kgoetzdennister: what problem are you having?03:46
dennisterwell, i was using lisa as a stopgap until i could get samba configured properly, but only the lisa works, and i'm wondering if it's preventing the samba from working, like on the same port or...?03:47
dennisterthat's one issue :)03:47
kgoetzi dont kow enough about lisa to comment on that.03:47
kgoetzalthough if you ask your samba problem it may become apparent :) (with relevent logs)03:48
dennisterwell there aren't errors when i testparm it03:48
dennisterpc A is downstairs (beginnings of a fileserver); i'm on pc B; the modem/router isn't even listing A as a device, although it did a few days ago, and both can surf03:50
dennisterA is also a user of B that shows up when i reboot in the login screen03:50
kgoetza isa user of b?03:51
dennisterno, i made A a user of B via samba03:51
* kgoetz doesnt follow, but also doesnt use samba03:52
dennisterwhat doesn't use samba? lisa?03:53
dennisteri actually know that...i did have samba successfully running about a year ago when I was still living with my son, and he had the windows-only machine03:54
dennisterlike i said, i was only using lisa as a temporary stop-gap measure until i could get samba working...but I'm having trouble with the samba and am afraid to remove lisa 'cause it's the only thing that's working so far03:55
kgoetzi dont use samba03:55
dennisterok then...would you know why A is not showing up as a device in my modem/router software? it did a few days ago03:56
kaanokay so I'm still tryin to play a DVD03:56
kaanand i realized under disk & filesystems my dvd-drive wasn't enabled03:56
kaani tried to enable it but it crashed :S03:56
dennisterother pps r having trouble with k3b and dvd-playing today?03:57

kaanbut i dont see that one under disk & filesystems04:07
dennisterwell that's not a bad line...make sure there's a '/' before 'dev04:07
kaanyep yep i just couldn't type that here04:07
dennisterok...got it04:07
kaanso what should i do? :(04:08
dennisteruser will often meet root, especially if you have a 'uid=0'04:08
kaanim not sure about my user ID but i am the only user of the computer also the admin04:09
dennisterdo you have a 'users' group? if you don't know, you can delete the 'user' option and insert 'uid=1000' which is probably you04:09
dennisterthen you will be 100004:09
kaanokay what should i do then?04:09
kaanthis is the header04:10
kaan<file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>04:10

kaanthose are just the harddrives i think04:11
dennisterkaan: stop...we usually use pastebin to stop flooding the channel with lots of lines04:11
dennisteryes, they are04:11
kaanugh i forgot how to login to registration04:12
kaansorry :(04:12
dennisterthe 'rw' option could be giving you a problem, but i don't think so04:12
kaanmy external harddrive works with rw though04:13
dennisterkaan: yes, that's fine...i just had an issue with being told i couldn't enable my burner through disks & filesystems, tho, because there was an audio cd in the drive04:14
dennisterok, you've made a small change in your fstab, changing the 'user' to 'uid=1000' right?04:14
kaanok i'll do that04:14
kaanthats the cdrom0 line right?04:15
kaanchange the first 0 to 1000?04:15
dennisteryep04:15
dennisterno04:15
dennisterbefore you get to the first 0 at the end of the line, you have some options, separated by commas04:15
kaanyes04:16
dennisterone of thos options is 'user'04:16
kaansuid?04:16
kaanoh right04:16
kaanok04:16
dennisterdelete that, replace it with uid=1000, and make sure there are no spaces after the commas04:16
kaanit is udf,iso9660 user,atime..... should i delete the whole iso9660 user? or just user?04:17
dennisterjust 'user'04:17
kaanok done/modified04:17
kaanshould i try changing the mount point now?04:18
dennisteradd 'uid=1000' before one of the commas...no, don't change mount point04:18
kaanokay i deleted user and changed it to uid=1000... for the mount point: When I browsed it automatically changed itself to /proc :S and i cant even find media as a type or folder04:19
dennistermedia will always be under the root / directory04:21

gejudoes anyone know how to get headphones working? (i get no sound coming out of them)04:22

dennisterdon't worry about /proc:S for now04:22
kaanwhat do you mean by file dennister? go to file?04:23
dennisterkaan: what i want you to do now is close the fstab file, saving it's changes, and reboot...the fstab is so important for booting any tiny change should be tested...your problem could be solved04:24
dennisterkaan: sorry...mean 'session'04:24
=== nicholas_ is now known as Strangelet
StrangeletIs there a KDE port for the GIMP? It's different look PEEVES me!04:24
kaanokay i modified fstab and saved it... so go to session and open up another konsole window... what do you mean by session sorry im new04:25
dennisterkaan: never mind, if u've saved fstab and closed it, just type in "ls /" without quotes04:26
dennisterdo you see 'media' in the list?04:26
kaanok now there is media, cdrom, etc, and other folders04:26
kaanyep04:26
kaancd media04:26
dennisterk, good04:26
kaanops :)04:26
dennisteryes, you can go "ls /media", and see all sorts of folders within media04:28
dennisterbut right now i'd like you to "sudo nano /etc/group' and look carefully at the format of those lines04:28
kaanhmmm there is a media folder under etc folder as well as root04:28
dennisterkaan: all the folders for your mounted disks will be under root's media, not etc's media04:29
kaanokay format is root:x:0 and such04:29
dennistergood, do u see a line with 'users'?04:29

dennisteroh, why my modem/router can't list pc B as a device, even though it did a few days agao and B can still surf04:37
dennisterkaan: yes, but on your 'users' line, you want to add your 'name,root'04:37
gejuim not sure i follow04:37
kaanokay on users i have users:x:10004:38
kaanso i should add my name such as users:x:100,kaan04:38
kaan?04:38
dennisteryes, and after 'kaan'...',root'04:38
dennisterso it becomes: users;x:100,kaan,root04:39
dennisterand nooooo spaces after commas04:39
kaanok04:39
dennistergeju: never mind my issue now, thx...i just wanna finish with kaan here04:39
kaanok04:39
kaansaved04:39
dennisterkaan: an: now, if you ever edit your fstab again, you can use 'gid=100' as an option, like 'uid=1000'04:40
kaanhm ok04:40
dennisterand know that both root and yourself, the main user, will be able to mount a drive04:40
kaannice04:40
kaanshould i restart?04:41
dennisteror you could use 'users' as an option the way you did have 'user', and achieve the same thing04:41
dennisterkaan: yes, reboot now, and your problem could be solved04:41
kaanok i'll be right back pls don't go anywhere :)04:41
dennisterdon't count on it, but maybe :)04:41
kaani hope the system wont crash....04:42
dennisterk, will do04:42
kaansince we changed important files :(04:42
kaanokay brb04:42
dennisterwe only made very minor changes, should be fine04:42
dennisterbrb in 5...need a cig04:42
infurnus__any idea on how to hide backup files? e.g. foo~04:43
kaandennister im back04:44
maduserinfurnus put a . in front of the file04:45
kaandisk & file systems is back to normal04:45
kaanmount point again says /media/floppy0 for the Burner DVD_RW ND-3550A04:46
dennisterkaan: lol...shouldn't be showing that04:47
dennisterok, stay in disks & filesystems04:47
kaanhaha i dunno why it loves the floppy so much04:47
kaanbut when i modify04:48
kaanhow do i set it up?04:48
dennisternow. modify04:48
kaanwhat should i put for the mount point:04:48
dennisterchange the dev with the pulldown menu to /media/cdrom004:48
dennisteroops04:48
dennister media/cdrom0 is the mount point04:49
kaanhm it said /media/cdrom0 is already in use by another entry? Continue?04:50
dennisterbut above that, change the dev to dev/ whatever is the correct one04:50
dennistertake a look and find out what is using it04:50
kaanthere is system under the DVD04:50
kaanthen there are 4 harddrives, 1 external and 1 for windows 2 for linux (including swap)04:51
dennisteris your dvd drive an external one?04:51
kaanno04:51
dennisterok, think i know what's happening04:51
dennistermodify the burner again04:52
kaanand under any of those i dont see /media/cdrom0  so i dunno why it said its being used04:52
kaanok04:52
kaanmy modify type is automatic right now :S what should i choose?04:52
dennisterright at the very top, where it says type...change that to /dev/sdc004:52
kaanoh ok04:53
dennisterdangit...sorry04:53
kaanthere is no such thing however there is iso9660-CD-rom and bdev and couple more dev's04:54
dennisterkeep type at automatic...04:54
kaanlol ok04:54
kaanjust change mount point to /media/cdrom0 ? and hit continue this time?04:54
dennisterunder the mount point, which sould be media/cdrom0, click the circle 'by name04:54
dennisterand inside the bar, type in /dev/sdc004:55
kaanthe mountpoint /dev/sdc0 does not exist. You will not be able to enable it until it is created.\ Should I create the mountpoint?04:56
kaanThis is the error i got04:56
dennisteryes, creat it04:57
kaanoh one sec04:57
dennisterwait04:58
kaando u want me to change the mount point or the name? which kubuntu are you using?04:58
kaanor i mean linux04:58
dennisteri had to look ^^^^^04:58
kaanlol ok04:58
dennisteryou said earlier your burner is under scd0, right?04:58
kaandid i? :) i dont think i said that04:59
kaanhowever when i wanted to change the mount point to cdrom0  it said its already under use04:59
dennister^^^dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso966004:59
dennisterso that means, beside the name, you should be typing in /dev/scd005:00
dennisterdisks & filesystems should be matching your fstab05:00
kaanohhhhh gotcha05:01
kaanname or mount point?05:01
dennistername05:01
kaanok changed the name05:01
kaanwhat about type and mount point05:01
kaantype is automatic right now and mount point is /media/floppy005:02
dennistermount point should still be /media/cdrom005:02
kaanok05:02
kaanok im hitting ok... everything is set?05:02
dennisteralmost...what other options are under name05:02
dennisteri'd put an x in 'enable at startup' and 'writeable'05:03
kaanthere is mount point then there is device and under device... u choose by name, by UUID or by label... then there is enable at start up and writable05:03
dennisterput x's in the boxes...not radio circles05:03
kaansomeone told me before though its bad to try enabling the DVD-roms if there is no actual DVDs in05:04
kaanok05:04
dennisterthat other person was probably right, actually05:04
kaanyea so i think i should keep enable at start up unchecked05:04
kaanokay so everything seems fine05:04
kaancross fingers :)05:04
dennisterin 'mount permission' make sure05:04
dennisterthat root user is not the only person who can enable/disable05:05
kaancurrently it is one user at a time may enable/disable05:05
dennisterthen you should be able to hit ok05:05
kaanallrite05:05
dennisterthat should be fine05:05
kaansame question05:05
kaanalready in use cdrom005:05
kaancontinue?05:05
dennisterk...can you see any other device that's using cdrom0 in the mount point?05:06
kaanno05:06
kaan:(05:06
kaanmaybe i should just say continue?05:06
dennistertry it05:07
ErtainHello everyone.  My network isn't starting up after booting.  My "networking" service is marked as starting up on boot in System Settings.05:07
kaanoh it says it doesnt exist. Should I create the mountpoint..... yes?05:07
dennisteryes05:07
kaanallrite05:07

kaanim gonna try playing this DVD again05:08
ErtainI mean my network service.05:08
dennisterand you can delete the other /media/sdc0 or what ever you created earlier05:08
ErtainIf I restart my networking service it'll connect (/etc/init.d/networking restart).05:08
kaanfrom fstab?05:08
kaanoh wow dennister.... this is really interesting05:09
kaanI got this error:05:09
kaanThe source can't be read.05:10
kaanMaybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (Error reading NAV packet.)05:10
kgoetzErtain: which doesnt answer my question at all...05:10
dennisterkaan: not from fstab...remember when i told you the wrong dev earlier? b4 i corrected myself?05:10
dennisterin terminal, type in 'ls /media05:11
maduseryou could do it here so we could see05:11
kaanoh i dont think i ever created that05:11
madusereg /cmd ls /media05:11
dennisterok then...i'm glad you find it interesting :)05:11
kaanok i think i need the enough rights to play because the first FBI warning and ATTENTION things show up05:12
madusercdrom05:12

kaan:D05:12
kaanok now its enabled i'll try again05:12
dennisterhave u tried sticking the dvd in to see if a popup comes up? asking you what you want to do with it?05:13
dennisteroh, now it's finally enabled?05:13
kaanyea what program u want to use to open up the media thing pops up05:13
kaanyep it is05:13
kaanit wasn't before.... it was crashing05:14
dennisterwonderful :)05:14
kaani know we rock05:14
kaanlol05:14
dennisternot crashing now, eh? try playing it with caffeine05:14
dennisteroops...showing my addiction :)05:14
kaanokay yea the same not enough rights error popped up05:15
dennisterwell now you know a bit about the relationship between users, groups, fstab, disks & filesystems05:15
kaanyes05:15
dennisternot a problem...we are making progress05:15
kaani really appreciate the help05:15
dennistermodify the burner again in d&f05:15
kaanok05:15
kaani feel i need those rights somehow...05:16
kaancause it seems like its going to play it05:16
dennistergood if it plays05:16
kaanno though i get that error saying i dont have the rights to play this DVD05:17
dennisteractually, i thought the permissions could be set in D&F's 'advanced' but not so...modifying the burner won't help05:17
dennisteropen up konqueror05:17
kaanok05:17
kaanopened05:18
dennistergo to /media/cdrom0, and left-click the folder, choose 'properties'05:19
dennisterfirst tab is 'general' open 'permissions' tab and tell me what you see05:20
kaanaccess permissions: owner, group, others: can view content05:20
dennisterwho's the owner?05:21
kaanownership: kaan, group: 429496729505:21
dennistergroup is what?!?!?!?05:21

kaanok05:26
kaanlooking05:26
kaanwhat does the nano command do by the way?05:26
kgoetzchinamann: sshd_config. on the server05:26
dennisterkaan: you want to add your name to cdrom line, audio line, video line...05:27
kgoetzKaevik: its a basic text editor05:27
chinamanni changed them both already, no change..05:27
JapaneseStudenthello everyone05:27
kgoetzchinamann: restarted the serverice?05:27

kaanok everything seems okay here dennister05:30
JapaneseStudenthmm well I don't know if that is what the package would be be called05:30

kaanok05:34
kaanlets go05:34
kaan:)05:34
dennistertype in: sudo chown kaan:kaan /media/cdrom005:34
chinamannkgoetz: what means AuthorizedKeysFile ??05:34
dennisterchown means change ownership :)05:34
kaanok it changed it to readonly file system05:34
dennisternot to worry just yet05:35
kgoetzchinamann: check the man page. its a list of hosts that are allowed keybased authentication05:35
dennisterbefore the colon was the device owner, right after it was the group owner05:35
chinamannkgoetz do i need RhostsRSAAuthetication?05:35
dennisternow, type in: sudo chmod a+rwx /media/cdrom005:35
kgoetzchinamann: check the man page05:36
kaanoh i don't think these are working05:36
dennisterwith 'chmod' being used to change permissions05:36
kaanlast 2 commands05:36
kgoetzdennister: you shouldnt arbitarily change system directories permissions05:36
kaanchown: changing ownership of `/media/cdrom0': Read-only file system05:36

* kgoetz isnt running kubuntu, so has to guess at times05:42
kaanokay how can i login again to pastebin :)05:43
stdinyou don't need to login, just paste there and click send05:43
Dr_willislrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-03-21 17:37 /dev/dvd -> hdc05:43
Dr_willislrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-03-21 17:37 /dev/dvdrw -> hdc05:43
kgoetz!pastebin05:43
ubotupastebin is a service to post large texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (be sure to give the URL of your paste - see also the #kubuntu channel topic)05:43
kaanoh gotcha05:44
kgoetzDr_willis: hdc? not running a newer ubuntu?05:44
Dr_willisare mine. :) looks like they are  links to hdc - which is --> brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 22, 0 2008-03-21 17:37 /dev/hdc05:44
Dr_williskgoetz,  i got some machines that set them to hd## and some use sd##05:44
kgoetzDr_willis: funky05:44
kaanok pasted05:44
kgoetzlink?05:45
Dr_williskgoetz,  actually THIS box is running sidux at the moment. :) but i do have some ubuntu box's that dont use sd#05:45
stdinkaan: then you post the url here05:45
kaanhttp://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/60696/05:45
slougihey all, is there some way to tell the packaging system "I have this package, and will take care of updating it in the future"? Similar to emerge inject in gentoo05:45
kaannice way of solving flooding :)05:45
kgoetzkaan: so run the same command on /dev/scd0?05:45
kgoetzslougi: look at apt pinning05:46
slougikgoetz: right, thanks05:46
kgoetzslougi: np05:46
dennisterahhhhh all the real experts are showing their faces now :)05:46
dennisterstdin is another soul i wished was in here earlier, heheheh05:47
kgoetzi think its experts wake up time05:47
kaanhttp://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/60698/05:47
stdinit's still too early for me05:47
slougikgoetz: hmm that isn't quite what i was looking for...05:47
dennisteryes, it seems that way...i, unfortunately, sometimes give others a bum steer when i try....going out for a cig, then i need some networking assistance ppl....brb05:47
kgoetzkaan: if you run `groups` what do you get?05:48
gejuwell if all the experts are up...does anyone know how to get headphones working (i get no sound out of them)05:48
kaanrun it from the run command?05:48
kaanoh termina05:48
kgoetzfrom konsole05:48
kaanthis: kaan adm dialout cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev scanner lpadmin admin netdev powerdev05:48
slougigeju: have you tried playing with all the mixer levels in alsamixer? alsa is a bit wonky that way05:48
kaani'll use pastebin if it is actually too long is that ok kgoetz?05:49
kgoetzkaan: a few lines is ok, more then 3or 4 people get grouchy05:49
kaanok05:49
kgoetzkaan: have you just added yourself to cdrom, or were you in it before?05:50
kaani just created the cdrom actually i think :S05:50
kgoetzits a system group, so you better not have05:50
kgoetzkaan: if you just got added to cdrom, you'll have to logout before you can access that device05:51
kaanokay then i guess i just added mysel05:51
re-alignIs there a program for configuring Apache2 and (if needed) PHP using a GUI? Or am I stuck with editing text files?05:51
kaanoh05:51
kaanok i'll logout05:51
kaani'll be right back kgoetz05:51
kgoetzok05:51
kgoetzre-align: ebox perhaps, but files are always best05:52
re-alignDon't need anything fancy, just setting one up for localhost use. Can't find a decent free webhost for my GalaxyTool, so I'll host one locally.05:53
dennisterand now jucato...like i said, all the experts are night-owls05:54
kgoetzif your setting up one site i'd suggest using a text editor05:54
kaanok im back05:54

Dr_willisdennister,  what issue?05:55
kaanbut the DVD playback just stops05:55
dennisterseveral i'm afraid05:56
kaanafter showing the FBI warning and ATTENTION screens05:56
dennisterstory briefly: building a fileserver, started out with lisa, its working, then installed samba05:56
Dr_willis:)05:56
kgoetzkaan: i suspect its not permissions but software problem (which i cant help with, becausei dont use whatever your using to play it)05:56
Dr_williskaan,  what player you using?05:56
Dr_willisyou did install the dcss crud?05:56
kaankaffeine05:56
Dr_willis!dvd05:56
ubotuFor playing DVD, see http://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/video.html - "libdvdcss2" can be found at !Medibuntu or (for Feisty and earlier) http://wiki.ubuntu.com/SeveasPackages - Try k9copy (available in !Universe) for backing up DVDs05:56
dennistersamba is not working, even tho it testparms ok on both machines05:56
Dr_willisrun the player from the terminal, see if it says you need dvdcss.05:57
chinamannkgoetz: i made a debug file. Pls check out and advise .http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/60699/05:57
Dr_willisdennister,  starting with the basics.. You did INSTALL the samba package?05:57
dennisteryes, following this howto: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ComprehensiveSambaGuide?highlight=%28samba%2905:57
Dr_willisdennister,  you did give your users a samba password with 'sudo smbpasswd -a USERNAME' ?05:58
dennistereven added the fileserver (camus) to this machine as a user...yes05:58
kaanokay yea this is the error i get05:58
kaanThe source can't be read.05:58
kaanMaybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (Error reading NAV packet.)05:58
kaanops a little too long im sorry05:58
chinamannanybody a idea where to search for loggin in ?05:59
Dr_willisHmm.. that howto is doing a lot of theings ive never had to do. :)05:59
dennisterproblem: now my modem/router doesn't even recognize camus as a separate device, altho it did, and i can change the nat stuff on camus05:59
dennisteri have camus temporarily as allowing all applications (dmz mode) in the router/software06:00
dennisterbut like i said, camus does *not* show up as a separate computer, unlike this pc, ondaatje06:01
Dr_willisdennister,   lets clarify your whole setup You have a home lan? or are trying to get to a samba share across the internet?06:01
dennisterhome lan06:01
kgoetzchinamann: it cant find the file it wants - debug1: Trying private key: /home/markus/.ssh/id_rsa06:01
Dr_willishow i set up my home lan.... :)06:01
Dr_willisapt-get install samba (done )06:01
Dr_willisgive each user a smb password. (sudo smbpasswd -a username)06:02
dennisterdone06:02
Dr_willisedit the /etc/samba/smb.conf - to enable the shares....06:02
Dr_willisThats about it...06:02
dennisterdone...all testparms well06:02
Dr_willistakes me all of 2 min. :)06:02
chinamannkgoetz: that's all i got ..06:02
Dr_willisdoes the local machine see the local shares then?06:02
chinamannwhat do i need to do?06:02

silverbladeHi guys, I'm a bit stuck. I've just installed Kubuntu onto some LVM volumes, ensuring that /boot is on a regular partition. It installed fine but when it boots it gets as far as identifying the HDDs and USB devices and then just pauses.13:55

eljefeI have some TrueType Fonts (TTF) that look fine with KFontView, but when I install them none of my KDE apps cn use them. They are just 'normal' fonts in all of my apps, when they're meant to be something crazy.  Why is this?14:49
eljefemy KDE apps can use them, but yhey're not special, i should say.14:49
emilsedghodd, there shouldnt be a problem eljefe, how you installed them?14:51
eljefei copied them to konqueror's fonts:/system/14:52

PendetaAfter installing KDE on a Ubuntu server, the server will no longer boot normally (it can however be booted in recovery mode). Trying to boot normally results in a blank screen with the cursor blinking in the upper left hand corner. Is there any way to fix this?14:52
eljefeyes same thing i thought; or i can right-click and select Install.  They always show up in a newly-started app's font list, but either as boxes or as a boring font, not as the fun font I spent time digging up.14:53
AzzcoCould it be the DM that is at fault Pendeta, can you switch to a virtual terminal when the screen is black? (ctrl+F1 or something)14:54
eljefePendeta: i've seen this in the past where it does boot, eventually, but there is no splash screen to let you know it is working.  Have you tried waiting a bit longer?14:54

eljefePendeta: yes that seems to be a hang, the boot time in my story was pretty normal, just seemed long without and monitor response.  Is it a kernel version?  or just X isn't starting?  once it's 'booted' can you [ctrl][alt][f2] to get to a login prompt, and [ctrl][alt][f7] to get back to your hung X ?15:02

DragnslcrThough I don't remember needing to do much configuration when I installed everything, other than vhosts for Apache and fixing some PHP settings15:52
Daisuke_Idoi think i'm one of the strange ones though, i don't care if it's gtk or qt as long as it gets the job done15:53
DragnslcrNo, that makes you one of the normal ones15:54
DragnslcrI don't think I've ever seen anyone so violently opposed to GTK15:54
vince__Dragnslcr: I would agree.. If I were trying to run a public server15:54
vince__i'm not.  Therefore I don't understand why someone dosen't just build a simple LAMP type install that would put in a basic LAMP that dosen't accept outside connections.  Such things exist for windows.  Perhaps i'll build a setup and make it avalible.  Thanks for your help though :-)15:58

emilsedghArtimus: so, the answer is a big NO20:30
Artimusemilsedgh: I know, and that's why the restricted manager is there (even if they legally could be enabled by default, they shouldn't be).  It's just kind of painful for people on dialup to download them every install.20:31
emilsedghArtimus: im on dialup and my modem needs restricted drivers and its a pain for me to make it work without a connection (i have to download it using others computers), but i dont want anything non-free on the disc20:32
Artimusemilsedgh: I don't see the problem with including them on the disk.  They wouldn't be installed as part of core.  Right now, the CDRom is added as an apt-get mirror.  This way, the restricted manager could fetch them from the CD.20:33
dthackerwhat's the command to restart networking from the command line?20:34
emilsedghArtimus: there are two problems.first is that they couldnt be supported by Ubuntu (and i dont care about this).but main problem (at least from my point of view) is that they are non-free.the official stuff from FOSS should NEVER contain ANYTHING non-free20:34
emilsedghArtimus: the hardware vendors are getting better and better.ATI opened up their specs and their 100% Free/Full Functional drivers are coming.NVIDIA will follow them i think (maybe not in near soon, but in a few years...)20:36
Artimusemilsedgh: I fail to see the difference between "Program automatically pops up saying install this evil driver for better support, download from Ubuntu Servers" and "Program automatically pops up saying install this evil driver for better support, please insert CD"20:36
emilsedghalso there is a project to create a fully functional driver for nvidia, but i dont know their status20:36
emilsedghArtimus: the differrence is that youre distrubuting a non-free thing...20:37
ArtimusThey're distributing it regardless.20:37
silverbladeok this is getting stupid now... i drag a window onto my other monitor and it disappears20:37
emilsedghalso, people with dialup are not in a high priority20:37
ArtimusWhat's the difference between putting it on a CD and putting it on your own servers?  Either way, you're offering it to them with the restricted manager20:38
andyt_any pointers on manual install of sun-java5-jdk?  essentially there's a bug in hardy (and gutsy) java installation that makes it unusable for development.20:38
emilsedghArtimus: well, i dindnt understand it too and it was confusing for me, but i dont know what happenned that i changed my mind ;)20:40
Markonhi all!20:40
emilsedghArtimus: but now if a distro gives something non-free, i want it go to hell :D20:40
Artimusemilsedgh: closed source drivers suck.  But they're not going away anytime soon.  It seems stupid to download them on every box when they're basically there anyway.  Restricted Manager already encourages the install.  That's already against your non-free policy.  Does it really hurt you to have an unused package on a CD?20:41
MarkonCan you tell me why when I try to ping my router it doesn't give me any signals?20:41
MarkonWhen I 'm on the live-cd and I try to ping the router it works, but when I ping it by kubuntu installed on the machine it doesn't work :/20:42
Markon(I've set the internet configuration by pppoeconf)20:43
emilsedghArtimus: i doubt if there is an unused package on the disc...btw its important for me that my distro is a FOSS enthusiast or no20:43
martijn81Markon: do you have to dail-in?20:43
martijn81otherwise, do a sudo  dhclient20:44

MarkonI've done dhclient, and it gave it to me.20:48

vince__Hey All,  Quick question.  I have 2 soundcards installed in my Kubuntu system.  When I first set everything up it worked fine with my Skype calls going to my headset and my system sounds going to the main speaker.  When I restarted however it seems to have messed it all up and now everything comes out from the headset.  I've tried looking at the Also Documentation on the WIKI and also checked allmighty google but I can't seem22:46
vince__to find a clear explination on how to make this stuff stick.  Anyone here that can help?22:46
benbreadvince__: I have exactly the same problem on one of my other machines, so far all i've worked out is you can run alsaconf just to set up the soundcard you want on each boot22:48
tinvince__: you should be able to direct the system sounds to any sound device in the sound system settings area22:48
tinand check the system services, there is a script that should run on boot to reset volume levels and such22:49
tinperhaps it's not running, or it is and doesn't know about multiple sound devices22:49
vince__tin: The only thing I can find is Sound Devices but all it tells me is ASLA, OSS , NO IN OUT etc22:49

vince__Pucko: Yes sir22:52
vince__benbread: No joy22:52

benbreadvince__: That's very weird - sudo apt-get install alsaconf ?22:53
pucko-vince__, then asoundconf set-default-card <whatever>22:53

vltHello. What package do I need to install to enable mounting an nfs share?22:57
tinso the headset is plugged to the mainboard's onboard plug, and the speakers or on the add-on card22:57
vince__tin Correct..22:58
tinvince__: yeah, you might try restarting artsd22:58
vince__Ok I know this sounds dumb, How do I do that from CLI22:58
vince__?22:58
pucko-vince__, perhaps you could try sudo invoke-rc.d alsa-utils restart22:59
