tjaaltonmjg59: reverting the patch you mentioned made my backlight work again, thanks09:53
aboganiPlease guys don't forget my request pull about -rt conf files (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2008-March/002204.html). Thanks a lot! :-)10:03
AnAntI got an nVidia graphics card, and when I boot using kernel 2.6.24-12, the virtual console is blank (can only see the cursor), and Xorg doesn't work, nor does sound, I use nvidia-glx-new. So I have to use the 2.6.24-11 kernel & downgrade nvidia-glx-new in order to make my laptop work10:45
tjaaltonAnAnt: install linux-generic10:47
AnAnttjaalton: is that supposed to bring in another package ?10:49
AnAnttjaalton: both linux-image-generic & linux-restricted-modules-generic are up to date10:49
rzrasac: I am the one who is quotted on this thread : http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.acpi.devel/2772610:49
tjaaltonAnAnt: ok, so file a bug10:51
AnAntok10:59
AnAnttjaalton: btw, there is a bug I filed a year ago, and it still didnt get fixed (bug #146151)11:03

asacrzr: hi.11:05
asacthanks11:05
asacrzr: do you know about an ubnutu bug about this?11:06
AnAntso, is there something I should do (subscribe someone or put some tag) to make developers look at it ?11:07
asacrzr: maybe include the link to that thread in your mail.11:07
rzrasac: this patch is included in kernel package i think11:07
asacah ok.11:07
rzrmailed11:08
asacthx11:08
rzrbut andrew morton help to get it upstream11:09
rzrbtw, ubutunu violated debian policy when the accepted a patch upstream refused :)11:10

tjaaltonAnAnt: that bug is less than six months old11:15
AnAnttjaalton: oh, yes I meant that I filed it in 2007, sorry11:15
AnAnttjaalton: so, is there anyone looking at that bug or not ?11:25
BenCGood morning peeps11:30

BenCamitk: that rocks!11:43
BenCyay for intrepid not needing us to carry that patch around any more11:43
maks_that patch is a bugger, see discussions with hch rzr11:45
maks_and seens when does ubuntu ever care about upstream quality of a patch rzr :P11:45
BenCLen's suggestions for fixes are a good idea too11:46

AnAntBenC: regarding bug #146151 , I suspect that the problem is actually connected to apic11:56
ubotuLaunchpad bug 146151 in linux-source-2.6.24 "pcspkr module causes hangup on HP Pavilion dv6391 when system beeps" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/14615111:56
* BenC wonders why things are assigned to linux-source-2.6.2411:57
BenCthat src doesn't even exist11:57
AnAntBenC: what should it be assigned to then ?11:57
BenClinux, like it already is11:57
BenCthe linux-source-2.6.24 target is invalid11:58

BenCAnAnt: hmm...pcspkr being loaded isn't terribly uncommon...what is uncommon is that the system beep uses pcspkr instead of your built-in audio12:02
AnAntBenC: well, I don't mind that the system beep uses pcspkr, since my laptop seems to have a PC speaker somehow12:03
BenCAnAnt: It's not a matter of you minding, it's that it shouldn't by design :)12:03
AnAntBenC: the problem is that if I boot without 'noapic' this pcspkr causes a freeze when used12:04
BenCAnAnt: Ok, that sounds like a completely different issue then...can you pastebin /proc/interrupts (when booted without noacpi)?12:05
AnAntBenC: sure, I'll have to reboot though12:05
AnAntBenC: anything else ?12:06
tjaaltonBenC: I've got a new l-r-m ready with fglrx 8-3, should it need some FFE handling?12:06
tjaaltonfixes at least two bugs from the list12:07
BenCtjaalton: No, go ahead and upload12:07
tjaaltonBenC: thanks, will do12:07
BenCtjaalton: thanks12:07
BenCtjaalton: just make sure it is well tested because it will be in beta :)12:07
AnAntBenC: rebooting...12:08
tjaaltonBenC: people have tried it and confirmed that those bugs are fixed, but surely it'll have some issues still (as always) :)12:08
AnAntBenC: I booted without noapic, here's /proc/interrupts: http://pastebin.com/m7174774412:13
BenCAnAnt: nothing jumps out...I'd suggest trying some of the acpi debug stuff that can be found on the wiki12:15
AnAntBenC: what wiki ?12:16
BenCwiki.ubuntu.com of course :)12:17
AnAntacpi debug or apic debug ?12:17
AnAntBenC: acpi debug or apic debug ?12:18
BenCmight as well check both12:19
AnAntI can't find anything about apic debug12:20
BenCAnAnt: you could boot with apic=debug and pastebin that dmesg output12:23
BenCAnAnt: also (separately) you could try booting with nolapic and see if just that fixes the problem12:23
AnAntok12:25
AnAntBenC: dmesg output when booting with apic=debug : http://pastebin.com/m75254cb12:34
AnAntBenC: when I use nolapic, Xorg doesn't work (I use an nvidia-glx-new)12:34
AnAnt_BenC: sorry, laptop crashed12:39
AnAnt_BenC: I booted now with noapic to avoid that12:39
AnAnt_BenC: did I miss anything ?12:49
NthDegreedoes Ubuntu have any intention of using POSIX Filesystem Capbilities13:14
NthDegreesince it's a now mainline feature and can reduce the amount of applications needing root durastically... it only seems logical to have it set up by default13:15
NthDegreeyet:13:16
NthDegreemhare@inspire:~$ cat /boot/config-2.6.24-12-generic | grep FILE_CAPABILITIES13:16
NthDegree# CONFIG_SECURITY_FILE_CAPABILITIES is not set13:16
=== BenC changed the topic of #ubuntu-kernel to: Ubuntu kernel development discussion ONLY | Kernel Wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam | Latest kernel upload: 2.6.24-12.21 | Latest news: 2.6.24 Release in Hardy | Next meeting: Mar 11, 17:00 UTC | Kernel Team machine: http://kernel.ubuntu.com
BenCNthDegree: that's a better question for the security team13:28
NthDegreeBenC: ah.. #ubuntu-security i'm guessing right?13:28
BenCyeah13:29
NthDegreebtw if I managed to get it to compile as a module could I theoretically compile it from the Ubuntu source and load it into an Ubuntu-packaged kernel?13:29
NthDegreeas in so that I can have the nice supported Ubuntu kernel but have the extra feature still13:29
BenCsecurity caps can't be modules anymore, IIRC13:29
NthDegreeoh yeah... that's why Dazuko is having problems13:30
NthDegreeforgot about that :$13:30
NthDegreeBenC: thanks =]13:31
