kanadianhello04:16
j1mchi kanadian04:16
kanadianhow are you04:16
j1mcfine, thx.  and you?04:18
kanadiangood04:18
kanadianim looking to get into documenting for kubuntu, where do I start? I checked out ubuntu/community and I think I want to edit the wiki but it all looks pretty good and solid04:19
j1mchmm...04:19
j1mcthere is a "categorycleanup" on the wiki... pages in need of being cleaned up04:21
j1mci'm looking for a link04:21
kanadiani found it04:21
kanadianhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/CategoryCleanup04:22
j1mc:)04:22
j1mci see 3 kubuntu-specific docs on there.  (just in searching for the word kubuntu)04:22
kanadianok thats a good start, unfortunately i have no experience with redhat or gentoo lol04:24
kanadian:)04:24
j1mcjonathan jesse is the kubuntu doc guy04:24
j1mche and nixternal04:24
kanadianyes I was actually talking to nixternal today04:24
j1mcthey could probably be of more assistance in knowing where they need help04:24
j1mcah, cool.  :)04:24
kanadianhow long have you been using linux? and what are you doing right now for doc ?04:25
kanadianif you don't mind me asking04:25
j1mci've been using ubuntu/xubuntu since spring of 2006, and i work on xubuntu docs04:25
kanadianwell thats good, i'm just deserting windows (xp and vista)04:26
kanadianinstalled pclos but just wasn't overly impressed04:26
kanadiantried about 10 diff distros and settled on kubuntu because it has the eye candy I want04:27
j1mcwe're all at a unique time in the doc-release cycle... we just had "string freeze" this week, so the official documentation is pretty much set.... but you may be able to assist with some canadian translations04:27
j1mcif you're from canada.04:27
j1mckubuntu is a good distro.  :)04:27
kanadianwell its a good guess ;)04:27
j1mc:)04:27
kanadianim just not sure what you mean about canadian translations (french?)04:28
j1mcwell, "color" vs. "colour" "favorite" vs. "favourite"04:28
j1mcstuff like that04:28
kanadianahh yes, I know what you mean now. more grammar based04:29
j1mci don't know the status of those translations...04:29
j1mchttp://ubuntu-ca.org/04:29
kanadianahh great thanks! I didn't know a canadian ubuntu site existed04:30
j1mc:)04:30
j1mcthere's a canadian irc channel, too.  #ubuntu-ca04:31
kanadianseems it's somewhat down at the moment "We're sorry, but the page you requested can not be found. The most likely cause of this is that the Ubuntu Canada web site was recently migrated to a completely new host and platform, and building it up has been started from scratch. For this reason, bookmarks and links to old content will be invalid. Additionally, the current theme is a default from Canonical, and includes many links that are not04:31
kanadianvalid in this context."04:31
j1mc:)04:31
j1mcwhat did you and nixternal talk about?04:31
kanadianwell i'm really hoping to dig into some doc editing soon04:32
kanadianahh well it actually came about as I launched Konversation while using Kubuntu 7.10 liveCD and the username came up as "ubuntu" and then a couple of people were discussing the default user name and hard coding a fix so that konversation wouldn't default to a user name like that...but alas it was because I was using a livecd04:33
j1mcah, ok04:33
j1mcyou talked with nixternal about that?04:33
kanadianyeah...not much exciting04:33
j1mcok04:33
kanadianyup but that ended with the livecd conclusion :004:34
kanadian:) *04:34
kanadianand then I stumbled on his blog about an hour ago by chance04:34
j1mcwell, we just finished up the official documentation for hardy.  or it's in the very very finishing stages.04:35
j1mcbut the wiki may need certain updates04:35
j1mcor their may be translations (particularly the KDE4 stuff?)04:35
j1mcbut nixternal or jjesse could direct you a bit better than i.04:35
j1mchave you subscribed to the ubunt-doc mailing list?04:36
kanadianok, well thats what I was thinking of working on anyways, im more interested in the migration from windows to linux aspect so the wiki may be where I should look04:36
kanadianno, but i'll do that now04:36
j1mchttps://wiki.kubuntu.org/DocumentationTeam/Mentoring04:37
j1mcjust let them know that you're interested in working on Kubuntu docs... maybe focusing on the wiki for now.  let them know if there's any particular program / software that you're interested in learning more about04:37
kanadianbookmarked, thanks m804:38
j1mcyw04:38
j1mci gotta get to bed for now, but ... good luck.04:38
j1mc:)04:38
Kamping_Kaiserj1mc, later mate ;)04:38
kanadianthanks for your help04:38
kanadianmuch appr.!04:38
j1mclater  :)04:39

ubotuNew bug: #204992 in ubuntu-doc "server guide error" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/20499207:05
sommermdke: is it cool to fix that typo?  Bug #20499218:12
ubotuLaunchpad bug 204992 in ubuntu-doc "server guide error" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/20499218:12
mdkesommer: yes19:30
sommermdke: cool thanks man19:30
j1mcmdke: per the discussion about using the new pack format: http://pastebin.ca/95306519:40
sommerwhat up jim19:47
j1mchi adam19:47
* sommer is discovering the awesomeness of aspell :)19:54
j1mchi all, i was looking to do some xubuntu wiki cleanup, and found this page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CategoryDocumentation  it got me thinking about the difference between the help.ubuntu.com/community/ and wiki.ubuntu.com . . . how would this difference playout for xubuntu?20:31
j1mcnm20:40
mdkej1mc: I think it's best to start future repositories using standard bzr formats, and leave the existing ones as is... dunno if that will sit well with a shared repository with all of them though21:15
mdkej1mc: as for the wiki, the answer is I suppose however xubuntu wants it to play out; although I would have thought the same would apply. does xubuntu have a separate wiki?21:16
mdkesommer: whoosh, that's quite a lot of changed strings!21:21
sommermdke: ya, sorry I really should have done a spell check before SF21:22
sommerhopefully there won't be any more21:22
mdkehope so... each string that changes is one that translators potentially have to re-translate21:23
sommerya, most of the spelling errors were mine, but some have been around for a while21:24
sommersince the changes didn't affect the content, hopefully it will be quick work21:25
sommerthe meaning of the content that is21:25
mdkefor new strings, probably most haven't been translated already21:25
mdkebut you can't assume it will be easy to translate a string again - it might not be the same translator doing it, and rosetta only shows suggestions for identical strings21:26
mdkeanyhow, it's good to get them out the way now21:26
mdkethe translators have a fair run21:26
sommerah, ya, I'll definitely make sure to spell check before commits21:26
mdkewould probably be useful for everyone :)21:27
sommerstrange thing is that I used set spell in vim, but it didn't catch the errors21:27
sommermaybe I did something wrong, or didn't set soemthing correctly21:27
sommeranyway, the aspell command is genius :-)21:28
mdkeah, I see why doc.ubuntu.com hasn't been building. damn21:29
sommercool21:36
mdkethat's better21:37
j1mcmdke: re: the repo... however you'd prefer to handle it is fine.  i'm obviously not a bzr expert :), but just wanted us to be aware of the options.21:39
j1mcthe xubuntu wiki is at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu21:40
j1mci didn't fully grasp the difference between the wiki (being project-focused documentation) vs. the community help pages (being community-created user-support pages)21:41
j1mcthat is clear now21:41
mdkej1mc: cool21:56
mdkej1mc: I don't know much about bzr either ;)21:57
nixternalhow goeth the master himself mdke?22:11
mdkenixternal: I'm alright thanks, how are you?22:21
mdkegot a new computer :)22:21
mdkevery happy22:22
popeymdke: what did you go for in the end23:00
