willis_matt1728,  go look for the old movies that are not legally in the public domain. :)00:03
willis_oops i mean NOW legally .. :)00:03
matt1728lol00:03
Seldaekhello, I have a problem on an Acer laptop.. any time I do standby or hibernate, it "crashes" on wakeup. i.e. it starts (the cpu fan at least) and then the screen remains blank.. any idea what can I do to avoid having to restart it every time I want to close/move it ? it's really painful to work in these conditions :/00:04
willis_Seldaek,  Hibernate/Suspend can be such a pain. Even under windows - I disable that stuff.00:04
matt1728change the close laptop setting to do nothing00:04
matt1728or set it to sleep00:05
willis_Yep./ You dont hage to have closing the lid do that stuff.. I just set mine to  enable the screen blanker.00:05
Seldaekwillis_: well.. it can, but with a laptop it's a must have for me.. and it works fine under windows (xp that is.. vista had troubles with standby but not hibernate.. go figure)00:05
Seldaekwell that's fine if you just move it around the house or have it on the power plug00:05
Seldaekbut if I put it in its case and go into the train.. it gets very hot in the case :)00:05
Seldaekif I leave it running I mean00:06
Seldaek+ it uses the battery so it's not really good..00:06
asobiwhat's a good transcoding program? i want to change m4a to mp300:07
Seldaekso is there a chance to make it work or should I just forget it and go back to winxp ? :/00:07
matt1728dont go back to xp00:07
matt1728lol00:07
willis_They use so many different terms  for hibernate and suspened and so forth  i dont even knwo what each os is refering to ..00:07
Seldaekwell without hibernation on my laptop there is no choice.. I can't use it if I can't hibernate (or standy)00:08
willis_Seldaek,  that stuff depends a lot on the kernel. then you got specific drivers that can be causing issues.00:08
matt1728hibernate is for everything00:08
matt1728windows and linux both have it00:08
matt1728linux has suspend aswell00:08
Seldaekwindows has standby/suspend also00:08
willis_you might want to try the beta release of ubuntu  and see if the newer drivers//kernel works better.00:09
Seldaekstandby just shuts it down but keeps the ram powered to be able to resume00:09
willis_or check the forums.00:09
Seldaekhibernate stores the ram on the disk and then shuts down everything for good00:09
rootHOLA00:09
matt1728oh that's what that means00:09
matt1728yea00:09
willis_for a long time some drivers like the sound card, or video cards would crash on resume.00:09
Seldaekwhich is better for longer power down periods as it doesn't use the battery at all00:09
willis_my laptop boots so fast. It dosent benifit me. :)00:09
Seldaekwell it's not about boot time.. it's restarting all my apps and so on00:10
willis_plus i got a cruddy ati video.00:10
Seldaekthat pisses me off :)00:10
willis_ive learned to NOT trust suspend/hibernate under windows.. so i dont leave apps open.00:10
willis_But you go do what you want. :)00:10
Seldaekis there a way to update to 8.04 from 7.10 without reinstalling ? (i.e. update from the network somehow)00:10

Seldaekaye.. I know:)00:12

Agent_bobi should probably point out that there is a forth group of perms  the {suid, sgid, sticky} bits.    most files and dirs are 0***    so you don't mess with the first octet     i.e     chmod 0755 blah          but the first octet is normally ignored on files you write or dirs you create.        you can look at   ls -lnhd /tmp   for an example of sticky   and   ls -hnl /usr/bin/passwd    for a suid bit.01:37

jarnOr, one of them mounts... one doesn't mount at all... hrm...03:46
maduserthe one that doesn't is it nfts03:47
maduser?03:47
jarnNo.03:47
jarnIt's ext3.03:47
jarnBoth are.03:47
maduserwhat kind of drives are they03:47
Seldaekhm how do I exit KDE/X?03:47
jarnThe one that doesn't automount but I can manually mount is a 160gb Western Digital.03:48

jarnBut how can I mount it?03:50
maduserare you sure there ext3?03:50
jarnYes.03:50
jarnI just formatted it that way.03:50
jarnUsing gparted.03:50
maduserdid you try an install an os on them?03:50
jarnThe other one, the 160gb one, has been ext3 for a long time.03:50
jarnAnd no, I did not try to install an os on them.03:50
maduserdo you have a windows computer?03:51
jarnYes.03:51
jarnI dual boot.03:51
maduserwell you could format the Seagate to NFTS then run a program to mount NFTS03:51
jarnI'd rather format it as ext3.03:51
maduserare you good with the terminal?03:51
jarnThe ext3 drivers for Windows are, from what I hear, much more stable than the ntfs drivers for Linux.03:52
* jarn shrugs.03:52
jarnI can usually do what needs to be done.03:52
madusertry formating it ext3 under winodows if you can do that03:52
jarnI don't think I can.03:52
jarnI think I'll see if it will run in Windows.03:53
jarnThen I know if it's a problem with the drive or Linux.03:53
maduseri know the ntfs will work03:53
jarnSince I just formatted it, it may be a problem with the drive - the format failing or something.03:53
maduserthen you will need a script to mount it03:53
jarnI'm going to keep it as ext3. Thanks, though. I'd rather have to manually mount it than worry about drivers that, from everything I hear, are mildly unstable.03:53
maduserI mean the one that does not apper at all03:54
jarnAh.03:54
jarnWell, I'll go see if it works in Windows.03:54

cyferactivesorry you know  do u know when u first open KOPETE. u get a choice of diffrent places to use as an IRC eg yahoo, msn pidgin, etc, etc,08:18
JucatoKopete calls them "Accounts". ok here's the thing. Kopete is what you call a "multi-protocol" program. it can do Yahoo, MSN, IRC, etc.08:19
cyferactivesorry again jucato. i've not been using IRC for my  full first hour yet08:19
Jucatoit's ok. just a few clarifications are in order08:19
Jucatoagain using the house analogy :P08:19
JucatoIRC (Internet Relay Chat) is like a neighborhood of servers. Ubuntu IRC (an IRC server) is one house in the neighborhood. Now, Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, and others are different neighborhoods. Each neighborhood have different rules, including rules on what nick you can or must use08:21
Jucatoin most cases, like Yahoo and MSN, you can't change your nickname freely. you have to use your account name as your nickname08:22
cyferactivegot ya...08:22
Jucatoin IRC, you can use any nick as long as no one else owns them and they are appropriate for the house/server (no lewd nicks)08:22
cyferactiveo.k i understand.08:23
Jucatoso it's not always possible to keep the same nick across accounts (your "chat sources"). that depends on the type of account08:23
cyferactivei must admit the initial sighning in to the diffrent accounts, are not the simplest of procedures08:24
cyferactiveBut thank you. you have clarified some fundamentle poimts...08:25
cyferactive<points>08:25
Jucatoglad I could help.08:25
Jucatome, I keep IM (Instant Messaging, the type of communication that Yahoo, MSN, AIM,etc. do) and IRC different. I use Kopete for IM, and Konversation for IRC08:26

Jucato<Jucato> Fujisan: do you even have any files on the main mp3blaster screen? did you select files first and added them to the list in the main screen? <---- You're supposed to load a list of files first or go to a directory where there are files. *THEN* Search will work11:42
Fujisanyep i have a list11:42
Fujisancuz i will see search and sometimes i get one letter through11:43
Fujisanand then it dissappears really fast11:43
Fujisanso thats why i thought its Konsole11:44
Fujisansomething with keybindings perhaps11:44
Jucato│START SEARCH Starts search mode: In this mode, the scrollbar in the main window will jump to the first song it finds starting with the characters that you enter after starting file search. Fujisanyeah i have read all that11:44
Fujisanmy version must be bugged11:44
Jucatounless you're pressing Ctrl, Alt, Shift or Win keys while typing, then it can't be keybindings11:47

kristinahi, does anybody know what's up with wengophone? I can't purchase new wengos and the forums are full of porn...15:05
Jucatokristina: um.. try their support channel/forums/mailing list15:06
clau30kristina: which site?15:07
lovrehere is the look of my current console: http://i26.tinypic.com/34tesmb.png   as you can see, there is still a border, tho ive removed everything i could. Is there any way to remove that few pixels of border? So its just a dark background.... ?15:07
kristinawengophone.com , help redirects to http://forum.wengophone.com/15:07
kristinaah, I finally found a contact mail15:07
clau30kristina: try also http://www.openwengo.org/15:08
Jucatolovre: afaik, no15:08
lovreJucato: :( that's shame.. Is there any other terminal software i can use in kubuntu, other than konsole?15:09
kristinaclau30: tnx, but wengo credits are sold only on wengophone.com right?15:10
Jucatolovre: what exactly are you looking for?15:10
Jucatolovre: btw, you can try asking in #kde for confirmation, but afaik, it's not possible to remove that last small border. you can try changing the widget Style though (from Plastik or Polyester to something else)15:11
lovreJucato: i would like to remove any border from the konsole. Maybe i could install some other terminal software that could have this feature.. And i still want it to be able to do everything konsole is doing.15:11
lovreJucato: ok, thank you for answering15:11
Jucatolovre: um.. why do you want to remove the border in the first place?15:11
Jucatohave you tried Yakuake?15:11
lovreJucato: no, what is that15:11
Jucato!info yakuake15:11
clau30kristina: sorry, don't know that..15:11
ubotuyakuake (source: yakuake): a Quake-style terminal emulator based on KDE Konsole technology. In component universe, is optional. Version 2.8-0ubuntu1 (gutsy), package size 167 kB, installed size 1048 kB15:11
kristinais there any alternative besides skype to make pc to phone calls on linux?15:12
Jucatolovre: it basically uses Konsole, but gives this "rolling down" effect, which makes it available on all virtual desktop15:12
ShishKababI can tell you: Yakuake rocks!!!!15:12
clau30it does rock, but afaik you can't remove the borders15:13
lovreJucato: can you help me clarify something. Terminal on its own is not a shell? Its just an interface to shell? Am im right, or am i mistaken?15:13
Jucatolovre: simply install it, then press F12 to see for yourself15:13
cannoncan the opera browser be used on linux?15:13
Jucatocannon: yes15:13
clau30cannon: yes15:13
clau30:)15:13
cannonheh, cool15:13
cannoni don't see it in the package manager15:13
lovreJucato: why F12? nothing happens..15:13
Jucatolovre: technically Konsole is a "terminal emulator". a "Terminal" is originally some hardware with a monitor and a keyboard. a "shell" is a program that interprets your commands and runs it the appropriate programs.15:14
Jucatothink of the "shell" as your command line equivalent of a GUI desktop15:14
Jucatolovre: is Yakuake installed?15:14
clau30lovre: for borderlessyness, look here: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/CenterShell?content=7599715:14
Jucatolovre: oops. install yakuake, run it, then press F1215:14
lovreJucato: so it doesnt matter what terminal i use, it matters what shell i use. If i change my terminal software, all commands are the same, because i use for example bash shell. Is this correct?15:15
Jucatoright.. he will have to install Eterm (Enlightenment's terminal)15:15
Jucatolovre: correct15:15
Jucatolovre: but some terminal emulators offer features that others don't15:15
Jucatocommands are the same, features might be different15:16
cannoncould somebody remind me how to refresh the k menu pls?15:16
lovreJucato: i just wanted to be sure im not loosing anything important if i change konsole to something else15:16
lovreJucato: i see. Thank you for your time, you have been very helpfull...15:16
Jucatocannon: kbuildsycoca15:16
cannonta15:16
Jucatolovre: no you won't. specially if you use Yakuake, since it basically uses an "embedded" Konsole15:17
lovreJucato: thx :D15:17
Jucatolovre: yakuake has this advantage over a borderless, always present terminal in the background: you can hide it when you don't need it and roll it down when you do. it has tabs just like a regular konsole. and it's available on all virtual desktops15:18
clau30lovre: also, it's very cool! :)15:18
Jucatoheh :)15:18
lovreJucato: when it hides, and then i restore it, its not a new session, is it?15:18
Jucatoof course not :)15:19
Jucatoit's the same session15:19
Jucatounless you manually exit that session (Ctrl+D or "exit")15:19
lovreJucato: this seems veeeeery nice!15:19
Jucatolovre: you can set it to autohide if you lose focus from Yakuake (change to another window or click on the desktop)15:20
Jucatootherwise it stays visible unless you manually toggle it to roll up15:20
lovreJucato: it seems its autohiding by default...15:22
Jucatoah ok15:22
lovre:)15:22

ShishKababHello! Could someone please help me with a package management problem?18:48

ShishKababI'm a webdeveloper and one day I woke up and suddenly libapache2-mod-php5 was deinstalled....18:49

ShishKababWhen I did that subversion was suddenly deinstalled!18:49

nosredna_ekimXMMS2 is pretty close to winamp I have heard18:58
Firebirdthere's a 2? :)18:58
ShishKababtrappist: But I'll look at Ruby sometime in the future. I hear many positive things about it18:58
trappistShishKabab: I made the leap a few years ago, and I'll never look back18:59
trappistShishKabab: this was after writing *several* php frameworks18:59

pnukeidanyone know about this ?19:03
pnukeidbut kubuntu work fine19:03
trappisticewaterman: you could just set that environment variable globally in, say, /etc/profile19:03
ShishKababtrappist: Ok... But I'll first look into Ruby.19:03
ShishKababtrappist: I was told that this is very good book http://poignantguide.net/ruby/19:04
trappistShishKabab: one of many good books, if you can handle why's style :)19:05

SilentDishello :)22:20

ScorpKingSilentDis: sudo apt-get install kdegames :P22:21

lovre i get an error "Access denied" when i try to empty trash bin. How do i empty it, with sudo or something...?22:22
SilentDisScorpKing: eh, i'm trying to use amarok to wrangle a 90gb mp3 collection.  that'll occupy me for a while lol22:22
SilentDislovre: your user trash bin?22:23
ScorpKingSilentDis: i still have to sort mine. good luck22:23
Regitalhmm... how do i know when to run something as su root and when not?22:23
SilentDislovre: sounds like *something* managed to get it's permissions changed in that folder.22:23
SilentDisRegital: always run as user.  if that doesn't work, then try as root, but only if it *should* need root.  IE, installing something for example.22:24
lovreSilentDis: maybe a file in a folder i deleted was created by root?22:24
lovreSilentDis: any idea how i delete it?22:24
SilentDisRegital: root means you know exactly what you are doing every step of the way.  if in doubt, skip it.22:24
RegitalSilentDis, gotcha. thanks22:24
SilentDislovre: check in ~/.Trash/.  that's where stuff is held.  you can safely delete stuff in there, either with rm or sudo rm or whatever :)22:25
SilentDisScorpKing: the big problem i have is with my various artists CDs... some have the artist set as 'various artist' and the title has the artist/title.  annoying :P22:26
lovreSilentDis: i dont have that folder. I have ~/.local/share/Trash22:26
cyberixCould someone who is running KDE4 run this demo http://cs.helsinki.fi/u/twruottu/notif/ and take a screen shot for me?22:26
lovreSilentDis: is that it22:26
SilentDislovre: what version are you running?22:27
ScorpKingSilentDis: there is a program for that. ide3tag i think22:27
mathewscropking my ntfs config tool wont open22:27
lovreSilentDis: gutsy22:27
SilentDislovre: 7.06, right (can never remember the code names, sorry)22:28
lovreSilentDis: no, 7.1022:28
SilentDislovre: kde or gnome?22:28
lovreSilentDis: kde22:28
ScorpKingmathew: i use the command line for everything22:28
asobitagging in amarok could use work22:29
lovreSilentDis: seems i have deleted a file i created with PHP and didnt chown it, so its user is "nobody". Perhaps that is the reason it wont delete.. Is it safe to purge that folder?22:29
SilentDislovre: i'd say ~/.local/share/Trash/files is where you need to be22:29
lovreSilentDis: what about info folder, do i delete everything from it? it contains information about files in files folder22:30
Kaevikthe disk didn't get verified22:30
Kaevikit appearently ejects the disk then  loads it up again.22:30
Kaeviknow I verified it.22:31
SilentDislovre: i'd say the items in both are safe to delete, but the folders themselves should probably remain intact, as i have no idea what wonky-ness would result from them missing, or if they'd just rebuild :)22:31
lovreSilentDis: hmm. i deleted files manually, but now, i dont get empty trash when i click my trash bin. ... something is messed up. Maybe it will fix itself after a reboot. Thank you :D22:32
SilentDislovre: if anything, just restart x (ctrl-alt-backspace).  re-logging in should take care of it22:33
lovreill try that22:33
lovrebrb22:33
lovreSilentDis: seems to be ok now. But theres another problem. The disk freeing seems to not have been reported to system somehow. When i go to dolphin it says i have same amount of free space i had before deleting trash.22:36
lovreSilentDis: there was 8Gb of trash22:37
SilentDislovre: sounds like you just need to force an update.  drop to a term and type `sudo updatedb` :)22:37
TimSlovre: what is the output from df?22:37
lovreTimS: it has not changed...22:38
SilentDislovre: either way, it'll update in a bit, the space is there :)22:38
TimSdf hasn't changed either? Interesting.22:38
lovre:s22:38
lovrewhere did it go.. i did updatedb, but nothing changed22:39

TimSYeah22:40
asobithanks22:40
lovreSilentDis: do i delete files with rem? i would like to purge it with sudo again..22:40
SilentDislovre: nothing from what i can tell... but there might be some trash sitting in roots trash, depending on what you deleted and how.22:41
TimSasobi: Its a CLI program though22:41
lovreSilentDis: sudo rem ....../Trash/*    -> is that ok?22:41

TimSasobi: It does for me22:45

TimSIt should work if you have the right codec installed22:47
