leo_rockwbasy: do a python script04:08
StevenJI currently have a couple partions setup. 1ST Primary Partion is XP. 2ND Primary Partion is XP64. The next partion is an extended with 3 logical partions as root / swawp and /home directory. After installing Linux Mint (a build off kubuntu) the computer restarts but no grub was loaded. Any thoughts?04:09
basyleo_rockw: i have no experience :(04:09
leo_rockwbasy: it's a good time to start learning :-D04:09
oscarI have ran compiz fusion using ubuntu04:09
leo_rockwbasy: python is really not hard for people without programming experience04:09
oscarbut now in KDE i can't activate it04:09
basyleo_rockw: how to start?04:10
arrrghhhStevenJ, have you tried supergrub?04:10
StevenJarrrghhh, I keep reading about supergrub, but I downloaded and ran it and wasn't really to sure how it worked.04:10
arrrghhhlinux mint is trash anyways... my that's just my opinion.04:10
arrrghhhStevenJ, it will attempt to fix grub...04:11
StevenJarrrghhh, will it destroy my already functional boot.ini file on my windows partions? And/OR is there a way I can add Linux to my boot.ini on the windows machine?04:12
oscarleo rockw: i can see that i have activated indirect rendering and the composite extension04:12
leo_rockwbasy: if you go to python.org there is a documentation link on the left04:12

arrrghhhStevenJ, you HAVE TO use grub to load linux.  do you really think microshaft would want you using it's bootloader to boot linux?  at any rate, grub will let you choose all your windows installs just fine.04:12
oscarbut, when konsole said: Starting kde-window-decorator...04:13
arrrghhhat least it always has for me.  make sure they are all listed when it goes to install it over the windows bootloader.04:13
StevenJLOL, true.. But people have said that it can be done..04:13
arrrghhhStevenJ, it's possible, but grub does it for you.  at least it always has for me like i said.04:13
kgoetzStevenJ: it wont touch your boot.ini - you should be able to chainload the windows bootloader from grub04:13
leo_rockwbasy: you could get dive into python: http://www.diveintopython.org/index.html04:13
arrrghhhkeeper, any other troubleshooting ideas?  everything seems to be working, but there's simply no sound.04:13

StevenJabout*04:16
babeckOk, here's how you get Konsole to have transparency in KDE4 (for anyone that cares).  If you have already opened konsole you must kill any instance of konsole you already have running (pkill konsole in one of the ttys) then alt+f2, enter konsole --enable-transparency.04:16
=== oscar is now known as onavarrete

ForgeAuskgoetz StevenJ: fwiw, your not allowed to use ntloader to boot other os's   ???04:25
ForgeAusI'm not so sure thats true04:25
ForgeAuswhy wouldn't you be allowed?04:25
arrrghhhi'm wondering if it's the wifi here.  i need to make myself a patch cable at work tomorrow.  and ForgeAus, microshaft doesn't want you to.  it's probably doable, but they don't want you to do it so they're gonna make it very difficult.04:25
ForgeAusthe only reason i know of that ntloader can't boot linux is because it doesn't have a way to use a bootstring.... but you can use a bootsector image (like from using the dd command)04:26
ForgeAuswhat do you mean they don't want you to?04:26
ForgeAuswhat they wan't doesn't factor into it04:26
arrrghhhuhm... they don't want you to?  microsoft doesn't want you to?04:26
arrrghhhwell if they wanted you to it would be easy... that's my point.04:26
ForgeAuswho say's it isn't easy? just make a disk dump of the boot sector and refer to it in boot.ini04:27
ForgeAusand voila04:27
ForgeAusthats not so difficult is it?04:27
kgoetzyour welcome to, but i dont see why your going to bother tbh04:27
kgoetzseems like a waste of time04:27
arrrghhhyea i'm with kgoetz on this one.04:28
ForgeAuskgoetz I guess it might be... I don' t know, depends on what you need it for04:28
arrrghhhi mean grub did it all for me.  why would i want to do more work just so i can use the microsoft boot loader?04:28
ForgeAusbut I was just objecting to the whole "not allowed" thing04:28
kgoetzits not, but thats a seperate issue04:29
ForgeAusarrghhh what I don't understand is why you need 2 different boot loaders04:29
ForgeAusthey're doing the same job just for different operating systems04:30
keeper!search partition04:30
ubotuFound: partitioning, ntfs, disks, fstab, uuid, partition, gparted, ntfs-3g, home, mount-#kubuntu04:30
keeper!tell keeper about partitioning04:31
kgoetzForgeAus: you need two because one hasnt been updated since 1985 and only supports a small number of systems properly (microsofts), and one is contantly updated, and supports multiple os's04:31
arrrghhhForgeAus, i use grub.... i don't need 2 bootloaders.04:32
ForgeAuskgoetz thats not entirely true Vista too has a bootloader, but yet still no support for boot strings04:32
ForgeAusarrrghhh how do you boot windows? (or isn't windows your other operating system?)04:32
ForgeAusgenerally one chains from grub to their windows boot loader...04:33
ForgeAuswhich means you are useing 204:33
arrrghhhi don't really boot windoze but i select it from grub...04:33
ForgeAusarrrghhh fine select an os from grub as your primary boot loader but if you want to boot another operating system from there mostly you chain to the other one right?04:34
ForgeAusreally you should only need one04:34
arrrghhhmeh04:34
ForgeAus(apparently according to microsoft they put some effort into making Vista's boot loader generic)04:35
ForgeAusbut even if thats the case there will probably be nowhere to support a boot string...04:35
arrrghhhi haven't booted windows in ages, i don't even have it on my main computer anymore just this laptop for games.04:35
mika__hi all04:36

arrrghhhwell that didn't answer my question exactly but OK.  so you use firefox?04:39

arrrghhhoh flash doesn't work with 64-bit.  i heard you have to run a 32-bit browser... sorry04:40
arrrghhhi switched back to 32-bit mainly due to the flash issue.  i can't believe adobe still has not released a 64-bit version... i figured adobe would be more on top of it.04:40
mika__I see04:40
arrrghhhja... sorry.  run a 32-bit browser or go back to pure 32-bit.  i didn't notice a difference in performance at all.  until EVERYTHING is 64-bit, i don't think it really matters.04:41
arrrghhhreboot, brb.04:41
mika__ok04:41
arrrghhhstill no sound04:47
arrrghhhand why does kubuntu save all my open programs by default?  i never asked it to do that, it just does.04:47
ForgeAuswhat do you mean by "save all your open programs by default" ?04:48
ForgeAusyou mean session management?04:48
arrrghhhsure.  like i restart... which never works on this machine for some reason... and when i boot back in, it reinstates all the programs i had open when i went to restart it.04:49
ForgeAusyeah it stores your session information, normally does so because it tries to recover to the same state if you have a crash or something like that04:51
arrrghhhyea for whatever reason whenever i restart this machine it fills the progress bar and just sits there forever.  i just hold the power button until it turns off.  if i shut it down, it turns off just fine.04:51
ForgeAustry pressing the enter key instead of turning it off04:52
arrrghhhcan i turn that off?  i want a fresh new session every time.04:52
ForgeAusum not sure, there probably is a way but I can't think where its set04:52
arrrghhhit doesn't do anything.  i tried enter, ctrl-alt-del, ctrl-c, ctrl-x.  nothing.04:52
ForgeAusprobably in system-settings administration somewhere I guess04:53
arrrghhhdoes anyone know where the session management stuff is?  stupid gnome asks you.04:53
ForgeAusJucato would know if he were paying attention, he's probaly asleep or something...04:53

arrrghhhForgeAus, i found it.  oh and you did too lol04:54
ForgeAusthanx Jucato04:54
arrrghhhindeed, thank you.  now if i could only get sound working...04:55
Jucatoarrrghhh: just a word of caution, once you start with a completely blank session, some apps that you might have thought were autostarted by default might not be running anymore04:55
Jucato(kmix, katapult, etc)04:55
arrrghhhJucato, yea i ran into that problem before, i just put whatever i needed in autostart.  thanks for mentioning that tho.04:55

Ayabaraanyone running kubuntu hardy here?21:45
ArwenAyabara, me21:45
Dr_WillisI am on one machine. :)21:45
tekteenAyabara: go to #ubuntu+1 for hardy help21:46
jpatrick!hardy | Ayabara21:46
AyabaraArwen: is it working well for you? I have Ubuntu working good on my XPS M1530, and I'm thinking about installing kubuntu-desktop. I can never decide between Gnome and Kde, so it's best to have both installed :-)21:46
ubotuAyabara: Hardy Heron is the code name for the next release of Ubuntu (8.04-LTS), due April 2008 - For more info, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyHeron - CONSIDER IT TO BE PRE BETA (ALPHA) SOFTWARE - Discussion and support in #ubuntu+1, NOT #ubuntu21:46
jpatricktekteen: beat me to it.. :)21:46
tekteenlol21:46
Ayabaratekteen: ok21:46
Dr_WillisIF you have to ask... dont use it. :)21:46
ArwenAyabara, it's mostly functional. Not any more broken than Gutsy at least.21:46
Dr_WillisI always install kubutu and ubuntu desktops21:47
Ayabaragood thing I only asked if someone else use it :-)21:47
Arwenalthough the latest kernel release causes auto-reboots whenever you try to use a console framebuffer21:47
Dr_Willisthere were some major issues with hardy in the last 2 weeks or so.21:47
Dr_WillisArwen:  heh - thats a new one.. I alwyas wonder how these issues like that  happen.21:47
gxkanyone who have any ideas of why the installer crashes at 25% and the cdrom stops reading21:47
Arwenyep... and nobody can ever confirm the problems I have21:48
Arwenso..21:48
Dr_Willisi always disable the framebuffer,21:48
ArwenI always use it21:48
ArwenI use it more than I use X...21:48
Dr_WillisI use the console a lot. :) i just dont use the framebuffer console.21:48
vinny13ok i need help21:48

Ayabarado you experienced kde'ers prefer kaffeine for your video player, or is mplayer & vlc better choices?21:49
Dr_WillisAyabara:  depends on what i am watching21:49
vinny13well when i use iwconfig my wireless pops up as eth0 and it doesnt work21:49
Dr_Willislately ive been using gmplayer mainly21:49
ArwenAyabara, MPlayer. Nothing else.21:50
Arwenand not GMPlayer... oh my god worthless garbage..21:50
tekteenI like kaffiene and vlc21:50
Dr_WillisArwen:  yadda yadda.. :)21:51
kristjan_Arwen: if you higher resolution, then some manual tweaking is required https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/12991021:51
kristjan_*if you want21:51
Arwenkristjan_, that's not it21:51
tekteenI use mplayer for information and as a tool21:51
Dr_Willisi got my laptop set up where it boots geexbox for fast video player.21:51
Arwenit KERNEL PANICS when I try to load vesafb and X at the same time21:51
AyabaraArwen: it puzzles me a bit that the mplayer volume on my system is much lower than the volume of totem and vlc (with volume to max, of course). I have to set a digital gain to make it loud enough21:51
Dr_WillisI got a few videos that are using some funky codec i cant get going in ubuntu. :(21:51
ArwenDr_Willis, MPlayer with DirectShow loading will probably work21:52
vinny13any ideas?21:52
Dr_WillisAyabara:  ive noticed that issue also..  geexbox uses mplayer, and it has a much higher volume, then mplayer under ubuntu.21:52
vinny13ugh lag?21:52
tekteenAyabara: I use vlc when kaffiene is too low (volume)21:52
Dr_Willisbrb21:52
ArwenI turn my speakers up when I have volume issues...21:52
Vermuxoy, I clicked alt+F2 in the middle of version upgrade installation and I dont c that window anymore21:53
tekteenArwen: I can't I have a laptop21:53
Arwenhah21:53
* Ayabara also has a laptop21:53
Ayabaraand turning up the volume is risky business, cause suddenly another app will make a sound that is _loud_21:54
ArwenAyabara, disable that app then21:54
Arwenany app that makes noise is one that needs to die, imo21:54
Ayabaraif I adjust with mplayer as a reference I mean21:54
* tekteen adds kde4's konsole to the to die list21:55
Arwenalthough, one problem I do have with MPlayer is that it implements volume control by boosting system volume21:55
AyabaraArwen: I have, but it still annoys me that mplayer is low. I know I'm not easy to please here :-)21:55
Arwenirritating because it doesn't change it back21:55
basyhi i have installed package gimp-help-cs on my Kubuntu, how can i see this manual? plz21:55
tekteenanyone know how to disable sound in kde4's konsole?21:55
ArwenI think the option you need to turn off is "audible bell"21:55
Arwennot sure where it would be though21:55
tekteenok21:56
tekteenI can do it in kde321:56
Vermuxis it ruined?21:56
Ayabaraone more question. do you use compiz-fusion with your Ubuntu? is it as simple as turning it on? last time I had to get some custom kicker and panel stuff.21:56

aibI installed the packages but the packager didn't ship libQtDbus.so.4. rather, he linked against the one in /usr/lib (the kde4 packages are all in /usr/local/lib) and thus there is a missing symbol. the packager expected the users system to be identical23:42
