccd2iso /home/piddy/images/image.img /home/piddy/images/image.iso10:22

PiddySlimeyPete: It's an OS10:50
